I think with a math degree it’d also be just as acceptable to get a minor where you can learn skills to apply your math skills better. Some programming skills, or some business skills is also just as good. It will probably cost you less and take you less time also, depending on your program and all that

Depending on how deep you want to go, I would say that a Maths major is anywhere from above average difficulty to the most difficult degree (I would argue that the most difficult mathematics courses, especially the graduate level ones, are on the same level as the most nipicky engineering courses or theoretical physics courses. But a lot of programs allow you skimp on the more pure courses, so a math major doesn't have to be too hard).
Due to overlap, Math and Physics is fairly doable, but basically only makes sense if you are eyeing grad school. Math + Econ. and Math + Comp. Sci. are probably the most common combinations that makes sense both for getting a job out of undergrad and for going to grad school. If you want Math + Stats, you can probably just minor in one of them.
~A graduated Math + Chem. double major (only makes sense for grad. school, lol, but I liked both subjects a lot).

Gosh I wish double majoring in math and stats was an option for me XD There are so many overlapping classes that would have made this an easier double major than others. But my university knew this and so it wasn't allowed. When you become a math major, you have to pick a subplan of pure maths or applied maths/stats. You can't pick both. My school really makes sure that double majoring is nearly impossible if not incredibly difficult to do. So sad.

  • @anthonytran141

Some schools offer Math/Econ as a single joint major. It is important to note that Graduate level Economics are very math heavy, so you generally need a lot of Math coursework to prepare for graduate school. Basically what I'm saying is that a BA in Econ alone will not prepare you for grad school. You either need to double major or minor in math.

As some one who double majored in math and history, I would definitely encourage would be math majors to diversify their skill set. Probably not with history (though I definitely stand out with my background), but being on the top half of that average salary requires offering more than other math majors. This could simply be being the best at math, but good written communication skills and a knack for storytelling can really provide value to an organization which is unsure about what exactly mathematical analysis means for them.

@@issaissa4974 Well, since you asked, my first thought is that's a great compliment. Just remember, its not the major that provides the value, but the talent it might represent. So, you better be able to showcase your math knowledge in interviews and come across as a clear communicator. There is also some risk that hiring managers might think you can write fiction, but not business style communication, so be prepared to discuss how your major has trained you discuss complex topics in a concise and clear manner.

I know this is 2 years ago but this is for those that will see this comment.
      1. is a natural science but Mathematics is used to describe the phenomenon's. In a way Physics could be seen as an applied mathematics to the natural world. The things Physicist work on are outside of pure maths. They may work on Condensed Matter with microchips, Bio Physics, Laser/optic tech for Defense contractors, or research on Fussion energy for some examples.

    • @omarfish8940
      @omarfish8940 9 місяців тому

Theoretical physics is a natural science as it can only be used to solve problems in other natural sciences (i.e biology, physics, or chemistry). Theoretical/Pure mathematics is a math degree because it can only be used to solve problems in other math degrees (math and statistics).
Computer Science is a technology degree because theoretical computer science can only be used to solve problems in other technology degrees, however, this is actually starting to change and you're seeing more and more theoretical computer sciences become much closer to Mathematics than anything else. But for now, especially at the undergrad level it's a technology degree.
I would personally not advise double majoring in those 2 subjects unless you are in one of the following groups:
1: Wanting to get a doctoral degree in physics (as once you're done with that and you begin conducting original research you need an extensive background in comp sci so you can create models of your research before you start it for a more accurate hypothesis)
2: Really, REALLY love both degrees. Most jobs are honestly fine with one or the other degree since comp sci is often too theoretical for most jobs and physics is even more so. Jobs are hiring you because if you have one of those degrees you're probably smart and know how to code.
Generally, getting 2 STEM degrees isn't the most useful thing in the world unless maybe if you're a pure math major? Since once you get to the level of maths introduced for pure maths it becomes much closer to philosophy than anything computational.
If you really love both physics and comp sci, a much better option might be to get a degree in "applied" mathematics and then see which fields you want to go more in depth in. Applied maths will give you a much, MUCH, broader skillset in every field and oftentimes will include all of the knowledge needed to get a degree in physics, computer science, biology, chemistry, engineering, and more. The reason why it doesn't take as long as those majors is because applied math usually doesn't teach you the derivations, proofs, and concepts behind each of those majors.
An applied math major or its cousins: engineering physics or engineering mathematics are pretty much the closest you can get to a "sampler" of every STEM major and it's viewed very highly for jobs that ask for interdisciplinary knowledge that might not be typically taught to the average person with a major (example: Bioinformatics requires knowledge of both biology and statistics, however, most bio majors and most stats majors don't really take that many classes from the other's pool)

I faced a lot of prejudice in the industry by hiring managers, only the ones that wanted to get things done gave me a chance, most of them thought I would ask for a lot of money or take their jobs. Double majoring in math and physics isnt that hard, I did it in 5 years. All the lower division math courses overlap and the math major is not a lot of courses, it is only about 70-80% of the physics course load. The physics major was intensive though. Very much understandable to as how double-majoring would open a lot more doors to potential career paths rather than obtaining a degree in just 1 specific major. Now I will be majoring in Mathematics at Concordia University (Nebraska) this coming fall semester and I know minors are no where near as recognizable as a major however, would what I choose to minor in paired with Mathematics (Math major + Marketing minor) help me rather more in specific areas? I guess what I am trying to ask is, would a general employer(s) recognize the area in which I minored in also or do they typically not care about that?.. sorry if I am not wording this in the best way.

I faced a lot of prejudice in the industry by hiring managers, only the ones that wanted to get things done gave me a chance, most of them thought I would ask for a lot of money or take their jobs. Companies that are just maintaining products that are selling because competition is low in their sector will have hiring managers wary of people taking their jobs and paying more for the position. So overqualified becomes an issue. I had the most success in academia and engineering consulting because your credentials is what they value, no egotistic hiring manager career blocking you, because credentials gets them more clientele.

    • @matthewxiong5453

I don't really recommend it. Engineers already have great job opportunity (because engineering is one the most sought after skillsets in the market currently) and often develop business skills on the job. Double majoring in engineering and business would be redundant. Plus, engineering is one of the most difficult majors there is, so double majoring alongside it would be killing yourself mentally. Electrical engineering is probably the best engineering degree at the moment.

@@jahhaj1020 Most likely have to teach yourself the more complex skills, but math skills are just super adaptable whenever it comes to programming. For example, Structures, matrices, logic, and tons of other skills you learn in mathematics. And while it doesn’t 100% teach you how to program, those skills are uses in programming all of the time. So lots of skills you use, especially for math heavy software development such as machine learning, is used a ton. Just a math degree alone can do it.
And while a business degree won’t help you in a technical way, companies love people who have business minds. In the long run, software engineers are hired to make the company money. Not just engineers. But almost all jobs that is the case. Having even a base knowledge of understanding how the business side of things, along with a technical skill such as programming, the skills are irreplaceable. It’s one of the reasons why a degree such as Information Systems is so valued. It’s half a business, half a technical degree. Business skills + a skill whether that be programming or something else that will make a company money is a great combination. So while a business degree might not exactly help you in your job, a business degree or just business skills in general can really help get an interview. And can even get you a job in some roles.

People are saying research, but engineers do research too. For chemical engineering, our research overlaps a lot with biology, chemistry, and physics. Mechanical and electrical have a lot of physics overlap. Not sure about anything else, but my point is that most research is interdisciplinary and engineers are doing that same research as scientists
