Dimarzio 36th Anniversary PAF vs Stock Gibson Burstbucker Pro PAF Humbucker Pickups, CLEAN pt 1 of 2

  • A carefully recorded back to back comparison of the Dimarzio 36th Anniversary pickups and the stock Gibson Burstbucker Pro pickups.
This video features a comparison of clean sounds. I play some open string 3 note chords to give an idea of the harmonic response, a bit of rythm and some basic pentatonics up the neck, to give an head of how they compare
I also recorded clips of the Dimarzio set with the guitar volume turned down to 5 on each pot. The Burstbuckers were recorded first and then the strings loosened, the Dimarzio's installed and the the strings tuned up. No changes were made to the amp and the guitar is direct into a clean channel of a 65 Vibrolux , 2x 10 type of amp. I measured each hum bucker while it was out of the guitar also.
Please look out for part 2 of this comparison where I add overdrive, will be up shortly.
After a few days of getting my settings together with the Dimarzio's i have to say I love them. They provide greater articulation in the mid to low strings and really sing out above the the 12th fret. They feedback really nicely and just seem to have a much wider dynamic response than the stock pups. The Dimarzios have really revitalised this LP for me and I haven't stop playing it since installing them.
The guitar is a 2007 chambered (probably) Les Paul standard plus top, with an ABR-1 Callahan billet steel bridge. It also features 33uf orange drops caps and standard modern LP wiring. The caps give a slight bump in the treble when the pots are turned down to 5-6.
Thanks for watching, please like, subscribe and comment, all encouragement is very welcome.
Recorded with a Rode K2 into a VC3 channel pre, into logic via an Irigpro usb interface and then synced up with the iPhone footage in FCPX.

Open covers will give the Burstbuckers more clarity, the only mod needed to my 2022 50's standard. 😉 I would like to try the 36th one day, but that would mean buying another guitar!!!

Yep a 2007 Std will be chambered, I have one. Appreciate the PU comparison. I found the bridge BBkr Pro a bit too ice picky, but after swapping it's magnet to an UnOriented A5.... it rounded off those high freqs just enough without effecting the bite.

Interesting comments below... for what i heard is the Dimarzio`s are definitely more balanced across the frequency spectrum. They don`t have the overwhelming bass response of the Gibbys and the Dimarzio treble response is smoother and more balanced to my ears. Overall the Dimarzio`s appear to have a warmer response and still retain good definition. After hearing this comparison, I would certainly take the Dimarzio`s over the Gibby BBs

I agree, burstbuckers are too bassy for a les paul, in my experience. Dimarzios have a certain kind of clarity that makes them special.

I also like the DiMarzios more. But it‘s possible to fine tune the volume of each string and balance them out by raising the pole screws. One could lower the whole BB pickup till the bass strings sounds ok, then raise the other screws til volume match or balance to taste.
I do this fine tuning on every humbucker. It results in a two times tree steps pattern: lowest= E and G, higher= A and B, highest= D and e.

@@lone-wolf-1 looking back here, yeah you gotta adjust those polepieces and pickup heights! Critical. But I ended up with a Dimarzio 36 Ann. in the neck and a Burstbucker Pro in the bridge of my Epi LP Standard so I guess I like them both after all!

A few small tweaks on an EQ and they would be identical. The DiMarzios seem to have more volume in the 250-500Hz range. The Gibson's are hotter in the 1-2KHz range.

DiMarzios are great, with their strong attack probably more suitable for modern sounds. The Gibson have an incomparable sweetness, it reminds me of "Since I've been loving you". Hard choise, it depends on your target sound. I'd go for the Gibsons, but I love the DM as well. As a matter of fact I have a three DM pups setup on my other guitar 😁

great demo. They're different, but I don't hear enough of a difference to justify changing the pickups. I'd be curious to know how much of the difference is due to the cover on the burstbuckers

Thanks Ciro, I had tried the neck Burstbucker without a cover once, it was maybe a bit brighter, or maybe just louder without a cover. Didn't really change the tone very much but did lower the vol at which the guitar will feedback. I have kept the DiMarzios in for now as I am still very happy with them.

@@counttwangular1429 They sound vintage, like they've been around a while. I like that cuz it makes nailing those old rock tunes so easy! However I would not use one in the bridge on a Les Paul cuz that is were a Dimarzio DP100 Super Distortion belongs, it is the sound of 70's-80's rock hits!

i hv a 08 standard faded chamberd, and yes urs is also. Always thought bbpro were a little harsh at times. Trying to save money, i swapped magnets to a2. Something went wrong in bridge pup and snded like a dead coil. So i opted for this pup and also swapped the cap. This is a really all around great pup. mated well with neck so i left it in. I got the dp103 wich is low output and can be used in eiyher poistion, I hv duncans in another les paul. a2pros and i think these are as good and cheaper too lol!! Will look for pt2

Thanks Carrie, I find the neck pup in 36th anniversary seems quite a lot cleaner than the BB and works really well, it really makes the blended mid position sounds more useful also. Yes, It's easy to wreck a hum bucker by swapping the magnets - i speak from experience. In defence of the BBs i would say they always sounded better when the amp was at higher vols and pushing some of that harshness into compressed sizzle. I have stuck with a 33uf orange drop cap with the 36th anniversary set, it still works well to allow some treble clean up at mid volume settings. The feedback on these pickups is great too! Cheers Count.

THANK YOU!!! I have Burst Pros for years now, and was going crazy over something similar for a PRS im not happy with. both sets sound great, with a slight difference in a few tonal responses. I may even prefer the Dimarzios, but we will see... On the off chance tou read this, and care to respond... I tend to like more even pickups than most. I (usually) don't like 'sets', but loading the guitar with identical pickups, however I did enjoy this set, as I do my BB Pros... I see that bridge on the 36th is a bit hotter. I almost preferred it's sound at '5'... Do you think I shoud go with TWO Dpo103(neck) or do the set...?? My last decision...!!

    • @counttwangular1429
      @counttwangular1429  Рік тому +1

Thanks for your comment, have been very happy with the balance and range of the 36th set, the neck cleans really nicely for blues/ clean and the bridge is bright enough to be dialled down for clean whilst having loads of output room for more overdriven sounds. There's a certain 70's 'quack' to them at full volume reminiscent of classic LP/Marshall tones but it eases off nicely as you turn down for cleaner sounds. My LP is chambered and has a slightly lighter tone than an un-chambered LP so these clips may compare well with how the 36th's might sound in a PRS. Hope that helps. Count.
