Caught in a whiteout on the summit of Weissmies (4,017m)

  • A final summit push with an unexpected weather front. The final steps to the Weissmies summit had us in a complete white out.
This was the third and fourth day on my trip to the Swiss Alps, having previously stayed at the Weissmies hut and summited Lagginhorn.
My aim was to go from Saas-Almagell, a little town close to the more popular Saas-Fee, to the Almagellerhut, from which you can access the mountain through its Southern Ridge.
I started the route alone, having planned to solo Weissmies (4,017 m), but through a fortunate turn of events, I met a climbing partner along the way who I became friends with.
At the summit of Weissmies I saw a weather abnormality that I've only heard of before.
This was a lenticular cloud. An occluded front that happens when a faster moving cold front catches up with a warm front.
This made it difficult to have a summit panorama with the surrounding Dom, Weisshorn, Matterhorn and Monte Rosa that you could usually spot, but nonetheless the weather event made up for it.
I met a lot of great Alpinist climbing all sorts of different routes along the way, and in this video, I also interviewed a few people to help you guys better understand why mountaineers do what they do.
I hope you enjoyed this 4-day adventure. Definitely more to come!

did this route last month i made a bivi on the swischenbergerpas. had amazing clear weather... and the ridge was dry. only had a scare at night when there was a hugely active thundercloud in the valley (we saw constant flickering outside the tent and thought we were in it) very fun experience!

this must have been an amazing experience. Also, your input as to why you climb, mindfulness, living in the moment, that's it. Thanks bro.

Hey mate, nice video. Myself and 3 friends are staying at Weissmieshutte 1 night on June 21st - the idea has always been to hike Lagginhorn the following morning (starting around 4am i guess?), but we have no guide and this season has been incredibly snowy (seems like it may still be snowing....).
Any suggestions for the lagginhorn in these conditions? Otherwise, can we hike Weissmies from the hut instead, and if yes would it be easier than lagginhorn?

At the summit you said “that was difficult”. What were the difficulties? It looked like you managed it pretty easy?

Awesome video , one question , if both the Peaks could be accessed by the Weimesse hut what was the reason for going all the way back down to the Valley ? Just curious as I’m planning to do both next month

If you approach Weissmies via the Weissmies hut you have to do the mountain via the normal route, meaning you have to cross the glacier. I soloed both routes and didn't plan on being roped to anyone, avoiding glaciated routes. This is why I approached Weissmies via the South-East ridge, it doesn't cross over a glacier. From memory, I think I read that this year there's been some bad shifts in the Weissmies glacier and people can't actually access it via the Weissmies hut anymore, only from the Almagellerhutte, definitely worth checking before you go;)
