Jon instantly critiquing column usage is excellent and what I came here for.
Even better is that there is an actual reason it's like that in the game too
Finally, someone understands my pain. After studying historical architecture for a year, now I can't unsee.
@@theirishviking9278 I'm too uncultured. What is the reason?

YES 😻🥝 MORE 🍵🍵🍵PLEAZ
Fun fact: when it was a skyrim mod it won an Australian Writers Guild Award in the category of Interactive Media, the first ever mod to receive such an award.
It was a must have in any mod list.
4:38 Jon critiquing Roman architecture is my favorite genre of ASMR.
Yes
In this house, we stick to one style of column per building.
Absolutely. Nerds nerding is the best!
Oh yeah, I've been waiting for Classics Jon to take a stab at this game since the first trailer went up
@@ManyATrueNerd As an Architect I appreciate this.
This is great - I'd love to see another episode of Roman Detective Time Travel mixed with Jon chatting about Ancient Roman stuff
That should be Jons new channel.
Video game npc logic: "Oh good an unconcious person with amnesia, I'm saved!"
"I don´t know who you are, you don´t know who you are, but I have this really important mission for you..."
I'd love it if that was used as an actual plot point for once... well, there was that one game about that god that created made-to-order heroes that had to be removed once their quests were done so that the world wouldn't be destroyed by them.
@@dashiellgillingham4579 This sounds amazing, what game is this?
@@thisisacomment6061 It took some research, but I found it: Arx Fatalis.
@@dashiellgillingham4579 Interesting... I'll definitely have to take a look at that, thanks mate!
40:13 "we're golden" quite ironic phrasing
As soon as I saw this game on steam, I knew it was only a matter of time before Jon played it. I mean, it's the perfect storm for him.
- dialogue heavy, choice-driven RPG
- mystery to solve
- originally connected to a Bethesda game
- ROMANS
Yeah, it's like this game was made for him specifically XD
If it had hexagons Jon would be in heaven.
"Roman Murder Mystery"
Enter Hercules Poirotus and his friend Centurion Hastingius who solve various crimes.
More like Sherlionus Holmicanus and asclepius Watsonus!
"Didn't break any rules, we're golden" nice pun there, Jon
I honestly hope you do more of this, it's an amazing game and seeing you play it would be excellent. I wonder if you can find Al in the ancient city, given he was a statue and since you entered the past after him he should still be there. Also, is nobody going to mention that the guy's name was Hannibal, from Carthage!?
Hannibal got cannibal-ed.....
I had no idea this became a full game, with great Voice Acting!
There are places where there are multiple styles of columns in real life aswell, even though it is unusual. For instance if you look at the great mosque in Kairouan they collected all different styles of columns from all over the ancient world.
But this is a game about greco-roman civilization
@@BananaJoe42 Couldve stopped after the first 5 words
@@mrkillman555 but i didn't
@@BananaJoe42 Apparently there is a lore reason for the multiple styles
"I know a funny Roman name!"
"What is it?"
"It's Hilarius!"
"I do have my torch! Well, that's going to freak out some Romans!"
Hilarious as always, Jon. You should do a full playthrough of this mod, or at least allow us to see the unedited version of this video.
"You carry the fire of Prometheus in your hand"
I want to see more of this just for Jon's reaction. 100% this game myself and I know Jon will have many priceless reactions later on.
I get really excited whenever Jon covers a video around Roman stuff, his knowledge on the subject is so fun! ^^
@7:50 I love how you responded with the correct pronunciation of "salve" right after I was about to critique the first Roman you meet as hard as you critiqued those columns. XD
“…Dr. Jon the Archaeologist stepped into the forgotten city… and vanished. And so Dr. Jon finds himself leaping from cycle to cycle, striving to put right what once went wrong. His only guide on this journey is Al, who appears in the form of a gold statue, to tell him how ****ed everything is…”
he would spend more time fixing the architecture then the people's problems. Like power washing simulator only for greco roman pillars.
Nice quantum leap reference. :D
Nice one! picturing an agitated, gold-plated Dean Stockwell. lol. Damn but he was great in BSG, too.
For once I actually got a notification when the video dropped. Roman, time-traveling, mystery RPG? I’m in.
The YOLO run of this failed so fast, lol.
You can do a yolo in this. Not a good ending but it is an ending.
The only ending without time loops is a bit a downer lol.
@@kaiserkase3621 I regret nothing!
I think people are misunderstanding what yolo means. In the video footage shown at least Jon NEVER Died. Other people Died but HE never died he runs back to the time portal ALIVE to bring the items he found back to into the next iteration. Not sure why people think yolo mean no time travel.
I SACRIFICE MYSELF TO THE ALGORITHM GODS! PRAISE TO RNGESUS!
The mod is amazing! So glad it's creator got to release this masterpiece.
Roman Groundhog’s Day looks fantastic! Another great vid Jon!
If Jon critiques the columns harshly, wait til he sees the rows...
Any video where Jon gets to give Roman history lectures is a good video.
I remember this mod! Hopefully you don’t have to go around finding the pieces of that damn suit this time.
I'm having nostalgia flashbacks of the original mod. Man that's so cool
Absolutely loving this! One small quibble, there was a line about a great fire in Rome which seemed to be a reference to fire that swept the city during Nero's reign. Seeing as how Nero was after Claudius, that would mean that Brittania is already part of the empire.
Unless not everyone came here from the same time or at the same time.
It seems unlikely that the assassin has been there much longer than the player has. Otherwise he would either know about the golden rule or the whole place would have turned to gold already.
Also he doesn’t seem to have a clue that he’s trapped.
Shouldn't we be focusing on the fact the Magistrate said Rome has reigned for 8 centuries instead of "Oh they don't realise I'm English! This is obviously before Claudius!"
@@missingknight7955 Excellent points. It would explain some of the inconsistencies.
There was a fire in Rome in 47 AD while Claudius was emperor, actually there were quite a few fires in Rome
The Angles did exist 2000 years ago (or at least the tribe that the English got their name from), but rather lived on the Anglia/Angeln Peninsula (Engla land) in far Northern Germany. This is on the other side of the Jutland Peninsula to where the North Frisian language is still spoken today by the related Frisian people.
I would quite like more of this!
Also Jon, you haven't run past the white hallway. You will know it unequivocally when you get to it.
I remember playing the skyrim mod of this a few years back. Amazing mod.
The white hallway is very sci-fi looking, so it will be ovious when you find it, the other side of the hallway is very sci-fi and spoilery and has all the answers it is very late in the game. You can get some endings without ever entering it! Even one of the good ones!
Wow, if the white hallway is that late in the game, I'm surprised the devs chose it for the avoid spoilers point.
@@shotgunshells2 that's actually pretty smart though. That's probably were some major answers to what exactly is happening are like the time loop and where they are exactly, something that recontextualizes the whole story, haven't played it but that would seem likely. If anything that would be more incentive to go out and buy it after getting so invested in watching a playthrough up to that point. Also a game like this looks like you could miss some things in a single playthrough depending on the path you take.
Well, then we absolutely need more episodes with "Classics Jon".
@@johnyshadow is ..... is this a reference to a previous comment I made on his Death Trash video? Well I'm either very flattered or very vain, probably a little of both.
@@donovanfaust3227 If it is, it´s unintentional. But, I might have read that comment and it just stuck in my head. Who knows...
I remember playing the original mod so many years ago and it was really fun. Glad they came all this way and turned into a full game
Yes! Would love to see you play more of this, this is so fascinating!
really hoping jon would play this
A lot of the dialogue and plot points seem to rely on there being more than just 23 people living in this city. Things like bribery, intimidation, hidden relationships, extortion etc wouldn't be able to be kept secret with so few people around.
I was having the same thought as I was watching this then I remembered the RPG rule: Every NPC represents at least ten different people. Using that you can imagine that there are more like 230 people in the area which makes it make more sense. It's odd but I find it helps the suspension of disbelief.
@@_Hofnarr But they explicitly say 23 people live in the city. Also with the golden rule, I doubt that the city would be able to get a population of 30 people before someone sins let alone 230.
"I can loop money" sounds like something your IRS equivalent would love to know about
“That’s not stealing - I’m golden.”
Yeah… maybe not the best phrase for this game, Jon
Would love to see more of this in the future
40:14 “that’s not theft, we’re golden” I think the point is that your not golden
I hope this does well. Your video's are always at their best when you know what you're talking about; would love to see a full series of this.
Oh wow! That is really cool for content creators to know when to block spoilers for people. Very nice!
Jon, just want you to know you're the reason I bought and played this. Thank you very much, it was great!
Great video, saved to a playlist cause Jon finally puts their degree to use!
I heard A LOT about the game - so great that Jon decided to play it! :) Fascinating stuff! :)
It's a shame you can't continue this through the whole thing.
I am intrigued to see where the story goes, but it's not a game I can see myself playing.
This is SO COOL! I love the story and style, I'd love to see more episodes.
"Maybe I can break the rules!"
On no. Jon. You fooooool!
Kudos for the auto-follow feature! Even bigger kudos for a proper accounting of the Roman practice of decimation. Decimation does not mean the same thing as obliteration or annihilation yet seems to have assumed that identity in modern English.
That’s how language works for ya. It’s always strange to see people spurg out about certain modern usages for words when quite literally the entirety of how language and it’s evolution works based on the influence and distortion of what came before. All words we know and use came from another before it and it’s meanings ever changing.
@@SahiPie I like how you make our modern degenerations of proper language almost sound artful, even spiritual. Well played my friend.
@@phatbassanchor Etymology is a beautiful thing man, to box in language in a black or white viewpoint is a most saddening occurrence in recent times by those in pursuit of coming off as a pseudo-intellectual and not a practice for those more studied. The art of communication is one that is often times over looked and ignored while I feel that it should be encouraged and better understood.
@SahiPie We live in a day and age when even the simple joy of a cheerful "hooray" has been reduced to a guttural "woot." So, I'm bringing back Huzzah! Haha ;D There is nothing pseudo regarding my intellect. It is the intellect of those around me that seems to wane a bit more with each passing decade. You are obviously a rather bright young lady. So, I really meant no insult with any of my remarks. However, you seem to be the exception rather than the rule. It pains me to see the film Idiocracy become a documentary rather than a farcical comic fantasy. Every year the average IQ dwindles ever lower and the use and abuse of my precious English language becomes ever more tarnished and abused. This the world in which we now live, more's the pity.
Adventure on my friend, Phat
@@phatbassanchor Ah please do not misunderstand my mentioning of pseudo intellectual as some kind of dig directed to you. It was just a commentary on what I've been seeing so often online nowadays.
As a history major myself, love the commentary!
Would love to see more of this!!
This is actually really interesting. I expected nothing and never watched these.....but this is.......really interesting.
It took me awhile to realize why all of this seemed and sounded so familiar when it finally hit me I played this story in Skyrim. Despite that being mentioned in the intro.
Didn’t even realise they’d turned this into a game. From Jon’s approach so far I have a feeling he’s going to get the same ending as I did in Skyrim.
Skyrim has an ending?
@@SaURoN-lh1dl did you play this mod on Skyrim?? I meant the mod has an ending XD it has multiple I believe
@@chrisiveson4753 I know. It was a jab at vanilla Skyrims open-endy nature
@@SaURoN-lh1dl sorry man 😂😂 hard to sense sarcasm in text 😂
If Jon just said "to heck with video games, today is a video about my favorite part of Roman history" I'd be totally behind that.
What a fascinating game! I'd love to see Jon play more of it.
Could you bribe the guard with the bottle of wine?
Never got any interest in Skyrim, but this looks interesting. Though it's seriously creepy how they put aurified people into their houses as decoration!
Would you rather they litter the streets wantonly? Or you just have a pit where we keep our statues?
@@Silverhawk100 Also helps as a constant reminder not to break the Golden Rule.
@@TitanDarwin not to mention that the average volume of a human body turned into gold would weigh ~1200 kilos. Gold is a seriously heavy material especially compared to water, which the body is mostly comprised of.
@@RagingBadger68 Yeah, but I think it was suggested during the video that the golden statues are still mostly living people, just with solid gold replacing their skin? So they wouldn't be that much heavier.
@asdrubale bisanzio It's magic, it can do anything. You wouldn't expect a corpse that's been wrapped up in a tomb to stand up and Fus Ro Dah you, but that totally happens in Skyrim!
Ayyyyy!! I'm so glad you're playing this! Vale!
Oh my goodness moar please! I'm loving this!
This is the kind of video I live for! 😊
I always love it when Jon plays a game set in the ancient world :)
more of this please
I'll be honest, I literally saw 'Elder Scrolls' in the title, thought to myself "Oh my Gods, the prophecy has come true at last!" and clicked this. I still regret nothing.
The missing girl's voice was brilliant and hope-giving. Sentilla-ting
This is sooooo cool! It's beautiful to look at as well, and I love the mystery! Intriguing...
So I watched this and decided to buy it. 7.5hours later my body hurts from not moving for so long and without spoiling, I'm not even done yet. I cannot recommend this game enough.
We have an idea that it's early imperial even without the "from Galia to Judea" line. He's said Rome's existed for 800 years. If it's exactly 800 years, then that's 48 CE, which puts us in the middle of Claudius's reign, but even if we assume he's rounding, we're Tiberius-Caligula-Claudius-Nero.
And there you go. It's during the reign of Nero. (I also like the fact that when the archer accuses you of being a Christian and aims an arrow at you, you can just shout "Jesus Christ!" in shock.)
It's set in 64-65 AD, if I recall correctly. Several characters mention the Great Fire of Rome happening a few months prior.
Thank you MATN
I loved this mod for Skyrim and this stand alone version is even more fun and interesting. The graphics are wonderful.
Brb need to critique Asterix with this new knowledge of pillars
The white hallway is in the temple on the highest peak, so you should be fine for a while. You'll know it when you see it.
Technically there is a Latin word for "microwave", "proin", which I believe is also used to mean "as such" or "ditto", admittedly that is a modern addition done by the Vatican, and it would likely still sound off.
Wait, does the Vatican seriously add words so they can exclusively speak Latin?
A murder mystery set in an homage to Derinkuyu? Yes, please
this looks great so far id love to see more for sure
I didn't know you had a history degree! This will make the series more interesting
Several things, I suspect that sentilla is the woman you met at the beginning of the game who sent you after al.
Two why wouldn’t killing a peeled statue be counted as murder if they were the people trapped in the statues after the last cycle. For that matter why wouldn’t killing and eating that guy count.
Three oh god if the people in those statues are still alive and can’t die I feel so bad for the guy tied to the wheel and suspended over a fire.
And last the wine you found said it was possibly the last bottle of wine, I wonder if the gladiator might find that valuable.
For the "peeled" (God why) statues, my guess is that they are no longer considered people by "The Golden Rule", more akin to an animal. And animals can't commit crimes, and killing one isn't a crime.
i studied classical civilisation in college and holy shit you talking about columns brought it back hahaha
oh i remember playing the skyrim version of it
when i finally got the mystery solved i was so damn cheerful
Basic column identification guide
Doric think Dork as it looks like a scroll open half way
Corinthian looks like it has a potted plant at the top (they used to paint these things)
Ionic just a flat disk at either end
and if it has the indentions along the length of the column that's fluted. Fluted style was in style when columns were made in the corinthian style so if you see fluted on Doric or Ionic then that is a modern column
As long as you catch the moment you find the white hallway in editing and not upload past that you can keep playing.
Any chance for Jon to flex his degree is a good day.
Not quite the same, but watching this makes me want there to be a Kingdom Come Deliverance style Late Roman Republic/Early Roman Empire title. I really need to play KCD at some point, had it since Sept 2018 and not touched it yet.
I felt the same way. Dipped my toes into when I first played it but I was trying to finish off other games at the same time. The game required focus so I put it in the backlog and have wanting to play it since.
Go play it
@@devontufts1291 bro this is literally me. I played maybe 30 minutes or less and stopped

Aycktually those columns are composite I believe, as they have small scrolls as well as the foliage
We need more Roman games for Jon to dissect lol
Wonder how the economy works here, they talk about money and debt but that means you could loot everything and restart the loop over and over until you have a shit load of money and cause hyperinflation and crash the eceonomy.
Surprisingly cool game. Wasn't aware it'd been a mod before its standalone release.
Great video, would love to see you play through the rest of the game (or at least up until the white hallway)

There need to be more classics themed games for Jon to play.
Sad this won't be a full series but 100% understandable wish by the devs
