- Recorded in Florence, Italy, on October 19, 2022
With his many varied interests in technology, politics, and culture, Peter Thiel has often been described as a Renaissance man. So perhaps it was only fitting that we traveled to Florence, Italy-where the Renaissance originated and thrived for hundreds of years-to speak with him. In this wide-ranging interview, we cover several topics, including his support for candidates across the country who are running as outsiders, why technology has not fulfilled many of its early promises, and why California is still America’s incubator for ideas and growth.

My opinion on why the West stagnated:
- Lost industry to foreign nations, which had hitherto fed off and nourished scientific and engineering advances, and provided a real reward for studying engineering and working blue collar jobs.
- Overabundance of artificially cheap goods, care of zero wage foreign offshored industry, turning people into consumers rather than creators.
- Government growing in size and influence, with regulation growing endlessly blocking technological advancement by default.
- Socialist government policies, to offset the downtrodden former blue collar demographic, creating a permanent underclass and unaccountable elite, creating vast imbalances and giving the government more excuses to expand and crush entrepreneurship in the process.
It has been a while. Glad to see Peter again.
How on earth is this content free. Brilliant interview.
These interviews by Peter Robinson are the #1 reason for me to have a computer and an internet connection. Thoughtful and deep interviews are tremendously interesting , and Mr Robinson's interviews are the best of the best. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!
14:30- the thing about China is that they are… Culturally and historically Chinese. They are not Europeans who are communists, they are China, a very different culture and history.
Peter Robinson is a fantastic interviewer
We didn't get flying cars, but at least we got information & great content like this with one click.
I always enjoy Peter’s insights and alternative takes. He really challenges us all to think. Thanks for interviewing him and sharing.
One of the most enlightening and mentally stirring conversations ever. If only a voting public would think these things through. Thank you for this.
Uncommon Knowledge one of the very few programs worth watching on the internet. Thought provoking and intellectually stimulatiing discussions with an array of fascinating guests and profound interviewing skills.Thank you.
Can we start asking Thiel new questions, please?
Great interview! Thanks Peter and Peter.
An intelligent and captivating discussion. Thank you, Peter and Peter.
Seriously fascinating interview. Thiel has a formidable intellect, with absolutely no pretence.
As a civilization, our weakest point is our spiritual level of development, not lack of technology.
Peter hasn’t been around for a while and I’m thrilled to be able to listen to his current thought! Thank you both.
Great to hear Carroll Quigley quoted at 22:45 by none other than Peter Theil, on the Hoover Institutes podcast! I can see the quote caught our good old presidential speech writer Peter Robinson by surprise when tied into the discussion of the California partisan divide. Quigleys sober look at American history, is of great concern to the foundational beliefs of modern American history as it is taught in public schools. If you want to further your knowledge in regards to American history, Hoover Institute actually produced a great fellow by the name of Antony Sutton, who wrote incredible works, greatly quoting Quigley throughout, that I suggest reading as soon as possible. He is a more condensed understanding of Quigley's 1000 page books such as Tragedy and Hope, focusing more on our foundational understanding of the architects who designed and profited from the second world war.
I'm sure its misspeak but Nuclear power plants are not "dual use". Bombs have pure fissile material (over 90%) while plants only have around 4%.
these are great, Peter, they are just too short! would love to have them go 90-120 minutes if possible.
Peter is unbiased as far as I can tell. Most reporters and interviewers lack this trait.
Thank you SO MUCH for this dialogue. This is therapy that money can not buy and I am SO grateful to you for this equal opportunity to learn from some of the greatest minds in our world. You are making waves Peter Robinson, as well as many of the great divergent thinkers you interview.
A poem…
Peter Thiel brings to light,
things that hide in plain sight
Excellent
One of the most famous members of ole "PayPal mafia".. Absolutely brilliant guy
It’s sort of sad that someone like Peter Thiel would never be elected to office. And he wouldn’t want to be. The guy is just so damn prescient.
Peter Robinson always has very thought-out, in-depth interviews.
Another brilliant interview....why I love UA-cam.
Thank The Hoover Institute and Peter Robinson….YT censors🤮
Hi Peters. Good to see you two again.😘
Was really looking forward to Peter Thiel coming on the show again.
OK, but when Peter Thiel talks about policing keystrokes, that is mass surveillance.
he gives me hope
Peter I always enjoy your interviews. Another great one.
It's an interesting idea I haven't heard before that everyone lived under the fear of nuclear annihilation for so long that now we are afraid to create new technologies. I suppose one counter argument to that, that just occurred to me would be the biolabs that are still creating new diseases. That's a pretty obvious technology that can easily be used as a weapon that we are still progressing.
new Peter Thiel video - like from the first second. The man literally lives in the future
"We were promised flying cars and all we got was a 140 characters" 🤣
I love Theil his insights are always worth hearing. Thank you Hoover!
What an interesting and intelligent conversation. I feel 1% smarter..
Fantastic talk. Thank you!
Hoover getting more hip with Star Wars references in its titles.
Another banger!! Thanks so much for the content!!
I appreciate his views on college
"Greetings Earthlings", Peter Thiel
Thank you so much for this!
God Bless Peter Thiel.
Thank you for your great interviews Peter
I could not have agreed with Peter more.
Sorry, but maybe ask him something new, this is a replica of his old interview(s)
Thank you, great interview
one interesting thing to me is its hard to tell exactly the limits of the application of a technology, and which ones will sort of run into a physical limitation versus which techs are poised for a leap in sophistication. batterys are a recent example, they have enabled smaller and smaller tech devices, which enabled entirely new products, etc. The generational impact issue is completely related to high housing prices in desirable locations. of course if young generation cant afford property, they cant/wont build the same wealth as their parents (unless they inherit it).
That was great. Thanks.
Yes yes yes, thank you
Excellent thank you
Brilliant⭐️
Lol "by the time this airs we'll know (if Blake masters has won)"... it's two days after the election and we still don't know and may not for some time!
What is the paper mentioned at 38:14?
Thought provoking, well done.
Thank you gentlemen!
Great to see this vid get so many views and deserves many more likes.
Those (Like Henry Rowen) who decided that somehow China will become a Democracy (by 2015 :):)
are either feeling a bit daft or pleased their bs lasted another 25 years.
Personally, I feel it's the latter. I don't think they were that thick.
I don't remember seeing reports that China said anything like that would happen.
We thought this would happen and maybe that that too.. I don't think so.
It was a fifty year plan, since Nixon & Co.
Very interesting interview!
More Thiel videos please
TL:DR Sugestion. Place some Bookmarks to make it more appealing
Thiel is absolutely of “The Machine”
We were promised flying cars, what we got were ultra cheap ultra safe flights from NY to LA that literally anyone could afford. We got open heart surgery on an out-patient basis. We got bigger, quieter, safer, cleaner homes. We got the internet, infinite information the ability to communicate with anyone anytime anywhere. Flying cars exist, they are called helicoptors, and the are very expensive to maintain because when you put something in the air, the oversight requirements go up 100x. And what is the advantage of being in the air?
thanks for the video
Hi Hoover Institution- how come you guys drop new videos and youtube does not immediately alert me. I get junk notification, but your brilliant work?
I love the analogy of the Republican party, the Star Wars rag tag group, you got Princess Leah, CHewbacca, Hans Solo, and C3PO's types, that are a rebel alliance, but are diverse.... love that and it's so true! Gonna steal that one.
Excellent discussion
Peter is incredibly smart - an obvious statement. I really like him !
Glad this power is used for good
Mr. Thiel, good thoughts. I'll make anything you wish to build, fast. look me up. Thank you for the reason and ideas.
If capitalism is an expression of free will and the ability to navigate between Armageddon and the Antichrist, then which systems of financial expression are going to lead one way or another? If all companies become public and are owned by one corporation you get one anticompetitive regime. If all companies are private and ownership is diverse you have the risk of a rogue innovator. That said, I know which one has more counterbalances.
He is one of my favorite “thinkers” and has invested his money in Blake Masters in Arizona election. I guess this was taped before any of this happened.
Nice dialogue
America needs to be MORE than California.
Peter Thiel needs to educate the republican leadership
Peter Thiel and Steven Pinker seem to be on opposite sides as to wether we are making progress. I get the feeling Thiel is starting from how he wants things to be and builds a philosophy from there.
He looks younger… again.
Peter is an elite thinker
What happened? The private sector became emperor - that’s what happened.
He emerges
decided:subscribed
Thiel is the closest thing to a real live vampire, don’t insult the rebels like that.
Can Peter Thiel save Germany from the people trying to destroy it?
Peter is the man
You need to talk with Perer Zeihan
I feel Thiel
Who says we have to “beat” China or they’ll “beat” us ? The current and future success of everyone now depends on interdependent relationships that benefit all parties. My iPhone is designed here but made there; we need them to buy our T bonds and they need the US dollar, AND our economy which backs it, to stay viable.
Robinson’s whole premise here is obsolete and zero-sum thinking that can only end in failure given the globalized tech-empowered world we have NOW, which isn’t going away, no matter what your political attitude.
By the time this airs we'll know the outcome in Arizona.....
Oh my sweet summer child....
This is reason.
Advanced technologies are being withheld from the people.
The future of governance ideology is won by that which harnesses technology most astutely. Will the wanton use of technology of one country, Machiavellian in history, allow them to come to ascendancy but eventually become their downfall, at the expense of humanity?
Maybe China saw what was happening in the western Democracies and saw that against their national interest.

33:30 "True liberalism has never been tried"
In fact true liberalism has been tried and worked quite well. We stopped enforcing the law due to the advent of mass psychology (propaganda), which is now disintegrating as we face a larger world where information is radically more free and porous
We dont know the answer because of the way the voting is run in Arizona , the republicans were not in charge of correcting the voting irregularities

the greatest americans i see weren't born in america. peter is one of them.
Pete needs to go the Bezos route, get on TRT and start a space program
First.
