  • It’s Aston Martin DB5 versus Ferrari F355 in the GOLDENEYE (1995) car chase between Bond (Pierce Brosnan) and Onatopp (Famke Janssen). It wasn’t the stunt drivers but Pierce Brosnan himself who caused the most damage to the DB5. He said: “We did about eight takes and they said, ‘What’s that smell?’ And I said, ‘I don’t know?’ I had been driving up the mountain with the handbrake on.”

I honestly dont understand the hate for the soundtrack as a whole. All of it really works for me, especially the songs used in action scenes. The song that plays during the initial raid at Arkangel in particular is great imo. Maybe not as instantly iconic as the song from the Goldeneye game, but still, I quite like it, its tense and moody and fits the scene.

That sense also reminds me the Parkour sense in Casino Royale, the chase introduced Craig bond personality: Blunt, determined to chase, but high ego. Needless to mention, that develops lots of personality throughout the film.

Shocking drop dead gorgeous from tip to tail. Thank you Ian C and all the artisans involved in such sculpture. While slightly less shock value than a One77, it is utterly irresistible.

A DB5 could never keep up with a Ferrari, no. However, in this scene it isn't just a simple race between those two cars. Firstly, it's implied that Bond's DB5 is heavily modified and suped-up by Q (or just his own mechanic as he has in the books maybe). On top of that, they're on a dangerous, tight-bend mountain road, so whatever car you have is heavily limited in how fast you can drive it anyway. Then Onatopp of that, Bond and Xenia are toying with each other and flirting, not just racing.
I can't defend the score for this scene though 😂 I actually love most of Goldeneye's soundtrack and think it gets far too much sneering. It was really original, interesting and a courageous choice. There are still some very classic, sweeping orchestral pieces but tracks like the overture at the very beginning, that fascinating and pretty unique dark industrial style reeally adds to the scenes. The car chase piece though...terrible.

When this car chase began he started freaking out. After about a minute or two it got so bad they stopped the film & brought up the house lights so the security people could remove him. & of course he wouldn't go without a fight...

If it were a test of speed then the DB5 is outmatched, however the DB5 is quite sporty and these were roads with lots of turns. So you could justify it by saying that Xenia can't really outrun him because the Ferraris speed just isn't that relevant. Furthermore it wasn't just a race it was a sort of interaction, so you could also justify it by saying that Xenia wasn't TRYING to outrun him, or that Xenia was distracted and couldn't utilize the full power of the Ferrari. But it IS James Bond, Goofy is in the name. And you're entitled to your opinion.

This particular track carries those themes with a sporty vibe that mirrors the action and its independence from the plot; it's insouciant. That's how I see it anyway - lest we forget, James Bond the character is first and foremost a boy with toys.

I think this is one of the best DB5 moments in the entire series. Don’t mind the music either, and Caroline needs more attention for a random one off character.

There is NO WAY the DB could’ve kept up with that Ferrari. The only realistic thing about this clip, are all the asshole bike riders taking up the road. And that tractor, was probably made by Lamborghini

Bear in mind that this is a DB5 that was heavily modified with weapons and gadgets, it doesn’t seem out of the question that Q installed speed boosters as well

    • @hoilst

Fun fact: they had to drive screws into the F355's tyres to get it to spin out like that. Wouldn't do it, otherwise.
I love that Lambo still makes tractors; there's a bloke in the US who takes his Lamborghini tractor to all the Lamborghini meets.
