This is my favorite verse in the Bible. When I was a new believer I was working at an aircraft factory. On my breaks and at lunch I would read my bible. At that time I had started reading from the beginning and when I got to this point verse I realized for the first time who Jesus really was. Not just a baby in a manger, the son of God, but He was God. I was so excited after reading this and seeing what it truly said that I ran back to the guy I was working with and I asked him, “Do you know who Jesus is.” He looked at me like I had lost my mind and said “He’s the son of God.” I exclaimed excitedly, “No, He is God.” He didn’t get it but I saw everything in the Word from then on in a completely different light. What an amazing revelation this is.

I am still looking at the mystery hidden in Genesis 1:3 when God said "Let there be light" in the face of void and darkness. Why darkness? Maybe this is after Lucifer rebelion and cast out. So is the light here is the appointment of Jesus as the light to bring satan's end because the light of the universe is only created on the fouth day?

That's cool. Everyone has a different story that sparked that understanding of amazing grace. I had a strong biblical upbringing and rejected it all. Suddenly one day in my kitchen I turned and faced Jesus who I knew had been standing behind me waiting patiently to give up my rejection. I'm 71 now and was 40 then but remember the moment we'll. Even if you take 1 Pet 3 :18 as a reference to Jesus being mase alive in the spirit, to be made alive must mean that he was dead beforehand. If you have not died(in the spirit ) you cannot be made alive. Your commentary reinforces my years-ago decision to commence NT memorization at John 1:1. Most important is WHO Jesus is, followed by WHY Jesus entered Earth, WHAT he accomplished while here and HOW we as individuals should respond. On outdoor walks or wherever the day leads, reciting John Chapter One (and beyond) incites worship, which leads to further memorization, praise and reflection. I love that the Apostle John was given a number of years before writing his account, which undoubtedly served to reinforce and confirm for him humanity’s greatest and most pivotal gift of LIFE through Jesus. Even his Patmos imprisonment has benefited all subsequent humanity, as it created space (time, opportunity) for John’s witness to be recorded. Praise God!
Our SS is studying the book of John this quarter. This is my favorite book in the Bible, probably because of the first chapter alone. John the beloved, really recognized Jesus as God in the flesh. Yes we do need to be very careful with words. Justin is correct. John 1.1 does not say Jesus came to life but, the Word was made flesh so this is not the beginning of Jesus Christ but rather the beginning of His few years here as a man but still being God. He is eternal, no beginning and without end. He came to pay our sin debt that all who put their faith in Him (Christ) would be forgiven (without cost). No one deserves salvation nor can we earn it lest any man should boast but is the free gift of God and salvation is found in no other name for Jesus said, "I am the way the truth and the life, no man cometh unto the father except by me." Praise the Lord He is the ONLY way. If you confess with your mouth Jesus Christ and beleive in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you WILL be saved. Time is running out.

Thanks for that lesson. I have been contemplating that Jesus wanted the fellowship of His friends in the Garden of Gethsemane, but they fell asleep. (phil 3:10 "the fellowship of His suffering") It may be that John had the best handle on who Jesus is, as he is described as reclining on Jesus at the Last Supper. I believe Jesus mourns the lack of appreciation of most of humanity for what he did and who he is. All of my praise and all of my life is not enough. All the glory of all heaven is not enough compared to what he is worthy of.

Even if you take 1 Pet 3 :18 as a reference to Jesus being mase alive in the spirit, to be made alive must mean that he was dead beforehand. If you have not died(in the spirit ) you cannot be made alive.
Of course, all of these issues disappear if you actually stick to the claim of the Evangelists who state , not that Jesus was God Almighty, but that he is the Christ, the Son of God(Mat 16 :16; Mark 8 :29; Luke 9:20; John 11 :27).The Son of God can die and be resurrected by God. Indeed, this is the theme of Peter's talk in Acts 2 : 22-24; 25-35; 36.)

Your commentary reinforces my years-ago decision to commence NT memorization at John 1:1. Most important is WHO Jesus is, followed by WHY Jesus entered Earth, WHAT he accomplished while here and HOW we as individuals should respond. On outdoor walks or wherever the day leads, reciting John Chapter One (and beyond) incites worship, which leads to further memorization, praise and reflection. I love that the Apostle John was given a number of years before writing his account, which undoubtedly served to reinforce and confirm for him humanity’s greatest and most pivotal gift of LIFE through Jesus. Even his Patmos imprisonment has benefited all subsequent humanity, as it created space (time, opportunity) for John’s witness to be recorded. Praise God!

Our SS is studying the book of John this quarter. This is my favorite book in the Bible, probably because of the first chapter alone. John the beloved, really recognized Jesus as God in the flesh. He was one of the three to see Jesus in great glory, transfigured on the Mount!

He is the eternal second Person of the three-Person Godhead, having eternal life in Himself - therefore, He already had life (eternal life). Perhaps you meant to say something like 'the Word took on human life'? Praise God for sure.
Yes we do need to be very careful with words. Justin is correct. John 1.1 does not say Jesus came to life but, the Word was made flesh so this is not the beginning of Jesus Christ but rather the beginning of His few years here as a man but still being God. He is eternal, no beginning and without end. He came to pay our sin debt that all who put their faith in Him (Christ) would be forgiven (without cost). No one deserves salvation nor can we earn it lest any man should boast but is the free gift of God and salvation is found in no other name for Jesus said, "I am the way the truth and the life, no man cometh unto the father except by me." Praise the Lord He is the ONLY way. If you confess with your mouth Jesus Christ and beleive in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you WILL be saved. Time is running out.
More than that: The Word IS Life! Apart from Him, there is NO Life! In Him - and through Him - ALL Life Exists!

Thanks for that lesson. I have been contemplating that Jesus wanted the fellowship of His friends in the Garden of Gethsemane, but they fell asleep. (phil 3:10 "the fellowship of His suffering") It may be that John had the best handle on who Jesus is, as he is described as reclining on Jesus at the Last Supper. I believe Jesus mourns the lack of appreciation of most of humanity for what he did and who he is. All of my praise and all of my life is not enough. All the glory of all heaven is not enough compared to what he is worthy of.

When I hold God's Word in my hand, I don't make a clear distinction between the Word in my hand and the Word in John 1.1 The Bible fully represents God just as Jesus in the flesh fully represents God.

It is not good that people today are so used to pastors calling the whole Bible "the Word of God" instead of "the written word of God", When Scripture verses talk about Paul preaching "the Word of God", they are referring to the Lord Jesus, not the whole of the Bible. People today do not understand this and thus do not focus on Jesus Christ. This is a very disappointing situation. May Almighty God open their eyes to see more of Christ!

Very good. My life as a Christian changed when I realized that God caused a new birth in me before I knew it and without my consent or willful choice. Therefore and then drawing me to Jesus and giving me the ability to believe the gospel and be converted on Oct. 10, 1975 in Hilo HI. The 2nd.birth came before the belief and not after. All the elect are eternally saved in the same manner John 3:8
