Not to take away from Dev’s takes - because I enjoy hearing them; but Dev is the only person on UA-cam that I look forward to, listen to, upvote, and recommend just because of who he is. His passion for magic brings me back to my lunch break table games with elementary school friends and I so appreciate it
The ideal play pattern for "Walli" is turn 2 Ancient One, turn 3 Walli, turn 4 activate Ancient One's ability to loot and then mill cards equal to the MV of the discarded card. This is essentially 100% to turn on Descend 4, and has a decent shot to turn on Descend 8 if you're running 4x Phyrexian Fleshgorger and 4x Virtue of Persistence, both of which have early-game utility but a massive mana cost on a permanent. Discard one of those two cards and you are literally attacking with an 8/8 and a 7/7 trampler ON TURN 4. Then, even if those guys get Sunfall'd, you can still start deploying all of your 2-drop dudes like Lhurgoyfs and Cruel Somnophages and Souls of the Lost who are all going to be absolutely massive because of all the cards in your graveyard. (Yeah, yeah, Soul-Guide Lantern blah blah)
I love how you spent this entire spoiler season telling us how Equip 2 is too expensive, and then reveal that the Soulcleaver is your number 1 Sleeper! 😂
Had to leave the prerelease a bit early but Tinker's Tote helped me out. I played black white vampires. Tinker's Tote worked well to help Veto's Inquisitor, Bartolomé, Glorifier of Suffering, and Bitter Triumph. And I gained 3 life when I sacrificed. Hell yeah!
I just want you to know that an ad played right as you said "Let's get down to business, here in Ix-" and so in my head there is a *wait for it* before we came back from the ad break to "-alan." Accidental fire.
Hey dev, I have been taking an extended break from mtg arena. Just not worth the money to keep buying cards all the time. It was no longer exciting to pull cards, I found myself just auto opening cards and just looking online for deck lists. I personally feel overloaded by the new gimmicks in each set. No fun chasing the meta. But I just wanted to say I love mtg and love your channel. You are my rock in a turbulent sea. God bless. You are my portal to magic.
Haha, I listened to the rate every card and heard you say the art looks like Legends of the Hidden Temple... so when you showed in the presence I was like "Woe, that really does look exactly like Hidden Temple!"
I like the fact that we evaluate cards similarly. I haven’t played until recently since about 2007 and it’s crazy to see the design creep and call backs to stuff that was new and good back in the day.
I think that 2cc black artifact edict might be decent too. It's removal within the artifact theme that can contribute to crafting. It can be sac'd for certain draw spells and be brought back with serra paragon or cosmic rebirth, etc.
I want the tarrians soul leaver for my Kykar deck. I could +1/+1 for each token creature entering and exiting as a way of powering up my commander really really fast.
greedy freebooter is my #1 pick ... giving black this card right now seems completely busted and I think he ends up being the most impactful card in the set
Tbf, I haven't watched the spoilers for this set and was upset at first that the first card we saw on this list looked like "Legends of the Hidden Temple" 😅😂
Judge: Does Grim Captain not suffer summoning sickness because it was transformed and didn't leave the battlefield? It has the keyword Transformed but it also mentions Exiling in Crafting...
Grisly Salvage is still the best rate for that effect in Pioneer and is a staple of Greasefang decks in that format so I think salvage would still be great in standard!
Love being called a "Thunder Lizard", always great videos Dev. On another note, what is your take on this very very very long Standard. I ask because I'm so sick of playing against the same deck in Standard on Arena.
HOW DEV! HOW COULD YOU MAKE ME BRING THOSE MEMORIES BACK FROM ANCIENT HISTORY WITH NICKELODEON'S LOFHT?! Jesus christ Dev, we are SO old.... In an unrelated note: Awesome vid my man, when is the pokemon channel's rap intro coming? though
So the fact that we passed by not one, but two cards with Tarrian in the name and yet at no point did Dev brake out with a lil Kansas wailing "Tarrian my waywoed son......" makes me so concerned I'm thinkin about forming me a posse to go make sure thats actually you. The only problem is Im not up to date on my posse forming procedures and etiquette. I mean that is SOP for how one would handle this in Georgia im assuming as I really dont know cause I'm from OAKLAND! Still riding with you out here Dev one love my guy!!! [ But if you aint Dev we slidin bruh ....you know gang gang and all that shit ]. lol FADE
Regarding Throne of the Grim Captain - can you craft with a single changeling? It's a Dinosaur Merfolk Pirate Vampire (and everything else), or do you have to craft with four permanents?
As per the lessons learned with the Party mechanic from Zendikar, a Changeling can fill any of those roles, but just one. You need to exile four cards with this puppy.
The belligerent isn't just drawing a card and making a treasure, it's making a treasure and getting future sight until the end of your turn. I think people are really underestimating it.
That fact that you have to crew it and attack is the issue with it and most vehicles. Almost every vehicle that sees play either does something when not crewed, or is crewable for an alternative cost. Imo, the reason is because when you tap a three power creature to attack for 5, you are really only attacks for an extra 2 damage AND it’s only one body, therefore easier to block. That pay off has to be huge to be worth that sacrifice. Also, it bears mentioning that playing it on an empty board sucks butts.

Legends of the Hidden Temple! Core memory unlocked. Well played Purple parrot man.

I’m a red Jaguars, and I love your videos. I don’t play standard, but always like to listen to your takes on my drive to work.
The over the top "back in my day" was amazing!
I love how you spent this entire spoiler season telling us how Equip 2 is too expensive, and then reveal that the Soulcleaver is your number 1 Sleeper! 😂
Ghalta and Mavren would fit perfectly with the Throne
You need two differing instances
Edit: would be nice though
@@vze1ruuh so put 4 in your deck like I did!
Hell yeah!
BACK IN MY DAY 😂😂 Please never change Dev
There's no way?! First on a Dev video? Love the videos, these are always my favorite videos of spoiler season as well. Love all the coverage man.
You’re right you were second
Soulclever also giving the equipped creature vigilance is great
Spring Loaded Sawblades with that one Nahiri blink enchantment would be a fun combo
I just want you to know that an ad played right as you said "Let's get down to business, here in Ix-" and so in my head there is a *wait for it* before we came back from the ad break to "-alan."
Accidental fire.
I had Tarrian's Soulcleaver in my prerelease deck and it worked wonders! Especially in and/or against Descend decks!
Dev your a cool guy bro, I don’t even play magic anymore but I like to watch your videos while I’m on lunch break
12:44 I love that his name is like "AKA Wallie"
Coming out calling us Thunder Lizards! 😂 Dev for President! ❤
Signed in to UA-cam just to like the last 20 SBMTG videos. Love you buddy. Need more Tezzeret(lol)
Inti is my favourite sleeper. Absolute house. Made Knights playable (along with the Roaming Throne :D)
13:13 @RhysticStudies you're mentioned and the man is giving you gold here lol
Ooh, love the Belligerent for my Third Path Iconoclast deck.
I love you too! Also Hoppip is a fine pokemon he would get played in green as a mana dork or something.

That braided net can tie up a planeswalker if you want, since it prevents ability activations.
I like the fact that we evaluate cards similarly. I haven’t played until recently since about 2007 and it’s crazy to see the design creep and call backs to stuff that was new and good back in the day.
Dinosaurs look broken in this set but I’m most excited for pirates 🏴☠️
I’m loving all these cards too, so excited for this set!
Activate akawalli mid combat seems good
I think that 2cc black artifact edict might be decent too. It's removal within the artifact theme that can contribute to crafting. It can be sac'd for certain draw spells and be brought back with serra paragon or cosmic rebirth, etc.
I'm also into the spring loaded sawblade so I'll be there trying it as well lol.
You called it dowsing dagger. I totally saw that coming, lol
The first minute and a half i thought i was looking into the future at myself. I lost my composure for a minute.
What a neat handwriting dev has
Yoooo i'm stoked to be a thunder lizard. Also fun takes too.
the worried cat what a LOL
Stinker's Tote is the best joke yet
Dev, if you make "The Story of Lions Eye Diamond: A Diamond in the Rough". I'll be there. I love magic history.
Did Ixalan always have cat people? I feel like I would have remembered that.
another great video! Too bad UA-cam doesn't show enough ads...
Terrian's Soulcleaver can also be fetched with Urza's Saga in Modern. 😁
Great insight, these cards really are sleepers! 🃏👏
On point my friend
the Belligerent doesn't draw a card, it gives you fkn Future Sight - you can play as many of those cards as you want
Lmao the comment "Thinkers Tote" got me giggling good
Bars😂 that’s my favorite bit 🔥
Dowsing Device is for sure a good card, 100% agree.
I'm so glad I got to play aristocrats in my first prerelease I pulled two Vitos in my pool
commenting to provide interaction as a form of support
This set is going to blow up the meta.
Throne of the Grim Captain seems perfect for an aggro-control changeling deck
Regarding the cards that require 4 different creature types to craft, they'll be much easier to flip in Historic with Maskwood Nexus!!
I actually really like tinker's tote I played them in all my sealed pools this week
Braided Net just feels like a perfect piece for mono blue Cauldron tbh
Dev thinking his audiance wouldnt recognize Olmec on sight
Tbf, I haven't watched the spoilers for this set and was upset at first that the first card we saw on this list looked like "Legends of the Hidden Temple" 😅😂
Judge: Does Grim Captain not suffer summoning sickness because it was transformed and didn't leave the battlefield? It has the keyword Transformed but it also mentions Exiling in Crafting...
Just throwing this out there but I think vehicles are the coolest mechanic ever added to magic.
You my spirit animal dev
Grisly Salvage is still the best rate for that effect in Pioneer and is a staple of Greasefang decks in that format so I think salvage would still be great in standard!
Cool cards. Thanks!
Dowsing Device could go with a Naya Artifacts style deck with Kutzil/ Sovereign Okinec 😮
Dev just confirmed his fursona is a purple parrot
Soulcleaver is awesome!
Throne of the Grim Captain is this bomb you can drop for 2 mana, and then eventually activate for 4. Doesn't seem bad
I am playing Jund Anvil in standard atm but I might switch to Mardu Anvil. Number 2 is looking too sick to not try it 😀
Kutzil is going in my new Jetmir deck 😊
I built a land deck with all the new creature land cards and took advantage of The belligerent
Man so educated his books have their own couch.
Love being called a "Thunder Lizard", always great videos Dev. On another note, what is your take on this very very very long Standard. I ask because I'm so sick of playing against the same deck in Standard on Arena.
We really got a hoppip
Couch card of the day: JWittz would be thrilled.
HOW DEV! HOW COULD YOU MAKE ME BRING THOSE MEMORIES BACK FROM ANCIENT HISTORY WITH NICKELODEON'S LOFHT?!
Jesus christ Dev, we are SO old....
In an unrelated note: Awesome vid my man, when is the pokemon channel's rap intro coming? though
they should errata throne of the grim captain to allow it to be a commander.
Can the grim captain attack the turn it was crafted?
You have great handwriting!
Isnt ghalta and mavin or whatever a vampire dinosaur?
So the fact that we passed by not one, but two cards with Tarrian in the name and yet at no point did Dev brake out with a lil Kansas wailing "Tarrian my waywoed son......" makes me so concerned I'm thinkin about forming me a posse to go make sure thats actually you. Grixis artifacts?! I'm in.
not me pocketing the theme song for the ample time to annoy my husband 🤷♀
With the belligerent, do you have to attack in order to look at top card of library etc? Or that happens anytime during your turn?
Teferi comparison for Kutzil is off base imo, T3 would bounce a threat and draw a card. The timing restriction was only gravy on top
"Thunder lizards"
That couch is all messed up!
So descend is just variable threshold?
Pretty much but relies on permanent only instead of all cards.
Does the throne require all 4 csrd types to flip? Or just 1 and some lands?
All 4 of the creature types
I made grim captain today in draft on turn 5 and my opponent was visibly disturbed.
How is a grand abolisher that draws cards a bad card? It might straight up hose a lot of flash and control strategies.
This set went very light on the tribal theme ixalan had last time, and I hate it. I wanted a new Kumena
I thought you started with "What up fucking losers". Shit was so funny
Regarding Throne of the Grim Captain - can you craft with a single changeling? It's a Dinosaur Merfolk Pirate Vampire (and everything else), or do you have to craft with four permanents?

Your not crazy, even as a commander player I thought those saw blades looked legit. 5dmg is huge
Love you too
Purple Parrots take flight! Cawwwwwww

Was tginking about it and this is strictly better mtg than most other channels. Just a thot. 😮😅
Waddup Dev
Kutzil + Bedrock Turtle
don't cite the legends of the hidden temple to me, i was there when they were written
