For those genuinely unsure about the flaws section, I have a quick and easy recommendation: A crippling fear, and a stress response. For your crippling fear you can use thing like fire, or the dark, or the ocean. Or you can try for more exotic and vague ones like your past, or blood, or alcohol, or magic. The magic fear has a slightly more difficult but interesting cousin in the form of casting characters who are specifically afraid of their OWN magic. This works best for sorcerers and warlocks, but you could probably squeeze it in to anyone who uses magic. For stress responses, the most common ones are just flat out running, some form of RP paralysis, a mental breakdown, passing out, a blind violent rage, or something of that nature. You can get more inspiration by checking out the various madness tables in the DMG.
Alternatively a situation that may get them to act against their best interests. "I am prone to jump headfirst into dangerous situations" as an example.
@@steeledminer616 An example that is a mix of that and a fear, from Critical Role: The Rogue that is so deeply afraid of losing anyone in the party that he is constantly throwing himself into very risky situations and frontline combat so as to meet potential threats and take them out before they could threaten the others. great framework. i had a character who was a hermit for a long time, and began talking to himself in mirrors. when he started adventuring, he was uncontrollably angry at his reflection and would scream and speak at it. made for some interesting situations in anything where i could see my reflection. water, a shiny shield, mirrors, etc all became a problem for me.

If he keeps the series going for long enough you will start to wonder wether that sock on the wall was after the potted wiggler or before the Harry Potter books.
Hey, why did your character sheets look weird? They're all missing the part that says "daddy issues" in the flaws section. That's on everyone's sheet, right?
this is why 90% of the americans join the military, they could be cozy in some dungeon cellar playing DnD, but instead they are somwhere getting shot at, mowing some grass, or at a hoehouse.
I'm not an expert, but from what I could gather casters in 1.&2. edition had to had to prepare each spell by "filling" one of thier slots with the specific spell . You also could only prepare each spell only once. This is sometimes referred to as "Vancian casting", since it was based on the magic in the "Dying Earth" series by Jack Vance. Mages would forget the spell they cast and had to use a spellbook to recover them. I'm 17 tho and got this from D&D videos on youtube, so might not be 100% accurate.
@@War_Magus I feel like the concept is definitely not easy to understand if it has to be explained via metaphor and if every non-D&D player (or simply new player) is baffled by it. Meanwhile the concept of mana is extremely common.
@@War_Magus While the concept is easy, the vocabulary certainly isn't. (like how attack bonus should be accuracy bonus so players don't confuse it with a bonus to your damage, which was something needed to be clarified in the video). Calling it something like "stored mana" that you have to recharge each day, and then "attune" it to whatever spells you want to use, would be a lot easier for players to understand, and function the exact same way.
I know this video is 3 years old, but THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS!! My friends started a D&D club and I started watching videos to try to learn the game, but this one not only explained things the most effectively, but the most entertainingly. I swear I'm rewatching this just to hear a "proverbial pounding in p*rnographic proportions" and "let's put a PEEN in that" over and over. Now I've smoothly started playing the game thanks to you! This video quickly got me into the game and gave me a ton of laughs!!🤣❤

The people who don't, on the other hand, are the ones who are trying to get into DND but don't quite understand it yet. These guides have honestly been lifesavers, and I think this one is the most useful out of all of them. The disclaimer at the start seems least relevant to this video, since as far as I can tell it's all-encompassing and accurate except that one missing part about saving throws
Prediction: Jo will talk about how the Inspiration section is never used. EDIT: In my defense, the fact that he didn't bring it up only further supports my statement.
@@suprememario7957 yup. "d(X)" is the die type (like a d6/cube, or a d4/triangular pyramid), and the number in front is the number of dice. So, 8d6 is 8 of the six-sided dice rolled and added together.

Thank you thank you thank youuuuu for this.
Having played Dungeons and Dragons since second edition when I was 5 years old, I personally enjoy JoCat explaining the game to me like I'm a foolish mortal wombat. This isn't sarcasm, I love this series.
14:40 just to let you know, he’s the opener. he’s funny, but he’s not why we stay man, don’t let it get to you too much. Also it’s like the last 10th of a second in 14:40, it’s quick but if you manage to go frame by Fran you can see it
Crap Guides are fun and all, but we’re staying because of the person with the creative talent to make the Crap Guides and so much more. And don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the Crap Guides. I just know that there’s so much more to be seen and a genuinely kind and talented person behind the Crap. We love you man, try not to beat yourself up.
@@deadersurvival4716 nah, shipping is just saying 2 ( or more) characters are in a relationship, when it's not explicity in cannon. There's a ton of shipping for Zuko and Katara for A:TLA and they've certainly met (and are a better fit than Aang and Katara, but what do I know)
My brother and I picked up D&D at a toy/board game shop for his birthday, and we’ve referred to these videos when we first made our characters. Safe to say I have the smoothest of smooth brains cause I instantly forgot about what the attack bonus was/did, so one game I threw it on to my damage roll and instantly gained +5 damage instead of +3 to my d20 roll. Safe to say I’ve fixed that for now. Oh shit, my attack bonus should be +6 due to my proficiency’s.
This is legitimately the most helpful video I came across when first learning to play D&D, and now over a year later I still come back and watch it just to enjoy the experience.
The frame of JoCat being overshadowed by JoCrap makes me sad. Jo, no matter what you upload, i love you, not the stinky wiggler man. Your talented and so lovely and i hope you have a good day.
Jo, if the long-head dude was your entire channel I wouldn’t have stayed, the wholesome and hardworking dude behind it is what makes this channel good 👌 14:40
Anytime I try to explain D&D to a new person, I link them to this video. Thank you so much for everything you did for us, JoCat. I hope you are happy and safe.
14:40 I can't speak for everyone, but even though the wiggler head is why I found the channel it's the creator behind it why I stayed. Planning on being around regardless of how this series or the rest of your content ends up changing.

Unfortunately, that's exactly what it's portraying. Everyone is talking about and laughing at everything "JoCrap" and the Crap Guides do. Meanwhile, not much attention is paid to JoCat's other works and videos. He even points that out in one, or two of his older videos.
You dont know how much I appreciate this. I needed this so much because character stats have always scared me. I'm pretty new to DnD. I've only played twice and those two times the stats both confused and scared me. The DM basically held my hand on both occasions in terms of stats which was good because it helped me but bad because I still couldn't learn stats properly with the spoon feeding and hand holding. I've watched several videos on how to understand this but yours is my favorite one so far. Its waaay more entertaining to watch and very simplified to someone like me who only understands numbers in baby language. I understood it much easier watching you and had a good laugh while at it. This is titled as a crap guide but it's far from it and made me understand more than most of the serious videos I watched explaining this. I know you might not be able to read this but thank you so much for this.
I hope the fact I actually came to learn to do it properly because it was the first thing that popped up when I searched for a guide to character sheet (with the most views btw) makes you happy
"Hey you kinda forgot to write your backstory." "FUC" Hearty laugh at that Jo, thank you! This must have taken a very long time to put together, the effort is clear to see :)
Honestly, if you use an app like D&D beyond, it will walk you through all of what this video covers step by step. It’s super useful for creating a character and then using it to keep track of attacks and spells. There’s even spots in there for notes and backgrounds details!
Just do what my dad did, a few spells to pick from if you're a wizard, a basic attack if you're a martial class, armor class and health, no death saves, you are "dead" until someone heals you, and ask what kinda character they wanna be and make the sheet for them.
"Many are intimitated by this mighty thingy's magnificence, but mourn em we shall not, cuz they be weak ass bitches." MY BROTHER. What a perfect delivery and straight to the point speaking the brute and honest language of Truth and Facts. is like I listen to me explaining it. man I subbed to the channel and you got yourself a new friend. If you ever need me, let me know. Salute from Greece.
My party was dissing electrum and I had exactly 5 silver pieces on me, so I roleplayed going to the bank just to switch out five silver pieces for an electrum piece, and then gave it to the adopted waterdeep children (Jenks, Squiddly and Nat) of the party member who was talking about how redundant electrum was just to see his sheer look of disapproval.
All of my characters carry at least 1 electrum piece from chargen onward. I like to see if it ever comes up, and if it doesn't, it's my lucky gold/silver keepsake.
"Because if you don't and just so happen to cast FIVE mage hands per day..." Anyone with the mage hand cantrip can cast it five times per day. It's a cantrip.
I know this is meant to be satire but I genuinely send this to all my new (and new-ish) players because it explains like 90% of character creation really clearly and it’s way more engaging than just me talking. Thank you JoCat!
@Christopher Bronson yeah I normally watch everything on 1.5x, a minute in I realized I wasn’t processing any of it, too fast for me lol. Super funny though

Of all the Crap Guides, this one feels the most like a condescending parent trying to teach their kid algebra. I'm not sure how to feel about it. Also, jokes aside, don't think I missed that frame at 14:40. We may like JoCrap, but he wouldn't exist without you. If you stopped making these, I may not speak for everyone, but just know at least I'd stick around, and I'm fairly certain there are others who are with me in that.
I think my favorite things JoCat has put out are his longer form video essays, like "So you wanna make a Pokemon," and then, of course, Drunk JoCat Plays Mario Party! Wholesome AF.
Regarding the first part of your comment... I feel it's pretty spot on. Seriously, DnD 5e has basics maths. The fact that people with over 5/6 sessions of game can't recall their Attack Bonus is beyond me. Sure, you can forget some modifiers here and there or don't know exactly all skills (to this, I keep forgetting about Deception. I am an oldschool Shadowrun guy and that's "Bluff" or "Con" for me) but don't tell me that you built an archer Figther and you still need me to tell you that you add your proficiency bonus to your dexterity, for crying out loud
We also overestimate crap guide popularity. They have millions of views but how many are repeat viewings? His new destiny video has 100k and that’s still pretty good.
Awww. That last frame is so sad. :( I've recently started going through all your videos from the very beginning and everything you've put out has been fantastic. Currently on overly edited hollow knight and I've absolutely been loving it. We seriously appreciate all the work you do and I hope you can see that. Much love.
Stealing this place here to agree with you Jack. Not sure how serious the picture is, but having it be in the very very last frame (It was super hard to see even with using period and comma on the keyboard) makes me think it's something that has been bothering JoCat. So instead of saying nothing I'd rather be better safe than sorry: JoCat, don't be afraid of thinking you'll have to act like a certain persona in order to feel accepted by your community. We love ya for what you do, but also for who you actually are. The character is fun, it's part of the style of video of course! But never think that you're stuck with it, do you want you want to do. We as your community got you fam.

You know, this video was my first real introduction to dnd, about 6 months later and I am 5 months through my first campaign and having a blast! Funniest thing is that if this video had been more “average” I probably wouldn’t have actually gotten into dnd because of how complicated it seems, but this video just made it seem so fun, and funny that I had to try it at least once.
I love these! They're like the "For Dummies" books had a child with asdf; they explain things well enough for "small smooth brains" (or people completely new to the game) to understand, but they say it in pop culture references and what I call "you're a horrible person" humor. Great job!
I know the pain, I'm running a Rogue/Bard/Warlock Tiefling with an Instrument of the Bard and a Rod of the Pact Keeper.... So that is Warlock Spell Slots, Bard Spell Slots, Bardic Inspiration, Racial once a day spells, Insturment of the Bard once a day spells. Different DC, disadvantages and Casting Attack Rolls depending which list spells come from and whether they are charms or not.... And that is only 3 classes... not all of them. As you may guess I have built a character sheet from scratch..
@@blackjack2526 I started with D&D 2.5. Go look up THACO and then we'll see who got off easy, lol. Pathfinder is, basically, 3.5. "Mage bullets" make WAY MORE SENSE than a slot. Slot sounds like something to be filled.
I'm 17 tho and got this from D&D videos on youtube, so might not be 100% accurate.
yes. filled. maybe with your SPELL?
... I vote for it to simply be retooled into "mana".

I just couldn't afford to switch to yet another system so I jumped ship when WoTC brought out 4E. I've been sailing the seas of high adventure with Paizo (pathfinder) ever since. I know tons of 5E players and have been one on occasion - but I DM and predominantly play, Pathfinder/3.5.
If D&D is Windows then Pathfinder is Linux: a whole lot harder to understand, but once you do you can do ANYTHING
I have come back to this video so many time over the last few years. Every time I've had to make a new character sheet (or remake one lol) I inevitably forget something like how to calculate spell save DC and it is so much more fun to have an excuse to rewatch this video than to look it up in the Parking Himbo :)
14:34 that extra effort animating "FUCK" really got me
I knew it, he actually has wiggler head under that mask
"I call this sexual position, the flop."
Everybody do the flop!
“Take 2d6 bludgeoning damage. Also, roll for performance.”
Reminder: Many thrown weapons, despite being used in a ranged way, still use strength when being thrown
It’s cause it’s not tryna throw it fancily you’re trying to throw it far instead of having go C’CHUNK on your pinky toe.
I mean, have you ever hefted a javelin? Shit's heavier than it looks.
Out of all the guide videos I’ve watched this is literally the only one I could follow n understand
