    I've been watching your show for about two years now. I don't often compliment anything, but your show is an incredible asset to the art community, as well as regular curious people like me around the world. I feel lucky to have this stuff at my fingertips. It's wonderful creative education and entertainment. It is so nice to watch after a long trying day at work.
    On another note, I've been fortunate enough to have slept in tents in many of these landscapes in the desert Southwest of the US. I've had the pleasure of waking up before sunrise in Sedona, surrounded by red canyons, with the sun's whitish rays shooting over the canyon edges. I have done quick pencil sketches of those unique land formations in my travel journal and I look back on them with the fondest memories.
    This man is an absolute American art treasure. I hope one day he gets the wide recognition he deserves, if he hasn't already. But thanks to you, now I know about his work. Thank you both for an awesome episode! I'll keep watching as long as you keep producing.

      Thanks for taking the time to comment on Geoffreys show. Yes I agree his work is remarkable and until we came along I don't think to many folks were aware of his ability. Of course we hope that all of the Artists we film have the chance to have more people around the world see what they do. I love coming back to the states to film Artists, it also gives me the chance see visit the many amazing national parks across the country and of course meet some amazingly talented people. Thanks again and keep passing the word around for us. If you know any Artists that you think this would be good for , send them our way, all the best, Graeme

    Mr. Blackburn, as a fellow artist drawn to a realistic style I've thoroughly enjoyed your episode of CIYL! Thank you for your inspiring words regarding finding our own style and our own true north. Wonderful! I look forward to seeing more from you. Colleen

      Please call me Geoffrey, and if it is ok with you I will address you as Colleen. (Mr. makes me feel as old as I actually am and I live in the Great state of Denial which the main part of the state of Utah)... I am very glad you enjoyed the episode! I can hardly wait to finish the book and get on with making more vids. and perhaps doing live conferencing (once I figure out how to do that)... We geezers just love to talk..and talk...and talk. Fortunately, in over half a century of fumbling around, I actually have stumbled into a few things worth passing along... I look forward to seeing your work as well! Cheers, Geoffrey

    Watching Geoffery work is like finding a previously hidden path into the definition of meticulous.

    • @geoffreyblackburn5611
      @geoffreyblackburn5611 2 роки тому +1

      Speaking of hidden paths: as I was working on my 1600+ hour Two Hawks painting, I discovered an interesting thing: It turned out that I was litterally using time to create three dimensional space on a two dimensional surface (albeit very thin space), but space that I could actually go into! Very trippy stuff! I've probably gone off my rocker, but if you could actually see the painting in person, look into the glazes, you would see what I mean... This is part of the fun of doing what I do, the way I do it! Pushing the envelope WAY beyond where any "sane" person would go... FYI- I had actually stopped painting in April of 2018. I just restarted again a couple of weeks ago. Back down the rabbit hole I go! Tally ho!

    Thank you all for watching the episode!! I will respond to each of you as time permits and I figure out how all this social media stuff works. One thing I can tell you for sure: there is NO TOP END!!! In other words, there is NO LIMIT to how good YOU can get with your art even if you have "hit a plateau" or if you think you have no real talent, I want to assure you there IS a way to access your own ability. Not necessarily easy, but simple and DOABLE. By YOU!

    Geoffrey, your work is over the top fantastic. I have always enjoyed the southwest and the canyon country. I have produced hundreds of kodachrome and Ektachrome slides of various parts of Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico. My images are very detailed and colorful, but pale to those paintings that I see come from your brush. Geoffrey, excellent, excellent, and excellent again.

    Hi folks! Book Update: I am working my tiny tush off on the book: How. The Creator's Handbook, as we speak. Currently, I am experimenting with an approach. And, I'd appreciate your input. Here's what I am considering: usually when someone sells someone a book it's a one-off kind of a deal--the publisher designs a cover and the general book package to 1. attract your attention from across a room full of other books; 2. get you to pick up said book and 3. look inside, 4. so, you will hopefully purchase said book and of course, 5. read it. BUT, most publishers don't much care what happens after that. I do. I want you to use it over and over again. So, I am playing around with the concept of reading it from front-to-back (DUH, what an idea), but USING it, back-to-front. At the moment, this is how I am putting it together. It is over 90% "in the can", but there are a LOT of technical pieces yet to finish...
    Update on future videos: I have also begun studying up on how to do my own videos (as much as Graeme and the Amazing Sophia adore my scintillating wit, and "Olympian Wisdom", (eye roll permitted here), I am guessing it would be inconvenient for them to dash up here to Millcreek every few weeks to record me in my natural habitat.) I am moving forward on that front as well. What I am considering, is a series of videos covering art technique, art as a career, but more importantly, the much deeper subject of the art process. This will expand upon the book: comments welcome here or at : info@howcreatorshandbook.com

    The technique I demonstrate in the video is one of MANY I have devised over the years- I have tried all kinds of things - I have used thick brush strokes, knives, water colors all kinds of mediums. When I worked in acrylics (1970's), I had a propane torch in my left hand to dry the paint faster as I painted. This was my surreal over- caffeinated and in a hurry period...The point here is, I have always experimented. Borrowed from this artist or that artist or just invented it myself. You should too. This is how you find and create YOUR own technique. You learn from Master Trial and Master Error. The greatest teachers of all!

      Thank you! I appreciate that. I have just begun working on a series of videos to greatly expand upon what I call the Creation Process which is the basis of my book, How. The Creator's Handbook, which I hope to roll out in the next few months. The text part of the book was actually done last summer, but legal and technical issues prevented me releasing it then. Initially the book was to come out first, followed by the videos, but the videos will probably precede the book due to the pandemic. I have been working on this project since 1982 and have found that what applies to art applies broadly to EVERY aspect of life. I have a lot of information to share!!! Stay tuned!

    Can I ask about the lighting he uses. I always thought that the colours change , or you don’t see the right colour with lights on them as you paint. For instance dark blue might look like black when put on a wall without the lights from the lamps. Sorry, English isn’t my first language.

      Excellent question. I use GE Reveal lights to paint by they really pop the color especially the blues and purples and let me see what I need to see. I have used them for years. I used to use the incandescent version--now I use the LEDs-much cooler, but the color is great and a regular human can actually afford them.

    UPDATE: 11/24/19
    Still alive. The text of How the Creator's Handbook is done. It has been done for more than 8 weeks. A little tweeking is still to come-then the 30 or so index page hairball. The big delay is both a legal butt-covering operation and a very sincere desire NOT to infringe upon a fellow artist's legal rights. As mentioned in a previous update, I want to use 50 +- really cool sci-fi illustrations from previous decades/centuries and put them in a totally new context and share this wonderful art with a whole new audience and make the book more fun to read. To that end, as an artist myself, I absolutely do NOT want to infringe upon anyone's copyrights. So, I have to try to establish whether or not each image is in the public domain. This is really tricky. I did much of this research in the early pre-internet 1990's. I am redoing it yet again in 2019 using the internet and other 21st Century resources, including local libraries, and the Library of Congress. Ultimately (and expensively), I will be consulting with my Attorney as well.
    Further complicating my research is the fact that international copyright law is Byzantine. As I currently understand it, for an image to pass into the "public domain" in the U.S. it is the date of the artist's death plus 50 years, in most European countries it's death plus 70 years, in some South American countries it's death plus 100 years before an image can be safely used. Worse, is the fact that on many of the images, (if the artist's signature appears at all), it is undecipherable. (Hard to research that). But, I am doing the best I can to make sure I do not infringe on any of my fellow artist's copyrights. Understand, however, I do NOT need any of these images to make the book work. I only wish to honor these fantastic artists whose work has so fired my own imagination and have some fun while I am at it. I think you will appreciate the result and hopefully, forgive the delay.
    Anyway, that's what's up. I'll keep you posted.

    • @ColourinyourlifeAu
      @ColourinyourlifeAu  5 років тому +1

      If you put old paint in a jar, or colours you have mixed and may not use again for a while, the water over the top will stop them from going off, you just pour the water out when you need to use the paint again

      the water keeps air off the paint and the oil from leaching out. Close the lid. I haven't tried it on newer paints, but it worked great on the older oil paints I use. Also, I now use so little paint that I don't bother anymore. But, occasionally, I mix up a batch and it still works like my beatnik teachers taught me in 1960...

      @@geoffreyblackburn5611 it's so interesting that you use little amounts of paint, bc you're right, as I've often heard that the "gallerists," - lol - want a LOT of thick paint on paintings. Wow, you're amazingly talented, thanks so much!

    • @geoffreyblackburn5611
      @geoffreyblackburn5611 5 років тому +1

      Thank you!
      re: thick paint-I think some of "The Gallerists" push that idea because it makes it easier to convince a newbie collector that they are getting a " genuine original" if they see the big bold strokes. It also allows "The Gallerist" to posture over the art and point out "the artist's unique double-reverse backflip" brushstroke. Or, maybe they sell art by the pound? difficult to tell with some of them...
