I am 67 y.o. i have been sewing and making patterns and design for 52 years everything from rags to formal wear even a wedding gown or 2. I subscribed to your channel a while back and now that i am retired look forward to increasing my srwing skills and recalling a great many techniques i have forgot. Thank you so much for your clear instruction and video technique. So many content creators skip a lot of steps and that sets a beginner back and they fail and dont know why. You are a.very talented seamstress and an invaluable prescence on UA-cam as most people post home economics classes held in school are completely inept in doing anything with needle and thread.
I love these videos. I've been sewing for almost 60 years, and I still learn from Professor Pincushion. One thing that can NEVER be stressed enough (to new sewers as well as the more experienced ones) is NEVER (and I mean NEVER) use your fabric scissors to cut out paper patterns. Fiskars makes school scissors with either blunt or pointed tip (meant for elementary school children) that are ideal for cutting out paper patterns and are quite inexpensive (I paid about $2 for a pair in the craft section of Walmart).
I made 3 sewing machine covers the past two days using this pattern for the 3 machines I have set up all the time. I like the pattern but I have a hint. I made one for my FeatherWeight and my Viking both of which are wider at the end versus where the needle is. So that area was a little wider than I liked. Just didn't fit as snug as I wanted. I got to thinking about "darts". I used to make clothes and we used darts to fit things. So on the front end of my machines that are narrower I just put a dart in. Works great and nice and neat.
LOVE LOVE LOVE! This cover will be perfect for keeping all of my tools handy when I go to retreats. Thank you for the step by step on all of the measurements & making the pattern.
Have used fleece (not fusible fleece) for the cover (no pocket) Advantages of using fleece:: -no fusing required -no lining required -stretches a little for easing around curves and for fitting on machine -no raveling raw edges -no binding required -no ironing needed during construction -helps "dust" machine when slipped over machine -can be tossed in the washer/dryer and then used immediately without ironing it
I'm diggin that fabric print , totally perfect for this project . Also thanks for all the help you've given me thru this channel , I've really stepped my sewing game up b/c of you !
I know this is an old video, but thank you! I was very successful making a custom drafted sewing machine cover with this tutorial, looking forward to designing one for my serger next.
Love this machine case. I've been bitten by the sewing bug after watching your video tutorials. Very easy instructions. The fabric you used is sooo lovely. CONGRATULATIONS talented Lady. Another project on my list. Thanks for sharing and caring. 👍👍👍
Thanks for the tutorial! What in the heck is bias tape? I guess I need to do some Googling but it's gotta be for clean/finished edges. Not sure of the purpose of the interfacing other than rigidity? I'm a sewing noob but I want to make my own shorts eventually, using fabric I choose myself. This seems like a good starter project too. I have done my own hidden hems for pants which is nice to be able to do myself. Fixed a couple buttons too. Thanks much!
Great tutorial! After completing I will say that you definitely don't need a full yard of fabric for each. If you're like me and are trolling the remnants section, I only used a little over a half yard of each fabric, so I had a lot left over (and my machine is bigger than that spiegel). I also think you can skip the step of pattern pieces since you're just cutting rectangles. Just make sure you cut the side panels first to be able to adjust the main panel as directed in the tutorial.
That Spiegel sewing machine is so beautiful! Looks like it's well-made and has all the right options on it. I hope you have another contest to give one away soon.
Love the fabrics you chose, especially the dressmakers pattern one, I would have used pink binding to match the frocks though, as the yellow is brighter than the dresses? Brilliant cover and video :). Just read the comments and found most of us want the pattern fabric....
Loved this tutorial! I just created one and it’s super cute!! So happy with how it turned out. I must have made my pattern wrong though, because my sides didn’t fit the main body. I just added some darts which ended up being super cute.
Fab thanks so much for the video. I made mine and love it. The only think I would comment was I didn't understand how to finish the ends of the bias binding for the bottom. I did have to look else where for a close up of this.
Yes it will. An option would be to add 1/2 inch to that measurement and then cut it in half and then flip one side so it will be pointed in the right direction on both sides. The extra 1/2 inch is to account for the added seam allowance. You only have to add it to the fabric that needs to be cut for the largest pattern piece and only for the outside unless the inside is also directional.
I'm going to make one of these for my machine. I've given up trying to machine sew the binding though - I always do the back side by hand as I can never get it neat if I try to machine sew the second side
Thanks for this tutorial. After looking at several, I decided that this one was my style and the easiest one to do. I hope to make a cover for my machine soon. :-) Well, soonish. lol
Just completed mine. Loved the pattern, but I would have not be as generous in my measurements the next time around. Do you have a printable version? I like to keep track of completed projects. Thanx,
One other thing I didn't mention. You do not need to make a pattern. All you have to do is cut the two pieces of rectangles with the measurements you get from your machine and then on the smaller side pieces just round the corners on the end that you want to be up. Very simple to make and less work not cutting out a pattern.
Who woulda thunk it’d be so complicated to pin around those curves 🤣 clipping the rectangle kinda seemed to help. I guess I’ll find out how helpful it was once I sew it! I’m so excited for these covers for my serger and sewing machine! We have two labs and we live in the desert. Desert meaning no grass. No grass means lots and lots of loose dirt from them running around outside. They also shed like crazy! It doesn’t seem to matter how much we sweep! So, even though my machines are on a shelf above waist height I’m not convinced that dog hair and dirt won’t find their way into my machines! Thank you for this easy to follow tutorial. ❤️🐾
I just read tour comment about your labs, I know what you mean about the hair, I had a dog that was only part lab, and the amount of hair was insane, noe I have a border collie/ Siberian husky mix, and the hair is even worse, and it does get on/in the machine.
+Gia Alvarado I usually buy it online. You can google "alphanumeric pattern paper" here's one option: www.amazon.com/Dotted-Pattern-Paper-45-Inch/dp/B009KCWGKQ
I have to admit that I have enjoyed watching this tutorial multiple times because of the main fabric pattern. You are lucky your mom has great tastes! A sewing machine cover is one of the first projects I tackled when I bought my sewing machine last year. It didn't turn out great because I used scraps of fabric and kind of quilted it. And, I hadn't sewn in several decades. Now I'm thinking my sewing machine is looking very pitiful, so for its birthday, I'll make it a new cover. It is so great that yours is reversible. I love reversible things! The reverse side can have pockets on the ends of the cover. One thing I think I will do differently is put in zippered pockets. I made my pockets kind of deep, but found that even so, stuff was always falling out of the pockets when I removed the cover. Needless to say, I stopped using the cover a while ago because I was tired of trying to find a new spot for all the stuff that fell out of the pockets. I use a simple old towel for a cover in the interim. Another tip, use the really stiff interfacing, so that the cover will stand up straight on a flat surface. Then you can easily access all the goodies in the pockets whether the cover is on the machine or on the table. I also sewed a loop of fabric to make a handle at the top of the cover. Since I'm already making the cover different than last time, I may use some boning to make the cover stiffer, and the handle will also function to hold the boning in place at the top. While the pockets hold it in place at the bottom. Still in the "thinking" phase, so I'm only hoping this will work as I haven't begun a pattern for this project yet. Your videos always inspire me to revisit old projects and abandoned projects and make them MUCH better. P.S. I still want that Spiegel sewing machine.
Thank you for this wonderful video. Where do I get this paper that you are using to make a pattern? Also, I love that fabric with the ladies on it. Can you tell me where to purchase it? Thanks
the paper is called alphanumeric pattern paper. I got mine off of amazon but you can google that term to find other vendors. the fabric is from JoAnn's but it was from a few years ago so I don't know if they still carry it.
I buy mine through amazon. just search for alphanumeric pattern paper. Or if you have an art supply store, you can buy a role of tracing or graph paper
Nit picking I know... sorry. Your instructions were to cut out fleece for both inner and outer layer but you didn't use it on the outer layer. Good that I watched the whole video before cutting.

Your comment made me smile. My Mom's sewing scissors were sacred, and we children dared not touch them. I treat my scissors the same,
A
yes that was a very expensive mistake my husband made, lol .... he bought me new fabric scissors and now always asks which ones are for paper
Didnt understand why we needed a seperate fabric w lining until you said it is reversible. Thanks, im really enjoying making mine
Your instructions for the sewing machine cover are spectacular!! Thank you so very much!
Excellent instructions. Right to the point. I'm going to adapt this technique for my serger. Who knew something utilitarian could be so much fun?
I made it and it was so easy! Thank you for such a wonderful tutorial!

I've tried several patterns and yours is absolutely the best and so easy. Thank you!!
Very nice tutorial. Easy to follow your directions.
Thank you SO much for your informative videos, they're always clear & easy to follow! ❤❤❤
Love all the tutorials, but I have to say the nails are outstanding!! LOL

I made mine came out exactly like yours. Now I need to do one for my serger and my singer 201-2

I'm so glad you love your new dust cover :)
good job, I didn't think about making a cover for my sewing machine, thx 4 video & instructions👍

Great tutorial. Many thanks for this, incredible work.
Fab thanks so much for the video. I made mine and love it. The only think I would comment was I didn't understand how to finish the ends of the bias binding for the bottom. I did have to look else where for a close up of this.
Yay! I actually made this machine cover! It's a bit "floppy" because I used a thinner interfacing, but I love it! Thank you for the great tutorial. :)
nice! As long as it keeps the dust out then that's all that matters :)
Does using directional fabric mean the design will be upside down on the back side of the cover?
Yes it will. An option would be to add 1/2 inch to that measurement and then cut it in half and then flip one side so it will be pointed in the right direction on both sides. The extra 1/2 inch is to account for the added seam allowance. You only have to add it to the fabric that needs to be cut for the largest pattern piece and only for the outside unless the inside is also directional.
I like this! My next mini project 😊
thanks for your videos, this inspired me to start making mine right now. tho I'm making mine with a handle opening at the top.
nice! I hope yours turned out nice. please post a pic on our fb wall when you finish :)
i will when i finish
I'm going to make one of these for my machine. I've given up trying to machine sew the binding though - I always do the back side by hand as I can never get it neat if I try to machine sew the second side
yeah, it's a little tricky. You can always hand baste it first to give yourself a guidline.
Great video but what about if you wanted the handle to come through so it could be carried with the cover on.
Im making this sewing machine cover and I was eondering if it's ok to see the webbing fleece as well as adhere with the iron?
Thank you.
Thanks for this tutorial. After looking at several, I decided that this one was my style and the easiest one to do. I hope to make a cover for my machine soon. :-) Well, soonish. lol
when you do, please post a picture on our fb wall :)
Would the fabric print not be upside down on the back of the cover? 🤔
I purchased Pellon Peltex 70 to try and make this project, could you please tell me if that the correct one, or I will exchange it. Thank you.
I used something like pellon 987F fusible fleece
Just completed mine. Loved the pattern, but I would have not be as generous in my measurements the next time around. Do you have a printable version? I like to keep track of completed projects. Thanx,
do you also have one that fits a Brothers vx 8500 embrotery sewing machine?
you can do this with any machine. You just have to measure it. :)
Where can I buy the fabric? It is wonderful! Thanks
Will you please do a tutorial for a serger cover?
I enjoyed the project even though i had seam rip several time but my fault not yours but just wanted to say thank you i love it
oh no! that's ok. I still use a seam ripper a lot too. In fact, I have several seam rippers. It happens.
Thank you
love the fabric
do you have any written instructions that I can print our
the instructions are only in video from, not written.
@@ProfessorPincushion thanks but it would be very helpful if you had some written instructions

Actually. Good idea. While learning to make patterns is a good skill, in simple cases...one can wing it. ;)
Thanks, you just made my life that bit simpler, your system has worked well for me, thank you!
She did explain that she made a pattern for future use.
where did you get your fabric please i have searched all over on the web. thank you...it is gorgeous!
What can I use to replace the fusible fleece if I can't get it in Malaysia?
you can just use a soft fabric like regular fleece as a lining
Super Project! - Thanks!
Excellent tutorial thank you!! :)
I LOVE the fabric!!! Where did you get it???
my mom got it for me from Joann's but it was several years ago. they might not carry it anymore
Roughly, how many ch fabric should I buy. I’m trying to estimate for this and a sewing machine mat.
Should you use a serger if you own one?
You can, if you want :)
@@ProfessorPincushion I just purchased one, but I'm not positive when it's meant to be used, and when it's not.
Where can I get fussible fleece?
I picked up mine at JoAnn's. It's in the same section as interfacing
Do you add an inch only to the front width?
where did you get the pattern paper?

I saw that fabric at JoAnns, over a year ago, and regret not buying it!
Hi Tova
Thanks to u! I was able to create this machine cover. I don’t know how to insert a picture on here
nice! You can post it on our fb wall. I'd love to see how it turned out :)
It would have been good if you show us the reverse side too.
Love this!!! Can you tell me where you got the fabric for this project or what it called? Love, love love the outside fabric.
My mom actually bought it for me. I think she got it at JoAnn's but it was a few years ago.
Thanks so much for replying! Love your channel and I learn a lot from you!
Does anyone know if that beautiful fabric is still available?
my mom picked it up at JoAnn's but that was a couple of years ago. I don't think it's still available.
what type of fabric can I use for making sewing machine cover please
Cotton fabric
Where do you get that kind of pattern paper?
+Gia Alvarado I usually buy it online. You can google "alphanumeric pattern paper" here's one option: www.amazon.com/Dotted-Pattern-Paper-45-Inch/dp/B009KCWGKQ
So simple
Where can we find the awesome fabric that was used in this tutorial? Great project, thank you for sharing!
