Hey Brother, Thank You so very much. This was the answer to a solution I have been working on with my 2 M1 iPad Air devices. The difference was they are USB C but, your solution was completely applicable, and let me share that your effort was both PERFECT and RARE, as there has been no other approach, suggestion or demonstration where the solution was a direct connection, and to understand the iPad output channels. Thanks Again, and I have subscribed 🖖
Great content my friend... I want to get into iPad instruments but i feel that is not so responsive (tryed many many synths and samplers). It seems like even with fastest configuration on the software it always feel milliseconds late... do you feel this way too?? Do you think if I buy an audio interface my Ipad sound will get more responsive to my touch? Trying to finger drumming but the latency seems a little bit bigger than with MIDI-Desktop.
Thanks, I knew you could do this but it's nice to see a tutorial to have things explained. I have been loving the iOS environment, so much so that I want to upgrade to a iPad Pro. I would have purchased an iPad Pro if I had known that I would be using all of the amazing and inexpensive iOS music apps that are out there It really is amazing and inspiring...I subscribed to your Chanel
Thnak you very much ! I’m exactly like you (ipad, app, mac, abbleton). It shouldn’t be so complicated ; when liking music playing recquires to ben ingeneer :))
Great video! I have only one tiny issue: My ipad is listed in audio devices, but it's greyed out and the 'Enable' button as well. I have Monterey and ios 9.3.5. Hence, it does not work, at all.
Thank you for your video!! When I try and send midi to my iPad, the iPad isn't an option to send midi to. Any tips on how I can get Ableton to show iPad as a midi to option??
Fantastic video.Thanks. This helped me to decide to buy an iPad,as I have some great VSTs that I'd been hoping that I could control with apps such as Touchscaper, but had no idea if it was even possible.
Thank you. Would have been nice if Apple went further and implemented an actual USB class compliant audio/MIDI interface for this to be compatible with other operating systems and devices with host ports like the NI Maschine+ or the Roland Fantom. Or is it actually that already ?
I've been doing this in Reason since I bought my iPad mini 4 a couple years ago. The additional information by way of midi channels and connecting the midi controller to Mac to play the iPad is something I need to try.
Great video and information!! Is it possible to sample FROM macbook to ipad? Essentially doing the opposite? I'd like to sample omnisphere onto audiolayer in my ipad. Is this possible? If so I'd love to see a video of that!
Not with IDAM. Afaik, you could either bounce the audio on the mac and transfer the audio file to the iPad, or, if you need live audio, you need some audio interface like iConnect Audio 4 plus or 4c which lets you connect both Mac and iPad and transfer the audio digitally.
Can you record to midi on these ios synths? I don't want to have to record to audio when I'm performing from a iPad with no on the go midi keyboard controller.
Which OSX version do you show here? I have Mojave 10.14.6, Audio MIDI Setup looks different, and Ipad Pro doesn't show there after connecting through USB.
It is available since 10.11. Here is an older video with an older macOS. Not sure if MIDI is supported on your macOS. MIDI came later to IDAM ua-cam.com/video/MoG7Ni3uvaU/v-deo.html
hey, thx! bit i do not get my masterkeyboard to play the ipad ... my set up is different, Studiologic88 > Midi 5pin > Emagic MT3 > USB>MAC/ Logic ... any thoughts? :-)))
Incredible. thank you, it's great, you opened my eyes to this. small question tho - if want to control an app that doesn't have the idam midi in option (for example Roli NOISE app), do you have a suggestion to manage to do play it anyway?
it should have because it's just a MIDI device or is it not possible to choose the MIDI controller.? If not, load it in an AUv3 host like AUM or so and route it from there :)
Thank you for this Information 🙂 I will try for myself idk may be this week or next. Very curious if it works the same with my configuration (trashcan macpro, StudioOne)
Is it possible to use IOS Garageband as a MIDI controller for Ableton? I want to use string instruments and arps (MIDI information) from Garageband on Ableton's plugins
I was just about to buy the ‘camera connection kit’ adapter so that I could at least use an external midi controller to control some iPad synths then I was going to send the audio to a channel in my hardware mixer but this option is way better since I’d not only be able to use an external keyboard but I’d also be able to send midi from my DAW and receive audio directly into the DAW kind of like Elektron overbridge or the Virus TI…not only is this easier and cheaper but it’s also much better. I’m wondering if all iOS synths and music apps support this and I’m also wondering if this could be done with the iPhone…I’m going to experiment with this as soon as I get a chance, thanks for the info!
Are u aware of the Ipad/iOS app called AUM? It’s kinda like an iPad central patch bay/mixer where you connect all your apps, fx apps, audio and midi ins and outs and I haven’t really seen any audio apps that can’t connect in one way or another to it….and using this with an IDAM connection to your Mac, and in my case Ableton, I’m pretty much able to run so many cool workflows and integrations…ie; I can use my Audio in Ableton, run it though a bunch of fx processors connected in AUM and then back out into Ableton, so it can be like any piece of outboard gear. I can use some crazy midi generators like Piano Roll to send the midi directly into Ableton. I use koala sampler on my iPhone and iPad all the time, and even though I can export in some ways from the app to Ableton, and I set koala up in AUM to use 8 midi channels which all run into their own audio tracks in Ableton. Or I can sequence the samples in koala using Abletons piano roll from one or more midi tracks instead of using the internal sequencer in koala and then send the sequenced audio back into the mac into their own audio tracks as in the last example. **also note u can use as many controllers as u want and using abletons prefs and the track inputs to switch which one is controlling which app on either ur mac OR iPad which is awesome that u don’t need to unplug them from the mac to control the iPad.
Another option is the iconnect audio 4, its an audio/midi interface that allows you to connect both the ipad as well as a mac/pc.. it offers full flexible audio and midi routing between the two and other connected hardware... this is a great option for PC users that want to integrate their ipad in their setup
I had the iConnect 2, and it never worked properly. The MIDI and audio would kick in and out, unpredictably, and it was also a pain to setup and configure. I got not working, but it never connected consistently. Finally threw the iConnect 2 away, as it seemed to be a piece of junk that I spent $99 on. Finally was able to connect my iPad Pro direct via USB. Works in Logic Pro X now without any expensive add-on hardware.
John Taylor i don’t recognise anything of this with the matured audio 4...really enjoying this... i have 3 keyboards, 4 modules, an ipad pro and my mac in the setup... works flawlessly

The problem is that it relies on a macOS only technology IDAM (Inter Device Audio MIDI). iConnectivity has created in the past audio interfaces that can do this also on windows. For example, ConnectAudio4+ or iConnectMidi2+ offers similar technology where you can send audio from the iPad over USB to your Windows Computer. But it's not so smart and easy as on a macOS computer

Thank you so much for your help, I got this all set up at home. It's great because I can travel and connect ideas right into Ableton.
Is worth to mention that for this example (In Ableton), you have to activate MIDI IN/OUT in Ableton preferences to receive/send MIDI notes to iPad.
oh yes, absolutely :) thanks for the tip MrSergit :)
