@@shugemery Thanks for the review :) I just found your channel and I love it. I can only hope to have as much energy as you, once I'm your age :D Keep it up!
I really like how the bug net on the XL goes over the ridgeline and how the foot box is more open than the non-XL Draumr. However, I'm disappointed that they didn't implement a door option on the new Borg tarp for better weather protection. I get that the hammock body has wings, but I'd prefer not to get the hammock wet in the first place.
Really different hammock from every other. Kudos to designers. Love the transformable mode from bed to lounge to chair. Great pad integration too. But April 2019 (at best?) - boy that is a long wait. And total weight of 3kg (6.5lbs) without sleeping bag is not for a trail hiking - more a car camping hammock. But sure look super comfy. I am a bit concerned about weather protection. The tarp is a bit skinny on the sides. Late night storm with unfortunate side winds and you are going to be swimming in comfort in no time.
Really though it has as much protection tarp-wise as any hammock hex tarp. I have ridden few storms and stayed totally dry....ua-cam.com/video/ekn_PBsGB6c/v-deo.html Yes, it is heavy but versatile. I have backpacked with mine but only on one-nighters. It makes up for it just sitting and hanging in the woods.

Draumr sent me their first hammock years ago to see if I could cut their weight down. At over 5 pounds, I did not see the point. I sent it back and told them to contact THE hammock pro, in my opinion, you Mr. SHug. Did they reach out to you, or did you contact them? I am loving my UL gamma 90 degree hammock myself. I cannot lay like a banana in a gathered end hammock. This hammock is barely over a pound and he has since put out a lighter one, the 2.0. I want to say thanks to you Shug, for all your videos. You helped me skip all the problems and issues you had to endure. As a devoted fan, I would like to suggest an update video on 5, 8, 12 or whatever "quick tips" for hangers like us. Fjøl is the word we Norwegians use for cutting boards, it's used as a slang for snowboard to. It comes from the Norse word - fjǫl- which means splitted plank/ board. It's very fitting to the huge sleeping mat.
Great review Shug, thanks! Got a Draumr XL late last winter and used it around -7C overnight with their Fjol Winterlight (R value 5) pad. Used it extensively through the summer and love it, but now wondering how I can maximize warmth for use in -20/30C (-4/-22F) in mid-winter. Have you tried it in cold temps?
It sure looks like it could use a larger tarp? I will be motorcycle camping and the extra weight is not big deal. What other tarp would work good with this hammock? Thanks for all your videos. May God Bless you and your family.
I am interested in that last no tree set up you did. Any chance of a video on that? Also, have you tried going to ground with the XL? I have attempted different ground setups with 2.0 and the bug net sat on my face so was curious if new features would address that.
I will be doing video on that stand fairly soon....www.tensaoutdoor.com/support/ Not set it up on ground yet but imagine with new bunet design it should be off the face.
Dang it Shug, you keep showing us all the neat hammoks, giving us all these great tips on using a hammok and you just might get me off the ground, maybe ;>) Thank You for a very informative review!!!
I've always been attracted to the obscure or not so main stream stuff when it comes to hammocks. And now that I've got a bridge to go with my GE's, maybe I'll give this a try one day too. I wonder if Amok , or someone else, will design an UQ of sorts to use it in even colder climes?
It is a pad dependent hammock. Better to use a pad with higher R-rating below 20º or so. I am not sure they are planning a UQ. But you for sure could mess with trying it. It need the pad to hold it's shape.
Excellent informative video as always! I didn't see the rubber grommet at suspension ends. Does the suspension buckles stop rain from continuing down to hammock?
The buckles do act as rain break. Of course you can always take loose end of strap and tie that on the inside of the buckle under the tarp as back-up if doubtful. Not had mine wet and it was in my backyard in several big storms.
Appreciate the follow-up and thank you for all you do for the hanging community. I guess a pre purchase is in the near future. Hoping this will be adequate for winter use as well with maybe a bigger tarp design.
So Shug, now that you have tested all these various hammock designs, which one do you think would be best for a side sleeper. Unfortunately, I've recently developed some sort of sleep apnea that prevents me from sleeping on my back now. I currently own a Warbonnet Blackbird XL, a Dream Hammock Raven, and an older Hennessy. Thanks for creating such great content!
This Amok is so good for side sleeping. Many folks I know have no problem side sleeping in a Warbonnet or Raven. It is just a personal preference. The Draumr is very wide open though..and you will be on a pad.
Can I use different straps. Straps with other sewn in loops to hang gear I.e. keep your bag off the ground under the tarp. Just have to keep the buckle it looks like
Hi Shug, I just received my new Amok UL and I am first timer to this product. It does come with some water drip on the suspension but I do wonder if you had any problems in that matter waking up to soaked quilt and gear? Thanks👍
If I hadn't just bought a Warbonnet Blackbird XLC I would be all over this. I certainly am one of those people who saw the sideways design of the original Amok Draumr and thought it was awesome and was then disappointed by the size limitation (6'6" over here). Maybe someday.
Too bad they don't offer a trade in on my 3.0. I just can't justify another shell out, like that. Love the foot box change, the bug net change and the suspension.
Shug, Please tell us more about hanging the Draumr on the Tensa 4! I was thinking during your demo of the Tensa 4 that it it would be a great combo with Draumr, exhibiting sounder geometry and solving potential pole "ride in" encounters.... 😎
like ever other hammock water runs down the suspension system only way I've got around it was to hang another hammock under with my gear in a plastic bag in bottom hammock
Wow Looks cool! My son might like this one. Checking the weight cap of 400 lbs he should fit it nicely being he is 6'3" 250ish. I don't worry about bears...I brought my own.
Howdy, I am short (5'7) and I have used draumr3 for the past three years. I love this hammock! I am super interested by all the updates (head room, and footbox) and I was wondering if you think going XL would be a worthy upgrade or if the improvements are only marginals? Thanks for your amazing work (also, thanks because YOU helped me find the perfect lay in the draumr... I always had a caving under my knees and your advice on hammock forum to tighten up a bit the leg straps really made the Draumr my favorite hammock of all times :D
Very good video on the Amok, Shug. Watching your presentation of same, their hammock looks to be very comfortable, indeed. I have to wonder, however, in the absence of an available underquilt, opting for only an insulated mattress, instead, if this set up will keep you warm on windy nights with temps in the 20's and below, covering yourself with even the best of top quilts or sleeping bags??? If you can't stay warm, it doesn't matter how comfortable you are. Given your experience with Mn. severe cold weather hammock camping, I eagerly await your take on just how much cold weather this set up can take and still be warm. In really cold weather, I have never been warm enough hammock camping with just an insulated mattress, no matter its R value. I have always brought my underquilt, given extreme cold to knock the wind off my derrier. I love what Amok is trying to do here, make us more comfortable by providing a hammock format more conducive to laying on your side or even your stomach. Good for them. As an active BMT maintainer, you have to be able to obtain a good night's sleep prior to the next day's trail maintenance activity. Staying warm and dry is a vital prerequisite to that end. This makes me wonder if their provided tarp needs to be a little larger, as well. I enjoyed the video and look fwd to seeing more real cold weather experiences with Amok's hammocks.
I would throw my Exped 9 XL Downmat in it in colder weather. The amok is not really an extreme cold hammock. So far I have never gotten wet in the tarp and have sat out a few storms in it.
Thx for the FYI, Shuge, especially your notes on staying dry using their tarp from personal experience. Will have to ck out the Exped 9, for consideration on warmer sleeping. Always enjoy your videos. Sounds like Amok may be on to something here.
Hey Shug, thank you for another great video. Two questions for you if you would be so kind. 1. I saw the tarp stuff sack mentions storm doors. It looks like you just stake the tarp corners in to create the doors. How effective do you reckon those would be for blocking wind and do they make the interior too restrictive? 2. If you were to take it camping in winter, what do you think would be the best way to beef up the bottom insulation? Add a foam pad on the inside? Rig up an UQ on the outside? Thank you!
The tarp is for the Draumr and their gathered end hammock Segl...fits both. Storm door mode is more for Segl. But you can pull them in and down to sorta make a storm door on Draumr. I have never gotten wet in mine in a few big and wet storms.....ua-cam.com/video/ekn_PBsGB6c/v-deo.html As to insulation...you could add a closed cell pad on top of Amok pad or use a pad like Exped downmat 9 with a higher r-value rating.
Thank you very much. I know you are getting a ton of questions, so I want to say that I appreciate your time in responding. Good luck at your upcoming fair performances!

When they first produced it it only really fit folks 6 to 6'1". So taller fellers have been asking and they set forth.
You can slide a thin ccf foam pad under the Fjol. Or as I have done use an Exped Downmat XP 9. It fits with very little hammock flop.
@@shugemery great ideas, much appreciated!
It sure looks like it could use a larger tarp? I will be motorcycle camping and the extra weight is not big deal. What other tarp would work good with this hammock? Thanks for all your videos. May God Bless you and your family.
I have used my Superfly....ua-cam.com/video/gG-pg-6en1E/v-deo.html
@@shugemery Great that is just what I was thinking. I will have to pick one up. Thank you.
I am interested in that last no tree set up you did. Any chance of a video on that? Also, have you tried going to ground with the XL? I have attempted different ground setups with 2.0 and the bug net sat on my face so was curious if new features would address that.
I will be doing video on that stand fairly soon....www.tensaoutdoor.com/support/
Not set it up on ground yet but imagine with new bunet design it should be off the face.
Dang it Shug, you keep showing us all the neat hammoks, giving us all these great tips on using a hammok and you just might get me off the ground, maybe ;>) Thank You for a very informative review!!!
Whoooooo Buddy)))))
I've always been attracted to the obscure or not so main stream stuff when it comes to hammocks. And now that I've got a bridge to go with my GE's, maybe I'll give this a try one day too. I wonder if Amok , or someone else, will design an UQ of sorts to use it in even colder climes?
It is a pad dependent hammock. Better to use a pad with higher R-rating below 20º or so.
I am not sure they are planning a UQ.
But you for sure could mess with trying it.
It need the pad to hold it's shape.
Your pillow-system look interesting. Can you tell more about it ?

Gonna go off topic here and ask if you would consider a Linville Gorge vid on what trails you like and why ... Gonna be goin there soon enuf.
Love them all and have done them all. Very tough and rugged there. Easy first one is Conely Cove or Spence ridge.
Linville....ua-cam.com/play/PLahaAdtfX9ZKg-yWP1jm-lIoauJ4p6uNt.html
Have seen all your vids just haven't mapped out the Gorge much.
What a awesome rig"
Just think in a couple years whats gonna be developed.
Great video'
It may have a built in massage feature!
Wish I'd seen this before I bought my eno setup. This is competitive and innovative. Guess I'll have too buy it.
This is a whole different beast for sure!
Great review, Lord Shug! Setting up a Amok hammock is so easy a politician from Washington, DC could do it....or maybe not.... 8-D
They would never get to it because of all the meetings and red tape. But it is a pretty easy hang.
Fjøl means board, as in for instance cuttingboard. And draumr comes from draumrer witch means dreams in Norwegian.
Dream Board.....I like it.
Thank you for the great video, I just started looking into this hammocks.
Whoooooo Buddy))))
Looks like a nice hammock system. I see on their website that it will 400 lbs. Nice!
Thanks for the video
Yessir....
That is freaking awesome super cool looking hammock
It is kinda awesome.
Looks very nice. Great review Shug!
A fun and very different hammock.
Can I use different straps. Straps with other sewn in loops to hang gear I.e. keep your bag off the ground under the tarp. Just have to keep the buckle it looks like
I reckon but I have never tried. Go for it.
Hi Shug, I just received my new Amok UL and I am first timer to this product. It does come with some water drip on the suspension but I do wonder if you had any problems in that matter waking up to soaked quilt and gear?
Thanks👍
I have never had that happen in mine. Twist your straps....helps shed water.
ua-cam.com/video/ekn_PBsGB6c/v-deo.html
The deal on the hammock, tarp, and pad is pretty darn good. Under $300 for everything.
It really is a good deal.
AMOK is definitely my next hammock.
A fun addition to the hammock armada......
the Ø in fjøl is pronnounced almost like the i in bird. or the u in burn..depending on your dialect offcourse
Tusen takk!
Have you featured that four post hammock stand before?
Not a complete looky-see but just a couple of glimpses. ....www.tensaoutdoor.com/support/
If I hadn't just bought a Warbonnet Blackbird XLC I would be all over this. I certainly am one of those people who saw the sideways design of the original Amok Draumr and thought it was awesome and was then disappointed by the size limitation (6'6" over here). Maybe someday.
It is a whole different thing altogether.
Thank you, Shug. How's your shoulder?
I have been taking good care to not hurt it. Surgery Sept 5th...thankee!
shugemery Best of luck, my friend.
How'd it go? Shoulder feeling ok?
Too bad they don't offer a trade in on my 3.0. I just can't justify another shell out, like that. Love the foot box change, the bug net change and the suspension.
Not sure they ever mentioned offering a trade-in!
still not sure if you would use this or not or would you prefer your existing hammocks...and why?
It is totally different than my other hammocks. All comfortable for me. Just different. I like the chair mode...that is what makes it unique.
Shug, Please tell us more about hanging the Draumr on the Tensa 4! I was thinking during your demo of the Tensa 4 that it it would be a great combo with Draumr, exhibiting sounder geometry and solving potential pole "ride in" encounters.... 😎
Amok…yes. Go to the very end of this video…..ua-cam.com/video/IWdatsAnu7Q/v-deo.htmlm7s
With every video, you draw me closer to purchasing a hammock.
They are fun and I get good sleep in them.
that is the coolest hammock i would love to get one
i do enjoy mine a lot.
like ever other hammock water runs down the suspension system only way I've got around it was to hang another hammock under with my gear in a plastic bag in bottom hammock
Drip lines or a line break can cure that.
ua-cam.com/video/J1OXNc_JEPc/v-deo.html
I’m 6’8” and a side sleeper. This is nice.
Might be the thing. Yessir.
Shugemery Is there a way to insulate it more for winter camping in colder weather?
I put my Exped 9 downmat in mine...pad is rated to -30º
Fits well enough.
I'm only 6' tall so the Exped will work fine for me on the Amok XL.
@@shugemery Thankee Sir WHOOOOOOOOOOOO BUDDY
Wow Looks cool! My son might like this one. Checking the weight cap of 400 lbs he should fit it nicely being he is 6'3" 250ish. I don't worry about bears...I brought my own.
Good to own your own bear.....
so happy about this hammock. I emailed them a couple years ago requesting a taller one. I picked one up on pre order thanks for the info shug111
Whoooooo Buddy))))
Howdy, I am short (5'7) and I have used draumr3 for the past three years. I love this hammock!
I am super interested by all the updates (head room, and footbox) and I was wondering if you think going XL would be a worthy upgrade or if the improvements are only marginals?
Thanks for your amazing work (also, thanks because YOU helped me find the perfect lay in the draumr... I always had a caving under my knees and your advice on hammock forum to tighten up a bit the leg straps really made the Draumr my favorite hammock of all times :D
as long as you scoot back and center your hips under the hammock ridgeline. it will seem very roomy at your height.
I guess waiting for a draumr4.0 that includes those changes would be the wise thing to do... Need a 4.0 then :D
Great vid as usual. Any idea with the pad insulation what kind of low temps one could sleep in this system comfortably?
24ºF for the pad. 4ºC.
Would you suggest I use a top quilt or a full sleeping bag
Either or. Whatever you have. I always find a TQ easier to get into in a hammock myself.
I have never gotten wet in mine in a few big and wet storms.....ua-cam.com/video/ekn_PBsGB6c/v-deo.html
As to insulation...you could add a closed cell pad on top of Amok pad or use a pad like Exped downmat 9 with a higher r-value rating.
Thank you very much. I know you are getting a ton of questions, so I want to say that I appreciate your time in responding. Good luck at your upcoming fair performances!
Looks like a great set up. Very well thought out and built.
Thank you for sharing. :-)
Tall folks who have been kinda waiting should be pleased.
Will this hammock work with that new hammock stand that you are using in your backyard now?
Yes..I have had it on there.....flic.kr/p/MWJiby
How do you keep your sleeping bag or quilt off the ground when you get out of it??
I slip it under the straps in the hammock.
It does look nice for sure. Thanks.
It is really something different.
Not a run of the mill rig.
With the death of green bean, which hammock do you most often use in 3-season weather?
I switch around hammocks a lot. You'll see me using several over time in my trip videos. SoI use which ever one is grooving me at the time.
I love ur reviews, u go into so much more detail than other peoples reviews do 👌 What type of hammock wud u recommend for someone who can't sleep flat on their back due to chronic nerve pain in their back & has to use pillows so they are partially sat up to sleep? I use tents but wud love to try a hammock, just not sure wot to go for bcoz of my back issues & sleep position!! 🤔 thanks x
This is really good for stomach sleeping. Most hammocks are good for side sleeping but everyone differs.....Side sleeping video....ua-cam.com/video/7HTX4E23LQw/v-deo.html
Feeyawl is probably the pronunceration, think how fjord is spoken, likely the same I reckon 👍
Righto~
I’ve been thinking... you might have fun if you got a few different hammocks and packs and lines and hats, and just do some walking in the piney woods. Oh, wait...you already DO that!!! Shore is purdy!
Aye!
Great video as always Shug! Any need for an underquilt...and if so, how would you attach it?
No...it is designed around a pad for structure and insulation.
shugemery Excellent!!! I'm gonna pre-order a blue one and hand down my Blackbird XLC to my son! Thanks for all the hammock knowledge you impart on us!!!
