Peter Thiel, the cofounder of PayPal and Palantir; early investor in Facebook, LinkedIn, and SpaceX; and the founder of the Thiel Fellowship, which encourages young people to drop out of college to start their own businesses, is interviewed live on stage in front of the members of the Mont Pelerin Society. This wide-ranging conversation covers globalization, the continuing and ever-growing threat from China and what the United States can and can’t do it about, what the rise of Bernie Sanders means for the future of US capitalism, the “derangement” (Thiel’s phrase) of Silicon Valley in the last decade, the scourge of political correctness on campuses and in society at large, and why Thiel thinks we should rethink the doctrine of American exceptionalism.

"I think I think we're not going to find
solutions inside the intellectual
straightjacket in which our universities
in our society put us" Peter Thiel. I could not agree more.
Peter Robinson wrote "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down that wall"? Wow. I didn't know that.
Andrew MacNaughton two legends on stage
Peter discusses this on Ben Shapiro's Sunday Special.
He was a speech writer for Reagan
I think Reagan put that part in but the rest of the speech was Peter Robinson
Holy cow. Talk about leaving a mark on history. I'd just mic drop and retire at that point.
Peter Thiel is one of the most brilliant people of our time. Hopefully he eventually gets the recognition he deserves.
He needs to learn how to speak
Good investor, clearly. As a thinker, just rehashes Ann Rand homilies.
Sure, once he's 90, or dead
This man is the opposite of an empty suit.
You mean ‘Trump’ the ultimate ‘empty suit’
A full thong?
I really like his idea about how to handle student debt. I hope this gets spread around.
"the more education you have, the more brainwashed you are." Exactly. I'm a statistics professor btw
"Much less helpful but much more accurate"
Here's to the difficult truths that will be the key to escape the intellectual straight jackets of our time.
Thiel is a great guest. Have him on often, a true polymath!
Peter Thiel always has something interesting to say. Contrarian but intelligent.
"Contrarian but intelligent" ? I think the average contrarian is probably more intelligent than the average conformist.
Simply brilliant! It is always refreshing to hear a clear thinker such as Mr. Thiel make arguments that are compatible with our capitalistic western model of living, opposing all the flat out nonsensical arguments presented from the left side of the political spectrum trying to revive historically failed concepts in a modern context.
That quote about the french Revolution gave me the chills
7:00 "perhaps it (China) can sort of..." put a boot on the face of the people, keep it there for a LONG time. (Orwell) This whole interview is a gem. I'm coming back to it again.
Perfect! More content with Peter Thiel 🙌🏻
I had to google the word "thermidor", not to be confused with "thermador".
College debt: put debt back on the colleges and universities that give students a bad education and go to a great college or university in your state where you won’t be in debt OR go to a technical college and go into some type of work where you can make tons of money! I went to medical school and have ended up with an average income, killing myself and the plumbing company owner lives in a mansion!
Very interesting interview. Shame it's not even longer!
Peter Thiel, always the deeper look and, clearer to my working class mind. thx Peter R and Hoover.
Painting today so able to listen a a few interviews. Doesn't get much better than this.
(tomorrow fishing in New London NH on a warm day with light breeze - doesn't get much better than that either!!)
Why no one ever asks Peter Thiel why he lives in LA and previously in SF, and not in Utah or Mississipi?
Boy I wish this talk took place 3 weeks later.
Who likes the way he talks about the "eye of Sauron"? talking about it with duping delight.
Great insights and perspectives! Thank you, Mr. Theil for sharing...
Thanks for the interview guys...always love hearing what Peter has to say
On cue, I was speaking about Peter Thiel and his framing of global events recently. Thanks for the good work all of you at the Hoover Institution.
Serious thought-provoking perspectives.
It's Thiel's panopticon...we just live in it.
he asked most of the same questions from his last interview with Peter last year... which is also on this channel. And Peter answered most of the questions with the exact same answers... they did the Michelle Obama, China questions etc all less than 4 months ago D: strange
A Bear Market of ideas and a lack of self awareness seem to go hand in hand in spite of outside influences.
Gads, this guy has great understanding of the modern world, amazing resource for correct thinking !
It was great to hear from you once again. @hooverinstitution will it be too much to ask for an interview with Jordan B Peterson?
17:20 "it would be disturbing if they weren't lying" . funny.
Great some-what open non-scripted conversation.
I love how Theil has such a rhythm in the way he talks. And he’s extremely intellectually.
The maverick/eccentric quality of Thiel's mind/thought processes left Dr. Robinson in unfamiliar territory: no simple batting of familiar forms back and forth. I couldn't reconcile Thiel's classic liberalism and iconoclasm with PayPals conformity with the PC agenda, as manifested through the barring of 'conservative' commentators such as Stefan Molyneux.
I grew suspicious of him when I saw him in bilderberg vids ignoring people that were asking fair questions.
Enjoyed this very much. Thanks.
Peter Theil is the man
Interesting to listen to this one week before the presidential election. Boy has 2020 been one for the record books.
easily one of the great minds of our times
His point at 28:00 about American exceptionalism is pretty great.
Wonderful insight.
Yale/ Harvard as “ Studio 54 “.
I endorse Tiel Party.
@3:42 this quote is often incorrectly used, Zhou Enlai was referring to a 1968 student revolt in France. Would be like Xi Jinping commenting on the current day yellow vests protests and being labeled as forming an opinion on 1789.
The DMV and Post Office work really well, particularly compared to actually existing private sector experiences. See: Ticketmaster.com, booking flights, and so on. I actually think many public and private operations work just fine.
Thank you for the content!
The more edumucated you are, the more brainwashed you are. Thank you Peter Thiel.
first one for peter thiel video!
(Right Place && Right Time) > Wrong Predictions
Fantastic
Extremely thought provoking
owning a house builds no capital. taxes, repairs and interest steal any profit you make for the first 30 years.
On target like a well designed Space X rocket!!!
Very informative, many, many thanks.
Thiel is a great out-of-the-box thinker.
It's rich for Americans to talk about China's "demographic" challenges, without looking at their own house.
Great mind this man has.
What a wonderful conversation! This might just have altered the course of history. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻🔱🔱🔱🔱🇺🇸🇮🇳🇺🇸🇮🇳🇺🇸🇷🇺🇷🇺🇭🇰🇭🇰🤙🇹🇼✝️✝️✝️
This man is pure Brilliance, he gives a perspective which is not talked about a lot.
God unfolds his plan according to his time table. Humans who think they are in control are deluding themselves.
its amazing Thiel never fall for simplification for China US situation
remarkable mind thank you
He is really smart
You fail to discuss the real elephant in the room - The Federal Reserve System. Because of it we do not have capitalism and haven't had it since 1913. It has created Central Planning and price fixing of money.
Peter is great
Mr. Thiel at that time left out that war would be the fourth option.
That's why it was not avoided in the first place!
It was an unrecoginzed part of this equation.
(26:30)
I don’t understand why question about Putin’s regime in Russia have been asked? Specially, when China’ regime discussed...
25:00 the future of Europe seems bright 🥺
Mr. Theil, I want to see the corporation I work for destroyed. Evil, rapacious, arrogant criminals..
24:40 People voting against their own self interest. How stupid are the people working at Google?
Student of René Girard
Door #3 actually looks pretty good.
Peter is my idol
Smartest man alive
good stuff but nothing new if you know Thiel
We too change like the tides, earth quakes and floods. Even the hardest concrete can be picked away back into gravel.
Is Earth just a clearing house for the next existence?
This existence would all seem to be just a lottery.
Love is the immeasurable through it all. Family, Country, neighbor, self, and good luck.
We are on our own out here “in this dark corner of the universe”.

The 4th door is that human becomes a cross planet species.
"Japan is on the side of the US"... a simplistic analysis.
that michelle obama story is just hilarous and disturbing at the same time 16:35
Not bad
GET HYPEED PETER FUCKING THIEL!!! NEW VIDEO!! WHOOOO
first disciple
Very interesting
In china, you cant critise the government, in the west, you cant critise anything.
This is the guy pumping PLTR to ATH
Reform ( Political or economic ) come out of a failed economy not a prosperous one
The Overton window has shifted to the right not the left
Paypal is great! Thank you!
He look like jhon cena
communism: 1. A theoretical economic system characterized by the collective ownership of property and by the organization of labor for the common advantage of all members. 2. Communism. a. A system of government in which the state plans and controls the economy and a single, often authoritarian party holds power, claiming to make progress toward a higher social order in which all goods are equally shared by the people. b. The Marxist-Leninist version of Communist doctrine that advocates the overthrow of capitalism by the revolution of the proletariat. (p.383; American Heritage Dictionary, Third Edition; Houghton & Mifflin; 1992)
AI and human will play out among all.
I very much like Thiel, because he is a such deep thinker and always says fascinating things. Nevertheless, the reactions of the audience and the interviewer in particular are always uneasy because he seems to have problems with every contrarian statement Peter makes. This is unfortunate, it injects a bad taste to the whole session and one can see that Peter is struggling with this atmosphere. If you are calling an original thinker just to make a showcase about how crazy he is, then just invite an ordinary person and listen to their boring ideas. I remember the interviewer from his great sessions with Friedman.
Great mind. Needs a better interviewer who isn’t just reading a list of questions, but rather engages in more depth with some of the insights presented.
Anyway, still good and appreciated.

27:20 Wonder why he picked that country? And to enlist? Lol wtf
This interview did not shine an iota of light on anything. A bright mind like Peter Thiel should focus on entrepreneurship instead of rambling his way into irrelevance. He talks more like a victim rather than a confident genius that I used to think he was.
Hey thiel, how about a little help with freedom of speech on the internet & with payment processing. Lefftest billionaires are killing us, just give us a liitle help to help ourselves.
You help yourself
Theil seems not to be on favour of free speech. His priority was inflicting damage on gawker via hulk hogan in retribution for outing him as a homosexual over upholding constitutional rights to free speech. I'm a big fan of Theil though
Isn't 4chan's /pol/ not enough for you? :) lol
13:53 the way Socialism really works is 'uhm' different (ignores 100 Million deaths)
A complete liar. 🤑🤥
I'm a lawyer who worked in venture capital in NYC. Thiel is a weird chap (occasionally deranged, politically) , a true contrarian - something which comprises of a lot of his identity. He's certainly a smart guy, though not tens of billions ($) of times smarter than his peers. In the VC world the random chance of opportunity is beyond our control. Like a lot of life. No disrespect, but he might not be quite the genius he feels himself to be. And his choice of presidents is crappy. :-) D.A., J.D., NYC
Super interesting. But even Peter is afraid to talk about what really matters - it is biology what drives history/culture. Average Western person in 1950 was way smarter, had healthier sexual/parental instincts, was overall more vital than an average Westener in 2020. We need to focus on reproduction and on immigration. Encourage healthy smart people to have kids at the optimal biological age (early twenties), and encourage parents to take good care of their kids, not dump them into state institutions at 6 weeks.
Malia Obama's name is pronounced Mah-Lee'-uh. I'm no fan of her parents, but your pronunciations make my Hawaii ears smart! 😖. MALIA translates loosely to peaceful or calm, rooted from Mary. Mahalo plenty. 🤙🏽 🌈
Just a suggestion ... your audience is not in the mood for the "polites" of social cocktail chatter about introductions, resumes, and how much the guest may or may not have enjoyed his cub scout little league baseball, how he learned to write and decided to publish a book which was #XX on the Book Club ... blah, blah ... I clicked to hear the guy say what he has to say, not to hob-nob vicariously with "society" and discuss backgrounds. In short: cut to the chase, and don't make us FFWD in the hopes of finding it. P.S. edit: you should know you have maybe 30 seconds in which to interest the viewer with real content, if that.
