At 59 years - I had both of my hands operated on and now have full extension. Lucky for me - I'm a surgical technologist and "hand picked" my surgeon. It was a bit painful to recover from but, well worth it!

Yes, I am of Scottish ancestry, and one of the tales was that a Norse prince shipwrecked on the isle of Lewis, and became our great great grandfather. I thought this story fascinating and quaint , until my Father got severe Dupuytren's contracture in both hands. This required surgery to fix. Since then I have a propensity to raid places and wear a hat with horns. Also have Swedish blood.

I went to my GP because I’d noticed some funny little lumps in my palms. I’d never heard of Dupytrens Contracture before. I was in my 40’s/50’s then. Fortunately for me , apart from a bit of an exaggerated ‘bowl’ in the palms and curve to the little fingers my hands have stayed pretty much the same and I’m 87 now! This is the first time I’ve seen any info or helpful videos on the subject, so thank you - really appreciate it. 👍❤️😁

My Doctor told me that I had this 'Vikings disease' a couple of years ago. At the time I thought, well if you're going to have a disease, at least this one has a cool name!. I then had a DNA test. My dad was from Essex; and what do you know, I'm 25% Scandinavian. I have since read the Vikings popped over to Essex around 1000 years ago. Now it all makes sense!

I left mine too long, until it was bent at 90 degrees thanks to a doctor who didn't know what he was talking about.
I eventually had the fasciectomy it did straighten the finger out to about 15 degrees, I was told it wouldn't be a total success and if it returns as it's a one off operation due to scar tissue then only amputation is left, fortunately it's not got any worse in the last 20 years since it was done.

Mine is quite minor in the center of my palm, pointing almost straight at my middle finger, and is causing no issues and has not changed in about 3-4 years now. I feel lucky! I am 26 yrs old and not of Nothern European decent but I am fully Southern European (Half Serbian, Half Maltese) and I got diagnosed with dupuytrens around last October. I got this condition after I have punched a wall and fractured my hamate bone and the 4/5 finger knuckles. As a resulf of trauma I got the Dupuytrens condition. As I noticed the lumps on my hand I went to visit a physiotherapist who referred me to do an ultrasound to confirm the condition. Since its in the early stages I am currently taking care by grip strenghtening, finger/hand palm stretching, dipping my hand in hot water with dead sea salt, overnight castor oil pack and vitamin E oil. Also I am reducing alcohol and cigarettes intake as I was drinking lots and lots of alcohol (which honestly I think flared this condition) hopefully if I keep it under control by doing the mentioned treatment I will not get any severe contractures. A weird condition but I guess I m paying for my anger management issues too. Never will punch a wall again.

I developed this in my right hand. It remained ignored by my GP. Then it started locking, and finally it locked tight. So after 2 days I was sent to A&E by the GP. They tried to take Xrays but it was too tightly curled to image. So they gave me gas and tried to straighten it, breaking my finger in the process. Eventually i had surgery after the broken finger healed. Had a simple procedure been carried out at the outset...... a lot of pain & cost might have been avoided. So dont be fobbed off, like I was.

It's very strange that I saw this video in my list today as just a few days ago I went to see my pain specialist and as i was waiting in the waiting room a woman politely asked me why I had my hand wrapped. I explained that I had a chronic viral condition in the palm of my hand (herpetic whitlow) and then asked her why she was curious about it. She showed me that she had a condition which is called Dupuytrens and I didn't understand what she said as I'd never heard of it before. She was nice to explain to me what she was experiencing and showed me that she had had surgery on her palm because of the severity of the contractures. Even after her surgeries she had lumps at the base of almost every finger on her hand and her fingers were beginning to bend again. She looked to be between 60-70 years old. It seemed as though she had been through quite a lot and I truly felt great sympathy for her. I'm happy to say that although I have quite a lot of Scandanavian ancestry, my great grandmother was born in Norway, I do not have Dupuytrens contracture nor does anyone else in my family (that I'm aware of), whew!

Thank you for such a clear explanation of the problem and the options available to treat this condition. I developed this in my mid 50's and saw a hand surgeon who basically told me to go away and stop wasting his time! My GP was not able to give me such a clear explanation (which is why she refered me to the surgeon) and simply called it "viking hand" and said it would not trouble me until I was much older. I am now in my mid 60's and it has not progressed very much at all. I regularly massage the area and do stretching exercies to keep it as flexible as possible. I've had this for about 25 years on both hands, more severe on my right hand just below the middle finger, I do daily exercises by pushing my hand against the wall and so far so good, I'd say I have a 15-20 degree bent on said finger, stable after many years. Fun to find out about the Viking hand and northern Europe. Thanks! 👍

Hi! A newly subscribed DC sufferer, although it doesn't "hurt" as such but it can be uncomfortable at times. I was fortunate to do Active Ageing Australia exercises course & taught stretches & exercises for the over 50's for several years. These were chair based & from the eyebrows down to the toes, literally! I still perform several myself but have not updated my credentials. I will teach them to others if asked, to help with mobility & staying independent for as long as possible.
Thanks for the informative video. I shall watch more of them. I am 70 year old Aussie female (with ancestors from Shetland) & arthritis which DOES HURT. 🙏🥰🦘🦘🦘🦘

I know a lady who had all of these symptoms back in the 1960's. I was a teenager so I remember well when one day she came home from the hospital and they had removed her hand and arm up to the elbow. I reallly didn't know what they called it at that time. I always thought she must have had a tumor at the time but after seeing this come up on many sites, I believe this is what she had. She would have been in her 40's I believe at the time.

Thank you very much for your explanations; it has given me some reassurance. As a pianist, I noticed a nodule in my hand a year ago, but fortunately, my hands remain very flexible, and I have had no issues so far. In Belgium, we have one of Europe’s best hand surgeons who told me that nodules can appear in different places for each person and that mine is in a spot that is unlikely to cause problems. I hope I won’t have any issues, but I will keep monitoring it. It is unfortunate to have this condition, especially since I rely so heavily on my hands and am very anxious about any potential surgery.

She hhas it in both hands and a similar condition in her feet (incredibly painful as she is walking on the nodules). When she was diagnosed i also noticed i was getting a trigger finger. The contractures showed up last year. I immediately reached out to my massage therapist and asked if there were exercises i could do. I do them throughout the day. I wouldn't describe it as painless. Its a deep dull ache that is painful when i first wake up and sometimes causes the rest of my hand to flex too far. That is painful and can take a week or two to heal. I'm glad i know about it early!

In Swedish, it is called "the Viking disease". In my case, one of the last Vikings (Harald III Sigurdsson Hardrada) was my 24th great-grandfather, so that makes a lot of sense. My fingers are bent, yes, but not much, so it is not debilitating, except, when after hard work, it also causes cramps in a muscle/nerve of the forearm just below the elbow (something this fellow forgot to mention). These cramps, at the same time, also lock the fingers in a painful "claw". 🥴 NB: Pharmaceutical pressure bands on the forearms help out in this case.

My Chinese massage therapist called attention to these small lumps on my palms and told me she sees them often on older Scandinavians and if I didn't massage them then my fingers would freeze in a bent position. That was two years ago, and they are completely gone now. I got rid of them by interlocking my fingers and stretching them palms downward. I would repeat this periodically throughout the day until I could no longer feel the "stretch" in the fascia. I still do this as a daily routine. No regrowth detected.

I'm 80. All 4 of my grandparents were immigrants to the United States from Norway. I have recently noticed odd lumpiness in my palm underneath my left ring finger. I'm a folk musician and play guitar quite a lot. For years I have noticed an irritating left hand issue that comes up irregularly. When making chords with my left hand sometimes my ring finger locks up and will not move to the next chord position. It does not occur often, thankfully. Normally I can still move my fingers freely when I'm playing, like I said, the occurence is not frequent. Since over the past year I have been noticing when I touch that left palm that what I thought might be a tendon seems to be hardening. Having watched this interesting video I'm now wondering if this is Dupuytren's Contracture, and also wonder if it is the reason for the occasional frustrataing lockdown of a chord position. Seems like I could have a Viking Hand! I am grateful there is no pain involved for me, and my finger is definitely not contracting.

I haven’t had a formal diagnosis, but all the symptoms mentioned were present, except nodules or cords don’t seem to be prominent. When the condition made its introduction, I was able to bend fingers (2) on both hands in a downward position and they stayed that way until I straightened them by pulling them up. Today, Only the left middle finger has a slight bend. I use a finger splint and do exercises to keep the finger straighter. I have it. I think my mother has it, but she won't let me look at her hands. Sometimes she says she has arthritis, but when pressed, she admits her doctor said it was something else. Then she says I am making everything up. My mother has always had her ownversion of reality.

Myself and 3 of my brothers have DD, but none of my sisters, so is it confined to men only? My surname, originally Oda le Arledekin, is of Norman and Viking origin.

@@thomascoady3782 , I'm a woman, I've had it since I was around 50. I think it is from the stress of supporting a family. I was a single mother of four, three with special needs. The doctor told me it only happens to old Irish men. Yes, it was a hand doctor too. He went on to be worse. I no longer go near doctors.

76yr old female here, my dupuytrens started at age 59, 10 operations on both hands various fingers and joints including repeats, now on the NHS list again for three fingers - (repeats), luckily the recovery time is only a few weeks.

In retrospect, they might have been better doing a dermofasciectomy first time round. That might have reduced the number of procedures you ended up having. I hope you get a good result from the next op. Best wishes.

I have Viking Finger! It sucks! And, some of my kids have it now. I've had 5 surgeries and I'm still battling it. I waited too long. If you are of Viking descendant you will get it. See the doc early, or you'll wish you had. Good luck!

Very interesting and the first time I've had a name applied to something that affected my father from quite a young age. I recall his fingers on one hand being quite deformed when he was in his early 50s.
A funny story related to this was when my father was arranging some car maintenance with a friend who was deaf. My father put up all his fingers to indicate he'd be back at ten o'clock the following day. The deaf mechanic interpreted my father's hand signals as half past eight.
    Thanks,
    Bob

Great story! I can also think of some older people when I was a child, who had this condition but they called it 'segs' and though it was due to hard work.

I have this condition in my left hand. It affects my little and middle fingers. I noticed the lumps many years ago. I had no idea what they meant.
I'm 73. The bent fingers are not terribly extreme, but the middle finger is quite bent. I don't really notice it throughout the day during any activity, so I'll probably just live with it. I do know instances where the injection was used and the doctor performed the straightening, but the condition returned with a vengeance.

Odins Blood! What a great video. I have this condition and will be attending an orthopaedic unit at the local hospital in a few days time. I would say I have an more advanced problem as I can’t lay my palm flat.. if I played a lot of snooker it would be of some use but as I don't these days it’s time to get things sorted. I began to notice these pits in my right hand but this hasn’t advanced a great deal. A pit formed on my left hand a couple of years later and this has progressed to finger bending and I am at the stage of having problems putting my hand in my jeans pockets etc. I also experienced numbing of my finger when I sleep sometimes although not sure that is directly related to this condition.

    • @PhysioMSK
      @PhysioMSK  3 місяці тому +1

Numbness is not normally a symptom but its possible that one of small digital nerve has got tied up in your Dupuytren's tissue. I'm sure they will discuss your options with you next week.

I have the pit type that happens in my seventies on both hands. One hand is a little more than the other hand. Fortunately, it is mildly noticeable. My grandfather on my mother side had it on one hand and probably comes through my father side, too. My father side came trace ancestors back to about 80AD in Scandinavia. Had brown hair and a red beard which is now grey/white.

I had the Surgical Fasciectomy performed on my left hand about six years ago after the condition was affecting my work as an Airline Pilot. I wore a splint for only a few days after surgery, and performed some mild post operative stretching exercises in combination with some olive oil massage. Extra Virgin of course!
A personal family history DNA check has revealed about 10% Nordic ancestry.
Now, at 67 years old, recovery appears to be almost 100%. Being able to take up a guitar again during the Covid downturn was a real delight for me. This benefit has given my Wife something to "enjoy" during our retirement.
Many thanks for your coverage and succinct explanation.

My neighbor and I both same age late 70s-early 80s are descendents from NM onates' colonial Hisp surnamed Spanish. We both have what you described...but she is really bent at right angles on less dominant side of her hand. I am now presenting with D-band on lt side of my palm between little and ring finger...no pain, yet sometimes I wake up with a stiffening of the fingers like trying to "claw." The nodules are very slight on rt hand.
Last year, I fell for the first time and broke my carpals lt hand (fully fell with outstretched hand)..and did not do surgery...the main symptom I had from that was like a "sparking" of electrical pulses for about 5 months, that eventually went away and even more stiffening of the hand at times...but NO pain. I think it's been about 5 years or so that I had first begun to notice the nodules and very minor bands, but still had all mobility.
Thank U for your detailed information and encouragement. My mat gr-grandma had the conditions as u described and my mom n grandma died before age 60. When I wake up unmoveably stiff...I have been and will continue to stretch and press and pull...I will remember to also use a brace as needed.❤

I have this in both hands. One hand started years ago. The other showed up about 6 months ago. My mother was born in Sweden. I have had what looks like the same thing in the arch of one foot. Is this possible? It’s been there for about twenty years. I’m 78. A hand surgeon told me four years ago that I had Dupuytrens and that jt was a Viking disease and I should call him if the fingers ever started to bend. Your video is much appreciated. I learned a lot more about Dupuytrens. Thank you so much.

    • @PhysioMSK
      @PhysioMSK  2 місяці тому

You're very welcome. I'm glad it was helpful. The equivalent condition on the foot is called 'ledderhosens disease' or 'plantar fibroma'. It tends to behave differently to Dupuytren's because it doesn't contract and cause bent toes. Because of this, and the fact that only a small proportion of Dupuytren's patient have lumps in the foot, we think its probably an unrelated condition - but cant be sure.
      Best wishes. Stephen.
