I do like bright, bold colours, as they immediately evoke joy and happiness, but there's a undeniable strong energy with those dark, muted colours you chose! Really amazing palette, I feel very inspired. ✨
This has to be one of the most relaxing videos -- seeing you swatch these beautiful colors, your soft voice and that lovely music. All so restful. Glad you are back. Thank you.
Wonderful landscape palette! As I paint mainly landscapes, I love the depth and texture of Daniel Smith paints. Landscapes are more about knowing how your paints interact with each other and with water, i.e. how much they spread, which ones take over, which are more subtle, which neutralize, which create natural effects, etc. Certainly one can mix colors themselves from a basic palette of transparent, non-granulating colors, but you then miss out on the organic effects that mimic the science and random texture of nature. Thanks for sharing your growth as an artist, Ono!
I find Transparent Red Iron Oxide very useful for landscape. Also Raw Sienna and Quin. Gold. Raw Sienna varies enormously across brands so there's lots of choice for that one. I'm also recently enjoying M Graham's Perylene Green. A useful landscape bright right now is DS's Lavender for shadows on snow. Generally speaking, my shadows everywhere are almost always violet, so I have/mix quite a few. Your choices are all luscious...not a wallflower among them...and your video has inspired me to run to the store, especially to try some of the granulating colors. However, most people have some sort of a budget for paint and also many new painters can become overwhelmed by too many paint choices, so it's great to know that most of these more neutralized landscape colors are easily mixed from brighter colors that may already be on your viewer's palettes. As you demonstrate these colors in future videos, it might be fun and useful to add a word about how each color could be mixed from commonly-used brighter colors and to remind your viewers that the "recipes" on the more neutralized colors' tubes can be helpful in that respect. Also, if one mixes one's own neutralized colors, one can usually add or subtract granulation (or other characteristics) from the target color by selecting for those characteristics from among constituent colors one already has. For example, to obtain a brown that will explode quickly across a wet page, Venetian Red is a good place to start. Another consideration is that mixing skills need to be kept current anyway. A new landscape painter who is planning on painting outdoors will find that she needs her mixing skills to be second nature... both because she won't be carrying much paint and because her paintings will probably dry faster out-of-doors than in the studio. Finally, even those without financial or studio space restraints might prefer to mix many of these colors to get the exact shade each painting needs...or to obtain what is my favorite moment of all in painting: when two colors mix on the paper, resulting in a passage of almost infinite color transitions between the two. I really enjoyed your video...such evocative colors...my mind moved among them from oceans to forests to deserts. Thanks very much.
Beautiful color selection...and delicious swatches. It could be the winter blues... Or it could be our age but all these colors speak to me too. Thanks for making such a nice video 😊
Prussian Green is a color I recently purchased and I LOVE how it mixes with Quin Gold and Quin Magenta! Just a fantastic color on its own, but it mixes really well.
Lovely subtle colours. Good to see this post. I have about half of these colours. I Can't do without a yellow shade for landscape, so its green gold or quin gold for me. I really like the kremer irgazine yellow rather than a mixed pigment version of green gold. Still pining for that serpentine loveliness, one of these days.... x
A delicious video in every way- hopefully it relaxed you a fraction at least of how much it does us all! I found myself wanting to follow along after you by a few moments, dropping pure water in the middle of each colour sphere, to see the blooming characteristics and the more diluted version of each! Thankyou for what you’re doing, it’s really special.
Ooh, Oto is back! I'm so looking forward to the Vlogmas-videos! But please don't wear yourself out. I also saw this shift in my colour preferences in use lately and I came to the conclusion that these colours are all over lately, they're quite modern in illustrations and especially items for children. Love the perylene maroon and perylene violet. A go-to colour for me is lately Phtalo Green with a tiny bit of sepia in it. And Indigo. And Quin Siena, especially watered down. And a mix of lots of Quin Rose and a bit of Yellow Ochre - such a beautiful shade of muted pink... I'm looking forward to your artistic explorations!! Did I mention that the music choice for this video was superb? Soo relaxing and subtly Christmassy. Could you tell me where to find it?
Who could not like this video with festive version of silent night going on the background accompanied with your soft voice and these lovely exquisite set of daniel smith colors…. I’m quiet mesmerized 🥰
Looking forward to you testing out these colors. It’s just so relaxing watching you so watch your paints the music you choose is amazing and your voice is so calming.
Thanks Oto. Beautiful colors. Sometimes I feel I want bright and sometimes I feel like soft muted colors. Depends on my serotonin levels. It's getting low so phthalo grn light and lemon yellow by sennelier are giving me a boost right now.😁💜
I loved this video session! Love the swatch design. My landscape palette has many of the same pigments, I also use raw sienna, yellow ochre and burnt sienna.
I enjoyed this swatching video very much. Wonderful selection of landscape pigments, but it didn't include the one color I cannot do without for landscapes or florals-- green apatite genuine!
yes several people have said that! I totally understand because it is a beautiful colors. I decided not to include it in my palette because it does that weird color split thing when you water it down.
Im loving your new videos! The two colors I absolutely love right now in the Daniel smith line for landscapes that you don’t have shown are Indian red (though the opacity can sometimes be an issue) and burnt tigers eye genuine. Green Apatite genuine is one I’m really enjoying as well but haven’t quite gotten used to. I recently got tigers eye genuine and it reminds me of German grn. Raw umber. It’s different and not quite what I expected though the more I use it the more I’m enjoying it. I really love DS genuine line!
Eee! Yes! I was just looking at your channel the other day wondering if I’d missed some of your recent videos. This was just what ai was waiting for: lovely swatch colors (terra vert looks amazing!) soothing voice, and slow jazzy Christmas music. Thanks for the early Christmas present of a new video! I will def. rewatch before adding any DS paints to my next purchase - probably after the new year. *sigh*
I loved it so much I was almost drooling over those gorgeous colors, lol. I also want to add love the circles swatch better too. Refreshing could be the word. Thanks so much!
Excellent...there seems to be a collective trend...I have loved these colors for some time.Darker, more neutral...I just bought the 35, and flower sets of Paul Rubens. I am happy as can be with the brightness suddenly too! Thank you for this content. It is delightful to find myself in a similar fashion with great artists.
Rewatching this masterpiece again, love seeing the beautiful and subtle colors from this palette! and I wish a future C. color showdown would be about cobalt turquoise/cobalt green turquoise(schmincke calls like this)-like colors, I mean, those deep blue green hues usually made from PB36
I have a theory about your shift 😃 Maybe working on tons of monochromatic work for the landscape class slowly caused your preferences to shift towards less saturation 👀 Nice to see your content again 😊 Lovely palette
Landscapes are my passion and I do have many of these paints - I love your "2nd studio palette" idea!! I notice that you aren't showing Green Apatite Genuine which is a favorite of mine. I'm just getting to know Zoisite and loving it! I also notice that you haven't included any "browns"?? Thanks for being out there!!!
I totally agree, there are lots of holes in this color choice, I am also lacking in good yellow/yellow ochres. I'll be updating this palette as I go along :)
I actually have some of the colors for your palette- haven't gotten into using them and have only swatched and experimented with mixing them together. I have been unhiding looking at fantasy artwork- kind of similar to LOTR universe, so these moody colors do speak to me. I just have to find a way of making art that has this fantasy feeling to it, but make it my own.
@@OtoKano Mayan Dark Blue, Cobalt Turquoise, and Serpentine Genuine. Such yummy colors. All of them will fit right in with my current palette. Although, I may need another palette box. :D

Off topic, but I love your channel! Your presentations are awesome, and your voice is so relaxing and watching you paint too! I am new to watercolor and I have done acrylics for years. My only problem is now I want every color you review. LOL!
Here's a question that's just struck me, and I don't know why it never has before. Does Prussian Green have the same peculiar fugitive issue that Prussian Blue does, do you know?
the Prussian Green from Daniel Smith has the same fugitive issues, but there's one from Schmincke that doesn't, they use PB60 instead of PB27 for the blue.
I will be changing my DS prussian green to the schmincke one! Thank you. I was just chasing colors when I put together this palette, so it's really good to think about these things now!
@@OtoKano I don't have Schmincke's Prussian Green (or Daniel Smiths) so I can't say how close the hue is to your Daniel Smith one. Hey there, brand new to this channel so apologies if this has been mentioned in past videos - does anyone have any ideas which paintbrush and paper she is using? TIA!
Well some of the colours could be mixed more or less from other colours but whatever 'level' you are at there is a case for having favourite hues and tones ready for use (that is an interesting and complex debate perhaps). Also there are granulations in some of these that are unique.
I totally understand some people love to create their own mixes all the time. Personally, I really don't have a problem with using convinience colors. We all have different opinions on whether to mix or not, that's the great thing about art, it all goes into our different styles.
Every artist doesn't like everything and everything related to creating art isn't their focus. Mixing colors and the calculations that go into making sure I have enough of what I need irritates me. It's the bottleneck in my creative process. There are no "rules" in how to create art.
