I knew since nursing school that bedside nursing was not for me. I am a psych nurse for an organization and love it. I get really upset because I get many comments from other nurses and non-nurses saying psych nursing is not real nursing. Just because I am not at the bedside does not make me any less a nurse!
OMG I can’t believe that! What you do is vital and it takes a strong person to go in and do that everyday. You are needed and beloved and thank you for your service
it takes a special nurse to be a “psych nurse”. You’ve got “unique” skills for this kind of specialty in nursing. More power
I’m a psych nurse too!! I love my job and the mental health field so much!! Bedside nursing and acute care are not for me either. Psych nursing is truly a a hidden gem in the nursing field and it takes a different skill set than other nursing but we are no less than other nurses !
I’m going back to school to be a psych NP. You should consider it too if you haven’t already !!

You forgot about flight nurses and CCT nurses on ambulances! They make bank, because a lot of them do it on the side after their full time nursing job.
I worked for over 20 years as a nurse coordinator in a specialty clinic. Patient care, plus so much more. Took critical thinking, assessment skills, education, loved it. I was able to use my nursing skills but worked 5 days a week, supposedly 8-5 but always longer.
Care Management!! ❤ yay.....been a Care Manager for most of my Nursing career. It's amazing, all about the people and getting to know and help outside of their hospitalizations. I am blessed to be able to follow up with patients for years.
My job as a nurse starts next week.... Exciting nervous all mixed in one.... Happy 😊 🙏

@@johnnygomes7500 I was a public health nurse consultant for the State. I thought I had the best job in the world. Most consultants came up from the county, but I actually started at the state level. I thought I didn’t like being a nurse until I discovered public health.

I worked as a CNA for 10 years and if it wasn't for kidney failure that got me before moving onto LPN and RN...I ended up on dialysis instead. Would you be able to help me find a program so I can advance further to LPN....or any other position where I am not so much "bedside" but more axillary...office, homecare(which I was an aide for several years so I know about care plans etc) or anything else I don't come into contact with those that are sick because of my weakened immune system. I appreciate any information and continued your good work in your field..😊
I started as a NICU nurse then switched into clinical research. I still have clinical days and some hands on nursing skills without having to be on my feet 12hrs a day, don’t work nights or weekends!
My nursing research class was my favorite, I abandoned the ARNP track and went all in on nursing education, have never looked back.
Can I ask what kinds of things you do? My first Bachelors was in Cellular Biology and that was my fave! Would this be a "Nurse Researcher" title?
needaget healthierOrelse not unless you have a nursing degree to go with it. And it’s usually more broad than that not in a lab. It’s conducting research in clinic settings and hospital settings with patients and medications/treatments.

@@needsmorecowbell1758 pretty much! I am a certified clinical research coordinator, I've been doing it for 8 years. I am not a nurse, my background is in medical assisting, this is rare. The only difference in what a RN and myself is pay. I make 50,000 a year while a nurse can make way more, but I don't have a college degree. Currently in nursing school prerequisites!

Ritz Carlton in Orlando has an RN on staff! They monitor and lead a lot of the training, in addition to other responsibilities. Plus, they get to work in a pretty place that smells delish and they get all those hotel employee perks!

I love being an ent nurse. An otolaryngology nurse. ❤💙👩⚕️🗣I heard they deal with allergies (spring season), and disorders with the throat and ears and nose. The pros of this profession is dealing with singers like celebrities.
Anticoagulation Nurse here! I love it! I work from home, get the patient's INR lab results over EPIC, review their chart since last INR, and then manage their warfarin dosing telephonically. We work fairly independently, and develop keen communication and assessment skills. No two days are alike. I hope I can do this job until I retire. Never had a job I could say that about!

Yes. When your too old and injured from all the lifting and pulling and stress and too experienced aka too expensive ... they make your life a living hell until you resign or are fired due to «an error « you made . Then you are replaced by a young fresh cheap bright eyed non jaded new nurse 😸
But I think the diffrence and the gratetude I get from them are worth it
And if you take care of how you lift it istn't that exhausting

Outpatient specialty clinics are great. You work Monday through Friday with weekends & holidays off.
Great video! I do wish you would touch base on not all home health nurses work at numerous homes. I do peds home care and I go to their house at 8am for my shift and I work until 5:30pm when mom/dad come home from work. We stay with one client the whole shift who needs high level of nursing care. Many nursing students don't even know about Peds home care! I get experience with trachs, ventilators, g-tubes, etc! It is awesome!

francesca paleracio Get your footing in bedside. A lot of home health companies do minimal training and it can be a lot to learn on your own. I’m a new nurse and I ABHOR bedside it’s the absolute worst. I’m stuck for 2 years, I know at the end I’ll have tons of knowledge and experience that’ll help me be a competent home health nurse.

Yes! I love doing peds home health :) It is so gratifying to build a relationship with the munchkins, babies, and kiddos as well as their families. You get to witness their progress developmentally and medically over time. Helping to wean off of vents and g-tube feeds is difficult, but so gratifying to help facilitate. Some of the patients are quite high acuity, and stable enough to be at home is not really stable so much as it is "stable". Many peds home health patients are very medically fragile and clinically complicated. It is definitely a different level of self-reliance working nights in this specialty, but one that I love more than anything else.
@@fdpc517 Not sure if you are still considering it, but I would definitely recommend applying to peds home health agencies. As long as they are willing to train you, and provide you with a good preceptor it's definitely worth considering. The pace of learning is not quite as overwhelming for a new/new-ish grad as a hospital setting. You learn each patient's routine, medical history, care, and baseline 1:1, which allows you to build a stronger holistic framework for understanding all aspects of your patient's care.
The truth is unless you have experience in these non-bedside jobs its very difficult to enter into.
I did clinical documentation the last 6 years of my career. You make sure the physicians are documenting all the diagnoses to capture the severity of illness and proper reimbursement. My long clinical experience really helped.
Hey Nurse Blake. Thank you for being you! Love your videos! I come from pediatric homecare nursing (trachs, vents, G-tubes, documentation ,etc). Currently, I am a substance abuse/mental health nurse in a crisis unit/residential substance rehab treatment home. 3 nights-12 hour shifts. Just giving your viewers another option (depending on where you live) because often, nurses are unaware of this opportunity as well.

I work in care coordination for a major health insurance company. It’s remote, from home - been around almost four years. Also, a note about education/leadership roles… they prefer folks that have two or five letters after their name; not three.

At the moment I am a Physician Assistant Student and become a new job profile when I am graduated. I love to watch your videos so keep up the good work!

Something I learned from the nurse I shadowed a few weeks ago is you can be a nurse on a cruise 👀 the company she was telling me about required 4 hours of work per day & then you do whatever you want for the rest of the day! Your expenses are also covered!!

Is anyone here a shy nurse? I really want to be a nurse but I'm shy and a little bit socially awkward so I don't know if I'd be a good fit. I would be interested in working in OR, Public Health, Research, or Infection Prevention.

Not a shy nurse, but I am easily overwhelmed by having to interact with the same patients constantly throughout a shift, and sometimes over the course of their stay. I like to work with different patients quickly and efficiently, the more people I can help and send off I am happy. Sounds like you’d do better in an OR setting or something in the background like infection control.
I'm shy but don't let that phase you. As you go through nursing school and your career your social skills will get better.
Shy nurse here! I’ve found that the more and more time I spend on the floor and interact with patients it gets easier. I work on an ortho unit and love it 😊
Nursing forces you to interact with people every single day and with experience you find your voice. It takes all types of personalities and there are so many different areas of nursing that you can choose from to find where you fit. If you are interested, it’s a good career to consider.
I'm a nurse aide educator plus I do dementia training and BLS. Before that I work the beside in Skilled nursing facility
There also is Utilization Management Nursing.

Keep looking. You will find your perfect fit. I was ready to quit nursing entirely until I discovered public health nursing. I went on to a 35 year career and never looked back.

I started as a CNA in a skilled nursing facility. Then a TMA in skilled nursing facility. Some assisted living experience too. Then LPN in 2013 I did skilled nursing, cardiology clinic, & foot care "in the home", ie home, assisted living, skilled nursing & senior rec center clinics. Then RN in skilled nursing, assisted living , & clinic phone triage. Next, Hospice Case Manager 😃
I am also a PHN & working on my Holistic nurse certification

I've enjoyed your videos so far. But I was disappointed (though not surprised) that geriatric nursing (AKA LTC) was not included. Congrats on five years as a nurse. I've been a geriatric nurse for THIRTY five years. I've tried other things, but this is what I love. We have no backup specialists. We are psych/urology/trauma/hospice/med-surg/respiratory all in one. And these days, we've been getting admits straight from ICU. Anywhere from 17 to 50 patients/residents. And in some places I've been the ONLY nurse in the whole building. But for those who want long-term relationships with residents and families, this is it.

@@soha7617 I have 60 as night shift RN at long term care facility. 120 bed facility. I'm first line before we send out or wake up doctors at night.
I’m sorry but that doesn’t sound safe, I’m always getting admits from places like that.
@@oscarg1006 most of the time those places are hospices, there are for the elderly population that cant stay home because they dont have the physical and/or mental health necessary to take care of themselves. Those nurses dont work alone for 60 patients, that would be really dangerous and kind of impossible lol. The nurses have a team with them of LPNs and PSW, they manage the floor to make sure that everything is ok and provide care like vital sign, wound care, medication, mental assessment, admissions, palliative care... So yes there almost all in one nurse :)
You can also work as a nurse for a liability Insurance company - reviewing claim files. Your patients are on paper only. You get to review the reported injuries, treatment plans, etc and advise the insurer if the plan is reasonable. This helps the insurer avoid doctors trying to pad the bills. It is a 9-5 office job.
Don’t forget veterinary nursing! As a veterinary nurse, you work with administering medication, catheterization, routine surgical procedures, and more for animals (:

thank you so much for the video i already knew about homcare in nursing but did not know it was considered a job different from the hospital care... i really hope to get into a clinical case manager, home care, or forensic nurse job. i studied nursing in mexico and have been out of school since 2018. until 2022 will i be in the states working to save up for the nclex to start of my credentials and maybe i will have to do some extra classes either online or in person. but im optimistic to ecercise my carrer eventually. because even if married and with kids one day. and not a nursing job. as in minimum wage. a nurseing job even without the full funds of retirement is a good paycheck to paycheck upgrade in income for a family. :3 thank you so much.

Community Outreach Nurse here! I started my career in cardiac step down unit and then a trauma floor, but I always wanted to be a community outreach nurse. Now I've been doing my dream job for some years. I have hours at the clinic but I mainly go were my clients/patients need me. I work mainly will vulnerable populations: sex workers, people who are homeless or in unstable living situations, people with substance use issues, and more. It's not a job for everyone, but I really like moving around the city with my backpack.

I'm an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant in a pediatricoffice. I start as a bedside OB nurse. I get to teach parents, residents, medical students, nurses, anyone who wants to learn about breastfeeding. I also get to help babies feed.
I'm a Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) It's a challenging and wonderful field of nursing. The pinnacle of critical care nursing.

My goal is to one day be a documentation specialist. I’m old and my body won’t allow all that running around forever and this way I can work from home
I have worked as an Investigator for our state mental health hospital. We investigate allegations of abuse, neglect, and exploitation of vulnerable adults. It was a very challenging and rewarding experience. Now I am a Utilization Review nurse so i make sure that everyone who is there meets requirements to be there and are not just being held to charge insure companies more money.
Retired Home Health Nurse here! Loved the freedom of being on the road. Made some wonderful friendships along the way.

Thanks for showing all the opportunities out there. I hope the nurses who are starting out really think about the most important member of the team- the patient- as I am reading a lot of comments on how much nursing "sucks, etc?? There are a lot of opportunities, but before you jet off to work at a resort, or any other nursing option, take the time to really learn the profession, and how to BE a nurse. With COVID 19, my mantra of "everything begins with Med/Surg bedside nursing", was shown to be accurate in spades!!! Some of the craziest, beast-mode, like being at a war front, terrific nursing ever seen at my, and other hospitals!!!
In the pause, I encouraged nurses who had never seen or done the things they had to do, to be proud, and to take the experience for what it is. Now the confidence level and appreciation for the job is palpable, even on tough nights. Nothing bothers or throws them off kilter now!! Kudos to all nurses out there and be safe!! No matter what type of nursing you decide to do, remember that you represent ALL of us. Corny, maybe, but true.

Hey has anyone heard of a “fitness nurse”? I love fitness and teaching it and I would love to be able to combine the two together. I have researched that some locations have a gym inside the hospital, and that nurses help with operation of these facilities. Any thoughts or comments would be great.
Ambulatory nurses wasn’t mentioned. We work Monday through Friday in out patient clinics. Many clinics have a nurse that works in a specialty. I am a phone triage nurse that will give medical advise to patients that call our office. I also give injections and manage warfarin dosing by checking INR’s. If you are burnt out from the hospital and want a career change, check this nursing job out. You are off weekends and holidays

I have a home health nurse (one for the week, and one for a weekend). I'm a night owl, and my nurse put me first on her list, she's a morning person. I don't know how to get this changed.
