- The tumultuous summer of 1967 begged three questions: What happened? Why did it happen? And what could be done to prevent it from happening again?
Learn about the commission that LBJ created-and ultimately rejected-to answer these questions in this extended preview of THE RIOT REPORT.
THE RIOT REPORT premieres Tue May 21 at 9/8c on @PBS and the free PBS App.

When Black neighborhoods in scores of cities erupted in violence during the summer of 1967, President Lyndon Johnson appointed the National Advisory Commission on Civil Disorders--informally known as the Kerner Commission--to answer three questions: What happened? Why did it happen? And what could be done to prevent it from happening again? The bi-partisan commission’s final report, issued in March of 1968, would offer a shockingly unvarnished assessment of American race relations--a verdict so politically explosive that Johnson not only refused to acknowledge it publicly, but even to thank the commissioners for their service. THE RIOT REPORT explores this pivotal moment in the nation’s history and the fraught social dynamics that simultaneously spurred the commission’s investigation and doomed its findings to political oblivion.

The US was very racist through the 1950s and people were sick of it.
Excellent film! If only we had NOT BEEN IN VIETNAM but, instead, accepted and implemented SYSTEMIC change, we would be a nation united today.
I know the comments will be racially neutral and ...interesting.
Interestingly, there were white-on-Black riots at this time, but even them people just tried to deliberately forget about them. There were also riots in Mexican American and Puerto Rican communities as well.
Took me a minute to realize Sears didn't do anything.
Fantastic! Editing, still animation, typography, research. And most of all the subject matter. Honest and compelling, while exposing what is all-too-relevant content for America right now. This is one of the best American Experience Films I’ve seen in a long time!
Wait a minute - I thought the summer of 1967 was the "Summer of Love"?
Why is this one released in chapters and not as a total episode?
Can't read, huh? They say right in the description, it's a frickin' preview, the episode hasn't even aired yet. Jesus Christ, is everyone this much of a moron these days? It's because it's a big conspiracy, Boatright, they just want to show you one chapter and nothing else. 🤣
This is an extended preview - the full episode airs Tuesday, May 21st!
I would vote for Fred Harris today or any day. The New Populism relevant in 2024.
I have just watched this sad report. My East TN PBS affiliate chose to air American Experience at 3:00 a.m. EDT. I hope PBS will make reruns of it frequent and provide a full free UA-cam of it to reach more people. The militarization of the police that started in 1965 is even more dangerous today, as witnessed with the "riot police" storming peaceful, unarmed protesters on university campuses.
Thanks for watching! THE RIOT REPORT will be free to stream on our website and the PBS app through June 21st! www.pbs.org/video/the-riot-report-cuh1ik/

Why is this split up into parts?
This is an extended preview of THE RIOT REPORT -- the full film is currently available to watch online and in the PBS App with Passport! www.pbs.org/wgbh/americanexperience/films/riot-report

Wonder if this was asroturfed in order to get the lawfare they wanted to inflict? Just like they do now.
The fact is, when marginalized groups riot, they drive the people they need help from to move far, far away.
Riots in America about America are not the same as riots about Palestine, but PBS will try this gambit anyway.
Spoilers from the trailer and history: the report determined the riots were based on justified concerns about racism and to stop them those concerns had to be met.
Oh yeah, they just threw this episode together because of Palestine, LMFAO. Not lighting the world on fire with the pea-brain of yours, huh Billy Boy? 🤣
The video doesn't mention Palestinian activists. You commented on an entirely unrelated topic.
Systemic oppression and genocide are both wrong, but nice bait.
Baiting for what? This is history everyone should know.
