What RAID setup would YOU choose!!???
Raid-Z1 with 4 disks, and one of them as an hotspare.
I was thinking Raid 0 or 5 with SSD for active projects (possibly DAS) + a 2nd NAS in Raid 1, 5 or 10 with SATA III Drives. SSD is limited to 2Tb at the moment and is pricier, but is faster, totally quiet, more reliable, lasts longer (no moving parts), uses less power. When I used to own an agency, having a NAS was a must have (can't live without one). For my video editing as a hobby, DAS (With a fast connector) would work fine. I wish Synology had a Thunderbolt 3 / USB-C connector like Drobo, QNAP and others, this would open them up to wider prosumers market. Please let Synology know that having that would really tip the scales when deciding between them and the competition.
I use SHR-2. A small addition: Raid 10 is less secure than Raid 6 since theoretically 2 drives can fail, but not in the same raid compound. The failure probability of two drives is higher in an event of one drive failing, since the existing drives have to work a lot on rebuilding or copying, especially in a Raid 5.
My question is, can you change RAID setups if you regret your choice? For example: from a RAID setup 5 to a RAID setup 0.

I am glad to have searched for Synology and ran into this. I have been a geek for my entire 20 year career. This is the most fun I have had watching an explanation on RAID. Pretty dope!
To make sure that people aren't being misled by this video, I'd like to correct one quite significant error that was said about RAID 1 and RAID 10, and potentially provide a better explanation about some of their configurations.
RAID 0 uses a "split" function that basically divides individual files into a number of "pieces" that equal to the HDD count in the array, which leaves you with the sum of *all* HDDs of your total capacity. (Note, that I intentionally said "split" rather than "stripe" because the latter one is used by RAID 5/6 configurations)
However, RAID 1 uses a "copy" function that copies whole files into individual HDDs, leaving you with a total capacity of a single drive, no matter how many drives you have.
And that's where you made a mistake trying to explain the RAID 10 configuration, because you've already explained it as RAID 1, which isn't true. RAID 10 isn't its own configuration, but rather a combination of already mentioned RAIDs: RAID 0 + RAID 1. The way how it works is the same with RAID 0, with the only difference that individual files are split into half of the total HDD count, and each unique part of the file is assigned to 2 different drives. This results you with half of the total drive capacity, no matter how many of them you have.
I really hope that people will find this comment (helpful), and that the video author will make it obvious to admit of the mistake so that future viewers won't be misled by what's said in the video.

i still use cold storage but i invoice for Samsung t5's for each clients project so there's always it's own backup and never cross contaminated with any other client's files. accumulating a stack, but they're small enough to catalog in some ikea containers.

Great video, one question that i never really see answered though is with a RAID 5, when you run out of storage do you need to replace all drives or can you just add a drive?
I often use 0 - when I have backups of my backups already. Works very well for utilizing movie, music or photo drives. That’s why they include a 0 option.
Hey Sidney, can you use SSD SATA drives instead of HHD SATA Drives for the NAS ? and would that make working from the NAS directly for Video editing (connected via cable) faster?

My job this week was to rebuild a raid 6 array. They had 3 bad drives... So. They were SOL as I like to say. I recommend this (raid6) if you can do it, why? Hypothetical: let's say you have a drive fail, you are tight on funds. So it'll be a few weeks, maybe even months until you can replace it. It will definitely calm your nerves knowing you can afford to fail another in that timeframe.

I have a 1513+ 5 bay 5 wd red 4tb drives, I will follow your advice and go with a raid 5, what software is best to use to get the photos from my pc hard drive to the NAS 1513+ thanks that has been my only problem is how to get the files from m y hard drive to the nas and how to auto back up. any help would be appreciated. thanks

I have two 1T nvme ssd's. One in a 4.0 slot and the other in a 3.0. would a raid configuration slow the performance of the 4.0 to the 3.0 speed or just the opposite? Also is it safe to change to a raid config with data present on both disks? Thanks for any help.
Quick question; If I film weddings, and my client wants all the RAW footage, (lets say, 1tb), could I use a nas to send them all that footage directly even if they dont have a nas? So I guess that my question is : How is the very large file sharing from a nas to a client? Thanks :)

I find myself suffering from 'age-based evolution' in my externals. I have an OWC 4x4TB RAID5 that's been a solid performer, but it's T-Bolt 2, which is obsolete. And slower. So... Got a GDrive 2x10TB Raid 0 USB-C for all my current work, and weekly/semi-monthly backups from the G-drive. I was waiting on a Drobo, but the COVID19 pretty much sank all my plans, and I was lucky to get the G-Drive at all. My point, if I have one, is that connection protocol and speed seems to be a problem, too. One that keeps tripping me up. Now Lightning is disappearing, too. Lol. Life, it's what happens despite our best plans.

@@SidneyDiongzon It's solid. Very VERY fast, and very little latency, which was driving me a bit crazy, as I'm just a stills guy, and the OWC would spin down every couple of shots in PS, so I've been leaning into SSDs - a BlackJet two-bay VX-2SSD - more of a dock, really, but fastest thing I've ever used. It's a bit, well, cobbled together. :)
What would you prefer Synology DS1019+ or QNAP TVS-472XT for storing 4k video projects and playing 4k plex?

I have NAS Storage, RAID 5 configured with 1 volume, Right now data is 43% only but issue is after 10 or 15 days storage will be reaching to 100%, then it will be auto refresh to 43%, My concern is... Between the process getting WARNING ERROR. Please suggest me how fix it. Don't want to reach 100% Unnecessary

Great explanation - but you may be costing me more money if I move from RAID 1 TO RAID 10. :) If I'm going to be copying files from Mac and PC, what format should I use on the drives? Some of the Macs would be old OS with INTEL chips, some M2 (APFS) chips.
what if a parity HDD fails?
raid 0 but how do i make them raid 0? is it even possible for my hdd and my m.2 to make the raid 0?
RAID 0 for workspace and SnapRAID for storage. I’m old school. I like to control my backups.
Your explanation of RAID 1 was actually explaning RAID 01 - a RAID 1 over multiple (2 in your case) RAID 0s.

Wow annoying that everyone is getting into NAS setups. Because everyone thinks they are experts now. I love how you fail to mention on a Raid 10 if two drives fail across the y axis all your data is gone. Okay two drives failing within days or at the same time probably won’t happen. But it’s possible
