  • More feelings and explanation on why I don't recommend Cus D'Amato's peek a book boxing style for most fighters. Basically, I think its movement is inefficient and not a good fit for most body types.

Personally, I'm small so I do study and practice peek a boo style. If I was tall, it would be non sens indeed. I do agree, it uses a lot of energy and it requires tons of time of practice before starting to obtain decent results. This being said, this style actually helped me so much improving my boxing skills. I guess there are some pros and cons in all style !! :)

My first coach tried to teach me peek-a-boo. I also argued that it didn't fit my body type and preference to fight primarily as an out-boxer. Coincidentally, he once had Tyson's body shape, back when he was a bodybuilder. I had a lot of problems with the stance and movement. He also really focused on old-school Rocky Marciano style and similar.
Years later, I only use it as a last resort. Most of the time I never let people in close enough to me to actually have to use it. Peek-a-boo is more for in-fighters. Similar to Mexican style swarmers. A lot of it is really rooted in old school shorter heavyweight fighting, but some people can be better off with foot movement and long reach. Anthony Joshua has a reach that is nearly 10" over Tyson. We saw what happened when he tried to fight inside with Ruiz Jr. the first time. He got crushed. He came back fighting the way that he should have as an actual (out-)boxer (not fighter) and won the second time.
Mike Tyson's reach is shorter than Ruiz Jr. Tyson was at that threshold where he could in-fight like a shorter boxer with much of the speed, but had the power of the taller heavyweights. Tyson used it against taller opponents, but had the leg strength and conditioning to get low enough to use it on almost everyone else.
Peek-a-boo is probably best for shorter in-fighters that make up for foot movement with upper-body movement. Since there aren't many who are shorter than I am, it's not effective for me in most cases, but I still train it a lot because I know that there will be times that I need to cover up and stay low to dig in hard on an opponent. But most of the time I just leap around like AJ and let them run out of breath trying to catch me (many in-fighters are rather flat footed and lack mobility).

      @zborgerd 4 роки тому +4

@PogChamp He was very much set in his ways. I appreciate some of his training, but you are right. The better coaches tend to focus on letting people work with numerous "right" ways of doing things rather than insisting that there is only one right way.

@@expertboxing I found that it really depends on your body type. If you aren’t short and muscular like Tyson, it will not feel comfortable. Tyson was an endomorph, so me being a mesomorph, it doesn’t really suit my body type. My knees would often burn out and I’d get tired pretty easily. Also, for you to use this style properly, you have to have A LOT of focus. If you have even just a little bit of lack of focus, you will not be moving properly This fighting style is really meant for you to finish your opponent in the early rounds. I feel like fighting styles really depend on the individual. If you’re able to flow perfectly with a fighting style, then you should stick to it. Tyson pretty much had all this by instinct.

I agree with you. Even Teddy Atlas didn't teach it after he left Cus. I know nothing about Atlas as a trainer, I'm only mentioning it since you're talking about it. I think Atlas said it's so demanding a style you can only use it well for a couple of years. Mike happened to have developed and filled out early and few guys with such athleticism would waste it on a 2 year career with injuries. Tyson learned as a child from the creator and so his body also adapted to it after 6 years of training. He also went on to have one of the shortest boxing careers. Seems like there's really a lot of sadness around the Cus story. The old guy was trying to give them what he never had and he didn't even get to see Tysons debut, which is honestly fucking heartbreaking. :(

I am a very short heavyweight and I've been practicing this style for about 2 or 3 years and since I'm only five eight I usually deliver a body shot unless someone is stupid enough to bring their head down a few inches. It was only energy consuming for about a month then when I got into the ring for 8 rounds I noticed that even though I am pretty hefty and overweight but it was so much easier for me to move and slip in for a nice punch. I had to quit for about 5 months because of something with my back but after that I went back and I'm doing just fine now. You are right about some of these and especially the body type. I have relatively short arms but I use head movement and legs to slip my way into the weak spots. But all in all I think it is a pretty fitting style for me. Great video though

What do you mean? Would you like to elaborate on that?

Neither Floyd Patterson nor Jose Torres had the benefit of Tyson's body type and both became world champions using this style. Three guesses who trained them both and the first two don't count. Tyson stopped using this style when he became emotionally unstable. End of story.

Both Patterson and Torres are short. 3 champs in the entire history of modern boxing with that style...and the most notable of them all had stylistic issues with it EVEN IN HIS PRIME. The PAB style, like every other boxing style, has weaknesses. Get over it.
This channel is for serious boxers to learn about real-world style advantages & disadvantages. Not the place for overly-emotional attached butthurt fanboys keyboard-debating. If you're even a real boxer, you belong in a gym and working on your craft. If you're just a casual fan, then you belong on some Tyson hype video. Either way, this channel obviously ain't your place.

@@expertboxing No. Patterson was 6 feet tall, which is not short for that era. Torres was 5'10" which is also not short for a light heavyweight of that era, and Torres, in fact, started as a middle weight. I'm retired. I don't think spending all day in the gym at the age of 61 is going to be productive. If you're really trying to get people to learn, you actually have to teach something instead of standing around, running your mouth, wearing boxing gloves for six minutes. You are hilarious, though. Keep up the good work.

You obviously don't know jack shit about the fighters you preach. Get yo ass on Google and do at least basic research to know he's small. Listed height ain't shit, ppl felt he was even shorter than Frazier.
And since you're that far behind, you can actually watch my channel to know that I teach and demonstrate many things. Not every video is a technical demonstration. Some videos are simple Q&A like this that I answer for my worldwide fans. Because that's what I do...doing my best to answer every student.
So THANK YOU for racking up views and adding commentary (which makes me $$$)...but your shitty attitude and blatant lack of knowledge isn't welcome. GTFOH. *peace*

Says "I never trained the "peek-a-boo" style, I never, like, officially learned it from anybody... I've never had anybody try to teach it to me..." Proceeds to do nothing but wear a pair of boxing gloves and bash what he never learned or trained for the next 5 1/2 minutes. Very entertaining. I haven't laughed so hard in months.

Only thing funny is how the entire video went over your head. It's not hard to see a style's inefficiency from the outside.
