I inherited an entire collection (300+ plants) INFESTED with thrips and soft bodied scale. I had amazing success swapping between products. Azamax one month, debug turbo the next. And randomly neem oil. Not the pre mixed spray type, cold pressed solid oil you have to melt down and add to water. It took about 3 months but eradicated the problem. I'm not scared of thrips anymore. *readies spray bottle* 🤣 (get you an electric spray bottle off Amazon, too!)
I had thrips once and just threw out the plant cause I didn’t know what to do. Well actually I didn’t know what they were. Glad you actually showed up close up pics of the bastards.
I've had a few run-ins with thrips now, never lost a plant but man do the plants take a dive for a while after treating. I live in Canada, and the product that works for me is Doktor Doom
I had thrips once, they spread to like five different plants. I washed the leaves with water and sprayed down the plants in general and then I used captain Jack's dead bug brew all over the leaves and stems. I left them quarantine for a week and went back for round two with captain Jack's and quarantined again for another week. I sprayed the whole plant again with just water and put them back where they belonged. It worked and thankfully I haven't gotten them again.
I bought myself a light-up magnifying glass when I found thrips. I used Captian Jack's Dead Bug Brew (Thanks for the tip Adam) and also a spray I found on the Liqui-Dirt UA-cam page. 4 cups water, 1/8 cup Tea Tree castile soap, 1/8 cup Peppermint castile soap, 1/2 tablespoon 1% peroxide, and 1/2 cup 70% alcohol. Treated by entire collection twice with 4 days in between (I used a pump garden sprayer). Worked like a dream!
I use the Bonide systemic granules, and other than spidermites on two of my Alocasia, I've been pest free for 2 years (80+ houseplants). They all get dosed on the same day... I just set a calendar reminder to notify me every 8 weeks. I do keep Captain Jack's DBB and Bonide Insecticidal soap on hand though. I steer clear of home-remedies when it comes to my houseplants. I think that there are a lot of different ways folks take care of pests, and I think you should do what ever works for you ("you" as in anyone).
Thanks Screw Tube for no notification. Hoping it’s all better now an no thrips on any other plants. 💚 I use the Bonide systemic an so far so good. Knock on wood.
I had them on my huge Thaumatophyllum bipinnatifidum and I used captain jacks and systemic granules re sprayed for a few weeks and then in last desperation I got a hot shot pest strip and isolated the plant in a big clear bag in a room I don't spend time in and let it stay in there with the strip for a few weeks. finally gone after that.
I’m dealing with thrips right now. I actually talked about this in Becca’s last plant clinic. I did a deep clean of my plants last month. I have 210+ houseplants so section by section I took them outside. I spray insecticidal soap in all the cover pots. I hosed off all the leaves and I used an organic leaf tonic that has pest deterrents in it. I left them on the deck overnight and re-examined before bringing anything back in. Any lingering issues I’ve isolated and used Cpt Jack’s on. I want to try Eight if anything persists though.
Thank you so much for showing the thrips so well! I don't think I ever had any but at least now I know what exactly to look for! You're right, the internet isn't all that helpful about the thrips! Thanks again for an excellent video!
I have thrips on a small spider plant, I unpotted the whole thing and soaked it upside down in a bowl with water, soap and alcohol. I’m keeping the plant in water for now, while I treat it. I’m doing 3 days in a row, waiting a week and treating 3 more days. Hopefully it’ll make it, so far the plant hasn’t minded the treatment but fingers crossed.
I use peppermint oil, alcohol and water. After a week I then spray on and message in the capt Jack's dead bug. It has worked last fall with initial outbreak. I think I may have them again, not sure, they look bad but have found no bugs. I was told they are more a five at nite and to check with flashlight then, UGH!!
I've had trips for a while. I kept them at bay with just water, soap and alcohol. Didnt kill them though. So now i have tried a type of beetle. They eat adult trips. Combined with a type of mite. They eat eggs and babies i guess. Got them 2-3 weeks ago and I havent seen any trips for at least a week. I live in Europe and it's difficult to get pesticides. Love my army of beetles and mites. :D (they don't hurt the plants)
@@grat2010 no I’ve never heard of that one. I just know the smell has a lot to do with the bugs and also pine sol is biodegradable. We work with whole sellers who told us this is how they keep the bugs off of their plants. And so far it kills every bug and does not damage the plant. But you have to use very very little pine sol.
I successfully got thrips off 6 different plants using just a sticky lint roller. They were on 3 monstera, bird of paradise, and 2 alocasia... I tried rinsing them with sprays and soap, but manual removal worked the best and did not stress the plant with too much moisture. If you think you have pests but you can't see them, try the roller. Check to see if any pests came off the leaves, they show up clearly on a roller. I like this cause rinsing and spraying is really hard on the plant if you have to continuously treat it. Wet leaves do not photosynthesize and plants that have pests and damage really need optimal conditions.
I had some window boxes full of flowers last summer get covered in thrips. I threw the whole thing in our fire pit 🤣 I didn’t want to chance it coming inside through my window and attacking my plants.
I have a magnifying glass with led lights, and they are awesome. Also, if you wonder if you have thrips or dust on your plant, push it with your fingernail. If it moves you have thrips.
I had thrips, but i had them bad. They spread through my entire collection before I knew what what happening. I used Captain Jack’s dead bug brew every four days for 6 full weeks on about 75 plants. It was a big job, but it worked. Hoping you caught yours before they spread!!
I've had thrips 2-3 times now, each time they've mostly only gone for my monsteras. Thankfully I found out before they had matured. Once that happens they can fly and lay eggs and they can easily wipe out a collection in just a few weeks. I use Captain Jack's DeadBug Brew and I absolutely love it! It got rid of the thrip larvae in one treatment each time (though you should still keep treating to be safe), and it wipes out spider mites just as easily. This is of course just my experience but Captain Jack's has saved me and my collection. I've sized down quite a lot at this point, but each time I had thrips I had 450-600 houseplants in my small bedroom so they easily could have spread like wildfire. I don't stress about thrips or spider mites now since I always have Captain Jack's on hand. It genuinely gives me such peace of mind when it comes to pests now.
@@grat2010 I have a small bedroom, about 120sq ft but the majority of my plants aren't too big. I've since downsized to about 250 established plants as I'm trying to grow plants out to chop and prop later on.

I‘d suggest putting the plant on newspapers, spray it there and throw the papers in the bin (our garbage gets burned). Stay safe and good luck against the thrips! 🍀
Finally, I can identify what's been sucking the life out of my Monstera. They came out of nowhere. I had to propagate her because the damage wasn't helping her thrive.
Weirdly, it's "thrips" whether it's singular or plural. I have a hard time saying thrips to refer to just one, so I always refer to it as plural. Good luck with yours.
Thanks for up close caption I did not know what the bug look like

I always spray my houseplants in the shower and hit them up with bug spray on occasion. I’m not going to eat them so that’s my reasoning for spraying.
I put Bonide granules in all my plant pots and stray the thrips I see with Captain Jack's.
