  • The cheap SAAB gets new rear brakes. Will it pass inspection this time? The old ones are very rusty and the brakes were very uneven in the back. Hopefully the callipers are still in good shape and can be used again!

Adam, My current beater is a: Saturn Sl1, purchased from a 90 yr old lady that lost her license. 30,000 miles. It has 159,000 miles now. The BMW, Jag and Tr-6 are cozy in my garage.

I had to google the Saturn since we don’t get them here. The little old lady cars are the best! I hope it gives you many more miles of use

Have you noticed a change in exhaust pipe seals into the exhaust manifold? They used to be fiber ones, now they are 2 half’s of galvanized steel with cheap fiber material inside. XJS. Purchased from Moss in Calif. maybe your supplier has better?

Yes they are different now. I find I need some exhaust sealing past on them also

Urrgh! I’m not liking this new world. Cheap crap, I might just machine out of Alum or brass. I’ll have to study heat charities of those metals. Uurgh!

To be fair mine have been gas tight at least. Another sealing ring would be a great build

Great tips! Glad the SAAB passed, well done Adam!
The SAAB was unique here in the US because Opel was never imported. The Saturn L series and Cadillac Catera were two models based on Opel designs, the Catera really being a rebadged Opel.

Thanks! As Swedes we are intrigued how valued Volvos and SAABs were outside Sweden when new. In many countries they were considered luxury’s cars but here they were just average joe cars

Always a good feeling to have that pass certificate in your hand. These cars are now really Good used buys, pretty tough and mostly easy to work on. All the GM parts make them quite affordable too. Much nicer than an old Vauxhall or Opel.

So far it’s been a really good buy. $500 to purchase and about $150 after 6 months to fix a few small items. Not bad at all in my book

    Fantastic, 'Thanxs'
showing how to do mechanical repairs is indispensable to the likes of me! Im not a mechanic but these are definitely jobs i want to tackle on my own car & having someone show just how its done 'hands on' is indispensable
    Luv the SAAB :)

Ive had my 1999 Saab 9-3 convertible since 2018 , had loads of work to it ,despite only doing small annual mileages - I use it as weekend car ,but enjoy the car very much. Good to see you are keeping yours going too.

I'm glad it passed the inspection! On my XJ40, I changed the wheel bearings on all 4 corners of the car and it still makes a lot of noise on the road. It turns out that I will need to replace the two output shaft bearings on the differential. Mine has 200000km and as I read on a Jaguar forum, they are supposed to be replaced at 160000km, so quite overdue!

Have you ever checked the differential oil?

@@lieberfreialsgleich Hi! Yes, I did an oil change on the diff. It wasn't low level, my output bearings are just overdue.

They are a bit noisy on my XJ40 also. Mostly noticeable at 80 km/h. If I were keeping it I would be replacing them also

As always great video, My Beater is a Dodge Ram 1500 V8 gas guzzler, fortunately here in AZ/USA do not have to worry about winter tires, just need to make sure the A/C works and 'sometimes' in winter the heater can pump out for about 10 minutes.

I hope to be able to have a truck as a beater someday. However US pick up trucks are really expensive here. Best bet would almost be to import one myself.

Good thing that the SAAB always needs to be left in reverse when parked
