    Drove a taxi in Asheville to pay for college. Met a girl there. She lived on top of a mountain in Jackson county. Courted her. Married her. 60 years later had to lay her to her rest up high in the Smokys. Beautiful girl. Beautiful mountains. Where I met her was in her home town which had a gas station and a general store. Good grief, did we have fun. Miss her something awful. She was a graduate of a tiny k12 mountain school. Smartest person I ever knew.

      Thank you so much for sharing your story with us. I can feel the warmth in your words. I’m so glad that you had the opportunity to know her and to see her and that she knew your love. There’s something special in these mountains. 💓

    I was there about 10 years ago and it was just gorgeous as was Chimney Rock, Weaverville, Hendersonville, etc. I was definitely in the mountains. The road was very narrow and we were up about 4k up. I LOVE the Blue Ridge!

      Goodness, I am impressed you remember it so well! Yes, it is. Some roads can get a little hairy but those views fail to disappoint.

      @@livinginasheville I think visiting that whole area was one of the highlights of my life. I remember a sign along the French Broad River telling people that if the alert sounded, they needed to get to high ground as fast as possible because of mountain snow melts creating extreme flooding dangers. Wow!

      We don’t have so much snow these days… I’ve never even seen one of those.

    I totally hear you about never getting tired of the views. I've lived in western NC since 1993 and the views NEVER get old! And the hiking and outdoor opportunities are literally endless. So much beautiful nature to enjoy. So happy to be living here.

    I love how when people mention “Western North Carolina” all they ever see/hear/read is “Asheville”! There are SOOO many OTHER beautiful, rural, friendly places to live…Brevard, Cullowee, Waynesville, etc. How about a vid on those places. I realize the money’s in Asheville but not ALL of us like cities.

      I love your point! I am working on all of this right now. It just takes a little time. Remember I still do real estate while making videos so there has to be quite balance between getting all of these done and it doesn’t happen overnight. But if you tell me your most preferred list, I will make my way down and make a video on each and every one! 💕🙌😊

      @@livinginasheville Thank you, I appreciate the response. We may be relocating BACK to NC (we use to live in Fuquay-Varina and are living in TN for job reasons). I went to EMT school in Cullowhee (and Brevard) and fell in love with it!! I’ve always hated when people associate “western NC” with Asheville. It’s like associating all of NY with NYC!! NOT the same! Looking forward to the update!

    Okaaay. Asheville is IN western NC, but it is not mountainous. Yes there are hills and “mountains” but drive 1 hr west towards Jackson county, or if you head towards Franklin, you get actual mountains. Asheville is in a valley within the mountains. It isn’t the mountains.

    • @livinginasheville
      @livinginasheville  Рік тому

      Hi Mangle, Beth (third person, yes...) and GOOGLE say this: "Located in the French Broad River Valley and surrounded by the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains". So yes, you are correct, Asheville is not on the side of a Mountian. Any you know why you are not so impressed with their vastness? "As part of the Appalachian mountain range, the Blue Ridge mountains are the second oldest range in the whole world. Over 1 BILLION years ago, shifts in our Earth's tectonic plates caused the Blue Ridge mountains to form in a system of peaks and valleys that span eight states."
      Imagine how sharp you'd be after 1 billion years. ;) hehe.

      @@livinginasheville I knew this fact before you spilled it to me. Yes they are the second oldest in the world. But the reason I’m not impressed is the same as others.. I’ve traveled. This is not an impressive area, it is pretty sure. But I’ve seen prettier mountains and kinder people throughout the Appalachian mountains. I’ve traveled from their southern most part in Georgia all the way up to Vermont. I’ve backpacked the AT. I’ve seen.. better of this exact type of environment. My hometown is more lovely than this, cheaper, and arguably has more activities.. just not public housing or transportation. There is more infrastructure in Asheville and the surrounding towns than in most of WNC. However.. back to those mountains, I’ve been to Ireland and Scotland in the UK.. those mountains are the same range. In fact they are more northern than the ones in Vermont.. but with a more temperate and humid climate than even Georgia. THOSE MOUNTAINS, are as if they were encapsulated in time millions of years ago. Asheville is aight, it’s growing on me. But nothing can beat some of the experiences I’ve had in the same mountain range, maybe a few miles or a few hundred miles apart. But the same mountains.

      Used to drive a taxi in A'ville in 1960. Married a girl from a tiny town in the Balsams, the Smokies. Watched the area change. Would rather live in the back country, high up than Asheville. Only things we ever disliked was slow cars with out-of-state plates, and full of snobby travelers. We always hoped those folk would never come back. Some did.

      So expensive now , even when you shop at Engles , we go to Hendersonville now at a Population of 16 ,000 people . I-26 is dangerous were you are pulled in a single lane with concrete barriers on both sides . The Traffic going to and coming back is almost grid lock . I26 will not be completed for another 2 years . We go up there 4 times a year and to Waynesville These Small towns are Booming because of the cost of living in these Blue Liberal States . Most of the young generation from the NE Has moved to the Charlotte - Raleigh area for the high tech jobs . Down town Ashville is Ruined by the College kids , Asheville down town is the San Fran Sicko of the East . 40 years ago the downtown area was beautiful . But out side of Ashville is nice . Expensive , unless you have the big bucks . Do alot of Resarch before you deide to move up there , there are alot of smaller towns that are really nice .

    Do retirees sacrifice a lot in quality of healthcare in western NC vs, say the Triangle?

    • @livinginasheville
      @livinginasheville  4 місяці тому

      Possibly, the triangle has all the best medical research schools and facilities in the area. People go there when they have serious diseases. We have regional hospitals that can do most work, but if you have some thing like cancer, you would probably go to the triangle.

    I fell in love with you , your so cute , and I been planning to move just a few months out of the year just to escape the Hot HUMID HEAT OF FLORI- DAH . My two favorite towns are Waynesville , and Hendersonville , lots of people from South Fl has moved there , and have businesses in the downtown area . Now the prices of real estate in WNC is too expensive , I was shock to look at small homes under 1500 sq ft cost more than $ 450,000 . My house in Florida if it was up there would be over 1 Million . The locals in the small towns don't like Floridiots , but I can understand .
