Linus tries gaming with the Audeze LCD-GX gaming headset, a reimagined version of the company's LCD-2 planar magnetic headphones, now with a microphone and new look. But is there any reason to spring for these over the cheaper Mobius headset?

wish my razer nari had a better system to readd earcups (serial number is inside one of the earcup) like the kraken v2. nari is £122 I got them for from amazon
bruh they're detachable
Yeah, it's normal for audeze earcups to be glued with plain 3m double-sided tape. You can buy a special circular stencil, but when I had to replace or re-attach mine (double-sided tape ages), I just did it with multiple short strips to form a circle.
Linus: Unboxes $900 headphones
Also Linus: Immediately starts RIPPING one of the ear cups off.

Swapable ear cups is a feature that most people expect on high dollar headphones. Even my $100 Audio Technica ATH-40MX's allow me to switch out the ear cups when they get worn out and gross.
@@poisonouslead85 A lot of higher end headphones have proprietary ways to mount their pads. Some have a ring that the leather is glued to, some just have a terrible slip-in mechanism. The general audiophile gaming headset rule still applies here: buy good headphones for less than an equivalent (or worse) headset (in this case, LCD-2s), and then use the rest of the money on an okay USB mic or an entry-level XLR setup.
Every time I explain what I'm looking for, clueless people tell me exactly that. Problem is... that is not at all what I'm looking for. People seem to focused on what they know, that they completely miss that not everyone is looking for the same features.
The Sennheiser Headsets are pretty good. They are basically the HD 500/5XX series with a microphone. They are 200€ tho.
@@HazewinDog they tell you that because you will never find a top of the line headset with a top of the line mic attached. Even if you do, youre about to get wallet raped. It is ALWAYS better to buy them separate. But the question is, do you need a top of the line mic? Unless you do your own video or audio work for income then no, just get a good headset with a good mic attached.
Yes, my philips shp9500 are my favorite pair of headphones and have tried many gaming headsets for hundreds more that suck. They also beat QC35s in every aspect too. They are just so damn comfortable and the sound is amazing
@@HazewinDog Well, I mean, you can still buy what you want, it's just a fact that a headset will cost 3 or 4 times more than an equivalent headphone and usb mic setup.
But if you do want a good headset at a good value, a trick I recommend is looking at headsets from non gamer brands, specifically headsets for broadcast. Audio Technica, Sennheiser, Yamaha, etc. make really good headphones and the mics on them are more directional and usually have wider frequency response, and those are starting in the 150-200 dollar range.

It’s fine. I didn’t need to hear what the mic sounds like anyway.
What's even more infuriating is not hearing it compared to the cheaper mobius that can be had for 300(if you get cloud orbit s) and has the same audio design but with advanced 3d audio that takes the position of your head ad creates a true virtual soundstage that you can move your head around hear each of the 7 sound sources.
@@magiricod The mobius has lower quality drivers and is closed back, not as good for realistic sound reproduction. The digital soundstage thing they do with the 3d audio is to essentially try and make up for the fact that they are closed instead of open.
I own a pair of GXs AMA!. The mic really is not good. I also had the Cloud Orbits that CockatooDude mentions below. I returned them after a week or so. They don't sound $300 good IMO and the 3D sound stage was gimmicky yet cool but the headtracking honestly got really annoying.

Lense, but yes.
I've recently started dabbling into the audiophile world with the Schiit Magni/Modi stack with a couple of hifi headphones from Beyerdynamic and Sennheiser. To compliment my gaming needs, I decided to try some "cheap" planar magnetics and bought the Audeze Mobius gaming headset about a month ago. They absolutely blew my mind when it came to its ability to immerse you in the game world and even in movies. Played some Red Dead Redemption 2, and the headset's ability to reproduce the game's soundscape is very accurate. I know everyone has heard companies advertise their headsets to reproduce realistic gunshots and explosions... It might sound cliche but this is the first time I have truly experienced that with the Audeze Mobius. I thought the gunshots in RDR2 were fairly loud and accurately represented but damn, as soon as I heard the first explosion in the game, I literally jumped. Even tho I would anticipate every explosion, I would still physically react to it (mind you guys I dont listen to loud volumes. Character conversations were somewhat on the quiet side). The bass on planar magnetics are no joke. They reproduce accurate, VERY deep bass without making the overall sound muddy (Ever owned a pair of Beats? Just throw them in the trash! You have never heard bass like this on headphones). The mids and highs stay intact and don't get drowned out by the bass. And thats not to say that these things can't reproduce crisp highs, they can! Planar magnetics are a sound driving technology of wonders, that everyone needs to experience in their life. Owning a piece of decent planar magnetics isn't cheap either. In a certain way, they are the holy grail of personal sound performance imo. To anyone sensitive to loud noise, take this as warning. If anyone has seen a Christopher Nolan film in IMAX, you know what im talking about. The Audeze Mobius is exactly that... You want that IMAX sound experience? This is it! Oh and you DO NOT need an amp/dac to run the Mobius. The DAC is built in and they connect directly to your PC via USB. Im impressed by this level of immersive sound without any external sound hardware. I'm excited to see Linus's review of the Mobius.
Side note: the HyperX Cloud Orbit S is the Audeze Mobius rebranded in HyperX and without the bluetooth

I remember when these were announced, and I had the same confusion I voiced on Headfi that I do now. Aside from a mic they add nothing from a "gaming aspect". Besides price, they're basically just LCD-2's, so... why do they exist? I have a hard time believing that the wallet warrior "gaming audiophile" demographic is big enough or specific enough to justify a niche product in an already niche community. I'm still lost.
They probably saw that there are a lot of gamers that are able to buy summit end gear regardless of they are audiophiles or not
Also, any self-respecting audiophile would atleast have the common courtesy to have a decent mic if they can spend mony on Audezes or Hifimans.
I'm pretty sure the LCD-2s don't include a high quality headphone amp/mic receiver that is pre-wired for laptop or computer use. I would think you could hook any mic up to that headphone amp and be ready to game with only one USB slot used. If you have the money to shop for this level of headphones then why not spend a tad extra for included mic and amp.
@@aaronb9630 this doesn't come with the amp. Just the headphones, and the 2 cables. 1 standard 6mm and 1 with the mic built in.
Audeze has been around for a long time, so they probably had their reasons for releasing this gx. The GX is more like the LCD-2C, rather than 2 because of the lack of their phaser array. The GX has a significantly lighter body, and more neutral sound signature, which I think is more ideal for gaming. Linus must be doing something wrong with his mic settings because I haven't had any issues with mine.

The coiled wire, cloth ear cushions, and semi-open design makes it fantastic for gaming and music without a lof of the hassles and discomfort I've found with other headsets.

Great Video today! I had the Audeze LCD-2 for years but they were too heavy, and I switched to the HiFiMan HE-560 and then later got their Edition-X and HE-1000se - all much more comfortable, like my HD-600. HOWEVER, I did buy the Audeze Mobius when they were released, and I think they are great for watching movies and playing games due to the immersive 3D audio. They can be used with USB audio (built-in DAC), 3.5mm analog audio, or Bluetooth. The frequency response is very flat and they sound like the AUDIO IS COMING FROM THE SCREEN in front of you and not the headphones! They don't isolate much, but they have a great sense of space and transparency, with fantastic detail. They have less bass impact than the LCD-2 although the bass does play very deep, and the bass responds very well to more via EQ without distortion (esp used via USB power). Mine came with boom mic, a long USB-C to C and USB-C to A, and a 3.5mm cable.
@Obiajulu Ezenwabachili yes, but only with EQ on the PC to add bass and only via USB-C for use with my PC. For music I have much better sounding headphones.
@Obiajulu Ezenwabachili I think my replies keep disappearing, when I reply on my phone I don't see them here. I use the HE-1000se in my previous post for music. I tried to post budget recommendations where you get Headphone + a decent DAc/amp combo for under the same $900 in Linus's video, but I can't see it here now.
@Obiajulu Ezenwabachili I think my posts don't stick if I have links in them. I have over 100 reviews as HeadphoneAddict on a popular "Head-Fi" forum. If you’re looking for a budget recommendation, the drop com HD 6XX with the drop com 2.5 mm balanced cable plugged into my CEntrance blueDAC sounds fantastic. Those headphones really need a good DAC and amplifier, and BlueDAC is sold out. The Schitt Audio Modi DAC and Magni amp can drive them on a tight budget, but I prefer the Cavalli Liquid Carbon X from drop com as my budget HD600/6XX amp, using the balanced headphone cable. The Cavalli amp when paired with a decent budget DAC (DacportHD, Hi-mDAC, Modi) hit above its pay grade. Another good low budget option for the HD 6XX that’s a little more expensive but will blow you away is the Palab M1 mini which is a usb DAC with a built in balanced headphone output. For a little more money the CEntrance hifim8 V2 could be your one and only desktop and portable DAC with amplifier in the house. It’s fantastic with the HD6XX, HD600, HE-1000se, hD800, HE-560, you name it. What I like about the BlueDAC, HiFiM8 V2, or Palab M1 Mini is they have balanced DAC's built-in with balance headphone outputs and plenty of power, and those 3 portable DAC/amps can drive most full size headphones better than some full size budget amps. There are a lot of desktop amps that are better if you have the budget. I was thinking headphone + DAC + amp under or at the $900 of these headphones. I loved my LCD-2 V2 but the weight on my neck was a deal breaker. My HiFiMan headphones are sooo much lighter, as are the Sennheiser. The HD660s do not need an amp.
@Obiajulu Ezenwabachili I use Tidal. I have Amazon HD but haven't used it yet. I also bought a lot of 24/96K HDtracks com a few years back.
If you used lcd x, then how mobius compares to lcd x

Having no context or reference as to how good those headphones sound, my oneodio pro-10 ($33) with a custom made auto-eq profile and hesuvi sounds like it's the best that headphones can sound.... While listening to lossy compressed music from youtube and spotify.
Custom tuned low end headphones can be really good for listening to compressed music. But it is a bad time listening to 120kbps MP3 on even the entry level Sony 7506, and listening to rock even at 320kbps MP3, you can still hear the compression. Audiophile equipment isn't meant to sound fun, it is meant to show every little detail, and highlight every flaw. It's why I have a pair of Skullcandy Crushers as well, that active bass is eargasmic with EDM.
Best way dankpods said to show someone who doesn't know what good audio is, is to start off with the cheapest thing where people would be like "oh yeah this sound really good" and just go up to really expensive stuff then go back to the cheap stuff where people are like "yep, no these are bad"
Bought these primarily for listen to music between meetings. Absolutely floored by how good these sound compared to my 6XX or Audeze Mobius, although the 6XX does have fantastic midrange and are insanely comfortable.
These are a great investment for any music lovers willing to fork out the cash - silly price for a consumer but reasonable for enthusiasts. The bang for buck is probably the best you can get from Audeze. I prefer these to the more expensive 2 or 2C and you get a mic to boot.
6:18 that’s what she said
LOL
10:58 "Sounds amazing?" What a way to review sound characteristics of a headphone..
Let's be real, this is the LTT audience... 90% won't understand audio descriptors beyond "sound gud".
Check out Joshua Valor's review of these if you need it to be more descriptive
@@ryannjas JV has great video production quality, but no idea what he's talking about when it comes to headphones. Watch literally anyone but JV and Zeos....
metal571, Max_Settings. DMS, Resolve, etc.
At least Zeos is good for entertainment value.
I would say DMS is the best when it comes to describing sound with analogies.
@@Bradum Why do you say that? I strongly disagree. I like that JV reviews things without the layers upon layers of "audiophile bs" that many others provide. He's not out there telling you that amps/dacs make night and day differences, he's not trying to compare products based on irrelevant measurements, he's just giving you a very detailed review from the perspective of a normal person. Plus, his production quality is easily the best of any audiophile channel.
I bought a pair of LCD-X's based on his reviews and they sound basically exactly like what he described.
8:54 Linus Catch Tips
I have LCD2's that I use for gaming. If these are anything like those I would highly recommend!
Hahaha 900 bucks and i just watched how easily linus tore the ear cup half off... no thanks
waste of money
The Hifiman sundara is far better sounding. It's at the level of the LCDX
They fall off your head. No thanks. Cheap.
@@Seanweekhaizhen Spoken like someone who bought a Sundara and REALLY wants to believe its better than it is.
Unless you really hate the sound signature, any sane person would take LCD-2 over Sundara any day. You also use the term "at the same level of" (lolwut?) and then name a headphone that's known for its significant unit variance...
Please stop spreading misinformation just because you want to feel like you got a good deal.
That zoom at 9:00! Such a cool shot. Is that the probe lens?
4:34 when Linus knew he was kissing his monetization on this video goodbye
4:50 when are mousepads coming to the lttstore? 👀
It looks SO SICK
When a pair of Headphones are more expensive then ur whole setup. bruh
Can't wait for the review of the mobius, I've had them for almost a year now and I love them. I added some slightly thicker ear pads but even in stock form they're comfortable and sound amazing.
can't wait for the review of the HyperX Cloud Orbit S, which i completely love, and feature that amazing Planar Magnetic Driver from Audeze
@@LATasKara The Orbit S is basically just a rebranded Mobius without bluetooth, so should be pretty much the same.
I've had the Mobius for a couple years now, from the original Indiegogo campaign, and I love them. However, the plastic started cracking where the earphones are connected to the headband and eventually one earphone completely snapped off. Even though they were out of warranty, Audeze offered a replacement headset at a deep deep discount, so I'm at least thankful for that. Still a little disappointing that a $400 pair of headphones would physically break after a couple of years, and it doesn't look like the new headset has the weak spots reinforced at all, so I'm sure the same thing will happen eventually.
The probe lense take was so unnecessary, but nevertheless really cool
I think true reference headphones are the Sennheiser HD 600. But it doesn't mean you'll like reference quality... Simply because reference sound quality can sound too boring, because they're exactly that, reference.
gahman I am very pleased with my HD 600, not too boring, but very good for both gaming and music with a decent soundcard. Together with Asus STX it is a perfect match in my opinion.
@@bergennorway I love mine too! I'm an audio engineer and I use mine to mix and compare mixes. The HD 600 has an almost neutral sound signature, just lacking a bit of sub bass. But my point is, people who own them most likely prefer other headphones that have either boosted lows, or more sparkle in the highs. Which is a little sad because to me, they're the perfect pair od headphones.
5:25 even till today I remember the PC that is in the background I want that PC so bad
This could be good to test the new EVGA NU cards
the EVGA cards are pricey but deliver an incredibly clear sound, imo they beat many of the common dac& setups.
Guys: $900 is NOT a lot for quality headphones! Top tier cans are about $6500 and require a dedicated amp that costs about the same. All in with a good DAC you’re looking at $20K min. So $900 + $200 or so for a DAC/AMP is far from “expensive”. The $300 top of the line SteelSeries feels like a toy in comparison.
Spoiler alert:
The Mobius has the same mic.
Note, they do not sound the same. I have both the Mobius and GX and have taken Mic samples. The Mobius has an ADC in-built to process whereas the GX required an external ADC (soundcard or USB device) to process. I used the Audeze recommended EVGA Nu.
bowei0060 would you recommend a different headset that has similar sound quality as these LCD-GX headphones, but better comfort? Maybe BeyerDynamic?
@@AtomicSymphonic It is hard to find something with similar sounding to Audeze without sacrifying a bit if comfort since most good planar headphones are really heavy with big pads and have similar build. However, if you have a good amp that can deliver a lot of power, you may consider the dt 880 premium 600 ohms (not the dt 880 pros). It sounds pretty similar to audeze lcd-2 with less fatiguing, lighter weight and imo, more comfortable. It's only downside is it will need a powerful amp to drive.
@@phatanhduyle7259 As someone who owns 880 600 ohm and is quite familiar with LCD2, I can assure you they sound nothing alike.
@@Bradum which one is better ?
Linus: You dont need any of this.
Me: including the headphones?
10:40 For someone do not stream like me, the included mic is pretty much fine, I think if the micphone is removable it will be the better design
Just another episode of Linus flexing and calling me poor
0:48 how I feel like someone cut my speech in a conversation
9:03 oh look who got themselves a Laowa Probe Lense 😏
i haven’t watched or seen linus in a while and i see his beard now and i realize: “wow linus is actually starting to look like an adult!”
Linus: 900 dollar headphones
Also Linus : tears the earcups😂
coz earcups should come off easily, especially on high end headphones
Smashing planar magnetic headphones together like Linus does at around the 8 minute mark is exactly how you (potentialy) destroy planar magnetic headphones. Well done, mate.
I feel like this should be on short circuit
Same, this was more of an unboxing, rather than a review
Short Circuit was created because they get sent a lot of things, and they wanna showcase some stuff, but don't think they are good enough for a video of their own, but this made the cut
I thought this was a short circuit till I read your comment
Me too
It's a pretty massive oversight to talk about the mic sound, but not give an example.
That might come off as "too complainy", and Linus gotta eat.
It’s trash don’t use my mic at all
@Heathen Raid you actually bought it?
Nice!
F.B.I yeah sounds incredible as you’d expect nothing less for that price lol but the mic is garbage 😂 , I mean it works and does the job but in the scheme of the whole headset price and what it’s aimed as it’s crap but I have a stand-alone mic on my desk so don’t need it but if you can catch a sale have your own mic option and want endgame audio for gaming and budget isn’t an issue just buy the HD800s that’s god level for immersion and positioning
I use sennheiser hd700's, simply because audio is very important to me. I previously had the 435's then the 598's, The open back is phenomenal for music, i still remember my first time experiencing real hifi, it was pure euphoria. It's impossible to explain, you have to experience it. Or dont, because it will ruin you and you'll never be able to hear anything the same again. Back to my setup I usually use a white noise generator when my environment gets loud around me and it really helps cut out the background noise. Can obviously still experience bleed through and you sacrifice some of your playback quality doing so, but eventually your brain stops hearing the white noise and the sound quality in my opinion is still better then what I've used before. Glad to see good audio making it's way into the market these past couple years. Even if it's a little overpriced. People always see the outlandish prices of some gear and immediately dismiss it, but have no problem spending 3/4 of that price on something popular and 9/10 times a substantially worse price to performance ratio.
When the headphones alone are twice as expensive as my laptop lmao
When the headphones alone sound better than the astro headsets you own dolby atmo is still nit that great stereo is pretty much what it is anyway
I love looking at stuff I'll never afford
I can't even afford a computer that costs that much right now 😂
I got the Penrose, besides the annoying small dongle range, the headphones sound is amaaaaaaazing. For gaming you only need to adjust the eq for little more bass.
Oh, refreshed at the right time.
Edit: The shit is this comment doing with 70 likes?
Same I couldn’t find anything to watch
Took a dump at the right time.
ZapperZ I just watched the tv video and there was a refreshed 10 min ago video
They look like the headphones you wear in wood shop in 7th grade to “protect your ears”
They gave you guys headphones in your class? Never got anything like that in our wood shop class.
Why quotation marks around protect your ears? Do they not do just that?

Looks like it :)
9:02 daang, that probe lens shot
Finally someone pointed it out. For those interested, it is probeably (pun intended) the Laowa 24mm, or at least that's the only lens of it's kind I've seen.
Armand Bíró yeah, it's the one
I love the magnesium housing more than any other of their designs
Linus: Casually grinds on a $900 pair of headphones
Me: Watching the review with $50 headphones

Watching review with laptop speakers lmao
Well seriously the only thing they do well is sound wtf it's $900 splurge a bit on the comfort.
Using a 150 euro phone
$20 headphones here
You have convinced me that even if I had the money these aren’t the headphones for me.
These will be great if you get a call while bike riding and yet sill have the ability to hear what's around you
5:33 Wow, he actually listens to the LTT intro song.
still using my Dollar General 15 dollar gaming headset since November of 2019, still good to this day. No wear outs, good sound quality, horrible microphone though from a Internal laptop source.
@TheGoat most people would rant about their headset in the internet and not write a positive review about them, so 80 bucks headsets are probably the best. I'm using a 2018 Gold Wireless Headset and I know no one asked.
Im sorry to tell you that its not good sound quality, you just dont know better.
@@Eletrix007 they're implying that the sound is fine for the price
4:33 you're welcome
4:30, so normally i save some LTT vids to a playlist to show my dad when i stop over, review like this don't normally make it, but for the name of that amp, it makes it.
I rock a set of HD600's as my daily drivers as well and they are a great bang-for-your-buck headset.
I would definitely recommend open-backed for gaming as it gives a much bigger soundstage giving you a more immersive feel.
Lul these headphones cost literally the price of my current laptop, that I've been using since early 2016. What do you mean they're overkill? 😂
they are not, overkill headphones are like Z1Rs and Empyrean that coast around $4000 and those are only consumer grade overkill, profesional grade stuff costas hundreds of thousands of $s
Bro I can buy a normal headset for a few hundred and it will be fine for gaming at least.
I prefer close over open.
if I can hear ourside sound when I am enjoying myself in a different world; I'll freaking throw it onto a Wall. and am not joking about it.
4:33 lmfao at the auto captions "So this is a shit hell."
