Millions of years ago, at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, the earth gave birth to a very rare blue-mauve stone: the precious Tanzanite.
At this unique site, this gem is extracted in extremely precarious and primitive conditions.
This film will take you on an adventure into the bowels of the earth with the miners who go down these endless tunnels. These serpentine labyrinths wind their way in graphite over several kilometres. Some miners stay their 18 hours at a stretch, enduring temperatures of nearly 50°C.
The gems found are collected by the proprietor of the mine and it is the Massais who go there to buy them. They have the monopoly of the tanzanite trade between the mines and the counters of Arusha where they re-sell them.
After cutting and improving some of these stones, a handful of foreigners who have settled in this town sell and export them to major commercial destinations like the United States, Europe, India and other Asian countries. In this film you will follow every stage of their journey.
Today, the exploitation of tanzanite accounts for the wealth of Arusha; Massais have even constructed buildings with their profits. Some of them, in high spirits, throw wads of notes from the top of their buildings to celebrate their success.
Soon after its discovery in 1968, the New York jeweler Tiffany began commercializing this gem world-wide, till it ranked as the second most sold blue stone in the United States after the sapphire.
You will discover Tiffany’s creations made with this fascinating stone - the tanzanite.
Seeing the hardships to get tanzanite. I will treasure my tanzanite pendant even more. Thank you 🇹🇿

I’m sure you wear made in China clothes. Do you know how those are made? Or all the products made overseas. So are you going to walk naked?

Tanzanite, Lapis Lazuli and blue sodalite.
Very long, informative, and now I have a new found love for the poor people risking their lives for this stone. When you see it all over eBay and Etsy...you know you're buying junk. Thank you for this wake-up video.
ThTs hectic
You must buy them. Otherwise the miners will starve.
I purchased a ring, it was willed to a friend of mine. It’s 18k gold, surrounded by two roses, seven small diamonds, and a stunning stone, sky blue by day, lavender at evening. It’s beautiful beyond words.
Sorry for writing you, just out of curiosity your page come up on my suggested friend lists so I was just wondering if I knew you from somewhere??
MIGHT BE AN "ALEJANDRITA". IF SO, WOW!
A big thank you to the one I'll never meet for the Tanzanite I'm currently wearing. 💜🕊💙🌿💜
Thanks very much for the hi quality video, i have new respect for tanzanie gems after seeing what it takes to find these gems.
This is a very awesome educational video , it would be nice if a small % of tax was set aside to help poor miners around the mine community to get food , medical & educational assistance .
Ya how about the state collect the taxes and then use those said taxes for the purposes that they were intended for. That never happens anywhere in the world taxes are collected for one thing and used for something else because it was deemed more important and maybe it is, maybe not. But I guarantee that part of the people won't be happy and the other will be.
They were not paying Taxes until 2015 when a new president come in.

Watching the way they treat each other. Man is so cruel to each other. Heart breaking.
I could say so much to get myself banned by the liberals running YT by responding to this comment. Sad, yes, but research the mentality and cognitive abilities of these people. Not politically correct, but truth.
@@benjaminrapp7418 you guys know nothing about TANZANIA
This are Masai people
A tribe that lives in Eastern Africa Kenya. They're very matured and hard working people's they also love and respect each other. Dont let the way they dressed n looks fool you. You got give a big respect to people's like Masai. Why do u think a lot of suicide and others weird things happening in western countries while they have everything they need?? It's because there no happiness in their lives Simple is that!! Africa is reach with a lot of things
Nothing wrong with it. That's how u do on business like this
@@MoeMoe-jn1dd In fact, the Masai don't toil in the mines, they buy from the miners and sell to the gemstone traders. The ones that toil in the mines are not Masai, from what I understood from the video. They're business savvy prople, they invest in livestock etc.
Look who is wearing the jury and look how much work the miners did. Life isn't fair.
Very tough working conditions but this is a very beautiful gemstone.
Tough working conditions? Willing workers are treated there worst than anymals. Sad "humanity" ! Those stones brings misery, hate and dead.
Great documentary. Now when I wear my tanzanite, I think of that young 27 year old who hopes luck will smile on him. I hope it does. The gem trade seems glamorous but it is not. Blood, sweat and tears, hopes dreams and wishes are in every gem. The mighty Maasai, the hopeful miner, the children that are fed from every stone brought forth. I think of them all, I pray for them all. My tanzanite is only small, but I hope it benefited that actual hands that brought it from darkness in the earth up into the sunshine or perhaps the great life-giving rains. It is truly a symbol of that great circle of life.
🙏🙏
You seem a good hearted person !
May God bless you
@QRW Sec I am torn. They get paid so little, it's crappy merchandise and not made in America, supporting Americans. Its a tough call, for America, for poor people, for human rights. I prefer made in America, but certain things, like gems, only come from certain locations. I would like to see "made in China" mean better wages so they can live without poverty, I would like to see better quality craftsmanship which better wages and humane treatment can help with. I would like to think they are doing something we cannot manufacture here in the US. As it is, those jobs in China feed people who otherwise could not find work. It seems that there are a multitude of things made in China. The designer knockoffs are something I will not purchase, that is just plain wrong. There is so much wrong in this world, which makes this (knockoffs) seem like a small problem at this moment.
@@nuruworldinsight2957 thank you! 🙏😊

Wow. Awesome video. I have a beautiful Tanzanite necklace and earrings (very tiny but you can see the violet blue, and sometimes a touch of reddish colour in one of the stones) with a little diamond with each Tanzanite, that I got for my birthday years ago by a dear friend. He asked me what I wanted for my birthday, and I had read up on Tanzanite that its metaphysical properties are to help expand the heart/crown energy systems in order to help one better open to spiritual evolvement. They are so beautiful. It was such a pleasure seeing this video. Thank you!

These are truly marvellous documentaries, so informative and thought provoking. One minute I’m admiring the spectacular landscape of Tanzania, then gloating over the luxurious intensity of the stones themselves, then squirming with guilt and horror at the appalling danger of the miners’ working conditions. Poor guys, putting their lives at such terrible risk just so a lady can wear a pretty ring. I’d like to give all those guys enough money so they can retire. Tanzanites are undeniably glorious, gorgeous stones, but now I think, so what if it’s only an iolite or piece of blue glass? It looks just as pretty, and doesn’t have the blood-guilt attached.
The real question is what makes these men willing to pursue these kinds of jobs? What else is going wrong with their economy.?
I know those guys and am staying near the mining sites
True
We in Mererani consider this our business. No kid is allowed to work in the mines. This shown here is mostly a poorly conducted and small capital site. This is completely voluntary work. Most of the guys who work there are looking for a lot of money at once. They do get money and make their lives. These mines are dream jobs for these guys because there are many role models who have gotten rich through the same hustle road. Among these small mines sites there are other mine sites that are well equipped with large capital and their work conditions are more advanced. Now If you care about these guys you need to buy Tanzanite at Its true price or pay more for these unique stones so these guys can also get good prices when negotiate with their buyers. Also this documentary is done around 20 years ago there are improvements across board. Also youths have better jobs in Tanzania these days, there are more choices for young people. However, you can still find lots of young people going for Tanzanite hoping to become rich straight away.
@@HASASON can you tell me the location of the 12sq kilometers 🙏

15:58 I love how the narrator is translating English to English
and she doesn't even copy what they say verbatim. I have never seen that in my life. O.o

I really enjoy these documentaries!! As a studying gemologist they are so interesting and only serve to fuel the fire of adventure and to travel the world in search of gems
Oh thats right bud thats right
This is a VERY OLD movie. I know, because I lived there and have friends that can still get into the mines. Tanzania 🇹🇿 has now build a cement WALL around the mine areas.
nice
2003 as far as the document signed was concerned.
I wonder if the mines are still producing quality stones.
@@StraitClownin909 Yes..there are still very quality stones.I come from Kenya and sell them.having big AAA pieces
You are very true....Ronda I'm Tanzanian born and raised here where we excrat Tanzanite...the area is now built under the government the cement wall all over so as to collect taxes effectively from Tanzanite minerals and resentlly we have got the the stone of 9kg and other of 5kg belongs from small miners
Tanzanite is beautiful.
Tanzanite is the pride of Tanzania.

Just this June, 2020 a record discovery of large germ stone of Tanzanite has been found in the Mererani, Tanzania. There were two, weigh 9 kg and 5 kg respectively with a total value of 7.8 billion tanzania shilling.
Fredrick Willirk read about that. Sold for > $3 million USD, in my local currency. Makes me happy for this community. They deserve to profit from the resources of their land.

this documentary deserves a million like. i love gems.
Aim sorry to break your bubble, for your pleasure kids and thier parents dey because they get lung cancer or Dust lungs. As you could have see in this video, the worker's dont wear mouth masks to protect thier lung from the dust in the mines. Child labour is very common in these mines! Most children who work in these mines dey before they reach the age of 13. Its really sad how the parents push thier kids to work in the mines. For what? A blue collor stone. You see blue, I see a red color,,,,,, of blood!
@@ChemistryAmsterdam it so sad.maybe parents dont know the dangers or are desperate to eat. Either wsy, sadness.

Very informative documentary this package is. Well researched, well presented, visuals are greatest quality as well.
This is very old footage. The change that happened since then makes this video misinformation and an outright lie

Why do I get a sick feeling when these honest, hard working people trade their beautiful crystals for a little pile of printed paper? This world is not honest, at least not in most in places. How honesty got to be such a foreign concept, is beyond me. These Massi value honesty, it is most hopful.
In my late teens I wanted a diamond cut tanzanite earring set in white gold. Maybe one day I'll treat myself.
Not worth the price,,well the diamond yes,,but tanzanite is an over marketed cheap very soft stone that comes out of the ground orange and brown,,and it heat treated to turn blue. BTW,,the heat treatment weakens the stone even more. Its all propaganda,,to get the seller to pay mast amounts of money for junk.
@@cherylsmith4102 Not all tanzanite is brown when extracted, some of the stones are blue. How can you call it junk when it is only found in one location on earth and if in fact going up in value quite rapidly?
Thank u for ur videos to listen and learn I love it extremely thank again..

Oi
So beautiful video i hope I have this precious stone someday love it
Wonderfull...!
Oh my good lord, who could wear Tanzanite without guilt, after seeing this.
Why guilt? they would have nothing without purchasers of Tanzanite. I have heard this a million times, saying that some countries or people are being exploited without the consideration to the thought that, that particular employment bis what is allowing them to be alive. Just a few decades ago, everybody lived this way, they will catch up in time, till then wish them good luck. Selective outrage won't help anyone.
@@samuelpjc yes, I discussed this with my granddaughter, exactly as you say, but it doesn’t make it any easier, to see. So many people taking their cut. No safety measures. Rich men getting richer, and the men risking their lives just to exist. I’m sorry, but it’s heartbreaking to me.
@@cazrelda169 agree, it's absolutely heart breaking, but it's not like they have too many options. The middlemen are also the ones that stabilise the otherwise guerilla life. It's definitely very sad and i have wondered why they live in small thatched houses instead of large self built house. I built myself one when I had zero experience. Then I realised they probably can't afford the time, in short they wud be willing to do anything to feed themselves and their loved ones, right now this is their only choice. Just like putting a juvenile in prison for a mistake will only harden the criminal roots, there shud be a better way of rehabilitation.
They just get pay 7 dollar to finding millions dollar stone.... Amazing life!!!

Such a sad stories make me want to own this stone to appreciate work of people into it and cherish it

the local miners were not paid as much as the brokers were paid. fair trade should be practiced. truly a blood tanzanite. owners should value the stone not based on the money but the life, sweat, blood and time spent on it to be available on your ring.
If that was the case they would have nothing for the stones because no one would pay what YOU think their time is worth.
You obviously don't care what they think of themselves.
Love your movies
Gostei apaixonei pela tanzanita!!!
The thing that gets me the most is the narrator telling us what a guy who is clearly speaking English is saying… just let us listen to the fucking conversation
Very impressive video, Thank you for the effort of making this video
Thank you video Malaya Hayah. Mersi
A lot of Tanzanite is heat treated to enhance the blue colour of the stone. One has to be careful when buying gemstones...
Many gems are heated to enhance
color.
I really enjoy watching your gemstone videos I think I’ve watched just about everyone I only have one complaint. Most people in the video speak in English yet the woman is still repeating what they say talking over them sometimes I find that rather annoying or intrusive into my immersion of this video. Other than that really awesome videos really detailed just seeing how these rocks that we take for granted in our necklaces and rings the effort that goes into removing them from earth with these kids and adults. It’s just unreal conditions. Thanks for your efforts in making these 👍
