They all also developed a real love for music that extended beyond the role to the point they were still perfectly capable of playing their respective instruments on the 10 year reunion special a decade after the movie came out. Jack was also able to convince Led Zeppelin, who were notorious for NEVER licensing their music to anybody, to let them use the Immigrant Song for this one, using nothing more than his charm and humility when he made a video just for them using the extras that played the public. This movie has it all, great performances by extremely talented child actors, a really good story, a truly legendary soundtrack, an homage to music and Rock specifically, it's simply a treasure, and Hollywood better not think about remaking this masterpiece. Ever. There is only one School of Rock!. 🤟
One thing I love most is how much of a onfidence boost he gave those kids that cle. Especially Lawrence, who said he was "not cool enough" and Tomika, who thought people would laugh at her because she had issues with her body weight & appearance. He REALLY made ALL of those kids feel great about themselves, and you can really see it happening through the course of the movie. After twenty years, I STILL love this film so fucking much! 🙃
Fun fact, the kid who played Lawrence thought he might not be cool enough to be in the movie, and the director took his actual concern and added it to the script.
I still come to this video in 2023 and it STILL moves me the same way it did 20 years ago. If you don’t at least partially tear up when Tomika overcomes her insecurities regarding her weight and literally rocks the house with her vocal solo, you don’t have a damn soul. RIP Kevin Clark (Freddy Jones) Hopefully that dude is somewhere beyond this plane of existence playing gut-busting drum solos for packed houses every night.
I love the story of how this song came about, Jack Black went to a The Mooney Suzuki concert, went backstage to meet them, asked them to write a song for the movie and they called back the next day with a rough version of this song.
If you listen to the lyrics especially, you'll see that Zack wrote this song about his experiences being Dewey's student. Imagine what a wild ride that was lol
He called Dewey a magic man, which he actually was. And I don't think he knew it was about him. He just knew it was a kick ass song. "And then that magic man, he come to town. Woowee, he done spun my head around. He said recess is in session. 2 and 2 make 5. And now baby I am alive." The best lyrics come from experiences.
I went to after school music class when I was young. You will surprise to see what the kids there can do. Sadly I have to move to another city and don't continue my music study until recently.
No kidding. Watching actors fake play a complicated instrument (strings ESPECIALLY (I'm a classically trained violinist)) is so unbelievably cringe. I'd MUCH rather have a less attractive person actually playing the instrument on screen instead of an attractive actor faking it.
@@iwasadeum i know what you mean i play violin as well never classically trained so not as good as i would like as i trained myself mainly to shut up my cousins grandpa who said to me you cant learn violin unless you start early in life so i bought a cheap one at a pawn shop and learned
My uncle had a summer music school and kids that age is the best time to teach them music and other things. I've seen kids as young as 5 read music notes while playing piano and violin.
I liked how the parents change from worried to death about their kids to surprised & proud of their kids hidden talents to being mad that their kids didn't win the battle of the bands
I really feel this showed that this character was a good teacher. He took a bunch of kids and taught them to play different kinds of music and to love that music.
Honestly my favorite part of the movie is how much props they give to the backup crew, making sure everything working and everyone is able to perform at their best Most music media focus on the band and music but neglect the fact that to run a good show you need more than the musicians
Yoi guys have no idea what seeing this scene again after all these yrs has done to me. It's brought back memories of a better time in my life. I loved this movie back then and consider it a modern classic. Meven though it's just a movie , I'm so happy for the students. Jack black changed the direction of their lives forever. Learning that you are actually talented at something can take your self esteem from the floor to heaven itself!!!!
I was exactly the kids' age when this movie came out and music was my favorite thing, so you can imagine how much I loved this. Pure joy. For some reason watching it now brings tears to my eyes!
RIP! In May 2021, Kevin Clark died in an accident, aged 32. He was riding his bike in Chicago when he was struck by a car on May 26, TMZ reported. In a tribute on social media, Jack Black remembered Clark as a "beautiful soul" and said he was heartbroken by his death. Clark hadn't appeared in any films after School of Rock. Instead, he lived a relatively private life as a professional drummer for a band called Dreadwolf. He reunited with his former substitute teacher, Jack Black, in 2018.
I love how every single band member, even those backstage with the effects, are important and showcased during this performance. They all have roles that are just as important as the last and they are treated as equals. Amazing!
This movie is a 10/10. This scene is iconic, Jack Black gives a performance for the ages. Richard Linklater directs this movie and scene like a Spike Jonze music video. God this movie ROCKS
This film will always stick with me. Musical chemistry between Jack Black and the students is absolutely amazing. Always makes me realise what some films are all about, bringing people together of all ages and loving every moment of the film that they star in. ❤️
Can I also just say, coolest parents! They were angry and ready to fight then saw their kids having fun, expressing themselves, SHININ and they just smiled like they would at any school performance I love that I notice that now
“I've been touched by your kids… and I’m pretty sure that I’ve touched them.” Seen School or Rock a dozen times. Ashamed to admit it, but I laugh at this joke and Lawrence calling Jack Black a fat loser every time
This is one of my favorite movies of all times. Now I’m a dad, and my daughter will see it. It teaches kids to be who you are. Everybody can kick ass in their own way. It’s so good
ffs I went from loving this movie as a kid when it came out to the final performance brings me to tears everytime now.... all the parents in the crowd watching their kids shred.... my kids still bring me to tears every school performance... my oldest is 17 and still brings me to tears.
This movie continues to be iconic and funny, Jack Black was born to play in this movie along with all the fantastic kids, rest in peace to Kevin Clark too who played Freddy who was my favorite character in the movie🤟🏻
Rewatching this movie, its incredible that jack blacks character was able to teach all theses kids how to sing/play each of these instruments fluently in only a few months.
This finale is so damn satisfying when you think about the earlier scenes with Dewey hilariously singing and dancing this song to the kids while trying to explain his vision My favourite all ages movie hands down
I remember me and my sister loving this movie when we were really young. Watched it all the time. I’m thankful that things like this and my parents constantly playing classic rock music gave me such good music taste.
@aaron6002 same happened to me but my German parents - born in 1935 listened to 5th dimension and Phillysound 😊 and me brought the classic rock into the family. Anyhow - need some stuff nobody knows ? Listen to Zorbonauts - simple man. Think your parents will love it. It's a total unknown supergroup around Lynden Williams . I made a 6.5 hours playlist on the big s..... streamer - channel "stromtupper" - playlist "the unknown universe of Lynden Williams"
I saw Tenacious D live couple years ago, Jack and Kyle are still rocking like teens on the stage, it is sooo fun to watch and to listen to 😂 Jack Black is such a talent, idk why most people won't take him more serious
I dare say he's one of the actors/singers in show business who is taken the MOST seriously. He nails every performance. Humans are generally very good at creating a "yeah, but" argument and would literally find a way to say Jesus had drawbacks. But I don't think there is one soul who has ever considered that for Black.
This movie will always be a massive part of my childhood, as was a HUGE influence on me starting to play music. Every part of the cast has a special place in my memory
It's a great message to kids with tradituonal parents. Just because your parents have a path laid out for you doesn't mean it's the right path. Kids should be encouraged to express themselves.
Ma dudes, I cry happy tears every time I see this. This kind of music education focused on self appreciation and creativity wasn't something I got in school, and because I had a religious upbringing it (rock/music) wasn't a opportunity I saw. I show this movie to anyone who's haven't seen it. Can see it again and again. If you put your mind and focus to something, the sky is the limit!
are you fucking kidding me? look how packed that club is!! that's gotta be about sold out, at what looks like easily a 500-700 capacity room. this is a local battle of the bands gig that's not just a matinee, but a mid-week matinee. i dare you...i triple dog dare you to sell out a mid-week matinee of ANY show, let alone a local battle of the bands. we'll see how enthusiastic the crowd is. over 10yrs in the live music industry, and i've barely seen 100 people show up for sunday hardcore matinee with national touring artists.
The craziest thing about this, for me, is that I QUITE LITERALLY live down the street from a SCHOOL OF ROCK center, here in Far North side of Chicago. I can come out of my bldg and walk rt up the street to it. Love this music movie becuz it encouraged kids to tap into their vast many talents and opened up their confidence to the widest degree. I went to an arts JHS and HS in 80s & 90s, so I def know why this movie really matters.
School of Rock Lyrics [Verse 1: Jack Black] Baby we was making straight A's But we was stuck in a dumb daze Don't take much to memorize your lies I feel like I've been a hypnotized And then that magic man he come to town (Woo Wee) He spun my head round He said recess is in session 2 and 2 make 5 And now baby oh I'm alive Oh yeah I am alive [Chorus] And if you wanna be a teachers pet Well baby you just better forget it Rock got no reason Rock got no rhyme You better get me to school on time OH YEAH (yeah) [Verse 2: Tomika (Jack Black)] Oh you know I was on the Honor Roll Got good grades And got no soul Raise my hand before I could speak my mind I've been biting my tongue too many times (And then that magic man said to obey) Uh huh (Do what magic man do) (Not what magic man say) Say what (Now can I please have the attention of the class) (Todays assignment) *Ahem* Kick some ass [Chorus] And if you wanna be a teachers pet Well baby you just better forget it Rock got no reason Rock got no rhyme You better get me to school on time And if you wanna be a teachers pet Well baby you just better forget it Rock got no reason Rock got no rhyme You better get me to school on time Oh yeah! @@Thunda1986 sometime the obvious solution is the best solution. Take Creed for example. Adonis lost in the first movie for absolutely no reason other than to have another Rocky comparison. And that would have been fine if he faced Pretty Ricky Conlan in the sequel but that didn't happen. It's still a good movie but it would have been better had Adonis won.
It's not always that simple. For this, my guess is that No Vacancies won because they were all adults (not that they didn't hold their own). It just wouldn't have been "right" to give the prize to a mostly-kid band over adults. In Star Wars AOTC, there were other considerations for Anakin Skywalker, but they chose Hayden Christensen because he and Natalie Portman looked great together. As for Creed, Pretty Ricky was technical and coordinated his whole career. Adonis has been fighting his whole life, but he never had technique and coordination mainly being that no one would train him. Then he meant Rocky and started gaining technique and coordination. But then, word got out that he's Apollo's son and he [pretty much] got slapped with an offer right there. Adonis was just REALLY starting right there, plus you got Pretty Ricky having reach, so Pretty Ricky winning that fight didn't/wouldn't not make sense.
@@Sal_Sal27 ok but the kids had a bigger reaction than No Vacancies who laughed thinking they wouldn't be good especially with Dewey and we're proven wrong, even showing signs of shock. And you're right about Adonis but if he should have lost any fight it should have been the one in the sequel against Viktor Drago the first time (but I'm glad he didn't). Adonis didn't need to go the distance and lose to prove his talent. His Apollo's son and was trained by Rocky Balboa, a perfect recipe for success. Losing only makes sense from a realistic standpoint but it is a movie where the good guy should have came out on top. It's not like Bruised where Halle Berry ran out on her last fight and had to prove she's not a quiter. It's not a redemption story it's an origin story that should have saw Creed as the victor who would stay undefeated in the second movie and into the third, only losing to who is also undefeated if that person is more technical than him.
Let us not forget that the song was written by the kid guitarist. And the song is clearly about this random teacher (jack black aka magic man) who showed up by chance and inspired every single one of the class to be everything they all wanted to be. Will never get tired of this scene
He took these brilliant kids with a LOT of pressure in their lives and showed them how music can ease their stresses, and how creative they can truly be when they "apply" themselves in something so fun and yet so cool!

Spare the cursing
Fun fact, the kid who played Lawrence thought he might not be cool enough to be in the movie, and the director took his actual concern and added it to the script.
I still come to this video in 2023 and it STILL moves me the same way it did 20 years ago. If you don’t at least partially tear up when Tomika overcomes her insecurities regarding her weight and literally rocks the house with her vocal solo, you don’t have a damn soul.
RIP Kevin Clark (Freddy Jones)
Hopefully that dude is somewhere beyond this plane of existence playing gut-busting drum solos for packed houses every night.
It was her parents' reaction that got me. Just glowing with pride and thinking "That's our baby!"
I love the story of how this song came about, Jack Black went to a The Mooney Suzuki concert, went backstage to meet them, asked them to write a song for the movie and they called back the next day with a rough version of this song.
Hence the last name of Zach is "Moony " ham
@@DOI_ARTS I did wonder if that was connected, or if it was just coincidence, as I pretty sure they had already started filming before this point
@@Dayman87 yeah JB talks about it an interview
Really? Wow
Fun fact: Mooney Suzuki's song, called 99% has the same intro progression
If you listen to the lyrics especially, you'll see that Zack wrote this song about his experiences being Dewey's student. Imagine what a wild ride that was lol
He called Dewey a magic man, which he actually was. And I don't think he knew it was about him. He just knew it was a kick ass song.
"And then that magic man, he come to town. Woowee, he done spun my head around. He said recess is in session. 2 and 2 make 5. And now baby I am alive." The best lyrics come from experiences.

The song was in fact written by a band called moony sazuki not jack black he gave them some concept lyrics and they wrote it
I always burst into tears when the little girl who thought she was fat has her solo moment. She has the most incredible voice
I am genuinely surprised they got kids who could actually play all these instruments. As someone who plays and has for many years, that’s impressive.
What’s harder finding kids who can play or somehow convince the one kid who can actually hold a tune to not be able to do that at all.
Jack Black is a national treasure and should be protected at all costs

I just realized that Zack wrote this song about Dewey. That's fucking sweet man.
Honestly my favorite part of the movie is how much props they give to the backup crew, making sure everything working and everyone is able to perform at their best
Most music media focus on the band and music but neglect the fact that to run a good show you need more than the musicians
Yup rip kevin he did good job playing Fred the drummer in school of rock

Aw. That's terrible.Thanks for explaining.

This movie continues to be iconic and funny, Jack Black was born to play in this movie along with all the fantastic kids, rest in peace to Kevin Clark too who played Freddy who was my favorite character in the movie🤟🏻
Great movie and an amazing song. These kids were between 10-12 when they starred in this movie and what a remarkable magic they created
Rewatching this movie, its incredible that jack blacks character was able to teach all theses kids how to sing/play each of these instruments fluently in only a few months.
I've never seen this scene and NOT CRIED WATERFALLS OF JOYFUL TEARS. Years later, still crying & smiling at Jack and these amazing young rockstars🥲😭🥲
This finale is so damn satisfying when you think about the earlier scenes with Dewey hilariously singing and dancing this song to the kids while trying to explain his vision
My favourite all ages movie hands down
I remember me and my sister loving this movie when we were really young. Watched it all the time. I’m thankful that things like this and my parents constantly playing classic rock music gave me such good music taste.

Jack Black is such a talent, idk why most people won't take him more serious
I love this movie so much ❤❤
I think its more people want him to be serious because hes so talented but its just who he is to be energetic and childish and i love him
I dare say he's one of the actors/singers in show business who is taken the MOST seriously. He nails every performance. Humans are generally very good at creating a "yeah, but" argument and would literally find a way to say Jesus had drawbacks. But I don't think there is one soul who has ever considered that for Black.

Love this movie, and that this song essentially tells the story of the experience that Dewey left on the kids is incredible.
I love the way Jack runs off stage at the end. He’s more of a kid than the kids! 😁

School of Rock Lyrics
[Verse 1: Jack Black]
Baby we was making straight A's
But we was stuck in a dumb daze
Don't take much to memorize your lies
I feel like I've been a hypnotized
And then that magic man he come to town
(Woo Wee)
He spun my head round
He said recess is in session
2 and 2 make 5
And now baby oh I'm alive
Oh yeah
I am alive
[Chorus]
And if you wanna be a teachers pet
Well baby you just better forget it
Rock got no reason
Rock got no rhyme
You better get me to school on time
OH YEAH (yeah)
[Verse 2: Tomika (Jack Black)]
Oh you know I was on the Honor Roll
Got good grades
And got no soul
Raise my hand before I could speak my mind
I've been biting my tongue too many times
(And then that magic man said to obey)
Uh huh
(Do what magic man do)
(Not what magic man say)
Say what
(Now can I please have the attention of the class)
(Todays assignment) *Ahem*
Kick some ass
[Chorus]
And if you wanna be a teachers pet
Well baby you just better forget it
Rock got no reason
Rock got no rhyme
You better get me to school on time
And if you wanna be a teachers pet
Well baby you just better forget it
Rock got no reason
Rock got no rhyme
You better get me to school on time
Oh yeah! (yeah)
[Outro: Jack Black]

Now you all know who I am
I may not be that perfect son
But y'all be rocking when I'm done

FLIGGAGIGGAGOO FLIGGAGOO!!
I didn't care when I was a kid but as an adult I think School of Rock should have won, and if this had been made by Disney they would have!
It would've been to obvious
@@Sal_Sal27 It’s No Vacancy
Let us not forget that the song was written by the kid guitarist. And the song is clearly about this random teacher (jack black aka magic man) who showed up by chance and inspired every single one of the class to be everything they all wanted to be. Will never get tired of this scene
