  • The scientific notation requires a single non-zero digit before the decimal point. When the decimal point is moved to the left, the exponent of 10 is positive or the number of places moved by the decimal point should be added to the original exponent. When the decimal point is moved to the right, the exponent of 10 is negative or the number of places moved by the decimal point should be deducted from the original exponent. Hence, one way to remember the sign convention for the exponent of 10 is to think of the decimal point and the exponent as having opposite directions.
