This was disputed. It was instead a challange of sorts by Eduard Khil’s father Anatolij Vasiljevich Khil, who at the time had a dispute with a poet Lev Oshanin, whether it is possible to compose a song without any lyrics. Khil wasn’t even a first singer to vocalize this song, there were guys like jako Muslim Magomajev, Valerij Obodzinskij or hungarian János Koós.

The 1976 rendition is oddly dystopic and nightmarish. I envision him singing to and looking at an empty soundstage pretending there's an audience there.

I'm pretty sure the 2010 performance was lip-synced to the 1976 recording.
Cant complain really Edvuard is really getting on in years.

Tbh it’s a huge disappointment, but he was pretty old at the time, so I feel considerate about his health if he were to pull off his magical singing at such a fragile age.

Well the 1976 version was lipsynced as well.

The story is that he wanted to sing the actual words to this Western song, but the Soviet bigwigs thought the lyrics were subversive. So he ended up singing the song without the words! The rest is history.
