This is how we saved more money for a downpayment towards a house we ate out about 3x a year for 4 years. We also moved to a cheaper location and got job transfers. It adds up I used to spend $3-8 on a cup of coffee a day for work and $10-15 for lunch times that by me and my husband low end $26 a day to $46 for both of us $130 to $230 a week. Watching a video like this one changed how I thought about those normal purchases. We now still eat out less than 1x a week. I am sipping on my homemade cappuccino. I bought a frother and barista tools, so I still get the feeling and a sandwich press it's $7 from walmart. Hot sandwiches in seconds. Invest a little on better ingredients and tools and you won't feel like you're deprived you will also have control of how clean your food is and know exactly what's in it. That's just lunch money not eating out you can double the savings. He is right.
Sorry but life is about living and unless you bought your house fully with cash you don't own it. No one does - You've just tied yourself up to debt with borrowed money from the bank for the next 50/60 years. I'm not saying what you've done isn't admirable but I do not see the positives for diminishing your quality of life for years just to complete the so called "American Dream" of being able to put a deposit down on a house. There's a balance and everyone I know whose done the same as you and wasted prime years for their life living off scraps regrets it
Thank you for acknowledging the better ingredients factor- now for still less than what you spent before you have better tasting and healthier foods, control over preservatives and oils, you’re saving money, and one other factor a lot of humans do not realize is we aren’t created for this 3 meals a day anyway- we are better eating once or twice and fasting for 8-12 hours or longer.
For everyone complaining about the whole 99 cent sandwich thing. Its not to be taken LITERALLY. The point is that instead of going to lunch and spending 15 bucks 5 days a week, you could bring a lunch for half or less that price. Saving 7 bucks a lunch is 120 bucks per month on JUST lunches. He's right but if I can't even eat a sandwich after going thru college and working at the top companies in management positions then wtf am I living for 😂😂😂
Because it takes time. The big raises don't come until your late 20s early 30s. And may I suggest not living beyond your means? Get the cheapest studio apartment you can find. Live with roommates. Buy the cheapest car possible. Like 5 grand not 30 grand. Get a straight talk phone rather than having the newest apple paying $200 a month for cellphone service. There is so much you can do to save money. You just need to be willing to sacrifice the short term for the long term. He’s not inaccurate about the cost of those “little” daily expenses adding up. But ppl aren’t just paying for the sandwich or the coffee…they’re paying for the convenience and time saved of not grocery shopping and preparing it at home themselves. They’re paying for the little instant gratification and morning motivation that having a fresh Starbucks drink gives them🤷🏾♀️ I’m not saying that makes it “worth it” but buyer behavior these days is much more nuanced than “you could/should just make it at home”.
Still, it's thousands a year on convenience

Btw that’s $18,000 in 10 years from one Starbucks coffee drink a day- 5 days a week.
Facts, it’s about the convenience. Mr.Wonderful is not wrong though about what a waste it’s buying those $11 sandwiches, $4-5 dollar coffee, and so forth when a person could just make it themselves for a fraction. The rest of extra money could easily go straight into the stock market 🤡 This comment section is obviously full of people who don’t know how to manage their wealth.

I realized I was spending a lot a few years back, so I cut back on spending, yet I was still spending hundreds of dollars each month that were not needed to be spent. Now, I treat every expense like an emergency.
Let me tell a tale of two lunches. 1) I was very much like the guy talking, always watching every penny. Always took a sandwich from home even when after years I was so sick of sandwiches that I was literally having to choke them down. It wasn't enjoyable at all. It made me very unhappy, to the point I would dread lunch.
2) my wife usually did whatever she wanted for lunch. She was much happier.
Over the years it may have saved us money, but it made me miserable in the process. If it's short term, sure do what you've got to do to cut costs. But in the long run if you don't enjoy some "luxury" from time to time, it can make you unbelievably miserable.
So it never once occurred to you to just make sandwiches you LIKE or vary between wraps, soup, etc.? Really?
The message is buying on impulse for convenience instead of taking a few minutes to plan ahead and use what you already had helps you save money for more important things that give lasting gratification.

Not everyone has the time or talent to make 2x on their extra cash. That's a recipe for disaster when you invest in high risk assets and you can loose it all so quick.

Near my work place that sells an 8 inch sub will the toppings for 5 bucks. That’s cheaper than buying all the groceries and making yourself.

Like yea you get more bang for your buck for the ingredients, but it takes time, effort, and a larger up front investment and lacks convenience.
But he still is calling out the profit margins. He’s not saying to not enjoy these things, he’s saying you can still enjoy these things yourself more economically with a little extra work.
They have those profit margins because people like you are happy to pay that price, if people stopped buying they would have to reduce the price to bring back customers
You wouldn’t have a clue what the margins are otherwise you wouldn’t be saying this.
