Duane Hoven | NHRA Super Stock GT/PA 1971 Ford Maverick Grabber | Mercury 302ci

  • Grocery getters turned race cars, just another reason to love class racing! In Duane Hoven's case, it is a Ford Maverick that he's owned since the age of 14, which became a bracket car and now a Super Stock car. The Ford Maverick never came with a 4-barrel carburetor so Duane utilizes a self-built screaming 302ci motor out of a 1968 Mercury Cougar, putting the car in GT/PA and pleasing the crowd with high flying, bumper dragging wheelies.

    Back in '81, I bought 11 of these cars from a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury dealer for $750. They were former loaner/rental cars. Two had 250 cid engines and 9 had 302 cid engines. I spiffed them up a bit and sold 10. I kept a brown one and gave it to my oldest daughter. She drove it for 2-3 weeks and didn't want it anymore. Friends, at school made fun of the car because it was a Maverick. I took it to my shop, and I did major changes to it. I had a '69 Mustang Mach I that I bought at an insurance auction that had been T-boned wrecked. It had a 351 C 4v engine. I bought a new 351w HO crate engine with 700 CFM Holley carb, used the C6 transmission, rear end, rear spoiler, bucket seats, steering column, center console, shifter, and a few other items from the Mustang. Repainted the Maverick dark bronze pearl with new 3M stripes, front spoiler, 15x7 Magnum 500 wheels, headers, 3:70 rear Detroit Locker gears, rear sway bar, and Lakewood traction bars. 4-wheel disc brakes from a wrecked Lincoln Versailles, '65 Thunderbird sequential taillights, and switched all Maverick emblems with Shelby snake emblems. I picked up my daughter at school one day and drove her to her part-time job. She was impressed and wanted the car. I told her that she had already owned it. I gave it back to her for her high School graduation in '82. She still has the car even today. She maintains the car herself, puts it away for the winter, in her barn, on Labor Day weekend, and takes it back out on Memorial Day. She's raced it a few times with 4:30 Detroit Locker rear gears and drag radial tires. The car turns low 11's.

      That’s incredible and a hell of a story! The things you could get back then too. Now you’re lucky to find a used Honda for a half decent price.

    Good ole J code 302. I had one in a 68 Cougar. I wish I would have saved it for my 70 Maverick. My car weighed 2920 with same setup just not a J code 302 but a roller motor. Light is Might.

    Thanks for the interview, was curious about this combo..carb discussion over my head.

    • @driverinterviews

      The 1968 Ford came with Autolite carb while the Mercury came with the Holley carb. So in the case of Super Stock GT it makes more sense to go with the Mercury combination and get that better carb. Then on top of that, NHRA approves a Quickfuel carb as a replacement.

    NOT possible to put a Boss 302 engine into a Maverick without spring tower modifications. The cylinder heads are too wide and no room for exhaust manifolds/headers.

    • @kirklandracing
      @kirklandracing 2 роки тому +1

      @@sergeantmasson3669 actually it is TRUE. I ran the same setup from 1998 to 2005. Also, a 351W is wider and it will fit without modifications to shock towers just not hood clearance if you running a tall intake. I used cheap blackjack headers at the time mainly for street use.
