Hi, Thanks for all of your videos! They are helping me to learn how to do mosaics for the first time. Much appreciated! Just wondering where I can buy the alkaline resistant adhesive mesh tape here in Australia please? Does Bunnings sell it under a particular name? Cheers 😊
Hi Peter Loved your tutorial and your sugar skull mosaic. Your mosaic looks so well done and finished well. Could you please explain or do a tutorial on making the cut sides of marmox/wedi neat and tidy using alkali resistant tape and thinset. I would like to know how to do it right and neatly. Also do you only have to do it to the cut edges. Maybe you have already covered this, I couldn’t find it. Many thanks, I love your tutorials Alana from regional NSW.
Thankyou so much Alana, appreciate that. I have created a couple of tutorials this one is on cutting substrates, ua-cam.com/video/st8pLrGpj8I/v-deo.html and this one on the edges ua-cam.com/video/nigNC9gH4pY/v-deo.html the one with the edges you don't need a heat gun that was just an experiment, you can use stainless steel staples or galvanized nails if your mesh doesn't stick down well enough while you thinset the piece, they will make it easier and quicker. If your mesh stays stuck down just thinset over the mesh. If you're using thinner Wedi or Marmox you don't need the mesh just thinset the edges. Thinset is American terminology for Cement Based Adhesive here in Australia, don't go into a store asking for thinset as the chances are they wont know what you're talking about ask for a cement based adhesive. If you're going to using any electrical machinery to cut your Wedi or Marmox board, always follow the manufactures safety directions before and during using the machinery. :)
This video was very helpful. thank you Peter. I have purchased my Wedi board and have jig sawed my shape. It is quite large and when covered in glass will be very heavy. I am interested in the hanging brackets, particularly the flat plate type that was on your piece of Marmox in the video. I have looked at the other round ones and the ones that you would attach wire to but I don't think they would be strong enough. Can you tell me where you came across the flat metal plate type? Thank you in anticipation...
Thankyou very much Gayle. I think the hangers that you are referring to are the called the "French Cleat" system and are great to use, they are generally available from hardware stores or there are manufactures that make them to the size you need and they aren't expensive. If its a large piece you may want to consider using them towards the top and bottom of the piece depending on the board and the size. etc. When using Wedi or Marmox board the hangers need to go on before you mosaic the piece. :)
Hi Peter, How do I decide what thickness of Wedi board? I am in Australia and the available sizes I am thinking of purchasing are 1500x900x6mm or 1200x1200x10mm. I would prefer the 6mm sheet because the 900mm width i think will be more manageable for me but do not know if it will be too thin. Many thanks Peter.
You can buy Thermasheet in 3 sizes and comes in 1250 x 600 approx but you need to buy a pack, its available from www.tradewarehouse.com.au I cant advise you because it depends on where you are using it and the size you need. you dont want any flex so if its a large piece go thicker. If you are producing something small you can probably get away with a 6mm especially if its in a frame. If its going to be hung and large my preference is 20mm. :)
Thankyou very much, I can't advise specifically to your job as there are always variables I cannot see. It depends on the size of the table, the support under the table and how thick you can put op top of it, but I cannot see why you cannot use either board providing the exposed sides of the boards are protected. :)
Hi, I have been happily and very gratefully learning how to mosaic via your online tutorials - thank you! Today, I was sealing my first marmox board project. I sealed one piece with mesh tape and grout instead of meshtape and cement adhesive. I realised my error and then sealed the next piece with cement adhesive. I found the grout easier to use as it stuck in place, however the thinset was terrible to use. It didn’t stick at all well, and looks awful. My questions: how do i take the grout off now, and how do I seal properly with thinset? If you have a video showing this, I would greatly appreciate you sending me a link! Thank you, and so sorry for bothering you! Cheers Jackie Sent from my iPhone
Thankyou very much Jackie. It is wise taking off the grout, however unless it’s a large piece l would just discard it because you would need to have it reasonably clean of the grout and mesh. I haven’t done this, you may try soaking the grout with a wet cloth and it may soften a little but either way you can’t leave the grout on because you risk it coming of later as it really doesn’t have any adhesive properties unless a additive is used with it. Thinset is great to use and worth taking the time with it, l find it easier to apply it like frosting a cake if that makes sense. If you find there are a few rough areas you can also go in around 30 or so minutes later and push the flatter when the thinset has firmed up a little. If it cures you can also go in and sand it down as well with some sandpaper but make sure you wear a P2 or a N95 mask and preferably upwind and outside, you do not want breath in the silica dust that is in grout, thinset, crockery, tiles, etc, because if it gets into upr lungs it’s irreversible. If you are adhering thinset or adhere your tessera then using a baggie to do it as it gives you complete control and thinset is great to use for outside mosaics. I think there are a couple of videos showing you how to do the mesh and thinset on the edges of wedi board as well. Have a look at Maverick mosaics on UA-cam. 😊
@@TreasuryRoad you are a real gem and very generous with your information. Thank you very much. This helps a lot! I will discard the grout covered marmox as it is small🥰
Hi Mozhdeh, Wedi 610 has been specifically designed for Wedi board, its not necessarily the only product you can use but a company that designs a product to go with another of their products I would think would be a better choice. :)
Thank you for this information and also, what a fabulous sugar skull! 🤩
Thankyou so much Penny, I know there are many people who don't like Sugar Skulls and I used to be one of them. lol Thanks for watching. :)
Yet another excellent filmette with top tips. Thanks Peter 🙂
Thankyou so much Caroline, appreciate that. :)
Muchas, muchas, muchas gracias por compartir esos consejos y conocimientos, desde ciudad de México ❤️❤️❤️
Muchas gracias y saludos desde Australia. :)

Thankyou so much, you can buy it from Bunnings generally in the plaster section. Have a close look to make sure it’s the right one. 😊

I don’t think it exists in NZ yet :(
Marmox board is available in NZ. marmox.co.nz/
