  • This is a cab view of the Hakone Tozan Railway, which connects Odawara Station and Gora Station for 15.0km. This video covers the area from Hakone Yumoto Station to Goura Station.
TOZAN means mountain climbing. This line is one of Japan's most famous mountain lines, with a steep slope starting from Hakone-Yumoto Station at an altitude of 96 meters, and the final station, Goura Station, at an altitude of 541 meters. The steepest slope is 80‰ (0.8%), which is the steepest in Japan, with the exception of the Abt type railway on the Oigawa Railway in Shizuoka Prefecture.
The starting point, Hakone Yumoto Station, is a tourist destination with hot springs. Odakyu Electric Railway's limited express also runs to this station, and this train's final stop is Hakone Yumoto Station. Turn around to the east, in the opposite direction to the Hakone Tozan Railway.
There are many other hot springs along the Hakone Tozan Railway, which are visited by tourists from all over the world all year round. It is a tourist destination that represents Japan.
The train climbs slowly at a speed of 20km/h on a route with a maximum curve of 80‰ and a minimum curve radius of 30m. This line has a sister relationship with Switzerland's Rhaetian Bahn, and there are signs erected here and there to indicate this fact.
The Hakone Tozan Railway tracks continue into the mountains. Japan's mountains are covered with plants, so you can't see the sheer cliffs from the front view, but here and there you can see a series of mountains on the other side of deep valleys.
This route has three switchbacks along the way. I took pictures of two trains and combined them into one as the train changed direction and continued running. Scenes where the faces of the driver and passengers are shown due to reflections of light, such as in tunnels, were omitted. Please be aware of this.
The last thing to appear is a freight train. They are dispatched when construction work is carried out at night.

Thank you for your comment. your suggestion is great. Before the railroad was built, Hakone was considered a mysterious place. That was about 200 years ago. Even now, on rainy days, there are fewer tourists in Hakone, giving it a different, quiet atmosphere.

I enjoyed the train ride on this line. The view was spectacular as the train winds his way through the mountains that are surrounded by thick vegetation. People living and working in that part of Japan don't have to worry about breathing pollutants in the air. Thank you for this production as well as all your hard work.

Indeed, the air in Hakone is delicious. 😀
And it's a little cold in the mornings and evenings. When we go by car, we feel cold when we get out of the car.
There is no such gap when traveling by train. We are approaching the mountain little by little.

This railway would make an excellent prototype for a model railway: short, colourful trains, tight curves, steep gradients, lots of bridges and tunnels, and small stations (sometimes all of the above in one spot).

Layouts based on this route have been published several times in Japanese railway model magazines. However, switchbacks are difficult to operate because they disturb continuous operation. Another issue seems to be that if we try to incorporate a switchback into an endless loop, a reverse loop will occur somewhere, making operation difficult with a DC 2-wire model.s you pointed out, small cars lend themselves to compact layout.

Very interesting to see: a standard-gauge mountain route (1435 mm) with hairpin bends... 👍😊 Such routes also existed or exist in Germany, but unfortunately not in my home region.
Identical to the Enoshima-Dentetsu line, for example, are the switches that are not set by a signal box but can be driven by the train - and it is probably common for tourist trains to have an English-language announcement inside the train in addition to Japanese.
It's nice that you cut two different journeys together when changing the direction of travel in the hairpin bends - because personally I don't like backwards journeys and instead always sit in the direction of travel on the train if possible 😊
Thank you for taking us on this journey via video and best regards 🖖

    • @14ikesan12

The difficult problem for me was how to express the three switchbacks on this railway in a video. Of course, there are steep inclines before and after the switchbacks. Simply linking images of the direction of travel may not convey the fun of switchbacks. That's why I chose it.
There is no backward-looking video for the third switchback. Will everyone understand the situation now? and. It's just a bit of negligence on my part.

Single track mountain railroading at it's best! A shelf cut into the mountain side. Out of one tunnel and into another. Across bridges and fills. Slide fences. Wheels squealing on tight curves. Oh my heavens, switchbacks! Did I miss anything? Oh, yes. Stations between tunnels. And passing sidings. Beautiful mountain scenery with splashes of white, pink and red scattered among the greenery. Rolling through neat villages. Glimpses of a beautiful sky. Oh! Did I see a waterfall? This is a downright amazing ride! Thanks for sharing it!

The first stop, Tonosawa Station, is sandwiched between tunnels. When this railroad increased the number of train cars from two to three, the tunnel was re-digged wider and a turnout was relocated inside the tunnel. Until then, this station was only long enough for a two-car train.
After the train departs, the only sound we hear on this station platform is the sound of water running somewhere.

Thank you for your comment. Japan's railways use 1,435 mm gauge, which is the international standard, and 1,067 mm gauge, which has lower transport capacity. Before railways were built in Japan, British Minister Harry Parkes asked Shigenobu Okuma, an influential politician of the time, "Which gauge would you choose for Japan's railways?" said that he answered, ``Japan is a small country, so 1067mm would be fine.'' Okuma says he regretted that choice, but as a result, many Japanese railways adopted 1067mm gauge.

Your point is accurate. It uses both electric and pneumatic brakes. In addition, a mechanical brake is equipped for emergencies. The latest model 3000 (which I also rode this time) is also equipped with a regenerative braking system.
Although this was not taken by me, there is also a video posted showing how to use the brakes properly.
      ua-cam.com/video/tU5nZKmV4mI/v-deo.html
Cast iron is still used in the brake shoes of this railroad. Resin brake shoes have become mainstream in recent years, but this railroad does not use resin brake shoes because they make the tire surface slippery.

The area where the train is approaching at 23 minutes 40 seconds is the site of a large-scale collapse. Of course, this location was not the only one that suffered damage, but the railroad company chose to restore it. I think this is what tradition is all about.
