GOLDENEYE | Aston Martin DB5 versus Ferrari F355
Вставка
- Опубліковано 20 лип 2020
- It’s Aston Martin DB5 versus Ferrari F355 in the GOLDENEYE (1995) car chase between Bond (Pierce Brosnan) and Onatopp (Famke Janssen). It wasn’t the stunt drivers but Pierce Brosnan himself who caused the most damage to the DB5. He said: “We did about eight takes and they said, ‘What’s that smell?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know?’ I had been driving up the mountain with the handbrake on.”

This was a great chase! Goldeneye is one of the BEST Bond films! It had everything, the women, the action, the exotic locations, the gadgets and cars. Plus, Brosnan had the looks and charm for the role. Lots of theater audience, cheering moments in this one! A perfect Bond film!
Shame about the music used here though, possibly the worst piece of music in any Bond film.
It was a great launch of Brosnan's tenure as Bond. Goldeneye was thoroughly enjoyable.
@@atomsmash100, he was the best Bond in my opinion.
@@LicencetoWhohaha the music score is perfect. Perfectly early 90s, kind of experimental sounding.
More play than chase. Aston was on the edge a lot but Ferrari was not even trying. Well, lower weight, higher power, twice the tires contact area. Not to mention other Aston's shortcomings like live axle, but it's like 30 years difference between the cars.
A lot of people complain about the choice of music in this scene, but I believe it's perfect. This is supposed to be a lighthearted race, they're both sort of trying to toy with the other. The music helps highlight that aspect of the scene
It's exactly the same kind of music which is used in the French serie of movies Taxi.
I honestly dont understand the hate for the soundtrack as a whole. All of it really works for me, especially the songs used in action scenes. The song that plays during the initial raid at Arkangel in particular is great imo. Maybe not as instantly iconic as the song from the Goldeneye game, but still, I quite like it, its tense and moody and fits the scene.
@@xxrocketshark216xx4 I completely agree, the Goldeneye Overture was perfect for the opening sequence. It had a very Soviet era feel, which is what the composer was going for since that scene took place in 86.

Martin Campbell is really good at introduce a character. Here especially on Onatopp, she was a beautiful, but dare, aggressive person, enjoy taking risk, very dangerous to be with. That helps how to develop the story later in this movie.
That sense also reminds me the Parkour sense in Casino Royale, the chase introduced Craig bond personality: Blunt, determined to chase, but high ego. Needless to mention, that develops lots of personality throughout the film.

As we are going on about Astons: Just when I had decided the finest, sexiest real GT of an Aston of recent times was the Vantage V12, I stumble across a glowing pearl-black DBS manual. Shocking drop dead gorgeous from tip to tail. Thank you Ian C and all the artisans involved in such sculpture. While slightly less shock value than a One77, it is utterly irresistible.
Bond`s DB5 sure cornered flat. And of course Bond can compensate for any performance shortcomings while dicing with Onatopp`s light years more advanced Ferrari. Great stuff.

As much as I LOVE this scene there is no universe where a DB5 can keep up with any Ferrari. This scene is a plausible as the entire film of Moonraker. That being said, I would take the DB5 over a Ferrari any day!
Yes that's the popular opinion and Ferrari any day would beat db5 but this is a hill section and not straights and its bond driving the car!!
It was not exactly a start to finish race but one where the Ferrari easily catches up but db5 driven by bond won't let it overtake it and db5 has a bigger engine

👍👍👍
I had the same experience
Are you telling me you prefer the sound of an F355 over for example a F40?
A DB5 could never keep up with a Ferrari, no. However, in this scene it isn't just a simple race between those two cars. Firstly, it's implied that Bond's DB5 is heavily modified and suped-up by Q (or just his own mechanic as he has in the books maybe). On top of that, they're on a dangerous, tight-bend mountain road, so whatever car you have is heavily limited in how fast you can drive it anyway. Then Onatopp of that, Bond and Xenia are toying with each other and flirting, not just racing.
I can't defend the score for this scene though 😂 I actually love most of Goldeneye's soundtrack and think it gets far too much sneering. It was really original, interesting and a courageous choice. There are still some very classic, sweeping orchestral pieces but tracks like the overture at the very beginning, that fascinating and pretty unique dark industrial style reeally adds to the scenes. The car chase piece though...terrible.
Too many forget that a car is only as good as its driver. 🤷♂
Ahhhh, but nothing, absolutely nothing is as cool as that Aston! The original chick magnet!
The '64 DB5 had 325hp and did 60mph in 6.1 seconds. While not slow, imagine it with its two, 85Ib General Electric M134 miniguns added, it would never been able to keep pace with the 380hp 1995 Ferrari 355 which hit 60mph in 4.8 seconds.
@@Plata-ori-plumbu Of course, that’s assuming that Q Branch only added weaponry and didn’t do anything to the engine, suspension, brakes, etc.

Well, as a professional musician, I strongly disagree. It's precisely the music that makes an otherwise generic car chase scene feel special and memorable. Modern action film music all sounds the same. This one stands out.

When I saw Goldeneye in the theatre in 1995, there was a guy about two rows ahead of us that was obviously having a severe drug-abuse-induced problem. When this car chase began he started freaking out. After about a minute or two it got so bad they stopped the film & brought up the house lights so the security people could remove him. & of course he wouldn't go without a fight...
When the commotion was over & they started the film again the chase scene was pretty much lost on us...
Great chase, still think it was pretty goofy having an classic car being able to keep up with one of the best handling cars at that time
If it were a test of speed then the DB5 is outmatched, however the DB5 is quite sporty and these were roads with lots of turns. So you could justify it by saying that Xenia can't really outrun him because the Ferraris speed just isn't that relevant. Furthermore it wasn't just a race it was a sort of interaction, so you could also justify it by saying that Xenia wasn't TRYING to outrun him, or that Xenia was distracted and couldn't utilize the full power of the Ferrari. But it IS James Bond, Goofy is in the name. And you're entitled to your opinion.
The tight roads and all the traffic helped that Aston, they did it right.

In the context of the film, it works well. It has notes to it which have complementation later in the film, and melds together what I would call eastern orthodox exoticism.
