I grew up next to the direct desendents of Swift, the Dennis family of Wicklow, Ireland.. The last of them, Piers, died in 2016 and the estate was sold in 2019. Three living daughters were educated in England and remained there.
Thanks for posting. I've read "A Modest Proposal" several times over the years, the last this morning. Your video helped me better understand the essay. I've subscribed and look forward to learning more from your channel.
After reading some interesting Thackeray's essays regarding Jonathan Swift, i struggled with grasping Swift's awkward and desperate desire to be recognized as a Poet. He was much greater than just a Poet, he had the gift of humor and he was a great novelist. I really enjoyed his litterature, apart from his poetry of course. As a poet he was drab and dogmatic, but as a Humorist/Satirist he was brilliant 🙏
Dear @homejournalist, With your pardon, I want to read your response. You say "interesting"; that means you are at least intrigued with satire. Go with it, I say. Follow your interest here...because your second sentence shows that you're not there yet. It speaks the antithesis of Swift. Swift's satire is self-critique and institutional critique. That is, we have to be able to see our imperfections--to see the world without blinders. That means, for example, not dismissing, off hand, someone who may have "a beef with Americans." We remove our blinders when we ask: What is the beef and is it warranted? God knows there's room for improvement in all of us. Even among Americans. Satire pokes fun at our prejudices. It is healthy fun. Enjoy.
better than my lecturer this will be huge for my midterms

Yes, he was the preeminent satirist in the Age of Satire
apparently he would not liked to have been called a novelist!
The title of the proposal is great.
Not so much 'great' as modest...
Hmm, interesting analysis. Though it seems the professor has a beef with Americans.
No
I was reading Swift’s text!
