Thank you for sharing your updated palette. I do like the warmer yellow with the deeper greens and blues. It is always a pleasure to hear your voice and your views on colors and brands. I used to only use Daniel Smith, but after the controversy, I have invested in Schmincke, Roman Szmal, A. Gallo, and recently Isaro. These brands vary in price, but all are devoted to quality and my experience with their customer service has been excellent. The Daniel Smith thing with John Cooley was disheartening, like seeing your favorite teacher bully a child. The arrogance and condescension to professional artists (their customers, by the way)and scientists was so off-putting, I have a hard time using their paints. The upside is that there are so many wonderful options for creating beautiful art that I don’t miss those paints much. Your color/ brand comparison videos have been really helpful for exploring new and broader horizons. Thank you!

I've been really obsessed with indigo and have been collecting it across all of the brands. My favorite hues are Holbein and Turner, despite also really enjoying Schmincke and Blick's versions with the genuine indigo pigment. Holbein is also just what I expect. And my favorite grey is also a mix with PV19 and a Sap or Hooker's Green.

I've never really appreciated "color theory" until watching your videos. The turning point for me, was when you explained that different palettes are created for a reason. So I got out my barely-used Prismacolor watercolor pencils & went "color-swatch-crazy" ...lol.
I was shocked at how many different colors could be achieved with 12 colors. Finally, with your help, I've "seen the light" regarding color theory...lol. Thank You!!
I used to consider color theory a "chore", ...but it has quickly become "addicting" (in a good way) & I'm doing daily color swatches. I'm now thoroughly loving "color theory".
I want to express my appreciation for you and your inspiring and educational videos!!

I have a love affair with ultramarine blue. 🔵 It simply hypnotizes me. Especially in it's mass tone. It's the hue and saturation that attracts me so much. It plays so nicely with other colors. And the beautiful granulation in lighter washes and when mixed with other colors is the cherry on top for me.

Just switched to watercolour so rediscovered an old "Maimeru Blu" set 💙... im crazily in total love
With the Pure depth of the Colour mixes from the Blues &
VERY reminiscent for me of Hot European countries and Swa shades...not found anywhere else.
There's not a warm yellow though just a lemon yellow...
So I will save up to get their full palette box.
I ADORE Ultramarine like the lady above
To give me the Scottish skies- purples & violets from it.
I'm kinda just not there yet...as going to classes!!
In comparison my half pan Sennelier just doesn't have the same ability to whack a punch as my Maimeri does.
Thanks Dr Oto for Amasing videos. 🥰👍

It is very nice to see your paintings on your channel on the one hand, and on the other hand I love seeing other artists’ palettes that are very different from my own.
I am working on a series with a fixed palette: French ultramarine, cerulean (pb35), permanent alizarin (that I mixed on my own from pv19, pr179 and pr178), burnt umber, benzimidazolone yellow (py154), and viridian. I love what this palette can do, but I am looking forward to start a new series with other color choices, because I am tired of mixing the same grays of the same four ingredients.

It’s cool to see how our preferences change over time, and this video highlights that pretty well. If I had to make my list of favorite/most useful colors, it’d probably be something like this (only the top 2 are properly ordered):
    Potters Pink
    Quinacridone Red Light
    Ultramarine Blue
    Hansa Yellow Light
Phthalo Turquoise (I do also like Cobalt Teal for cyans).
    Anthraquinone/Indanthrone Blue
    Burnt Umber
    Dioxazine Purple
I don’t use these colors often, but I love the hues of my other pinks/magentas (gamma PV19, PV42, PR122, and PV14).

It's really tough to narrow down my all time favorite watercolors... but I've been using Naples Yellow Deep/Potter's Pink/Manganese Violet/Amethyst to light golden hour scenes and I don't know what I'd do without them! I think my color tastes have been maturing over the past couple years too. I recently booted Phthalo Green Blue Shade off my palette in favor of M Graham's Viridian (still strong for Viridian, but softer than Phthalo for sure) and I'm liking it way more than I expected. Sennelier Venetian Red has also become a go to for portraits where I used to prefer brighter transparent colors.
My favorite color that I've taken off my studio palette is Sennelier's French Vermillion. It tints out from a strong warm red to a lovely peachy pink that's a touch cooler than PR255? But I just ran my lightfast tests and those tints are not holding up :( I just put QoR's Quin Red Light PR207 in my window to see how it holds up and it's quite promising. Imagine if Quin Coral was more orange! It's just lovely.
I know what you mean about trying to move away from Daniel Smith though! If any brand ever releases a tube form of Roman Szmal's new Quin Scarlet or even just offers PR175 I'm definitely switching out Deep Scarlet. I've also had a bunch of duds when it comes to binder split so I definitely want to move in a direction I can trust more!
I'm going on for waaaaaaay too long here, if I find some spare time maybe I'll do a palette tour video myself one of these days lol

Happy to hear that your opinion on Daniel Smith has shifted and you don't focus on it anymore!
Back when I was getting into watercolour, I spent hours on doing research on different brands and I couldn't help but feel like many creators treated DS like the "default" brand. The best brand, the brand that everything else got compared to. I've always found that quite unfair as every reputable watercolour manufacturer has something good and unique to offer.
Please don't get me wrong or (God forbid) take it personally - I really appreciate your DS comparisons, they helped me a lot! But I definitely prefer the variety on your channel now :)

Thanks so much for sharing some of your completed artwork. It was lovely to see. I love nickel azo yellow because of how it seems to transform from warm to cool as you thin it out and because of the cool way it interacts with other colors. This unpredictability is fun in abstract art but might be frustrating in portraits or botanical realism. Perylene green, perylene maroon and perylene violet all feel kind of magical to me. And my DaVinci phthalo green (pv7) is a workhorse that gets used in a lot of mixes.

Thanks for this. If I look at the colours that are quicker to go empty in my palette, these are Hansa Yellow, Quin Rose, burnt Sienna and Cobalt Blue. Not intentional list... just being factual. Your video got me thinking into developing a proper list. I like how intentional and conscious are about each choice, and I want to do that too. I really like your petite abstract paintings, they also show the intentionality in the choice of colours. Also, good for rethinking your stand in DS paints and company. I share your concerns and have stayed away from it -but I will use the few paints of them that I do have. Not using them is a waste, and I am not OK with that. Have a great week!

Great info as usual. Thanks! Yes, yes! I’m so in line with your 2022 choices, even though I don’t have them all or have them in the same brands! Quin Rose #1 yay! For all of us who love Opera pink so much but won’t risk the fugitive pigments, Quin Rose is the next best thing, I think. And this year, for me, is when I really began to appreciate the deep loveliness of Indigo. In paint, I only have it in WN gouache and a Derwent Inktense pan set color. I’ll have to add the Holbein indigo to my watercolors. I “feel ya” on the DS controversy, with their never coming out give a satisfactory answer to their customers. I still buy some of their paints, but I honestly think I might buy more if that “less than satisfactory” response to evidence of not selling what they represented as “real.” I have also begun to appreciate the range of beautiful orange colors. From a dot card, I came across “Aussie Red Gold” that outshines (so bright & vibrant) several different brands of Quin Gold that I have and has come to be one of my fave colors ahead of Quin Gold. Here’s the pigment info on Aussie Red Gold from the DS website:
    Pigment: PY 83, PR 101, PV 19 | Series: 2
    Lightfastness: I - Excellent
    Transparency: Transparent
    Staining: 2-Low Staining
    Granulation: Non-Granulating

I enjoy your videos very much. I have a mixed palette of brands also and am a fan of the quin rose from DS myself. After comparing many tubes I have found that DaVinci really makes great quality and excellent savings compared to some other brands. I use the Hookers green from DaVinci but like to temper it with MGraham’s sap green. I use perylene green from DaVinci and can achieve that dark green with mixing. Other than those greens I use Phalogreen and DaVinci has both shades. I love the warm yellows also and try to get the most lightfast and transparent. I also am a huge fan of the red iron oxide from DS and indigo from Holbein. Awesome picks! I too was disappointed with DS but still use 4 of their colors. Primarily I do not want to harm life in the water and in reading of some of the “gem” colors from their warning labels it steered me away from using those. Also I guess they found a way to not have the tube spit out as soon as it is opened. One other issue I noticed in comparison with other brands is the amount of shrinkage in filling whole pans. The thickness just isn’t the same. I have probably compared well over 200 whole pans. Anyways there are certainly a number of great brands out there.😊

Holbein colors are what I learned to paint with, so they will always hold a special place in my heart. Two of my very favorite colors of all-time are Holbein’s Mineral Violet (but I adore D.S. Rose of Ultramarine. The way that and Cascade Green split just give me goosebumps!) and their Sap Green. I have primarily all Daniel Smith pigments, due to their large number of single pigment colors, quality and their vibrancy, but I am curious why you are having issues with them as a company (quality aside). I am going to have to do some research into the issues you mentioned in this video. I love your colors , too btw. I hated seeing Quin coral leave your top 8, but sure get why Quin rose is your number 1!!! Thanks as always for another extremely well thought out video!

interesting video, i'm surprised how many secondary and tertiary colors are on this list. hard to say about my favorites, for sure ultramarine blue is #1. for yellow i used to love Winsor & Newton's new gamboge, since the change, i go for anything with a similar hue, although they are very much specialty colors i have to have buff titanium and caput mortem, the former for birds and later for flowers-add it to all the greens and purples in plants.

The idea of having to choose favorite colors feels rather daunting to me 😅 I absolutely love using Green Apatite Genuine and Serpentine Genuine from DS for greenery for example. Maybe those can definitely be in my top 10 because I include it in every palette I try to make lol.I love the moody look Lunar Blue and Lunar Purple for any scenery for shading and more, ooh, right, I love Perylene Violet and Perylene Maroon, I’ve put those two in an Earthy looking palette together with Nickel Azo Yellow and Green Rich Gold
But on the other hand I do love Quin. Rose, Quin. Pink, Quin. Violet and such. Also Cobalt Teal, Turquoise and other teals, turquoises, blues like Prussian blue, Indigo (both the rather dark blue kind as the rather muted dark, dark greyish blue that doesn’t look like it should be described as a blue), Antwerp Blue (W&N), all violets and purples (love Pupurite Genuine!) and lots of pink and yellow.
Although for some reason I don’t often use a yellow in my art, it is one of my favorite colors, just realizing that it doesn’t often end up in my paintings

Thank you so much for this video!! I’m so happy you’re loving Nickel Azo Yellow as well 😃. My “limited palette” or 6 “must have” colors are Ultramarine Blue (Any brand, I’m using QOR), Phthalo Blue Turqouise (DS, another brand I’d be open to trying!), Quinacridone Rose (DS, WN permanent rose seems to be Very close, if anyone knows of a QOR equivalent please let me know!), Burnt Sienna (QOR, but any brand), Dioxazine Purple (QOR, I prefer a granulation free pigment for my florals to the granulating version I can mix with Ultramarine Blue and Quin Rose), and of course Nickel Azo Yellow as my die-hard all time favourite yellow (QOR or DS).
Again, if anyone know of a PV19 Quin Rose (DS) or Permanent Rose (WN) equivalent in QOR please let me know!

    My current top eight:
    1. WN French ultramarine
    2. WN transparent yellow
    3. WN quinacridone magenta
    4. DS hematite violet genuine
    5. WN rose dore - never seen anyone else using this colour
    6. WN cerulean blue
    7. DS green apatite genuine
    8 WN Prussian blue
This is just my top eight, not a recommended palette - they're just my favourite eight of the 18 colours I have squeezed out on my Mijello palette. If someone bought me a fancy brass eight pan palette, I'd be populating it with a balanced palette of eight colours , which is not the same as picking my eight favourites.

    • @B.Duncan
      @B.Duncan Рік тому

My issue with Daniel Smith has nothing to do with the quality of it's watercolors. My issue is that when Daniel Smith started they undercut the prices of all the independent mom and pop art supply stores and the majority went out of business. I still patronized them because they had great products and a quality catalog that was very informative as far as papers and other products that were carried. It wasn't until later that DS started making paints and I thought they were good paints. I also noticed that the quality of some of what DS sold started going downhill. I'm sure DS started looking for less expensive, and lower quality, products to maximize profits. DS had a great store but then they closed the store and now all you can get are the paints. The product is good but DS has become a soulless corporate entity. That's my issue. There are other paint manufacturers out there that make just as good, if not better, paints.

I like yellows ans blues more and with just quin rose i can get many out of it.
    My Top would be:
    Nickel Azo Yellow
    Prussian Blue
    Indanthrone Blue
    Quin Rose
    New Gamboge
    Green Gold
    English Red Ochre
    Sepia
i have a love-hate-relationship with nickel azo yellow. it has amazing effects when used wet in wet, it looks amazing but it unpredictable.
Sepia is not that great for mixing, but often use it alone and so it needs a spot on my list.
i probably use more phtalo green ys than green gold, but only for mixing other greens. i hate phtalo green ys by it's own but love green gold.
Same with Phatlo Blue GS. Insane blue for very vibrant colours, but i just the other blues more.
And i have s special shoutout for:
    Naples Yellow
    Quin Coral
    Manganese Blue Hue.
As a very fine wash they are beautiful to draw white objects.

Daniel Smith wasn't very forthcoming about the formulation of Primatek, could it have been industry confidential information? Also ground minerals sometimes, unless treated, do not show up as the color you see in the intact stone. Personally, though I like the color of jadeite and amethyst, I don't use them. There are less expensive similar colors and to me it seems you might eventually make such minerals more rare if everyone was grinding them up for pigments.

They apparently mix other pigments in with some of their colours. The Magnanese Blue Hue apparently had fluorescence in it (and thus partially fugitive). There were also some issues with lightfastness of some paints being questioned. Meanwhile the Primatek line had as little as 10% mineral according to a geologist and the remainder included other pigments. When they reached out to Daniel Smith, the CEO gave a condescending and snarky reply that of course paints have binders and aren't 100% pigment without really addressing the heart of the issue: Trust. People are now questioning if they can trust the brand and the way the company is run.

CrimsonArrow wow daaang. So this sounds like undocumented colors within a mix? Makes me think of how they put different preservatives and additives into food without listing it. Causes some people problems. Like me. (like since when did Stevia become something you didn’t have to acknowledge putting in your food? Stuff is rank.). But D: I really don’t like that somebody gave that sort of answer at all! It feels like a very politics kind of answer, not owning anything but just making excuses.

CrimsonArrow BTW thank you SO much for responding to this. It was really bugging me to think that there was something whack going on. And I don’t need to throw my money towards brands that function poorly. There’s so many brands I would rather support ones that are better. (((there’s a comment I read and cannot find it for the life of me recently, but one of the brands sounds like it’s run by a person like that… They were very evasive and borderline rude to somebody who reached out, regarding lightfastness testing or pigments or stuff. One of the major pigment/LF people. They dodged a very important question and gave a BS answer also. The founder was described in medias as a guy who was a regular renaissance man, multi talented or whatever. And frankly I smell a narcissist (yet there was no evidence of these things it was mostly talk). And I definitely do not want to support anything at the hands of people like that.)))

    • @crimsonarrow
      @crimsonarrow 2 роки тому

@@lurklingX Glad I could help. Yes I think that is the problem. Some folks still really love their products though they find it hard to support a company in good faith when this is their behaviour.
I am one of those people who really care about the chemicals inside the paints and try to stay away from toxic pigments for the sake of the environment and health. However if they're not disclosing what they're mixing together with the paint, it really makes people quite uncomfortable about trusting them. That on top of the premium prices they charge for their paints as well.
There was a post on Jackson's with an interview with the CEO from July 2021 and there were a lot of people who weren't happy in the comments though it doesn't look like the CEO wanted to follow up again and address the concerns.

    • @lurklingX
      @lurklingX 2 роки тому +1

CrimsonArrow personally, when I first got into watercolors Daniel Smith was the touted end all be all awesome paint…. But my experience when I’ve gotten the tubes is that there’s separation of binder, bubbles sometimes, things that look like inconsistent quality which I was very surprised and dismayed about. And yeah they certainly do charge an arm and a leg. One of my greater concerns was LIGHTFASTNESS. And they were reported to do in-house testing, so you should be able to completely trust their assessments… However, on sites like KimCrick, you can see that some of their assessments are not correct. Not saying they are as bad as for instance white nights used to be with assessing things top notch and having them go through horrible fugitive fadeouts like the pigment “golden“… but still it makes you wonder when they assess something as lightfast like shadow violet yet they’re using a fugitive pigment in the mix. :( but then you get a company like da Vinci, where so many of their paints are rated LF2 like they don’t care about lightfastness… But are they perhaps being more conservative in the estimates? (it’s a little dismaying how many are marked LF2, especially pigments that *should* be LF1). It’s a little hard to know where to turn. I must say that for tube consistency, Da Vinci and M Graham have both been stellar. As well as Schmincke and Winsor & Newton. But then like I said Da Vinci seems to not put a high priority on lightfastness potentially… and personal pet peeve, they don’t HAVE a dot card sheet so you can experience all of the paints and select via educated guess. AND They don’t have a chart of their pants, which is helpful when you can compare the shades against the other shades, and also see what pigments and opacity are. You have to go on each individual color’s information on the website. (Ok done). 🎨✨ What are your go-to paint brands and why? And what do you avoid and why? 🙂

According to what I’ve discerned over the last year or so, there was an independent website that analyzed Daniel Smith’s Primatek®️ colors and assessed that the makeup of the actual paint contained VERY little of whatever mineral/gemstone they were purporting to have in them. When the testing results were brought to the DS CEO’s attention he put out a written statement that read to many loyal customers as terse, irritated, and overly defensive, nor did it offer any apology or proposed solution for the proven issue. Since these are very expensive paints mainly because of what they’re claiming are their main component (i.e.Jadeite), this rubbed many fans the wrong way, so much that some of them stopped supporting the brand all together.

Shove Mink is spot on. It was a geologist who noticed the primatek paints included undisclosed pigments and were not just the mineral in the name. IIRC in the response DS said they added pigments or altered to maintain consistency across batches. Which in and of itself isn't a problem, but not disclosing every pigment present is shady for artist grade paints. In that statement I think they also claimed their paints are just pigment and gum arabic, which is both condescending and nonsense because commercial and handmade watercolors at least need some humectants. The statement didn't have to be condescending and defensive, but it certainly came across that way to me. Not a deal breaker for everyone, but like others who saw the CEO's statement I started exploring other brands and buy DS a lot less now.
