- Have you ever wondered whether you’re singing with your real voice or a fake voice? Many people think that they have a speaking voice and then entirely separate to that is their singing voice.
I think a lot of people arrive at that conclusion because, for the untrained voice at least, the sounds of speaking when compared to the sounds of their singing are radically different. So, what’s going on here?
Well, the difference we hear between the two types of sound production, singing and speaking, is driven by the different muscular setups within the sound making mechanism: the larynx. You may have heard singers using the terms, head voice and chest voice. A lot of singers still use these two labels to describe the higher sounds of their voice and the lower sounds of their voice respectively.

Finally someone says it! There is no such a thing as a 'fake voice' - what is often perceived as 'fake' is actually just a highly weak and clunky sound that needs training. Besides, the Bee Gees and many great artists I can think of have used the falsetto very extensively as well to incredible effect. Personally, I would not worry about sounding 'real' or 'fake' and just sing :)

I always learned about "head voice" and "chest voice" and could easily tell when I was in one or the other, but when I heard about "mixed voice" and "falsetto" and "belting" and the like, it got rather confusing for awhile. Nowadays I try to say "M1" and "M2" to be more precise and avoid confusion between physiological registers and tonal qualities. You've touched on this in other videos, which is awesome, because it can definitely be hard to work out what's going on during sound production!

I'm a guy and I recently discovered that I've been only singing in head voice. Now my main problem is that my chest voice is totally undeveloped when it comes to singing and I can't transition smoothly from chest to head voice. Usually I can only sing a song by using either just chest or just head voice, not the two together. I will use these exercises and hope to see a difference sometime soon. Thank you for making this video!

chest voice is really hard to access if you always use head voice. you cannot do it overnight.

And thank you for NOT having this video be about AI voice bullshit, even though that's the comparison that the title of this video implies: human singing voices vs. AI ones. So sad that some robot-oriented humans think that that digital fakeout would be cool. As a matter of fact, most modern pop sounds EXACTLY toopluperfect like that. Corporately-made-to-feel-musically-insecure young people are probably using it a lot already for all the soundalike crap on the charts. Chartificials? Thanks again.

Dr Dan, Im still having a hard time finding my "operatic" voice. I sometimes mimic operatic singing. But when I go to higher notes, my throat starts to irritate.
Im nowhere near a singer but I believe that maybe if I find that voice I might have a shot.
I recommend you spend time with a classical singing teacher if you are seeking to develop an operatic tone/voice.
I just want to study this for my fanfiction in wattpad, but then I learn a lot. Thank you, I subscribed! who knows I can sing well during karaoke session ;)

What's funny is my singing voice, when it changed to being a really low baritone, became massively stronger than my speaking voice, to the point that I do not need a microphone

That's a good sign. When you're using your breath efficiently it becomes easy to sing loud and strong.

I have a question about this topic of the two different voices: prior to beginning vocal lessons, I used to only be comfortable singing in my low register with sounds similar to Toni Braxton, Norah Jones, etc - jazzy, soulful and deeper notes. After training my teacher had helped me to develop my upper register and found that I have more stamina and less wear and tear to my voice when I sing higher and she shockingly said I am actually a soprano. However, when I sing in my upper register, the sound is more classical and I am so confused as to how to merge these two seemingly opposite voices - a deeper soulful sound which can’t seem to hit high notes and a higher classical sound which struggles to have a richness in my lower notes. It seems like such an odd problem to have !

I consider some operatic voices respectively those of some artist as kind of manufactured. Pressed, squeezed, not real. I really prefer when it sounds natural.

i started practicing you CD few months ago but i had to paused my practice due to exams and when i started again it feels like there is no connection between what i sing and my diaphragm also i feel problem with head voice wish i could stay tuned with my real voice with this one exercise 😊

Hi Dr. Dan! I've been learning a lot from your videos. I have a question though, after me and my friends had a karaoke session, my throat had an itchy feeling to it, though after a few hours had passed it was gone. Was it vocal fatigue? Or improper technique? I'm still not sure on what parts to focus on fixing that issue. Thank you!

Great video! Thank you very much, these days I was wondering if I should sing with my real voice, but since I can do many voices, I got confused about which one is the one! Now I know. However, I have a question. I can sing for a while with a raspy rocky voice ( which is not exactly my natural sound even if I can do it rather easily) but I get tired after 8 to 10 songs and then I begin to choke. Is there anything I can do to last longer, or to know if I do it like it should be done? Should I keep doing it or will I hurt my voice in the long run?

My voice is fake as heck. I'm actually having a blast with it. :D
fahimmuchi I think SLS intended for the GOO and GEE stuff to make the transition less breathy. I also think that starting around E4, all men's voices become CT dominant. Going back through many months of your videos, I noticed that you spent more time on the head voice exercises before moving on to the chest voice ones (which you do fantastically well, by the way!) At some point, head voice sounds so much like chest that it can fool us because the muscles are equally strong there and the resonance is balanced and full. When I didn't have any vocal breaks, I can't recall ever practicing chest voice warm ups. but I do recall singing for hours in head voice... Unfortunately, my computer finally died yesterday and everything from the past 8 years has been lost. It might be recoverable, but that's a lot to expect from an 11 year old machine.
fahimmuchi Heck yeah, it helps! and to think, I have been doing the head voice exercises too breathy, and always top down! And then when I go to sing, I can't belt because the connection has become too weak. So it really is the head voice that needs to be developed before the chest will go up. Did you listen to the latest song clip on my channel? the top note is a D4- the most difficult note in my entire vocal range! What, only 3 months ago, sounded like it was tied up in knots :D SLS works, and you are the first to legitimize it in my stubborn mind, my friend.
