Eduard was caught up in the fighting in Smolensk as a little boy in 1941 and he got separated from his mother during the panic of the evacuation. He went to a orphanage in Penza where many of the children there died from cold and malnutrition. However even though he was only seven years old, he not only managed to keep going in this Hell, but he also sang and performed to the wounded and dying soldiers at the nearby hospital.
Eduard grew up during the second world war and experienced first hand some of the hardships when he was separated from his mother and had to stay at a children's home without enough food or proper supplies. Eduard sang to wounded soldiers at the hospital doing his part to cheer them up, he was a high-spirited fellow from the start, a shining star of Russia and the entire world!

I’m 42 and it’s 2024. I only wish I would’ve known about one of the greatest voices ever 42 years ago. He was hidden behind that iron curtain for to long, but I guarantee that if he was alive today he would see what kind of an impact his voice made to those who appreciate it. I’m a farmer out in California but I know great music when I hear it.
English lyrics of the song: "Through the field, along the river - Past the huts - Dressed in a simple common grey coat, Soldier walked… Soldier walked, breaching the barriers, Soldier walked, losing his dear friends Often it happened He walked without halt On and on he walked! He walked in the nights so stormy, Rain and hail With his battlefield companions Songs he sang… Soldier sang, choking down his tears, Soldier sang of Russian birch trees, Of darling’s brown eyes, Home of his parents - On the way he sang! As if forever to his shoulder Gun was glued Everywhere his bitter foemen Soldier fought Soldier fought them in Smolensk and Soldier fought in nameless places Bullets uncounted, Eyes ever sleepless, Soldier fought his foes! Through the field, along the river - Past the huts - Dressed in a simple common grey coat, Soldier walked… Soldier walked, his Homeland’s servant Soldier walked - in the name of life Saving his dear land, Rescuing the world, On and on he walked! Saving his dear land, Rescuing the world - On and on he walked!"
I'm glad he experienced AT LEAST a taste of his Western World fandom before his passing, regardless of how we discovered him because it led to us discovering & liking his other tunes, such as this one. R.I.P.
Eduard Khil was a very good human. He makes me and you guys smiling. If Eduard Khil Will be in life yet, he should be the president of Trollland, and the trollface will be the symbol for Trollland.
People, please stop associate Russia only with communism... This song is not about that. It`s about ordinary soldier who protects his country, his family, about his thoughts, his feelings
Κωστας Monk Khil lived in USSR. Yes. Was the USSR governed by the Communist Party? Yes, it`s truth. But it doesn`t mean that all songs was about communists who want to build beautiful communist future in our communist land :) That is what i want to say.
Behold, the high king! Sir Eduard Khil, the lord of trolls, a man that brought both cheer and sadness, this ballad is incredible, a man of peace. Troll In Peace, sir, Troll In Peace
It's his most popular song. I just found out there are even other songs than his one on youtube (very hard to find), but I like his voice very much which is an evidence of a very good singer because I don't listen to old music.
I love this one, it brings out the full flavour of his voice, it shows more of his vocal potential than “I am Glad, ‘cause I’m Finally Returning Back Home” AKA Trololo Brilliant song.
I've had this song stuck in my head for two days. It doesn't want to go away. I'm litterally being trolled by the greatest troll ever. It's so catchy T_T
I like him a lot. I know a lot of singers but I had nerver heard him before, it was all for Trololo song. I think it's not a shame. We love him and people like me who enjoy real music, know it.
Translation of "Ballad of a Soldier" The soldier wearing the grey greatcoat walked in a field along a steep shore, the soldier walked without regard to any boundaries, he walked loosing his friends, oftentimes without rest, he walked forward.
