On day 6 of alcohol detoxing. The past few days have been rough as far as the withdrawal symptoms goes. Me as a personal trainer and my knowledge of health and fitness, and nutrition has helped a lot. The withdrawals at this are like a 3 on a scale of 1-10, it's more of the cravings for alcohol that I fight with. But I always keep something healthy and hydrating on hand to kick those craving and or some cranberry juice mixed with seltzer water just to trick my taste buds and my mind into thinking I'm having an alcohol drink.
I am on Twitter now, daily posting to alcoholics both in recovery & still drinking. These videos are still the Best , which is why I show them to other alcoholics.
Well, I have started adding this one also- for the Facebook Recovery Group, we seem to have way more alcoholics all over the world wanting sobriety than drug addicts in our Group. This Video, I gave to a woman who had never even HEARD the word detox In England , where Drs, seem to pass them off to therapists & try to get them to cut down (never worked in my personal experience trying that) . So Thank you again, you have the most reassuring comforting voice and just anyone, can understand things the way you explain them. To me, you're 100% The Best at This !
Great stuff Andrew! I was in detox for three weeks, then I went to a rehab facility. You have explained the detox process very well. As you stated, it’s the first step of recovery. It is a process. One never graduates from addiction. We have a daily reprieve contingent on spiritual conditioning. (AA)
I’m currently going through moderate withdrawal. Whoever is reading this that’s going through addiction , please seek help, believe me when i say you don’t want to go through this shit hell , i was in denial for YEARS that i was an alcoholic, I’m 25 years old so i blamed it on my Youth & said i was just partying like any other young person, cut to me driving to the store at 8 am and drinking a whole thing of vodka a day to stay sane, withdraws are no joke , it’s not like a hangover, it’s completely worse, my mom had to help me showerast night , we can overcome addiction
Hope you’re able to get the help you need to able to go through this safely. Even when setbacks occur, as frustrating and as painful as they are, use them as opportunities to learn and keep pushing forward. Thank you for sharing and being so encouraging to others even when going through a challenging time yourself. Speaks volumes about the nature of your kind heart.

I was in detox at my hospital for 4 days, got released was given HYDROXYZINE after my release, I felt fine all day and BOOM out of nowhere a pale white anxiety attack that felt like death hit me, had to wait for the meds to kick in. The following day, same thing. I think people don’t realize that the final days of withdrawal are filled with anxiety attacks. Tomorrow is my 2 pill day, then Monday is my one pill day and I’ll be done and complete with my 7 day detox. 4 in hospital, 3 at home. Insomnia sucks.
Hydroxyzine is pretty standard treatment for anxiety while in detox and shortly after. Did they not give you a benzo taper (Librium or Ativan) after you were discharged?
@@bmartinTAthey have not been doing that lately they have been giving gabapentin or hydroxyzine. Both of those medications suck. They barely touch the anxiety which is crippling.
Definitely. Getting through the initial acute detox is just the start. I didn’t have time to explain some of the prolonged symptoms like ongoing sleep problems, cravings, etc as well as trying to avoid triggers, high risk relapse scenarios. Stay strong, thanks for the feedback.
After a relatively long period of constant,moderate-to-heavy drinking, I took a couple weeks without alcohol. I honestly hadn't realized that I was going through alcohol withdrawal until I looked at the symptoms and evaluated some weird things happening in my body. Fortunately, because I was young and because my drinking wasn't "too bad", my withdrawal symptoms were relatively mild and made more of a rough week than anything approaching a medical emergency.
Excellent presentation Dr. Kim. An acquaintance is detoxing for the at least the 3rd time in 6 months. He refuses additional follow up care (counseling, therapy, support groups, AA and etc). After about 6 weeks or so, he's right back in trouble again. As of today, he is in the 3rd day of 4 at a local hospital going through the detox process again. He's lost his job and a warrant is out for his arrest. Sad.
Day 121 and I got curious. I only just realized how careful the nurses were being and how much they were watching me for something bad to happen when I was in the hospital and I decided to find out how bad it could have been so I did some research. Feeling lucky and blessed at how minor my symptoms were. The only thing that seemed to happen to my was my ability to walk regressed to that of a toddler for a few days (I just could not find center on my feet and balance myself without wobbling) and I lost a lot of stamina. Hoping my good luck continues and well wishes to all who are going through detox.
only at night yes. I have a day job. not the most graceful swan at the ballet when sober. would not want to try driving in traffic or working during the day at my job while drinking.
@@The_Duck_Is_Angry My thoughts are that the toddler was in a sense you. The regression as your brain shrank took you back to a moment of trauma. Common in alcoholics when the brain shrinks due to constant bathing in alcohol, is the opening of past wounds. We feel we might be able to cope with it now, after so much suppression and weakness, and of course other people can. But not us.
Yeah I’ve been drinking a lot since I was 21 . I’m now 43 . I’ve done meth for like 18 years . I quit meth at 40 so I been clean from that for 3-4 years . Meth is horrible I’m proud of myself for walking away from that . After I quit meth I got into alcohol a lot more even tho when I was on meth I still usta drink a 40oz or two a day but since I quit that I felt pretty good about myself . Now I drink like 15 beers a day . Been getting really sick and can’t find myself anymore . I decided to check myself in and get help . Hopefully it works out . It will work out im dedicated to fix my life . Can’t live like this anymore .
@Matthew Hargis I’m doing good . I had quit drinking for 46 days and I needed that . Now I don’t abuse it like I use to . I have to take care of my responsibilities now and every once in awhile on special occasions I’ll have a drink like normal people lol

Going through day 2 of detox, have been heavy drinker for years, last year got even worse when I mixed it with pot. Tbh, after this video I feel a lot better, that people are understanding thanks to you Dr. Kim, I know what you recommended, but sadly at this stage I cannot afford to tell anybody of my friends/family circle, need to go through this in a home-based enviorment. Need to know, if DT makes you completely unaware of your surroundings, meaning: is it possible for example to start drinking from confusion, call a friend, or you still have some mindset left? (sorry for my English, but its not my first language).
Alcohol is really a difficult drug to deal with, l've been battling the addiction for a few years now, not until I recently got introduced to shrooms... ever since my first trip everything changed.
I'm really tempted on sending links to these videos to my step-dad because he thinks I can just quit cold turkey and when leaving a detox place you are all set to just quit with no problems. He doesn't understand the complexity of detoxing from alcohol.

I'm surprised you didn't mention phenobarbital. Last time I was in ICU for withdrawal, they gave me that, it was like an off button for the shakes and vomiting.
Oh yeah I was on that my first withdrawal. Then my second one was Ativan and sarax. Then my third one was Ativan and sarax and then I had acute pancreatitis so also Dilaudid and fentanyl which barely touched the pain. I'm good now though.

I go in tomorrow. I'm scared just about being sick. I quit once before on my own but a loved one tried to end my life. I relapsed after that experience. I feel horrible about embarrassing myself by being unwell in front of people.
I stopped drinking because I was sick and tired of wasting away physically and mentally. I had to be honest with myself and decide to choose for a life of success or a hellish drunk life. I choose to be successful because I REALLY wanted that and the only way to reach that goal was stop drinking and use my time and effort to build up my life in all possible aspects. And if you really work hard to try and reach succes in life there won''t even be time to drink in the first place. That was my motivation and way to do it. The first step off course was the 7 day withdrawal which I did cold turkey. It was hell the first three days but then it got better bit by bit. I knew I could die but I took a gamble on that issue.
Don’t worry about the nightmares and the other stuff you will feel extremely nauseous for 7-8 days strong headaches no energy no motivation almost like your extremely Ill, take some energy drinks and get out of bed go distract your mind eat your favorite foods, smoke a cigar, do anything but stay in bed take cold showers drink lots of water 💦 put ice packs on your neck, workout 🏋️♀️ stay strong.

Most detox units are basically psychiatric hospital rooms or standard medical hospital rooms. Generic hospital beds on a medical ward. Nothing special. Just depends on the hospital, how nice or not so nice the room is. Glad you are considering getting some help, try to grow and nurture that motivation.
I personally went through severe Alcoholism around 12 years ago. My wife and I had an arguement back then that I was an Alcoholic and I argued that I wasn't and told her that I would go cold turkey. I'm detoxing at home alone. Any advice? I've drank two shots a day for for about 10 years. Recently I been drinking 10 shots a day because of divorce.so far I've gone two days without anything.
Really depends on your level on chemical dependency. Couple shots a day over a decade or so isn't going to result in severe dependancy for most people. However, 10 shots over a year or even 6 months can have a significant affect on the GABA system which your brain will adapt to after a period of time. This is done to maintain homeostasis and the brain is now expecting alcohol everyday. Abruptly stopping consumption throws off this balance and given the nature of the the GABA system can be medically serious and requires a medicated detox. If you find yourself shaking or having difficulty holding a pen to write or a fork to eat and it hasn't subsided after a day, then you are certainly in withdrawal from long term alcohol dependency. This is where things can get dangerous and is why it is strongly advised to seek a medical detox (Ativan or Librium taper). Again, every individual is different and you may not need a medicated detox. Aditionally, even after the physical withdrawal symptoms subside, your brain still needs to readjust. This can take time (up to a year in extreme cases). You might notice that certain normal activities or hobbies do not seem as pleasurable as they were before. As your brain relearns it will adjust the chemical imbalance to bring itself back to equilibrium. Patience and understanding this part of the process is critical to help prevent a relapse. Hang in there and godspeed.
Funny how everyone says that I need in patient treatment but all the docs just give me some benzo's and send me on my way. The reason is that I am 26, started at 12 however. I hope I live through this and don't get a seizure, I am all alone.
I am currently riding between the 2nd and 3rd day. Its pretty bad. Im having bad body aches, shakiness, chest pain, heart racing, and just plain sweating. Luckily nothing else. Hoping it starts to fade tomorrow. Otherwise i have to call out to work and i need to work to make bills meet.
I would like some insight on the behavioral/mental changes that take place 6 months to a year after quitting. Seems like there would be a "leveling" process where one's maturity and coping skills have to kick in. Drinking dumbs everything down. Are there psychological stages that correspond to the physical body healing? Thanks.

Same here,I was drinking a pint of vodka 5 to 7 days a week for a couple years...when I quite...Nothing.
wish this was my doctor. ive been through all of this, and Dr. Kim has a demeanor that would have mad my situation easier to manage.

How's it going?
I try the same stuff. All of the time 😔. Good luck Derrick 💪🏼

Still in the tender zone. I am 7 days sober.
I feel good. I'm past the sweating, nausea, vomiting and muscle cramping.
I'm eating more carefully and trying to stay busy.
I got very anxious yesterday because i was alone and there was alcohol in the house.(not mine 😒) But I kept moving and breathing.
I was tired but I got to sleep on fresh bedding in a house that hasn't been cleaned properly in forever. No excuses, I just did it. I am so pleased.
I just want to remain aware of what is going on in my body as this is happening so that I can make right choices.
Thank you, Dr. Kim and staff

Great videos. Been through it all. Its a wicked, wicked disease. Detox is awfully uncomfortable. I had hallucinations, visual and audible, tremors, sweats. Worse feeling ever personally. Recovery is hard but it is doable. Noticing the withdrawal is the most important
How long did it take for those hallucinations to wear off?
Totally agree. Well said. Been in hospital a bunch of times, always swore on getting out that’s it. No more. Problem is I get so lonely and hopeless and then my drink problem creeps up on me.

If you don’t mind me asking, how long had you been drinking?
@@Iheartdgd 7 days of HEAVY drinking when i would open my eyes till i passed out and repeat.
Great video and explanation, withdrawal is definitely no walk in the park. Like you said the real work starts after. Appreciate your content 🙌
This channel deserves far more views/subs.

Sad.
Thank you for the video. I drink at least a liter a day of vodka. Going into detox this coming week. Just wanted to know what to expect. Thank you.
How much were you drinking?

@@The_Duck_Is_Angry My thoughts are that the toddler was in a sense you. The regression as your brain shrank took you back to a moment of trauma.

Dr Kim thanks man much love and respect. Keep doing what your doing brother 🙂
I just finished a 7 day bender and I’m now I’ve been violently throwing up all day long…even threw up some blood. Can’t even drink water 😔
I get shakes if I don't get a drink within 24 hours, my heart beats so fast if I wait to long, and it scares the hell out me to go cold turkey
Good advice, thank you

I’ve tried medicine I don’t drink just finally got insurance appt Friday. Ty for speaking up. More then you know. I’m ready to stop but life around my issue doesn’t stop unfortunately. Ty
@Alex Robinson keep up the good work. 2013 I stopped using heroin. Until Covid. Lost my dad and started drinking. I know the steps I’ve done the programs. If I leave my kid her mom will take her. I’m strictly a beer drinking but while typing I’m making excuses. Just don’t want to lose my daughter her mom is an addict. So I will talk to my doctor and see what they suggest. But keep it up all of you. We can do it. Or I’d still be drinking heavy. I’m doing better everyday. Just weak from malnutrition. Still providing just tired of the same thing everyday. Most detox units are basically psychiatric hospital rooms or standard medical hospital rooms. Generic hospital beds on a medical ward. Nothing special. Just depends on the hospital, how nice or not so nice the room is. Glad you are considering getting some help, try to grow and nurture that motivation.

Hope yall take detox serious, ive been to a treatment center 5 times and i never too it serious and i regret it so bad. I have really bad alcoholic hepatitis and that diagnosis was like 6 months ago. Dont know if i can reverse this but hope the people reading this can.
Thanks
After the acute withdrawal symptoms comes the P.A.W.S. Total hell!
Funny how everyone says that I need in patient treatment but all the docs just give me some benzo's and send me on my way. The reason is that I am 26, started at 12 however. I hope I live through this and don't get a seizure, I am all alone.

I would like some insight on the behavioral/mental changes that take place 6 months to a year after quitting. Seems like there would be a "leveling" process where one's maturity and coping skills have to kick in. Drinking dumbs everything down. Are there psychological stages that correspond to the physical body healing? Thanks.
