Ryan, super helpful video my friend. Thanks! As you mentioned at the end, a video showing how you programmed these things in the Editor would be wonderful IF you've got time down the road.
All sounds sensible to me. Not miles off what I do, but with a few different changes. Maybe I should do a video of mine as this has inspired me. I only have a vid of my big ridiculous do-anything board on YT. But most of the time I’m using my downsized mastermind LT + voodoo lab pedal switcher board (which is close enough to this to be comparable). My biggest issue was going from 16 buttons + 8 dedicated loop buttons, to 7 buttons (with 4 dedicated loop buttons) and not losing too many options or confusing myself.
Thanks. Great video! I’d love to use the double tap and hold features on my PBC6 but can’t seem to find a video or manual showing me how to set it up. Would you have a link?
It should do that automatically when you’re using a setlist with song names in it! If not, there may be a checkbox on the general settings page in the editor software on the computer!
It actually ended up giving me problems - for some reason it wouldn’t change my delay and/or reverb patches back to the first song so I had to stop using it. Couldn’t figure it out!
@@kiesshauer it worked as you said it will. Thanks so much! I also set up the second press to send me to another preset same as you. Thank you so much for sharing your setup !
Just found your channel and subscribed...helpful vid, I just am getting ready to setup my PBC. If you don’t mind sharing, curious what you signal chain/set up is running stereo with the fx outside of the PBC? Are you running them through an fx loop?. Many thx in advance!
There’s a board demo I did last year where you can see and hear the chain if you want! But no I just run straight into the front since I run pretty clean amps. I hear fx loop can help if you run a dirtier or heavy amp....but stereo to fx loops sounds like a pain haha
I'm having a very hard time with mine. I think what's really thrown me for a loop is that the manual for the PBC/6X is good, but there's no in depth manual for the computer editor itself. I also don't like how the MIDI CC and PC numbers are sort of fixed in regards to some devices. Like on the H9. On the H9 itself you can assign any CC number to anything. But on the PBC6X, it's like, "No, this is the CC for this and you cannot change it." Also, it seems the CC numbers are off by 1 unit for every device. I think it's because on the PBC/6X, midi cc messages start counting on 0, but on most of my devices, they start on 1. This is throwing me off as well as I have to remember to select one number down from the number I actually want. I've been playing around with a Morningstar MC8. The MC8 doesn't have the loops, as it's only midi, but in two nights I was able to do so much more than I've been able to do on the RJM in two months. Like for example, I was able to set a button toggle to switch my expression pedal on my H9 from expression (hot knob) to output volume. I did that in 15 minutes. On the RJM unit, I still haven't been able to do volume, just expression. It seems like the CC or PC numbers that I need for output volume via expression are not even there. I cannot go that high. And if I assign export volume to CC 17, which is expression, it doesn't work. The software isn't very intuitive. I don't know. I'm really disillusioned with it. Bummer because I really had high hopes for it.
FWIW: The CCs are only 'fixed' if you use the Mastermind's built-in presets for each device. Like if you set the H9 up as a 'Generic Device' instead of using the H9 dropdown, you can choose whatever you want CC-wise. I think they just do that for every device with factory settings to make it easier for most people. On the 'Devices' page you can use the 'MIDI offset' option to fix that 0 or 1 as the starting number issue you were talking about! Happy to answer any other questions you have about the Mastermind (assuming I know the answers, haha)
@@kiesshauer Hi, great that you mentioned this. The other day I actually did that. I removed the preset for H9 and went generic. This is great as I wasn't liking the preset CCs for it. They're fine for my Strymon pedals, but I guess RJM's mapping for the H9 is based on older Eventide firmware which has since been improved. I don't remember if my comment about MIDI offset as due to CC or PCs. I know by default H9 PCs are one number below their actual preset. For example, 0 is preset 1, and offsetting it in the editor will deal with this. However, my comment might have been due to an offset I had on CCs. Turns out it was a firmware error in the H9 itself. I returned it to factory settings and flashed it back to the latest FW and the problem went away.
You said you are running stereo, are you running stereo into the PBC6? If so what custom cables are you using? I am trying to set up a stereo rig thru the PBC6 (just got it), all I can find are big bulky stereo plug ends
Nah, my stereo effects are outside the PBC - just delay and reverb. I think only two or three of the loops are stereo capable though (5 & 6 maybe) so you definitely couldn’t run stereo INTO a pbc. You just have to split to stereo at your first stereo output pedal (usually modulation, delay, or reverb). Let me know if that doesn’t make sense. :)
Thanks for the reply. I just bought the Mastermind PBC so I am working out my set up. Planning on going Comp (Origin Effects) > CB Brothers overdrive > timmy > HX Stomp (Amp Sim into Stereo) > Timeline > blue Sky. Still doing my research on all the programming of the PBC, thanks for your video, I love seeing the different ways people are programming the PBC. To be honest it’s way more in-depth then I thought!
Really cool vid, thanks man! ? I've been sort've an amateur MIDI user for a while, basically using my midi/looper to switch to presets on my pedals (big sky, DD500, etc) but recently I got a pedal (Jackson - Golden Boy) that doesn't accept presets, only control changes. Could a pedal like this work with a mix of preset accepting pedals, and CC only pedals? Or would I need to get a splitter or something? Also, I like that trick with the TRAILS button you have (to end/transition songs)... is that button linking to a preset on your reverb or is that a CC function just basically maxing out the decay? Thanks a ton man! Great vid, and well timed for a novice like me as I dig into this midi world!
Yo! Yes, this will totally do what you're talking about. I had a golden boy for awhile and the Mastermind is awesome for controlling it (along with everything else!) Every preset can send whatever CC / PC messages you want as well as turning loops on and off...it's amazing. For the reverb, yeah I just did a preset. You could totally do the same thing with a CC command if you wanted to though!
Hey brotha! I had a quick question! I getting my pbc6 this week and I have a similar setup in terms of having a nemesis and ventris setup with midi. When you’re on the loops page and you can turn on and off which pedals you want to save as a preset, are you able to scroll through the nemesis’ or ventris’ saved presets and save it as a preset to the pbc? For example, I don’t have the ventris in the loop, but if I want to save a drive (loop 3) and one of my stored presets in this ventris ( stored preset 2) am I able to do that from the loops page? Thanks man!
Hey! Yeah, you can definitely do that. You would probably just make a couple buttons that will scroll up and down through presets on whichever device -- that'll let you select which one you want, and then when you press Store on the mastermind it'll remember for that preset.
Ryan Kiesshauer thanks man!! One more question, do you know if I can recall different program changes on the ventris and nemesis at once, such as preset 1 on one pedal and preset 3 on another? I used to be able to do that on the Strymon pedals but wasn’t sure if that was possible with source audio
@@andeeee6050 Yep, all of that is possible! On any given preset you can recall whatever; so I have preset 1 on the Ventris and preset 85 on the Nemesis both come up on the same preset. The only thing you can't do is send multiple CC messages to the same unit -- for some reason most pedals don't play well that way, source audio among them. But you can get around that pretty easily but just setting different presets for whatever you want.
Ryan Kiesshauer thanks brotha! Would you ever be down to do a Skype walkthrough on the pbc? I would pay you for it! It seems you have a setup that would work very similar to mine so that would be beneficial if possible! Thanks!
Did you do the POG midi mod yourself or did you have someone else do it? I’ve been debating doing it myself but the only part I’m unconfident in is drilling the enclosure.
I see that right angle USB plug. Haha. Where did you get that? Are you able to have the angle go straight down without it being too close to the top of the board? Oh, and where did you get that 2-button switch?
Is that first preset (WBLY > 1 Main) for “Wanna Be Like You” by River Valley Worship?
Haha, I think it was, yeah. Good eye. :)
Yass!! I’m setting up my PBC6 today!

Great Vid! I just got this unit! Question, I've created a setlist page, but how do you get the sets to be on the buttons?
Love the walkthrough. Where did you get the small two button switcher that would play nice with the rjm?
I want to say I got it from this1smyne...but I think he closed down. :(
Thanks. Great video! I’d love to use the double tap and hold features on my PBC6 but can’t seem to find a video or manual showing me how to set it up. Would you have a link?
If you watch RJMs “Mastering the Mastermind” series on UA-cam he definitely covers it in there!
Where did you get the external switch I love that idea, I just got my pbc 6x and have no idea how to use it, I might have to email you
Go for it! The “mastering the mastermind” series on YT that the guy who makes them does would help you a lot as well.
Great video! How did you get it to display the song name no matter the preset? It will display the page name for me.
It should do that automatically when you’re using a setlist with song names in it! If not, there may be a checkbox on the general settings page in the editor software on the computer!
@@kiesshauer I’ll check. Thanks!
@@kiesshauer Also question. How did you get it to jump to the beginning of a setlist? I think I would utilize that function very frequently...

How do you set up the PBC 6X to have your front page in song mode and not in preset mode?
I think all you have to do is build a set list and load it and it just works…let me know if that isn’t it
@@kiesshauer very new to this, when you say “upload it” you mean “write changes to device”?
Yep - my fault for using the wrong term. :)
