Why is XC2's image quality so poor?! If you have a large TV, and are at all picky about picture quality, you probably noticed that Xenoblade Chronicles 2 doesn't look so hot - even in docked mode.
The art style is gorgeous, but the resolution makes it hard to truly appreciate. Thanks to some web searching, I found a simple suggestion to fix the picture quality. Lo and behold, by making some changes to your system settings, you can dramatically improve sharpness and cut through that "cloud sea" of blur.

Thank you so much for this. It isn’t a massive difference, but anything that makes this game a step closer to looking as good as it deserves is a good thing in my eyes. The world is so beautiful. It deserves to be seen.
The resolution isn't anywhere near as sharp as the blade in my chest.
Wait a minute...

Excellent video - thanks RTS!
I noticed that the image also improved when I put the Switch on FULL RGB.
Only if your TV support it.
Fantastic tip! Well done again buddy.
Thanks for this! Can't wait to try it out!
Wish you had switched between 720 and 1080 several times in a row so I can see the difference. Just doing it one makes it really hard to see anything changing.
Keep making content, your channel will be big
2160p is 9 times 720p, not 3 ;)
Also any 4K TV with AI upscaling and a bit of sharpness increase can solve the issue entirely. Avoiding game mode of your TV is also recommended as it mess the picture.
Good point! I should have clarified that it's 3x the vertical and horizontal resolution (producing 9x the pixels). For gaming purposes, we're primarily concerned with it being an integer scale. Having an integer scale and "game mode" on will generally give you the lowest lag and the most accurate image, but (as you point out) the post processing of your TV can help to clean up the output if you leave game mode off. All about preferences :)
@@RetroTechSelect Yep. For having testing both modes on my Q60R, I use game mode for games that require ultra fast reactions (like Crash Bandicoot), and I disable it for the rest.
xenoblade chronicles x looked so much sharper
Imufur agreed.
It had no AA, that's why.
This game would have shined on any other console, but on the Switch it's just oogly
I’m curious if the same thing could be applied to the Wii U
Possible. The Wii U's scaling is pretty soft too, but Xenoblade Chronicles X looked a lot sharper than XC2 does out of the box.
Yes it does!! Most 1st party games run at 720p on Wii U (Super Mario 3D World, MK8, Xenoblade X, Wonderful 101, Donkey Kong TF, Star Fox Zero, Splatoon 1, Sonic Lost World, NSMBU, Pikmin 3) Excluding Smash 4 and the Zelda Remasters. which are native 1080p. Switching to 720p does the same effect and makes them look much sharper!
my display just complains that settings aren't optimal
Yeah, unfortunately mileage varies based on your display. Mine handles 720p as well as anything, but also doesn't complain when I throw weird stuff like 240p or 480i over HDMI at it. It's my capture card and receiver that like to throw fits over resolution and refresh rates.
Just wanted to let you know that if you hack/homebrew your Switch, there’s a graphics mod/setting at GBAtemp for Xenoblade you can use to remove the Awful antialiasing and sharpening. Also you can overclock it to reach 720p. It looks like a completely different game. Even the okay parts where people might not have a problem with look better.
Awesome info. I'll have to check it out!
I checked the GBAtemp post. It seems its only for portable mode. am I correct?
Alan Leong nope, both Portable and dock. Due note portable will not go past 460 unless it’s charging or docked.
Would this be pointless if you're using a 1080p monitor? Afaik they don't tend to upscale very well so wouldn't it look worse?
Sir Heller I've played this primarily on a 1080p projector and it definitely helps. It's not so much that the image itself doesn't scale well, but that the Switch does a poor job upscaling it. For most, letting your display do the legwork should provide some extra clarity.
What if you have the Switch set to Automatic resolution?
Craig Smith Automatic is going to detect your screen's resolution. If you're using a 1080p+ display, you'll still need to manually set 720p output for optimal results.
Retro Tech Select even when setting it to 780, seems to still look very blurry.
Im worried because ive seen people on youtube have almost perfect graphics during...lets say the moment u first walk into the town in Gormott, yet mine is blurry
Gormott is definitely a trouble area for the game. There's no helping the image when XC2 drops resolution dynamically below 720p... Luckily, it doesn't always happen in places like Torigoth - but there are triggers! Digital Foundry does a good job of breaking down what causes such performance woes in the game: ua-cam.com/video/MnyKDzX7lqo/v-deo.html I highly recommend a watch.
I notice the difference. But it’s just the super an i mean incredibly pixelated character models that bother me the most
I feel like Monolithsoft has been inching better and better with their titles (XC3 looks pretty good), but they still aren't were they could be. I was really hoping at least XC:DE was going to run 1080p natively.
Could you do the test for Torna DLC?
I'd really love to. The developers say they've employed an entirely new rendering system with Torna, so we may be in for some improvements!
I heard that there is improvement but 360p to 420p probably won't make unplayable to playable. haha. But if docked mode provides more stable resolution, or constant 720p instead of 500~720p, I don't mind connecting my switch to a larger screen although I prefer handheld mode ;)
The game looks like how I remember xenoblade looked on wii. great, for the console its on, but still bad. xenoblade x looks so much better
I tried this on my 4k Samsung and it made zero difference, shame it’s not on PS4 pro or pc.
Sad to hear it. This trick really depends on whether the scaler on your TV is sharper than the internal scaler in the Switch. IMO, there's zero reason the visuals haven't been patched on this game yet.
@@RetroTechSelect yes it’s too great a game to have these technical issues, they could have made it run at 1080p if they spent enough time and had more man power I’m sure of it.Either way I still love it and actually prefer everything about it over Xenoblade 1 which I have finished recently.I think it’s nostalgia that makes people say the first Is better but to me no way.
@@michaelpegasiou4531 Agreed. 900p like BotW at the very least.
I love this game but it has horrible graphics.
