I just returned to learning piano again after almost 40 years of quitting it. Aging makes you think a lot about your past decisions. I’m so glad I found this website and this teacher. Finally learning this piece is one of the greatest joys of my life. I can’t wait until I can finally play this. Beethoven is eternal.
I returned to the piano. Took lessons 60 years ago bought a very nice Roland FP-10 in December- taking private lessons- and what a wonderful (though tedious) process. Good for you. Let’s cheer each other 😊😊😊
i’ve been practising this piece since february, when i got my piano, and i just played the entire song for the first time and i’ve never felt so gutted by a piece. no wonder it’s a classic
I love listening to this song when I’m feeling down. So moody! My Piano teacher challenged me to give this a try even tho I am a beginner. Started on Monday, May 13, 2024. I’ll check back in when I master this! Thank you so much for sharing.
Same! Although I'm cheating a bit and playing the e minor, shorter version. Still really enjoyable and challenging. I'd like to do the full version one day..
Thank so much for putting these videos and the sheet music up for free. It’s a huge help for those of us struggling financially but still want to play piano. With rising costs of groceries and everything else I have had to really watch my spending. So thank you thank you!!
You are a joy to watch and learn from. I’m an adult beginner but I can read music and I’ve been teaching myself this piece. Not many classical pieces that are accessible to beginners, and an even bigger bonus is that this is one of my favorites. Thank you!
I finally did it , i can finally play moonlight sonata with a consistent performance, thank you so much , I have spent over two months watching this video every day
What a wonderful video. As someone who is completely self taught, this is the one piece I can play reasonable well. As you demonstrate, it is best to learn this measure by measure and practice, practice practice! I would encourage anyone new to the piano to put in the effort and learn this pice. Once mastered it will impress anyone who listens and give you the confidence to move on the more difficult works. I'm glad you explain the double sharp question which took me ages to decipher when I first started learning this piece. I know it follows the rules of musical notation but it would make life a lot easier if the composer wrote the actual note. Beginners would then find it easier but then i'm sure Beethoven didn't write it music for the musically uneducated like me!
Lisa is a “teacher’s teacher”. Her love of Beethoven fills my room & mind every time she teaches. When will she be recognized as the national treasure she is? Without good music to hear, you might forget to listen to your own heartbeat. There’s no need to though. Listening to the wonderful Beethoven’s music is the equivalent to hearing a post-doctoral studies course inside your own brain. Your life is more joyful now from having heard it.
Moonlight Sonata 1st Movement is the first music piece and the only piece I can play with the piano. I just discovered this incredible video, after I have already learnt the whole piece. However, it may sound weird, but when I watched this video, it was the first time I realized the pianist's hands, fingers and fingertips could move in such a graceful and charming way, which made me fall in love with. My hands and fingers are still rigid while playing. I am wondering whether Lisa has the same tutorial for the 2nd movement and even the 3rd. I am now trying to learn the 2nd movement. Thank you so much. 42:24 Sheer appreciation here!
Happy to have found this tutorial. The way you’ve set this up, you really aren’t leaving any thing out… at least that a novice like me can see. Ty for the thorough nature of your lesson. I’ve only just started playing around to learn piano BECAUSE of this piece. Thank you thank you
I have always adored this masterpiece of classical music, it is the most beautiful thing I can hear and today I came across this video, how wonderful to see how it is executed step by step... now I am more delighted than before... Congratulations
Like so many others that have found your site, I am so happy I did. You are so cheerful and joy to learn from. I love how you celebrate all the little steps in learning. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Decided to start learning how to play piano properly, could always play a few chords here and there and this is one piece my fiancé loves so had to give a go! Love how you break this down into sections for each hand, has really helped me progress quicker than I thought I could, videos are so engaging and make the learning really enjoyable, thank you Lisa!
Thank you very much, you made me play music I thought impossible for a non pianist, your teaching is amazing please don’t stop. Also your enthusiasm is contagious and your tips precious . Thanks again. Pasquale
Amazing tutorial - I've always wanted to play this and now I can! Thank you for making this possible. The feeling of playing this piece is absolutely euphoric ❤
Thank you very much for this tutorial. Appart from the noticeable musical knowledge and skill that you have, it is really to apreciate the positivity and the good vibes you transmit. Really helpful, specially for those of us who are unexperts in this instrument and can get frustrated at some parts. Thank you again and please keep this quality content!
So true, I have been listening to Moonlight Sonata for a few years and thinking of learning it and I have the music and it looks so difficult to play and I didn’t know where to start as I am also learning how to read music; this tutorial I just listened to while driving to work and I can’t wait to get home to start practicing this and other music Lisa has been sharing… ❤❤❤
I just wanted to thank you cause you're the sole reason I started to play Just before this week I didn't know the first thing about music but I saw your video , 7 days to learning piano and I remembered that my dad had a cheap old keyboard piano in the garage and I picked it up then started playing In this week I learned a lot of musics in your channel but I'm having a hard time playing moonlight sonata because when I choose the d sharp that is suited for the first part I can't use my left hand because there is literally no other buttons 😂 I was hoping if you could give me some advice on how to play this masterpiece properly. And also thanks for always teaching in such details
Hi Lisa, thank you so much for this. I am learning to play the Piano with my daughters, I am 47 and they are under 10. I play mostly by memory and my first successful attempt was Chopin's Prelude in E and the tutor has now graduated me to the Moonlight sonata. Again learning to play by memory. how difficult do you think that will be and do you think I can ever learn to play the third movement by memory?
this piano tutorial is simply perfetct, there is everything and also an amazing teacher this specific song was always my favorite from the classical music genre, but since I played the game "my eyes deceive" it gives me a little of trauma, kinda makes me wanna cry, it got a very deeper meaning for me, and now I am trying to learn how to play this one thank you so much for the video
Miss Lisa I just want to say thank you so very much. I wish there were more teachers like you and you are a teacher's teacher. I only wish that there were more teachers like you ma'am God bless best of Wishes Always Teddy! Merry Christmas Miss Lisa😊
I can't believe I googled this today (literally 'Pianote Moonlight Sonata') and here it is uploaded just 3 days earlier! It's a sign!! Now the only problem is that once again you're video is too captivating and you seem like you are having so much fun in it I can't help but get drawn in and end up watching instead of practicing! 6:30 - "This feels really cranky to me" hahahaha I just love it! I could watch these all day and not play a thing, but I mustn't!

Thank you sooooooo much i love this song and i listen to it every morning but with you now im playing it and one of my dreams came true.i didn't believe i can play it i owe you thank youuu
Thank you, Lisa! Been working on this song the past week. It was my favorite classical piece back in the 80's but due to a career change I had to stop playing piano altogether and have only now begun playing it again. Finding it a bit tougher this time around because my fingers are older and don't want to slip between the keys as easily as they once did, but the melody is coming back. I'm determined to "read" it this time and not just memorize it as I did before. That might help me get past the problem of losing my place every time I hit a wrong note. Do you have any secrets to combat that problem? Love your lessons - please keep them coming!
Thank you Super Girl Lisa ! Really grateful ! So many good words shared about you already - thank you very much for what you are doing and for how gracefully you are doing it, not to mention classy professionalism and positive vibe !

Took me about a week to learn the whole thing. Today I am on the last part. I love this piece so much. For anyone with a 61 key keyboard you can play this fully if you have some shortcuts to transpose or upper scale octave down. If not during the F arpeggio just ignore the D sharp (;_;). As a complete noob I feeeel so confident having this in my repertoire. Maybe one day I'll have a full 88 key and I can play the 3rd movement. P.S: I underestimated the last part left hand. This gonna take some time getting used to.
@@hmmmm4193 No. If you have a keyboard you can quick switch an octave. There is an youtube video doing it in 61 keys. It's difficult but possible. Otherwise this is unplayable using a 61 key piano.
Very well put together, thank you!! Was just wondering why your left hand kept on moving towards the front from the keyboard, it was kind of distracting. With this video, I am now sure I have all the right notes and fingering as I cannot read sheet music. I am 71 years old and recently learned Moonlight Sonata by watching youtube especially Arthur Rubinstein's version.
Great free tutorial! I'm always grateful for something as complex as a tutorial for a whole piece completely for free. Are you also interested in teaching the second or even third movement?
Que bella composicion. La aprendí escuchando a un record con Vladimir Horowitz a la edad de 18 y con la partitura. Ahora tengo que aprenderla completamente de nuevo. Muchisimas gracias.
Thank you for making these videos. I am a guitar player my whole life . Always wanted to learn to play piano. You make it easy to understand, and are very fun to learn from.. . I am thankful to have found your channel 🙏
Right?! It's very hard for me to play with both hands and the way she is teaching is helping me so much ♡ I'm playing very slowly but still lol. She is truly a gift ❤️
Thank you so much for recording this piece, I have tried to work on this for over a year, can manage to get through but always get stuck at the section you found difficult, now with your video I can go through it section by section, and see if I’m doing it the right way. So grateful for this.
Play this back at .5 speed. It’s awesome. She sounds like she’s having the best time of her life. I inadvertently found this because I couldn’t keep up.

I started learning a version of this in the wrong key so thanks for this - I've wanted to play it ever since playing Jet Set Willy on the Spectrum / Amstrad home computers in the 80s which had it as the intro theme.
This video is so well produced and edited. Well done! Very nice tutorial. I love this song, and it's the very first I'm learning. I've got until measure 27 covered :)
Hell yeah brother I agree. It was my first piece I tried learning as well, I'm on measure 45, and a few places seemed impossible but don't give up, you'll get there! Thanks so much Lisa and Pianote, couldn't have done it without you.
Nice pace for a self made very little pianist. I love this piece and this is helpful to improve my technique and my knowledge of this Moonlight Sonata. Thank you.
I’ve always learned to play the octaves, when possible of course, with the left hand. Adds a bit of flourish when you add the melodies (and putting the sustain pedal to good use). Might have been because my young teenage hands couldn’t quite reach the full octave with the right hand.
As a child on my first lesson, my piano teacher asked what I hoped to be able to play in the first year, I said this, and he said "No." It sounds simple but it is deceptively complicated. He would have spent the entire year teaching me 1 thing alone so he made the right choice. Beethoven has more complexity and nuance in 4 bars here than I've managed to write in 20 years. You don't have to want to go to Carnegie hall, but you will never get anywhere if you don't practice. :)
I have been working on this piece for 3-4 months now and kinda stuck at the middle part, however your video is very helpful and I hope I could finish learning before 2022 ends.
Started this piece tonight, I'm an advanced beginner. I plan on practicing this everyday just to see how long it'll take me to get it. I'm thinking a year.
