Modern tanks have evolved a lot, back in the day the protection of the tank was dictated by the thickness of the steel, slopes and even how the steel was processed, but today things are different. With composite armors, Explosive Reactive Armors, active protection systems, etc. It is not as easy to determine the protection of a tank, but today we are going to look at what is possibly the most protected tank in the world. The tank in question is not what you would think, it is not Abrams, or T-90, or Leopard 2, but in fact Ukrainian BM Oplot tank. With it's Duplet ERA and Zaslon APS it simply has the best protection.

This technology 70-80X, active protection Barrier (complex Rain USSR). It was abandoned in favor of the Standard complex (ancestor of Afganit), as a consequence of the complexity and General inefficiency of the Rain complex. @ScarletDespair The collapse of the USSR affected Ukraine to far greater extent than those countries. I mean the Maidan wasn't the first revolution Modern Ukraine went through.
Though Zelensky may be able to make a significant difference, hopefully.
Sadly, no. New regime is famously inept and corrupt. Government is promoting neo nacism. Power balance is shattered and private militias hold too much power even compared to Ukrainian military. It is destined to be a backwater for decades to come, because it cannot forget and forgive recent events.
too corrupt, the regime holds onto power through warmongering. I wouldnt believe any adverts on Ukrainian equipment, because even if it worked, without relying on soviet era technologies, they went nowhere. Equipment might not arrive in functional state/replaced with used. Too many rich ex-commies and too many very poor who fled the country or listen to nazi religion that makes them look away from corruption. Murrica made 2 coups in 10 years (2004/14) they only replaced one bunch of thieves with another, nazi and 'pro-western'. Because their identity is based on hatred of Russians. They however hate everybody, the nazis. To curb corruption there would probably require something like a military dictatorship. The nazis are corrupt and would like absolute power too. Oligarchs own the media, so youd need someone to concentrate power away from the magnates back to the king, or central govt/parliament whatever there would be. Parliament implies bribery, so it isnt immune to corruption. Without a strong hand like say Putin in Russia, Ukraine cant get up because the oligarchs serve only their own interest. There is an exodus going on in Ukraine. And US started in all, Vicki Nudelman/Nuland, rotten John Mccain et al.

@marios gianopoulos that'll need busloads of energy to produce an EMP that can propel the projectile nearly similar to the speed of light.
@@zed9095 No, you do not need an emp. You need a "barrel" consisting in a set of two rails being made of supra conductors and a potent battery able to discharge a huge amount of energy in a very short time in order to accelerate the projectile up to between 5000 and 7000 meters per second. The biggest roadblock with this technology lies in the battery. Currently the power unit firing those guns are too big to be installed into a 60/70 tons class tank... it would only fit in a tank of the 130-180 tons class... so its a weapon that we will not see being fitted to tanks until a huge leap in batteries miniaturization has been done. However these guns are already being used on some military vessels... that being said, next generation of tank guns being 130 and 140 mm will render even current active protection system obsolete... since the projectile without the sabot will weight between 12 and 15 kg, be more than one meter long, segmented and break the 2000 m/s barrier with a RHAe perforation being estimated between 1200 and 1500mm.... Nothing will stop it and armor will become redundant once and for all. Tanks of the 5th generation would be unmanned drones with just a big gun. Upcoming 4th generation of tanks will be the last one to be manned by humans and this generation will not last more than 2 decades before we see the frist drone tank. Probably powered by electric engine sporting 140 or 150 mm gun on a light chassis probably weighting less than 30 tons.

п.с. Oh, Yes, I have not yet talked about the simply terrible quality of "repaired" armored vehicles from Ukraine.
1. Nozh/Knife was never based on a soviet tech and it has no issues with mass detonation + Nozh blocks have 2 times less explosives than Reliks for instance. 2. Afganit was never field tested, so no one is sure about its effectiveness. 3. Turkey never reported any issues with their APS. 4. Nozh ERA is a reliable protection, field tested, patented and licenced for mass production within the NATO block countries unlike many Russian systems.
@@sdrkrm "Knife" - a modular complex of dynamic protection of the third generation for tanks of Ukrainian production, developed in 1997-1998, this approach dates back to the experiments of 1964-72 years in the research Institute of Steel of the USSR, when it was considered as promising, but was later replaced by the now traditional scheme with throwing flat armor plate. A workable complex that implements this principle was adopted only decades later, thanks to the use of the latest technologies in the manufacture of explosives and calculations in the field of optimizing the geometry of the charge profile and their mutual location, which provides for the formation of flat cumulative jets with optimal parameters for countering anti-tank weapons.
It was adopted by the armed forces of Ukraine in 2003; production is organized at several Kiev enterprises and at the 107th plant DZRHI (Donetsk), after the armed coup in Kiev in 2014 uses only imported (US) materials.
Received a mixed assessment among experts, for example: the high losses of T-64M "Bulat" tanks of the Ukrainian armed forces during the fighting in the South-East of Ukraine is associated with the low efficiency and disadvantages (chain detonation) of the dynamic protection "Knife"against outdated ATGM.
Doubts about the effectiveness of the dynamic principle on which the protection "knife" is built have been repeatedly expressed by experts at various levels. As the main drawback point to the low efficiency, excess weight, irrational use of explosion energy and low efficiency of impact on the armor-piercing core, which even when divided into parts retains a high penetration capacity.
It is also noted that the dynamic protection "Knife" has some advantages over the Soviet system "Contact-5" only due to a much larger amount of explosive (from 1.5 to 2.5 kg compared to 0.5 kg in "Contact-5"). In this case, increasing the power of the explosive charge has an undesirable side effect in the form of significant dynamic loads on neighboring protection modules and nodes of the carrier tank, which requires a General increase in the strength and weight of the entire tank structure as a whole.
This criticism is subject to reasoned doubts. Since, as stated, the specialists of the research Institute "Steel", as representing a direct competitor interested parties, distorted information about the DZ"Knife". On the one hand, in their articles they several times overestimated the mass of the explosive used in the DZ "Knife". On the other hand, using mathematical models that are not related to the principle of operation of the dz "Knife".
@@sdrkrm KAZ "Drozd-2" or "Standard", was used on the prototype Ob.195. "Drozd" also serially (hundreds of sets) was installed on the T-55AD in the 80s as part of the program of modernization of tanks.
Once again - NII Stali never developed or prototyped Nozh or its principles. If yes please provide the prototype's name. Because if you're reffering to Gofr ERA it has nothing similar with Nozh. And stop quoting idiots - 1 Nozh ERA module has only 300 grams max of explosive materials. "In one module in the TNT equivalent of 200 g for hschkv-19 and 300 g for hschkv-34. If we compare it with “Contact-5”, in which the 4C22 module contains 330 g, and there are two modules in the DZ container, then the Knife DZ with one module in the container contains 3.3 or 2.2 times less explosives. For DZ "Relict" 2 × 240 = 480 g for 4C23 modules or 2 × 140 = 280 g for 4C24, i.e. the mass of the “Knife” explosive is 1.6-2.4 times less (4C23) or comparable (4C24)." btvt.info/3attackdefensemobility/bulat_dz.htm

correction tungsten and DU are much denser and harder materials however because they are so hard they are very brittle and any force applied to the projectile can cause it to snap which is how heavy ERA works by effectively snapping the rod and decreasing the penetration.
I doubt that the projectile being snapped affects its penetration significatively. Afterall, its kinetic energy stays fairly constant after the fracture, plus, the losses due to the projectile "impacting itself" after the initial impact might be mostly unimportant, since the projectile already degrades pretty easily once it impacts the armor, hence there's not enough time for this losses to be happen (plus these fractures are VERY small, leaking very little energy).
When it comes to kinetic penetrators, the only feasible way that ERA can affect its penetration noticeably is by redirecting them to travel as paralel to the armor as possible, so that the speed on the axis normal to the armor is as small as possible, and so the material gets a chance for its own (normal) force to fully redirect it away from itself. Alternatively, bending the projectile is viable too, since it also disrupts its trajectory towards a convenient path.
Longstory short, it's probably more about how the explosion's force deflects and deforms the projectile rather than the fractures said explosion may cause.
@@Pao234_ well the rod snapping or deforming absolutely effects penetration if it actually snaps you have less rod to penetrate regardless of its velocity which means less penetration. APFSDS rod length is important for overall pentation which is why modern APFSDS rods are rather long to get the most penetration. Deforming(which is more likely) changes the impact angle and can cause the projectile to yaw which puts more stress on the projectile and causes it to either travel through more material and degrade faster or not hit straight and true.
@@nemisous83 No, if the rod snaps that *only* means that the rod split in two or more parts, however there's no loss of mass in the fracture itself. It's only a discontinuity in the material of the initial object. As i said previously, ERA is most effective against APFSDS when the angle is "lenient" enough so that the explosion can deviate the projectile and reduce its velocity towards the armor. If this sounds a little confusing, imagine a wall, now move your pov to be directly above the wall and looking down to it. Now imagine a projectile going horizontally to the plane and diagonal to said wall. If the wall had blocks of ERA protecting it, the explosion would make the projectile go more paralel and less perpendicular to the wall, this means that it would reduce its velocity towards the wall, so the projectile transfers less energy in the impact
@@nemisous83 And also, velocity is the most important, since the kinetic energy of an object increases proportional to the square of its speed. Basically, a 1kg projectile going 1m/s has 25 times less energy than the same projectile going 5m/s. When it comes to APFSDS all that matters is kinetic energy and its conservation, and of course reducing (air) drag by making it loooong and thin is a pretty good idea. Also of course, a long penetration is much better than a thick penetration of the same volume, thats important too
@@Pao234_ velocity is one factor but its not the only factor in APFSDS penetration. if that was the case DM63 would have more penetration than M829A4 because its traveling 150m/s faster however the overall length of the rod is almost 300mm shorter. if you plug both rounds into any APFSDS calculator the M829A4 always has more penetration. this is also why M900 has more penetration than Bm-36(115mm) despite having a slower muzzle velocity.

I guess friendly infantry units should probably stay far away from these tank. Once the tank is taking hits, all those ERA going off are gonna literally shredding anybody standing near it.
Unless it's being shot at with apfsds which is actually the rarest threat for a tank to encounter on the modern battlefield the shrapnel from the shaped charge would already be deadly regardless of era however it would certainly not help
Sorry for little knowledge of mine. How would ERA be affected by shooting it simply with automatic weapon? I.E ak 47? Just wondering if ERA would have been exploited?
If I remember correctly it is designed so it's not activated by anything under 30mm or so. I could be wrong though. Shooting it with an AK47 would do nothing. Multiple hits of a 125mm cannon or atgm would do the trick of setting them off.
Nope a BALLISITC or BULLET would not activate Modern ERA even 50 caliber and the largest automatic caliber which is 30mm used in A-10 WARTHOG and APC would do nothing even the armor piercing, Shooting with AK-47 HAHAHAHA that would do nothing any round of AK or Any small arm fires or rifle and sniper would do nothing. To ERA to activate is to HAVE an Large and explosion and penetrator which is RPGs and other projectile , missile. such as RPG-7 which is an old RPGs and not really effective againts modern TANK.

@@komradematt8025 Ok , so my last comment failed to update. Let me explain this to you as if I were talking to a child .
Not everything on google is true. In the case of Russian weapons systems,.. guess what ? What is publicly available is what the Russian military makes publicly available. You don't think they publish the exact and real performance of their latest AA missiles, do you ? I hope you are not THAT gullible. Good. So why do you imagine that they publish the true performance of their latest tank ?! They don't.
Look, we've been here before, it's not new. You don't remember the eighties, I assume,.. when every new Russian weapon system was so superior to what we had. Tanks ? T80 ! we never had a hope against it. What a load of Bollocks that turned out to be . It was ALL junk.
The Russian Lie. OK ?! It's what they do. It's called propaganda.
Man , it worries me that there are people like you. You honestly think that because it's on Google, it HAS to be true. It's so retarded. YOU know nothing about the T14 . Neither do I . And, until one is examined by a reputable source, I.E. NOT the Russian military , neither will anyone else. In the mean time there is no reason to think it is in any way surerior to any western design MBT. At the end of the day, all it represents is an ergonomic redistribution of the crew. It might be better, it might not , we don't know yet, but it's hardly a quantum leap in tank design.

Very interesting, does relikt work in the same way with shaped charges? Musics a bit loud as the vid ends.
No. It is basically Contact 5 but it throws two metal plates onto the incoming shell instead of one. Sounds old and not impressive at all but it works reaally well against basically every type of tank ammo (HE and HESH are not included) especially if we will consider its cost too.
Well this didn't age well

@@mrdato116 no, there is virtually no information of the oplot-m in 2022 aside from the previous variants in Thailand. But Ukrainian t72s and T64 havent been doing so well. The base Abrams, even without ERA, is already equal to this tank in armor.

Bold claim to say it’s the best protected tank when nations like the UK keeps their armour secret. The ease at which the Russians rolled into Ukrainian territory might throw some doubt on the effectiveness of Ukrainian equipment.
Ukraine didnt have any oplots.

"The ease at which the Russians rolled into Ukrainian territory(...)" is a sentence you definitely can't apply to 2022.
Why is ERA not standard on modern tanks particulary Western tanks? It seems a phenomemal addition to any tanks protection.
Because it's a "protects you only once" kind of protection. And also because any canon on any IFV nowadays can just spray the tank and detonate the ERA leaving the tank with many weakspots. It also adds tons of weight and increases maintenance because these would need to be replaced. You better bet on a strong base armor and both good soft and hard kill defensive systems.
