- 3 Quick Ways to Make Bar Chords Easier
Struggling with bar chords? Don't fret! In this video, we're going to share three game-changing tips to make bar chords a breeze. Whether you're a beginner or just need a refresher, these strategies will unlock your guitar potential.
Tip #1: Capo Magic
The quickest path to bar chord success is using a capo. Position it around the fifth fret (or to your preference), and watch the strings magically become more manageable. It's like training wheels - you'll feel the difference and gain confidence. Eventually, you won't need it anymore.
Tip #2: Perfect Your Fingering
Proper finger placement is crucial, especially for bar chords. Learn the right techniques - playing on your fingertips and close to the frets. If you need a comprehensive guide, check out my free course and the link below for a detailed PDF.
Tip #3: Break It Down
Don't be discouraged if you can't nail a full bar chord immediately. No one does. Break it down into manageable parts using the "inventory method." Start with two strings, then add more as you progress. It's like juggling - master two balls before attempting three!
With these three tips and a bit of practice, you'll conquer bar chords and play your favorite songs flawlessly. So, grab your guitar, follow this advice, and let's rock those bar chords together! 🤘🎶

I only started learning how to play the guitar 6 weeks ago & I'm documenting my entire learning journey on here so this was super motivational! I haven't made it to bar chords yet of course as it's too soon for me... still struggling with the basic open chords I know... but I have this video saved & will revisit when the time arrives!

Simple barre chords is where I started . Simple tunes by Sex pistols anarchic in the Uk , Teenage kicks by undertones.
So many tunes to get you off the ground .
@@yourguitarsage Brill thanks a lot!
@@3521rob I'll give it a good dabble & see how it goes! At the moment my fingers are looking at me gone off even when I form a basic D chord 😂
My Friends! Thanks so much for checking out my video. Let me know in the comments if these tips helped you with bar chords!
This one was took a lot of patience. The way i got it i imagined my index finger was hurt and not usable. I started making a E cord with fingers 2 3 & 4 that got easier. Then move one frett and start to barr with index finger. It took weeks. If i got frustrated i just practice something different for a while then try agian. A good teacher named the sage and a well setup electric helped me a lot.
Love it! Thank you, Michael.
I’m getting those barr chords but LOVE the capo. Especially, for singing in different keys. Thanks Erich. 🙏❤️🎸🎵
Very welcome!💪👍
Very good advice! Breaking it down and practicing. How do you eat an elephant, one bite at a time, or in this case, one or two notes at a time. Also, I find getting your guitar properly set up and using the right strings will help a lot as well.
Exactly!👍💪
Thanks very much
Glad you liked it! 🙏
tbh i forgot about the capo. thank you for reminding me incidentally! ☺
I'm sure i could buy one at a music/guitar shop, but is it also selling on Amazon? anyone know? Also, what is a decent price for a Capo?
I've been playing guitar for 30+ years and have never been able to properly make and hold a bar chord. I tried many times over the years. About 5 months ago I developed arthritis in my pointer finger that mimics trigger finger, and for whatever reason, I can now make, hold, and have it ring clear. It was instant. One day I couldn't, the next day I could. Crazy, but true.
Is your guitar set up properly?
They are. No buzzing or dead spots. Takes very little pressure to fret. Even my wife, who has small, weaker hands can make a couple chords ring out on my 2 acoustics when she manages the finger positions.
My index finger struggles to depress the third string, even when rotated. Is there a fretboard radius that's more helpful for barr chords?
BARRE 💥👌
Hey Erich. I have a problem with only the F chord on the 1st fret. I bring the headstock closer to my body. Ithink it's something to do with how my wrist twist. Thank you
These will help, my friend.
Barre Chords are not hard to form for me, the grip is down by now. But one of my acoustics it is near impossible to get a clear major F barre chord. It is impossible, the strings and the nut just don't give. I have resorted to an inverted F major. And Taylor support says that to go lighter on strings would need a setup. The strings are Elixir phosphor bronze with nano Coating, light gauge .012-.053. And they still have no give on the F major.
If the action is generally ok (no problem to play barre chords up the neck only difficulty at 1st fret), the nut slots may need to be filed down a little bit and the guitar shop should be able to do that in 5 minutes.
That beard rocks.
