@@Bearhawk_Life I sold it CubCrafters. They are using it for promotional and R&D work. Fortunately it’s been on the cover of magazines and showcased all over.
I also wanted to say I love your multi-camera views. They've been awesome to help brief myself on what a good approach should be like and what to look for when I go to these awesome Idaho strips.
Wow! I liked watching it all, every part, both angles. That’s one heck of an approach, and you nailed it skillfully. Nice airplane you are flying… subscribed.
Thank you. Mountain flying requires a lot. Those things and too many others to mention. Amy Hoover wrote a book. Mountain and Canyon Flying that’s a good start for someone in an introduction
There’s a lot of history to the strips going way back. Most of them were farms. Including this plot. With the advent of the airplane a hundred years or so ago the homesteaders put in nice strips. This and many of the ranches and farms were burned and buried by the forest service back in the 70s. Thankfully senator Frank Church had all these gems grandfathered in when the land was procured by the federal government and turned into the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness. Some private land owners were able to hold out. Some of the strips are better maintained than others. All are amazing cherished treasures to get people in and safely out of the remote wilderness. There are still some artifacts at this place 👍
@@DMBall hmm not sure what you mean by that comment? That’s okay. There have been many airplane incidents. A few at this very strip by inexperienced pilots. I meant- in and safely out for all those we fly in to enjoy in their own way and the many who have been rescued in these very remote areas that accessed by other means too.
Many of these backcountry one way no go around approaches an engine failure will be very difficult. I do fly constantly assessing what I’d do if I lost the engine. Where I’d tried to put it. I always fly with survival gear and sat comms. This type of flying is not for everyone. It’s far more difficult and dynamic than it shows in UA-cam. There’s many environmental factors you can’t see or feel. And this is by no means the limit of what many pilots do every day.
Wow wow wow 😮 a winding approach for a short and narrow strip. Bravo. Very nicely done. 180° turn at the end of the landing for takeoff. Does that mean that landing is mandatory and go around is impossible ? Thank you for the video
Thank you. Yes at a certain point there’s no go around at this, and many other backcountry strips. You must be precise. Once you commit you’re landing. 👍
Can you tell us your C185’s gross weight? At what weight were you flying? How much fuel did you have? And, what IAS was your approach? Thanks. Loved the video.
Thank you. I don’t remember this particular day. I was fairly light, just me, and camping gear. However operating here at full gross weight isn’t a problem with this airplane. It’s has a nice slope. It all depends on environmental factors 👍
@@klpilot Skipper, you are the real deal. And so is that 185. I just wish you would take a look at that panel. Man, oh, man. There's nothing like a capable aircraft in the hands of a capable pilot. We're talking Bob Hoover levels of skill here. Stay safe!
thank you. It’s vital in my scan, however at certain points in the approach there’s very little information it can help me with. The airspeed indicator becomes primary and a scan for anything else abnormal. A lot of it is feel and sight picture. Only gained through experience. The fancy stuff is really for flight planning/cross county/IFR stuff.
We have to see it all and feel the rest. Carefully plan, assess, monitor, scan, cross check- repeat. It’s not easy. But with a lot of practice it feels like home.
Awesome flying. Beautiful place. However, there’s no plan B if the engine stumbles or quits. Even a little wind shear can ruin your day when you are low and slow. Better have absolutely top tier maintenance and beyond top level skills if you are gonna do much of this type of flying. Even so, it’s a roll of the dice.

Runway?
That take off is nuts!
Yes but the approach is far more difficult and unforgiving
Dewey is a fun strip; good fishing not much traffic; beautiful 185
Thanks!
That’s amazing! No room for error! Not to many people get to do this. Incredible scenery
Thank you and yes 👍
Some serious skills there! Nice work!

What an approach .... incredibly tight.. looked so close to the trees and ridges....crikey !!
It’s a fun one
