According to a Q&A by some of the people working on it, the two main people who made up the company are Bob Smith, that being a team member on Total War games like: Rome: Total War Medieval: Total War Shogun: Total War and specifically, the Lead Designer and Project Manager of Medieval 2: Total War And another person named John Carline who was the Lead Artist on Medieval 2: Total War
Konner Anderson The order of the total war games released went; Shogun 1, Medieval 1 and Rome 1. I imagine the guy worked on the earlier games and stopped after those three, and I doubt he returned much later for Shogun 2. And since Shogun 2 is a very different style to those early games, I'd assume he had no influence in it. But yeah, it seems like a great team. I always thought early Total War games were the best. Rome 1, Medieval 2 and Shogun 2 are the top three in the series for me. And having the lead designer of one and an experienced dev who understands the old style makes me optimistic about this.
Rome 2 was the last decent total war IMO, warhammer was so disappointing (and attila is good only thanks to mods)... Glad to see there may finally be a potent heir to the genre.
I was wondering why mulberries made silk better and so i looked it up and apparently, "Silkworms will only eat the leaves of the white mulberry tree ".
But Jon, if you didn't do big, complex strategy games where you don't know what you're doing, there'd be no big, complex strategy games on the channel. -- Snark the Snarkat
Wheeeeee. Sorry, I'm a bit excited, love your vids of this type of game. I've got so behind with Medieval, I need to find a whole week (or more) to catch up. Jon, please add one viewer to all medieval vids - I know its not much..... +1 viewer must be worth more than -1 perception though? Sorry that was unnecessary.
The Unheard Voice agreed. That's why I hate whenever he gets suggestively political, though he does so so little. It just doesn't fit with game commentary, and I'd rather have a break from that crap. Whether I agree with his political views or not.
Joe Savage I've been watching MATN for 2 years and haven't seen a vid with him getting political at all... other than in game, and that's a game! Sooo where is your comment coming from?
Boulder Bob I couldn't tell you a specific video, I've been watching him for 3ish years now, it all sorta gets muttled you know he does make videos daily, but I do recall him saying shit about America in general, In one or two of his videos. It wasn't even alighted as conservative or liberal, but it just didn't fit and I was like what the fuck man, this is video game playing, not time to get political. I get the feeling that he has this very negative opinion of American... Which is fine just an opinion, but its not really relevant to games. Plus I'm sure most of his audience come from the US.
Joe Savage Yeah, I've been binging on his videos recently and the one or two off hand comments I've seen, even ones I agree with, just stick out so much. Love this channel though.
Are you sure you don't want to name New New Jonton 'Yang'? There's 2 cities in china named Yin and Yang with a large hill separating them so its almost always sunny on one side and shady on the other.
Funny thing, Maddox M. The two heads of that dev team were in great part responsible for some of the best TW games to date (from shogun right up to medieval 2, I believe). Thus the very soul of TW does live in OE without “stealing” and “soul selling”. *sigh*, all those wonderful flavours and you choose to be salty af...
I love the way this game looks. I love how you can zoom in so far. I really like a lot about this game! I'd like to see more of this, and probably get it when it comes out.
This game just randomly showed up on my Steam page, and I saw it had overwhelmingly positive reviews and looked nice, so I got it. Very happy with it, this game is awesome.
Hey Jon, if you want to learn a bit about China I highly recommend either playing the Romance of the Three Kingdoms games (Crusader Kings in China but with crazy production values), or watching the brilliant Three Kingdoms TV series.
Personally I'm always suspicious about any series that makes it to number 13 without me even hearing of it. Actually, I'm suspicious of any game series that makes it anywhere near that many sequels even if I have heard of it. It's just like when a TV show goes on for 10+ seasons, or a movie gets 9+ sequels. There's no way it's top notch after they've wringed that much out of it.
There is a maximum number of cities Jon, it is approximately your authority level. Every city above your authority level increases noble unrest. When your king dies, his heir has a large authority malice for several turns, so if your are much above that city number you end up spawning noble rebellions and you lose some of your towns. Because of this, try to get the authority techs in the thought tree first (they have black fist icons). Another really good early tech is the one that unlocks the well field system in the power tree. It upsets peasants, but it greatly increases your tax income, so you can actually afford to build some buildings.
holy shit this is literally everything i've ever wanted from a grand strategy game!!!! i love civ and total war but always dreamed of a fusion between the two, and I'm Chinese so i want a chinese campaign!!!
Wow! Why didn't I heard about this game? This is the game I wanted since I've started to play total war games and Civilization(4x games in general) and I thought that i'll end up making it myself. 12 minutes and i'm already sold on this game.
Umm, just noticed from a review, the game count "professional soldiers" (Noble infantry, and non-peasant soldiers) as police and levy will most likely join peasants in revolts.
Ok ya got my interest, I do hope you play your miniseries all the way to the end cuz I want to see what else happens!? Will you conquer or will you be conquered, I'm so invested in this game I'm going to upgrade my computer to purchase it as well, but for now I would like to see some more. 🤓
The way I'd see it done would be by basically setting the following rules: no declaring wars, and if someone declares war on you you can only defend yourself and not attack or invade in any way. That way I believe it would not be impossible to win a shortened campaign by just spamming spies and assassins to neighboring factions and when their cities go rebel conquering them.
Legendoftotalwar played as France with the ruleset of winning absolutely no battles. He could only lose/surrender everything. He still won the grand campaign though. He named the series, "Total fucking idiot campaign" - or something. He swears a lot in his videos - if you couldn't tell by his title of the series obviously. He is a damn good player though, I don't know how good but definitely one of the best players out there.
My only complaint is that I wish the cities were designed a lot thicker and more complex, and then have the tiles not be exact hexagons or whatever and have them a bit skewed to form realistic land like Civilization does.
Whenever I play a Civ game I always wonder what exactly 1 person is representing. How many people are in this city? 100? 1,000? That's not even a city. 100,000? 1,000,000? How many solders are in this army? How do they live for hundreds of years? Are they training replacements? Is there a conga line from the city to the army? Do they start as toddlers and arrive as 80 year old men? Argh! Stop thinking about it! It's all bonkers!
also not like total war if you have to manually lay roads. doesn't take the same amount of time to build a road on Rhodes as it does to build a road from Timbuktu to Algiers and also doesn't take 1 turn to build all the road when it took 10 turns to walk across it for the army
EmperorShadow ouch, quite frankly the biggest challenge of the game is avoiding rebellions tearing your country apart, the ai isn’t aggressive enough to actually attack the player so rebels are the only threat
If I remember correctly, by around that time China wasn't as big because Korea was bigger than today and specially Mongolia, THEY were the big empire down there.
Exile Studios If you're more a fan of historical strategy games then yes, total warhammer is terrible when compared to older ones. Especially the streamlining.
Mmm... indeed. If they were to set it on some part in Europe (Specifically the Byzantine's since they didn't really get much attention if memory serves me which it probably won't) or Japan ((DZ... stop being biased.)) Biased? ((Its either Europe or japan for you, mate. Anything else and your like "Fuck them, they're boring")) And...? ((Whatever happened to that one rule you held?)) What...? you mean "Open minds for the wise" ? ((Yes)) ... Only applies to important decisions. ((What?)) If its important, its better to know what other people think before deciding. Personal preference does not apply to that rule. ((... curse your wits.)) DiZeN... i would probably curse my wits too. Ignore that bit.

cause knowledge is power
Gotta love that you can Google a thing that the byzantine empire had to seduce a Chinese princess to find out XD
Ain't history grand?
But Jon, if you didn't do big, complex strategy games where you don't know what you're doing, there'd be no big, complex strategy games on the channel.
-- Snark the Snarkat
You sound suspiciously like Claire.
this is the first time, I'm seeing this game ad it looks GOOD.
You have to make a series outta' this. You are going to? Right?
Oh yes.
Oh I love this channel.. xD
Hooray!
Every time I see a game like this crop up on the channel I think "I wish Jon had a play-through of Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri"
Wheeeeee. Sorry, I'm a bit excited, love your vids of this type of game.

Oh shit - I've just thought about what I said. +1 viewer actually equals -27k perception......
Errrrr......
Drama on most channels, drama on the news, fear in the streets, but MATN always provides content for me to escape all that jargon and politics.
Boulder Bob
He does make political comments but they are extremely rare, like the comment above said.
Boulder Bob I couldn't tell you a specific video, I've been watching him for 3ish years now, it all sorta gets muttled you know he does make videos daily, but I do recall him saying shit about America in general, In one or two of his videos. There's 2 cities in china named Yin and Yang with a large hill separating them so its almost always sunny on one side and shady on the other.
Here we go again boys
the face of bo. I was not prepared for that reference XD
Seen 5 minutes of this vid. Just tell me where to send my moneys...
Nigel Smith the steam link of course!
Yup. Someone at this new dev team definitely had to sell their soul and steal from total war and civilization to make a game this impressive
Have you seen the combat yet? It sucks. Hope they improve it
Funny thing, Maddox M.
5 minutes in and this looks so great!! Make a series of it.
a Chinese Total War/Civilisation... damn this is a good game to make
When I saw the title I was like " let me put on my Skepticles "
Gennik Skepticles was one of the greatest Greeks.
A bloody Face of Bo joke? This is why I love you, Jon.
Face of Bo was formerly the city of Jack Harkness.
Just imagine that song about Istanbul and Constantinople for a sec.
Even New New Jonton was once just New Jonton. Why'd they change it? I don't know.
That's nobody's business but the Nerd's.
Finally! Thank you, kind sir. And here I thought no one gets that reference. Hahaha
I'm hoping for Julianus to pop up again in here...
Minsc And Boo do you mean julianus asian cousin
kento yamashita Jurianus
Jurianus?
CPU Purple Heart/Neptune its the japanese version of saying julianus
This game just randomly showed up on my Steam page, and I saw it had overwhelmingly positive reviews and looked nice, so I got it.
Very happy with it, this game is awesome.
this game looks amazing hoping youre making a whole series
From the way your guys handle mountains, I guess there must be some New Vegas in there, too
I wanted Civ V+ RTW to be Civ VI. Firaxis took it in the opposite direction. This feels more like what I wanted.
Hey Jon, if you want to learn a bit about China I highly recommend either playing the Romance of the Three Kingdoms games (Crusader Kings in China but with crazy production values), or watching the brilliant Three Kingdoms TV series.

I bought this last night. Holy moly what a tiny download. Very impressed so far.
I'd like to see more of this, it's very interesting. I can't wait to see what the devs come up with for there next game idea?
Climbing war, these guys vs the wolf in safety simulator
Well there go about 500 hours of my life...
holy shit this is literally everything i've ever wanted from a grand strategy game!!!! i love civ and total war but always dreamed of a fusion between the two, and I'm Chinese so i want a chinese campaign!!!
Madness you say? "No great genius has ever existed without some touch of madness" -Aristotle
some of those devs were in the team that made MTW2
This game has been out for a long time, and it's pretty accurate to what they were going for. No suspicion needed.
Wow! Why didn't I heard about this game? This is the game I wanted since I've started to play total war games and Civilization(4x games in general) and I thought that i'll end up making it myself. 12 minutes and i'm already sold on this game.
This was really good please play more.
Umm, just noticed from a review, the game count "professional soldiers" (Noble infantry, and non-peasant soldiers) as police and levy will most likely join peasants in revolts.
Now its a mountain climbing contest between these guys and the wolf in search and rescue simulator
Beautiful. I'll be buying this.
Jon, it actually does tell you which turn it is, but it's in the top left, rather than by the end turn button.
Ok ya got my interest, I do hope you play your miniseries all the way to the end cuz I want to see what else happens!? Will you conquer or will you be conquered, I'm so invested in this game I'm going to upgrade my computer to purchase it as well, but for now I would like to see some more. 🤓
"I know it's a minor thing" Dude! That's like... Oriental Empire's main draw interest for people I've talked to.
Jon, honest question - which you'll probably not answer - did the demonetization wave hit you as hard as other content creators?
Yep, it's been a clear and huge difference since before the adpocalypse. It's been a big knock.
Man, I really appreciate your honesty in all this. Helping to support you the best I can!
Well, i guess it's time to become a Patreon than.. then.. thän..?
thats a bit weird usually you make pretty clean content free of controversy and what not
Wait, I've seen his Civ series, and his Total War series. So I wonder in this game will he have no wars, or all the wars?
I just had a thought come to mind. Is there such thing as a pacifist Total War challenge run? Total War with no War?
The way I'd see it done would be by basically setting the following rules: no declaring wars, and if someone declares war on you you can only defend yourself and not attack or invade in any way. That way I believe it would not be impossible to win a shortened campaign by just spamming spies and assassins to neighboring factions and when their cities go rebel conquering them.
Jon really knows what he's doing in those games. I'd like to see him try that sometime
Legendoftotalwar played as France with the ruleset of winning absolutely no battles. He could only lose/surrender everything. He still won the grand campaign though. "...He presumably is the face of bo." Ah, doctor who jokes
I really like the style and concept of this game!
My only complaint is that I wish the cities were designed a lot thicker and more complex, and then have the tiles not be exact hexagons or whatever and have them a bit skewed to form realistic land like Civilization does.
A mix of civ and total war sounds good to me, cant wait to see what its like once completed
Series... Series... Series... Series!!!!!!
"Horses haven't been invented yet, we'll have to invent it later" - MATN
10 minutes in and Im already hyped for this game =O
Jon, when practice off camera do you still narrate?
If you don't do the fighting then how is this not just Civilization? The reason to play Total War is for the battles not the campaign map!
Whenever I play a Civ game I always wonder what exactly 1 person is representing. How many people are in this city? 100? 1,000? That's not even a city. 100,000? 1,000,000? Do they start as toddlers and arrive as 80 year old men? Argh! Stop thinking about it! It's all bonkers!
I was looking for a new good strategy game, thanks!
MORE! :D Looks like a nice game!
I want to see Claire and Jon play magic the gathering. Legit card style
Please make a series of this
Legend says he’s still talking >
Apart from the combat this game looks great, the problem is combat is kind of important.
The fact that you can go into street view on your towns is super cool, but that must take up all the memory.
All hail emperor Jon!
Can't watch one of your video without a notification from you
That pathfinding reminds me of me playing Dragon Age: Inquistion.
also not like total war if you have to manually lay roads. doesn't take the same amount of time to build a road on Rhodes as it does to build a road from Timbuktu to Algiers and also doesn't take 1 turn to build all the road when it took 10 turns to walk across it for the army
Would like to see more, especially how combat works in this one.
The face of Bo, Jon is someone watching Doctor Who and not telling us?
Civ is made by an experienced team? Ever tried to set up a multiplayer game?
>as far as I can see there is no real limit to spamming cities every
Oh no, Inb4 massive rebellion
Yeah, I had a 2 city rebellion, one city was my capital, learned to not city spam, can get pretty ugly. Had to slaughter a lot of peasants lol.
EmperorShadow ouch, quite frankly the biggest challenge of the game is avoiding rebellions tearing your country apart, the ai isn’t aggressive enough to actually attack the player so rebels are the only threat
I live in China and I can confirm that it is somewhat larger than 10 square miles. It's at least 12 square miles.
Just because it's a new studio with no games doesn't mean the Devs are new to making games or have no experience
So this is pretty much Total War: Waring States Period but with civilization
Wow, it's like Supreme Commander.
If I remember correctly, by around that time China wasn't as big because Korea was bigger than today and specially Mongolia, THEY were the big empire down there.
Why does it feel like Jon just watched the first episode of Doctor Who series 2?
Wow, three kingdoms looks great
Heat signature in a week? Heat signature in a week.
Heat Signature next week.
Jon you have to check out ECHO! It's by the same guys that made Hitman, and it seems really cool! Plus it releases in a couple weeks.
I kid you not; I was thinking to rewive this game on my channel recently, wich is a crazy coincidensen
>Doesn't have Total War-y battles
:(
Seems like a cross between Total War: Shogun 2 and Civ 5
Finally a mainstream top quality game about China!
Huh, this game looks more interesting than modern Total War.
hahahahahaha its funny because its not true total war warhammer makes this look like babies first strategy game
Exile Studios If you're more a fan of historical strategy games then yes, total warhammer is terrible when compared to older ones. Especially the streamlining.
Exile Studios I'm not a big fan of the setting, I like the historical settings better, besides the new Total Wars are way too streamlined.
Mmm... indeed.
If they were to set it on some part in Europe (Specifically the Byzantine's since they didn't really get much attention if memory serves me which it probably won't) or Japan
((DZ... stop being biased.)) Biased? ((Its either Europe or japan for you, mate. Anything else and your like "Fuck them, they're boring")) And...? ((Whatever happened to that one rule you held?)) What...? you mean "Open minds for the wise" ? ((Yes)) ... Only applies to important decisions. ((What?)) If its important, its better to know what other people think before deciding. Personal preference does not apply to that rule. ((... curse your wits.)) DiZeN... i would probably curse my wits too.
Ignore that bit.
And I was going to suggest you try Kenshi, looks like you wont have time now.
Did anyone else get the Doctor Who reference "The face of Boe"
I'd like to see what combat looks like in this.
No real-time control of the armies = does not deserve the Total War comparison. That is the most integral difference between Total War and the majority of other games of that type.
I know, but the point still stands. The settlements and other similarities are not what defines the Total War series key differences to other games. Lots of other games have either copied, tried to copy, or maybe even preceded and influenced Total War's other aspects, but Total War's marriage of the real time combat with city building conquest, is what set it apart. This just seems like Civ. with a few tiny features and UI tweaks. Not saying it's a bad game (in fact it looks fun), just saying that it doesn't deserve the Total War comparison, as it only shares the most generic of Total War's features.
Even New New Jonton was once just New Jonton. Why'd they change it? I don't know.
That's nobody's business but the Nerd's.
is it better than empire ?? (and stil hoping for Persona 5)
I'm Not Sure Why, But Something Makes Me Feel You've Never Played Sid Meier's Civilisation III!
OMG PLZ DO A SIRES
I hope this goes to the Mongol wars and and what not. And expands into Asia ingeneral. I know the scope is to large but dlc ideas
The game was made by former devs of total war
OMG! The face of Bo!
i agree on the one map plane thing, unlike Total war, even though i don't play, but have like 4 different styles on total war, guess i didn't understand it doto the confusion of it, also i never ever played B4, wanted to learn but cant, as to why i am here what so different about Oriental Empires???
This game is much better than it has any right to be! :)
is this full version released?
Yeah its now available on steam
Thank you what is the difference from the alpha version?
Mostly just bug fixes, more options for buildings etc and a more stable game. It was officially released on 14th sept but they have said they intend to continue to develop the game
AHH So that why i thought it will be released in december well thank you for the info
I think you meant "Face of Boe" with an "e".
I like this game!
i think this has the opportunity to be better then civs.. depends on fights though
How is this anything like total war?
What on earth is this ?
