- The hill climb season is a uniquely British tradition that pushes rider and bike to the limit. We take a look at the build process of a bespoke fixed gear bike, specifically built for our own Joe Norledge and the 2016 UK National Hill Climb Championships.

As a certified welding inspector I really appreciate the attention to the finished weld product mentioned here.
Lovely bike and film, looking forward to part two. Great work!
We're in the presence of a BikeRadar legend here, people! Chris was one of the prime architects of the channel. His influence on our output continues to this day, even though he's now plying his craft as a video editor elsewhere. Chapeau, Christophe!
BikeRadar oh shucks! The only thing I have been an architect of is my own downfall. Its great to see the channel going from strength to strength, been some really great features recently, keep it up! Hopefully I will get out for a ride with you guys soon
We should do that. As soon as the days draw out we'll go for a post work ride!
..one of the best films, for a long long time...great bike also, ever thought of going into production with it,lots of hill climbers out there would love one,i'm sure..thanks again.
Thanks for the kind words, tim. Glad you enjoyed the video.
..Thankyou.
I was very jealous of this bike when I saw it out at the hill climbs! Nice to learn more about it.
Great work Joe. Nice 20th place finish. As for all the people moaning- The lengths that people go to in bike prep / body & training will never make scene to a non hill climber. As a keen hill climber myself it great to see BikeRadar / Joe putting this video together. Chapeau Joe for running a single speed, i run a geared set up but i still got bogged down near the top losing a ton of time so you probably made the right choice. Tony
Great looking bike. Cool video. Thanks bikeradar and engineered team.
Let's see more hill climbing stuff! Love it.
Bike looks amazing!!!
19th overall! Well done!
Excellent bit of engineering, Love the old school style with modern materials. :-)
One of the coolest bikes to me. Amazing welds.
great presentation of hill climbing...the bike is a dream.
The finish on that frame came out BEAUTIFULLY
Gorgeous bike. That frame is stunning and it's craftsmanship you don't see in carbon
I really like the looks of that frame. Normally I dislike Al frames because of the big fluffy welds. Filing them down makes it look 100x better -- and I've always wondered why no one thought about the stress risers from the rough bead.
you guys are the most objective cycling channel, never sell out
This was awesome. Well done.
That is one fine machine!
Fascinating. Great bike too!
can i request on behalf of all your viewers that you go back and get it fully drilled afterwards?
Haha! NO way - wouldn't be aero.
You could just put a strip of ducttape over the holes. Aero enough?
Good idea. But helicopter tape might be better. Aero by nature!
.
The new dura ace 9100 would look amazing with that frame colour
need more videos like this
badass looking bike!
Was it better than the Rose X-Lite Team used last year?
Joe Norledge lol is that you in the video?
Slightly tempted to build a super light ss bike again for blasting the local hills with
balleur Get a fixed gear, it's better for uphills ;)
You can't coast on a fixed gear . You'll tire out easily .
Seb K All my PR are on my FG.
but yeah if it's a really long hill it can be difficult.
But what a pleasure to smoke some roadie on proper hill with q fixex gear haha
That would be ace .
You'll ditch the saddle and the seat post when racing? Or is the race regulation must have those?
man, this vid I am simply stunned. what a piece of craftsmanship. Art?
Awesome looking bike :)
more fixedgear bicycle video please :)
it's a really nice bike! could we get a list of the parts used? good luck for the race!
Part 2 is awesome! Thanks for being so detailed and sharing it! cheers!
its low key
bang bang bang ding ding go go go
why not use a carbon frame?
Good question. Partly down to cost. Partly down to the greater design flexibility in terms of geometry and available tubing. And our experience with using Scandium alloy for our road race bikes. Given where we ended up in terms of stiffness to weight, carbon would not have had *that* much benefit. Very much summarised. I hope that makes sense.
David - Founder Engineered Bikes
David Fong thank you for such a detailed response. It's great to hear additional details from the bike's creator
David Fong thank you for clarifying mister fong, very informing :)
two question, fist why can't you put 34 or bigger on the back wheel for the climb, also why are road bikes especially budget more expensive then mtb 29' bikes?? don't they have less "technology" then road bikes
I think you should look into carbon composites a bit more. The stiffness of Aluminium is fixed, that of carbon/epoxy composites varies with the modulus of the fibre used so the stiffness of the tube can be tailored to properties needed such as wall buckling, frequency of the response or strength needed. Round prepreg carbon tubes are not that hard to make and i guess that it being a hill climb you are not over worried about the aerodynamics. Might be worth a look for your next project. Rule of thumb for a 70% unidirectional Carbon tube v Aluminium is: for the same thickness the tube is nearly half the weight.
Nice bike though, good work.
incredible bike, so sad it seems the company didn't make it. Would love a bike like this in the city w the front brake, ultra light weight singlespeed.. perfect!
Great work
Best of luck on the race then!
Joe you better get a top 5!
What is the gear for that bike? 39/20?
5kg is boat anchor. my foil with 2*11 53/36 11/28 and two brakes is 5,3kg
That's heavier dude .
Very cool. What width handlebars are they and is wider better for torquing or do they add too much weight?
Climbing is all about the power to weight ratio. Sure an non legal UCI bike will help you get up a hill faster.
it is a non legal bike
Oh yea human torcher testing I LOVE IT!!!!
I wonder how one of these track guys like hoy would perform on this event.
Sorry I'm french and i didn't understand the hole video... did you tell the weight of the bike in the video (if not how much is it ?)
how much did this cost?
what gear is used on something like this?
totally! Just saw the new video as well. Looks super intense!
Please excuse my ignorance, but why not a full carbon frame? Are the wheels carbon too? In any case wish best of luck!! :)
Please see my reply to the similar question above. 😊
David
Btw, yes. The race wheels were carbon.
it is great bike build...i appreciate it..the overly important rocket science talk was funny tho.. yes you did build very light stiff track bike. Benotto build 5,4 kg bike for Ole Ritter and his hour record attempt in Mexico city in 1974 and it was light and stiff track bike just like this one. Ritter road 48,879 meters touch below Eddy Merckx record.
very cool
Why go to such lengths to make it light without cutting the steerer tube down?
whats the point of ultra light climbing bike if you can't put 34 or bigger on the back?
I thought this was a light build
what's with the crossed front wheel?
What brand is that bike ?
Sooo what about the music which my ears caught up at 5:29?
What parts are used in the drivetrain?
if they were skimping on grams with the paint why did they go and put a brake on?
so this one is 5,1 kg and the rose with gearing was 5,4 kg? something went wrong i guess
Fixed gear bikes have much less components and it is not rare for a high end aluminum bike to be lighter than a low end carbon bike. Since the frame is a super high end aluminum with some carbon, it is not surprising to have it weigh a tad bit more than something like a tarmac or supersixevo.
I have carbon frame...
12-36 has good range of high & low gears...
12,13,15,17 good high end minus 14t cog
28,32,36 good low end for hills
To upgrade or not?
I was debating on whether or not to spend $4600 + $460 tax for new 2017/18 Paris Roubaix Expert + ~$2000 more for clipless pedals, Garmin, etc... The 2017/18 Paris Roubaix Expert is truly a beautiful bike, with a lot of new technology...
However, I decided to keep that money and upgraded my 2008 Paris Roubaix Expert Triplet instead, which already has clipless & Garmin and only had to add 12-36 cassette, RD hanger & new chain : $133 vs $5000-$7000 for new bike and accessories...
I suspect there's no paved roads I won't be able to climb with 36t in rear and 24t in front, bike only weighs 18-20 lbs, plus I still have fast gears for down hills and flats...

So taken details for a light weight raid Fixie, really difficult to do as either heavy 'track ' spec and angles, or heavy cheap town hipster bikes.....Wheels ( the hubs) and frame( ie the ends) being the real issue. Much vibration through the Alloy frame? Would love a 953/carbon fork set up....Broke student at present by great reference video....Catford and Bec being my hill climbs in my youth, team prize winner on the Catford once.
which BB did you use because your using a rotor 3d+ crank set which I think is bb30
wow cool didn't know that thanks
Nice!
Stunning bike and interesting film. Please go easy on the slow motion footage though. Was overdone in my opinion. Drama is more effectively built by a more judicious use of this technique. Anyway, enjoyed the film.
does this frame will be on production?
Hi Tom, thanks for the comment. Each of our bicycles are hand made to order and there are no plans to put this design for Joe's bike into production at the moment. Thanks again.

How much was the frame manufacturing process?
Hi J S - As delivered to Joe with custom graphics the bike would sell for £2450 - with the polished finish but simpler graphics it would be about £1800 F&F. David - Founder Engineered Bikes
If the whole race is out of the saddle climbing, then why not just take the seatpost and saddle off the bike to save weight?
Why didn't you use a full carbon frame and cut the steerer to save a few grams
I’m enjoying the bike so far ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.
Cosmetics was the most time consuming and focused part
That gear on your bike is so high.
what did he place?
Gearing?
what was the chosen ratio?! I climb with 17-44
pedro silva That's a nice climbing ratio
TheCannabisCorner sometimes its hard, specially when is plus 10% inclination, but I never stop! hehe ^_^
Why do the hill climbers always grind? Like from the moment they start riding all the way to the finish.
Good question. I'm wondering the same thing. Perhaps to make it look more difficult?
No man, they just cant turn the cranks because they are OVER-GEARED!
How much cost complete bike ?
Hi Luka - please see my reply to J S's comment a bit further down. :-) David - Founder Engineered Bicycles
i have to ask why not just use a carbon bike with the same ethos? although- i understand it may be very difficult and expensive to find someone to build a custom such high end carbon frame
Hi, Please see my response to an earlier version of the same question.
David Fong - Founder, Engineered Bikes
my apologies, i should have seen that-
exactly as i thought, i hope i didn't offend you by asking!! best of luck with your development in that field, I'm sure its pretty exciting for you guys!!
an absolutely beautiful bike by the way, i think/ hope you'll sell a lot from this! certainly i would be along if i could afford it!!
Not at all - 😎
A fixed gear hill climbing by will never give you the optimum cadence required in a hill climb. Especially if you have grades that ranged from 6% to 14%+. If this bike had at least 5 gears it would be cool.
Perfect for trustafarian-hipster fixie aficionados
Ultimate marginal gain. If the climb is only a 1-2min effort, only charge your Garmin to about 5-10% battery because a full battery is always heavier than a flat battery.
looks healthy.
why not go for a seat mast?
Joe was keen to stick with the conventional seat post to keep adjustability and allow it to easily pack down if required. The design wasn't just about making the lightest frame - there were a lot of considerations to make it work in the real world. There were quite a few crazy ideas that unfortunately didn't make it from my sketches simply because they didn't make sense in the real world or because they would have compromised other aspects of the bike's performance.
David - Founder Engineered Bikes
You would go faster on my 4.8kg mtb . Then again I designed it for off road use .
Low-key??? Low-key: not elaborate, showy, or intensive; modest or restrained.
When I think hill climb I do NOT think low-key. : O
The graphics should have been black.. that would have finished the bike off!
Thanks for the comment - indeed, black graphics would have looked amazing, but this would have meant adding paint and lacquer, and with it extra weight. The decision to bead blast the graphics into the frame was inspired by the whole function and ethos of the bike, which is to make it as light as possible. While the material removed in bead blasting is minimal, it certainly doesn't add any unwanted grammes!
Adrian - Creative Director, Engineered Bicycles
Adrian Ridley cool.. that's good to know! Thanks
pretty slack chain that
7 minutes video about building a climbing bike and never mention about gear ratio. Really?.. pfff
Watch the second video in the set to learn how Joe set up the gears
Bike has a lot of carbon parts, you should have purchased a carbon frame.
2023 anyone?
Hummm en español
"Building the Perfect Hill Climb Bike", talking half the video about the design (don't care about it) and no time about the spec! And to be honest, if u want to make the perfect hill climbing bike, make it out of carbon! Also I don't get the trend about fixed bikes, there was a reason they started to put gears on bikes, it's a evolution, why go back, hipersters, I don't understand them?! Fixed gear=track, all the rest=gears!
Joe Norledge so then why were u quicker on the x-lite that is heavier? And would the winner have won with gears, probably also, maybe even faster! The fastest gear is the right gear and that's alot easier with more than 1! I find the single speed movement a bit BS, like they want to be special not because it's the best for what they want to do with it, it's ultimately a comprimise. I will be waiting on the video though, maybe u can change my mind (probably not though). Hiperster was an autocorrect (Dutch is my phones language) from hipster, because when I see a single speed bike, that's what's riding it.

Why does bike radar make these ridiculous videos. I mean...great to watch for entertainment but who can afford something like this??
"great to watch for entertainment" - probably your answer just there...
i stopped watching as soon as i realied he was using weenie parts with a non carbon frame. for this discipline is has to be carbon for low weight

Oh, an ad...
Such cynicism! Engineered are two guys who run the business part time alongside their day jobs... they don't have a huge marketing budget! To be perfectly clear: BikeRadar wont make any money from this video, other than UA-cam pre-roll.
style over design build ..
hipsters pretending to be engineers
That bike is impressively light. stop hating.
Perfect Hill Climb Bike with 1 gear? nice joke :P
I don't feel so bad about you rinsing me up Bellmont now.
