I was driving a truck north from NC to Cleveland, had just crossed into Virginia, just south of WV. The only radio station I could get was a blue grass station from a small town west of me. Sara was live in the studio that day performing this song. Still the most memorable 'radio' moment of my life, wishing this song would go on forever. Got to see her live in WV about a year later.
Gotta love all the Hartford flourishes she puts in this song. Vocally, and with the bow! And the steady steps... I hope everyone has heard her work in 'I'm with Her'. Huge talents at work!
Wow so I’m late to the party lol I’m here because of the movie The Peanut Butter Falcon. Awesome movie!!!! I love the music in the movie. Than when I come on here for the songs, I get the chills everywhere. To look back on the history of the music like Ola Bella Reed for instance another song in the movie, is such an incredible feeling. Even though I wasn’t raised in that era, I wish I was. So many incredible, talented artists and musicians were. I look at today’s music and think about how music is just not the same meaningful experience. Today’s music is about drugs and sex (that’s saying it in a nice way) who’s F_ _ king who, who’s dating who, and I personally prefer back then music. The meaning, the voices, the way they played their choice of instruments OMG sends me right to my feet dancing. Gets my one foot tapping and can’t sit still. Definitely back then music lol
Having worked on the Illinois River (1976-7 probably a couple years after John Hartford), I got very nostalgic when I heard this song on the radio last week. Sara's handling of this material is personal and genuine and evocative of life on the river and I love to hear this.
Seems like I heard this song live on the radio about 2009, driving through western Virginia. I only had the station for about 10 minutes. One of the luckiest moments of my life.
What a truly talented young lady! I can't wait to see her in person here in Rancho Bernardo on July 4th. Never have been a fan of this genre, but now I'm giving it another look with newfound appreciation for American rooted music. Wow, just Wow!!
Wow! I just figured out where I will be tomorrow at 12:10 in the PM. Porch Stage, Hardly Strictly Bluegrass, San Francisco. Can't wait to see her live.
Just get carried away ! stamp your feet on the wooden floor..." on a long summer day"! we sang it along with her and many more people in Badalona....Vibrant, alive...great!
How can there be ANY Dislikes here? Obviously, the Dislikers don’t understand how Music works. (There had to have been even more hostility cast toward the studio version, cuz the comments there are Turned Off.) Sweetest voice, monstrous fiddle, and a lyric that’s carved outta callouses. Rock on, Sara!
John Hartford was......IS The MAN!! And Sara definately is one hell of a woman. The best rendition of this song that wasn't by John himself, by far. Oh, to be able to wake up and have coffee with that woman...........Hmmmm.
@Mwolfgang88 Pffttt!.... Yeah I don't think I could handle it with her glasses on. I can only tolerate so much hotness... glasses would put me over the edge and I'd have to go smack somebody's mom.
I'm here because of The Peanut Butter Falcon. Who's with me?
I am too. Just watched it. Amazing movie.
I had to search for this after the movie!😆
Great film, great track!
John Hartman is the best! PBF very good movie too...
Yep. I've been checking out ALL the music from the movie. Amazing stuff!

somewhere John Hartford is smiling down and thinking, "...I think I wrote this one for this lady...she can actually get those high notes..."
Her voice totally sounds like her violin- natural, raw, expressive. She uses it as an instrument. Wow!
Gotta love all the Hartford flourishes she puts in this song. Vocally, and with the bow! And the steady steps...

Jon Doe you should hear this on good cans like my Masters & Dynamics ; stunning !! 🤙🏽👏🏼👏🏼
The Peanut Butter Falcon is entertaining, touching and goofy. This song is reminiscent of the bluegrass vocals in Oh Brother Where Art Thou.

Damn, but she looks good in red. And her musicianship is so honest and organic, too. There's seriously nothing to dislike about her.

Hard to go wrong with Sara Watkins playing the late, Great John Hartford.
Solid 'A'!

A real singer...a real woman...a real musician! She'll never hit the big time with all that going for her.
The breath taking result of a dedicated musician practicing and perfecting their music.
Beautifully simplified. Love it…keep killing it!

John Hartford wrote this song and released it on his Grammy-winning (for Best Traditional Folk Recording) 1976 album “Mark Twang”.
I really wanted her to close it out with more fiddle!
what tuning is she using here? anyone know?
I'm pretty sure its just standard.
thanks...
Nice Fiddle and better looking than Capt. John Hartford!
Keep your foot from tapping. I f*cking dare you.
