This was 1986, and I could fill up the gas tank for less than $20 most of the time. I found out later that the fine for stopping on railroad tracks at the time was $40. I doubt that what the cop did was legal, but I think he told the guy that he could get a traffic ticket and pat the state $40 or he could pay the kid behind you $40 right now. Legal or not, I liked getting paid.
