Image transfer techniques for Junk Journals, Tags & Paper

- Welcome back! Experiment with me as I dabble in transferring digital images to old book covers, paper, card stock and vintage music paper. Scroll down for more info by clicking "show more" right below.
These 2 techniques I experiment with are not new but they are fun to play with. One technique is super quick while the other takes a little more time. Let me know what other substrates or take aways you come up with in the comments below.

Love the results with the Acetone. I've never tried that! Maybe you could try using a burnt or raw umber watered down paint or ink around the outside to cover the white halo that you don't like. I use a charcoal pencil around images all the time to make them stand out. You would have to spray it with a matte sealer of some kind. I would do that anyway with these transfers. Helps to make the white halos disappear.
I love the matt medium transfers, I love doing them on canvas, you can also use photo paper . I have transferred hundreds of photos to canvas and other surfaces in the past works awesome. Glossy magazines also work well

I did this in school we used Tate Center and we also did this with I heard of someone doing it with awesome cleaner from the dollar store I haven't tried it yet but I would like to try that myself
I like the yellow rose transfer even with the splotches!!!
Correction it wasn't paint thinner it was acetone
Try lightly swirling with a lightly-damp sponge. It'll come off quicker and not scrape the image!

Lovely! You could add some Distress ink in Vintage Photo around the edges.

Hi. I do not have a laser printer so I do my transfers with my ink jet. I have to say I have never had a problem with transfers. I was always very happy with the results. Thank you for a great tutorial as always. I have never tried a transfer on an old book so I will definitely give it a try. Also I don’t know if there is any difference but I used the liquid gel medium for my transfers and then removed the paper just as you did.
Thanks for the info Susan. I think I use to use ink jet years ago but then somewhere along the way someone said that they don't work and apparently that's not true so I think the lesson is, experiment! I'm always open to breaking the rules. How does the liquid gel medium work, the same? or better do you think?

Hey you🥰 So did you do all of your copies with a laser printer? I’m just about to purchase an ink jet printer because I thought laser printers weren’t good for digital photo copying. So confused. Help!

Love that old journal and the flowers on it are amazing! A while back I did some transfers on fabric with Citrisolv. I have never tried the matt medium
Thanks Robin, I love those old ledgers. The first time I tried a transfer was about 20 years ago with acetone in a can from the hardware store...talk about knocking me out! not a good idea...stupid actually! I think I've tried citrisolv too is that still around?

Very interesting. I kinda like the ledger cover just the way you did it even though there's a halo. Just looks a little more vintage and not so perfect. I'm going to have to try this!! Thanks for sharing.

The matte medium doesn’t actually transfer the image to the book...the image is captured in the matte medium, then you remove the paper. The matte medium acts like a glue and holds the ink. You can do the same thing by just coating the image with matte medium. Letting it dry, and removing the paper-gently- from the back. Interesting to try it both ways. When you can see the image you are transferring, you can position it, or use only a portion of the image. So, possibly a bit more control over the final image?
I also used ink jet images only for my transfer work. I have never worked with laser print images...but I wonder if toner/ink is a more permanent ink...? Maybe even more lightfast? Has anyone tested the archival qualities of laser print?
Oh wow that is very interesting I will play with that. Do you using a light spray of water to remove the paper when lifting the paper from the back? As far as the printers I think when I first started I was told only ink jet worked and then somewhere along the way was told only laser print. Apparently they both work, just goes to show never say never. Not sure about the longevity of either inks but I do have some transfers I used acetone on that are over 20 years old and I believe I used a cheap ink jet printer with a black and white print and they are still clear.
Thank you for the great video. I did transfers with Decal It way back when. Their instructions suggested using a coat of the medium on the back after removing the paper to minimize the paper fibers leftover. With their method, you coated the front of the print, turned it over when dry and dampened the paper to remove the fibers. Following the back coat to minimize the leftover fibers, you used the medium to mount the print like a decal. It might be worth trying the extra coat on your method to see if it helps with the leftover fibers.

Hello fellow Frieda fan, thank you for this cool video. I admit I had more fun watching than my impatient self would likely have trying the technique myself. As for the wonky edging challenge, how would stamp inking (for example, the Tim Holtz distress ink in Vintage Photo) the edge around the image on the ledger work? From this side of the screen, it looks like it could compliment the look of both the image and the ledger nicely. Cheers, Ardith

Matte medium can also be found at Blick and Amazon under other brand names.
I bought my gel medium from Blick and very highly recommend it.
I've seen a few people successfully using inkjet prints, but not with gel medium.

I love doing transfers, you are right it depends on the substrate. I did a black and whit one on a canvas board and it came out beautiful then I used I painted it. Thanks for sharing such a fun video 😍🌴

yes I forgot to mention that I would put a sealer using the mat medium or glossy medium .

if you reverse your image especially with words...before you print in your editing software; (like in photos)... the words will print backwards but once you lay the image down and transfer they will be correct to read. The finished image will be like the original before editing!
