In "Chemin de Fer" calling "banco" means you wager up to the same amount as the "banker - banco" player. Only one player can call "banco" at a round, if someone calls "banco" no other player can wager and only the caller and the current banker plays out the 2 hands. So basically by calling "banco" he went head to head with the lady, while other players could only watch, yet he is still the "punto" player hand in that round of the game, so he gets dealt the first 2 cards.
Bond calls "banco", meaning he is betting on the bank (i.e. on Xenia) to win. His call of "banco" cannot mean he wishes to play as the bank, because Xenia deals him the first card indicating he is "player" and she is "bank". Xenia (bank) has 8, bond (player) has 7, so Xenia's hand wins. Therefore Bond should win the first pot... but doesn't. Why not?
probally a American traduction like bacara is called bacarat in america las vegas tables it,s more like punto y banca tables are shit two play in vegas also roulette haves one number more there the doble cero.
They are playing the chemin de fer variant of baccarat. When he says "banco" he is saying that he will stake the entire bank's (Xenia's) bet as an individual, it doesn't mean he bets on banker. He is playing his own hand, not the bank's and that is why his 7 looses to her 8.
Still the one and only time in my life I’ve seen playing cards without it’s number/letter and suit on the corner. It always throws me out when I see this scene after a long time.
what does Xenia always say? She says something like "Plee-Ajj" When she lost the card game, when she lost the fight in the sauna, and when she was trying to kill Bond in the forest.
Xenia got 5 and a king so that's 5. Bond had 2k and a 6 so that's 6. Other way to think, 15 vs 26. In baccarat they take the last number out if the two so 5 v 6. I think. I'm a noob baccarat player. Lol
I have NO IDEA how that card game is being played how Bond won. All I know is he won and this scene is as cool, stylish and just about as good as Bond films can get. Best since Connery's Bond and still yet to be matched.
Tens mean nothing because you drop the first digit. Baccarat is basically just fancy Hi-Lo. So a 5 is a 5, a 10 is a 0, and 16 is a 6. She had 10-5 for 5 total and kept it which was risky. Bond took the optional 3rd card and it gave him 6 beating her 5 because he had two tens worth nothing. She was hoping he had a 4,5,6,7 or 8 because adding 6 to those cards would give Bond a total less than 5. A total of 8 or 9 automatically wins in regular baccarat btw, but this is a super rare high end version called Chemin de Fer where you can hit or stand on anything.
The woman in the gold and black evening dress looking over Onatopp's shoulder won a contest in the last film to appear in this one. nice directing shot
For any wondering, she used poor strategy on the 2nd hand. If the banker has a 5, and the player draws a 6, you should then draw also, but she chose to stand instead. Just think of the outcomes. The player will only draw on 0-5, so if they draw a 6, you as the banker lose 4 out of 6 outcomes if you stay on 5. You lose if they have a 0, 1, 2, or 3. You only win if they have a 4 or 5. And of course, Bond had a 0, so she lost. That was the only real decision made in these two hands. First one was the equivalent to blackjack, round ended instantly. Then Bond drew on 0, which was an obvious play, since 0 is the worst total possible. So the only real decision was a poor one (assuming you want to play optimally).
And according to several source I have encountered, the word "buliatch" is Russian for "bastard"; this would make sense as when Xenia says it, she almost seems to be using it as a disgusted curse, and almost certainly in reference to 007 in regards to losing to him at cards. This is further reinforced by when she repeats it during the sauna scene, only then she's more angered than disgusted, as here.
This is chemin de fer ... You have the option to take cards or stand... unlike punto banco baccarat which has tabled rules... She was hoping bond's hand would reduce, and her five would win
This movie, let alone every other movie where Bond plays Chemin De Fer makes me wish this form of baccarat was offered in casinos all across the U.S. of A.
Ah so this version is really gambling. I was confused as well since i thought she must draw on a 5. Is there commission on both banker and player in chemin de fer?
She doesn't *have* to draw on a five if the open card is a six. It would be the correct play, odds-wise, certainly, but in chemin de fer the bank can do whatever they like, even if it is obviously the wrong call like here.
I don’t know but I’d hate to play with them. Plain blank on one side and on the other it has no goddamn symbols in the corners indicating the number/letter and suit for when you’re holding them in your hands. They sound like a nightmare to play with!
famke janssen is amazingly beautiful in this film
GoldenEye was such a great movie. Fabulously structured.

Thank you. I was wondering why he said banco but was the player. What does "dupe" mean? Xenia says it the beginning of the next round.
@@ziatonic she says "double", and Bond replies "suivez" (follow)
I learned to play Baccarat solely because of this movie.
Famke Janssen, dutch pride, so freakin hot in this movie
This scene rules.
Agreed, I have watched it ten times now. So perfect!

Common practice in Monte Carlo and high end European casinos.
Pierce Brosnan sure had an excellent way of delivering those quibs.
I am the croupier in real life and in this movie!
It must have been a great experience. Long shooting hours, probably. =)
Somebody please tell me where to buy those playing cards
The store.

i'm almost positive she is actually saying "buliatch"
I think it's her accent, and she's saying Blyat. Which is sorta the Russian equivalent to FUCK or SHIT.
Jean Grey playing cards and smoking?!?! HAHA JK!
Goldeneye is my favorite James Bond movie, and Famke Janssen is one of my favorite actress.

No, you totally got it right.

@@ziatonic I kind of cant believe she didnt take a card. With his 6 showing, he probably hit with 0-4, meaning she had a 1/4 chance at her 5 winning

Yeah, I remember reading about that.
on the top? on the top.
James Bond have to make Xenia wait for 7 seconds before showing his cards is hilarious.

What does Sept ala banc mean?
7 to the bank
how does this version work? I thought since james got a 6 she has to draw on 5

What cards are those? I've seen those cards once but I never found out where.
