  • There are many great side characters in Arcane, but Mylo and Claggor I think get overlooked, yet they are a great example of how to write great side characters and give them importance. In this video, I attempt to give a closer look at who Mylo and Claggor were and the depth they were written with.

I was genuinely shocked when Mylo and Claggor died in episode 3, in part because they were so well written that I expected them to stick around for the entirety of the show. It was obvious from the start that Vi and Powder were going to get the most focus out of the kids, but even as secondary characters the boys were so developed if you pay attention.
Mylo picks on Powder because he's an insecure twerp. He is unable to contribute in any meaningful way during most of the heist, he is absolutely terrified during the fight with Deckard's gang, and so he covers his weakness with boasts and pointing out Powder's flaws.
Claggor is more quiet, and a lot of his characterization comes in these little nonverbal moments. You see him helping Powder get on the balcony in Piltover, handily taking on two guys at once during the fight, and then in the undercity he pulls Mylo into a one-armed hug to try and cheer him up after the heist went wrong (and Mylo shrugs him off for this). I also find it interesting that he generally stays out of the conflict between Mylo and Powder, but the one time he says something is at the shooting gallery when he asks if Mylo is scared that Powder's going to beat him again, which I viewed as Claggor calling Mylo out a bit, but to the extent that he can remain outside of this conflict and let them hash it out.
A great character moment is when Deckard pulls out a knife after their brawl, Mylo flinches and puts his arms up like he wants to defend himself or flee, meanwhile Claggor calmly turns to face Deckard head on, but doesn't move to restart the fight or leave. In a show with so much to talk about, Mylo and Claggor tend to be forgotten, which is a shame because I think they are great examples of doing a lot with characters in little time which subtle moments.

I appreciate claggors humility, when they get jumped and ekko asks "did vi kick their asses?" Claggor says yes, and makes it sounds like they would've been finished if not for her, but if you watch the fight, claggor carried quite a bit, both trying to stop the fight, and fighting two of the goons at once when it started. But was still willing to give vi the credit

Mylo wasn't useless. He was the only one who could pick locks. Vander could see this and had faith in him. When Mylo is stressed rescuing Vander, Vander reassures him and believes in him.
Vi kicking the door in that Mylo is trying to open just shows how poor a leader and impatient she is. She doesn't give him a chance, he's barely started and she boots the door. She doesn't appreciate that for a team to function, everyone has to feel like they're contributing.
Mylo holds his own in the fight with the other street kids. Sure, he isn't as skilled as Vi, or a powerhouse like Clagger, but he gets in a few good licks and keeps at least one of them occupied.
Sure, he's not perfect, but this analysis was unduly harsh.

It makes me sad how much people hate on Mylo. Most of my friends hate on him simply because he was rude to Powder and refuse to look further into his character. I'm not saying that being rude to Powder was a good idea on his part and it was quite unhealthy for both of them. In the end, Mylo was extremely insecure and picked on the easiest target he could find. I don't think he had malicious intent and we never see Mylo get physical with Powder. Yes he yells but he never hits her. Now you could argue that he never hit her because he knew Vi would beat his ass but I don't think he would be the kind of person to physically abuse someone. I quite enjoyed scenes with Mylo, not because he was being an asshole but because he was written to be funny in an unintentional way. For example, the scene when Vi kicks him down the garbage chute he says "Not again. I just got this shirt!" That scene was quite humorous to me as well as when Vi kicks open the balcony door and he says "animals..." Mylo had quite an important role to play and I wonder a lot what he would have been like as an adult.

I always got the feeling that from Powder´s POV Claggor was mostly impassive. While there was Vi who verbally defended her, Claggor - aside from that one comment to Mylo - never really came to her defense and rather watched from the sidelines. And I always got the feeling that Jinx´s ghost of him read as a kind of silent judgement. It´s nice to see, though, that the little grin on his plushie and the rather non threatening look in her mind probably isn´t only that. (Maybe for him she feels just more guilt because he was actually kind to her.)
Anyway, I´m glad I found my way here, it´s a good vid :)

I think, in time, Mylo could have been a creative asset to the team. He was beginning to acquire specialized skills, perhaps out of fear of being useless. He had tools for his missions, not just the lock pocking kit but his ear horn for listening through doors. Vander was the only one who encouraged these talents when he was being freed by Mylo, and could’ve been the one to set Mylo straight with his talks of integrity (not showing up from a job empty-handed) and mindfulness (take a breath and try again). I think he could have designed covert missions and even been a spy, had he not been held back by his feelings of inadequacy.

Thank you so much for giving these boys the analysis they deserve! Such a short amount of screen time & yet such a strong impact on our main characters - specifically Powder/Jinx. I’m definitely on board with the possibility of Claggor becoming Vander’s successor more than Vi. Vander was trying to get Vi to understand the role of being a leader is more than just being ready to fight. Something that Claggor already understood, but if the time came we saw he could raise just as much hell. He was the definition of a gentle giant.
I see Mylo as season 1 Sokka from ATLA. So much growth & character development WAS possible for him if given the time. I also loved how you pointed out that he was actually the least helpful to their group! Powder at least showed great future promise with her skill in machinery, gunfire, and with Vi as her teacher - would definitely be able to hold her own in a fight when she got older. We didn’t see Mylo have a special skill or strength like the others, but it gave great comfort to see Vander support him & believe in him when he needed him the most to break free. I think that gave a glimpse into Vander seeing potential in Mylo though at the time he didn’t see it in himself. He probably was to Mylo what Vi was to Powder - reassurance.
I think in a weird way, I like Mylo the most because I love what he represents. I remember growing up with the saying “sticks & stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me.” While I get that saying is supposed to be empowering, it’s contradictory. Words have power! They can affect your growth, your psyche, and your future. Wounds heal, but for some negative words never go away. You don’t have to be a Christian to understand this verse, but the Bible says life & death are in the power of the tongue [Proverbs 18:21] all that means is you can have what you say! You can speak life or destruction over yourself or others - so be mindful of what you say. I hope people watching Mylo’s demon torture Powder understand how real that is! The whole debate in the series is who created Jinx? Vi or Silco - the sad truth is it was Mylo.

I'd love to see Claggar becomes Vander's successor, but they were shortlived. I never thought about him that way for that reason but liked him as much as the sisters. Mylo's just a poor teen tries to survive, barely. He would fail at that if he would be alone, I might say. He's the weak link afterall, or looks like it. And he made little Powder feel more worthless, those actions made him less likeable for me. Wish they'd be able to stay alive a bit longer though. Arcane made every character so important in their ways, you think the possibilities all the time when you watch the show for the nth time.

Despite his constant criticism and overall pettiness towards Powder, I can’t help but love Mylo and sympathize with him. I think the fandom judged him way to quickly without ever analyzing the reasons behind his actions. Mylo was a child who, like his family, grew up in a hostile environment which required the upmost toughness and skill to survive. Every decision made could cost them their lives, and every mistake could cost them greatly. So, I can certainly understand why he got so frustrated when Powder tagged along with the group and inevitably screwed up. It’s not her fault. She’s child just like they are, but she simply wasn’t equipped to handle the intense situations the others were placing themselves in. She was timid and clumsy and unsure, three things you cannot afford to be in the Undercity, ESPECIALLY during a dangerous heist in Piltover. She wasn’t ready, but Vi brought her along anyway, which made Powder an unnecessary burden and the target of Mylo’s anger and frustration. That, and, as you brought up, Mylo was already nursing a huge inferiority complex of his own stemming from his self-presumed lack of usefulness to the family. I believer that, had he been allowed to grow up and mature, Mylo would’ve seen the error in his way and attempted to atone for his actions towards Powder (in his own “Mylo” way) and truly become a better, kinder person.

Agreed. The only time in the series when his unique skillset is encouraged is when Vander tells him to breathe during the breakout. And he breezes past the locks that caused alot of trouble. Had he been given this same treatment as Powder he might've lived to tell the tale, getting Vander out far quicked than he did.

I have seen many people hate Mylo for being rude to Powder. While it is not right and he should have take responsibility for it, I think people with younger siblings can understand the interactions between Mylo and Powder. When a younger sibling, who you depend on, makes a mistake that turns into a failure, there is moments of anger that tend to be used. I'm not justifying Mylo's rudeness, but I dont think he deserves hate.

I respectfully disagree. While he may have had a point with acknowledging that Powder was the weak link in the group, that doesn’t justify the way he went about it, which was pure verbal abuse, bullying, and partly came from him projecting his own insecurities to take the focus off himself. Because if he doesn’t harp on Powder, or if you removed Powder entirely, who’s the weakest link? He would be.
Plus, Milo forever haunting Powder as the voice that rips into her and tells her nothing but horrible things as part of her PTSD and Schizophrenia is a decent cautionary tale to be careful of our words. Regardless of your intentions, your words and actions toward another person can have lasting, even damaging effects
